    A solid, rigid wooden plane will always fly better than foam. They don't flex in flight. They don't change trim. It will be the same plane tomorrow. Now all it needs is to be bigger with a nice four stroke engine and it would be a good airplane.

    Gorgous plane! The Fairchild PT-19 was another WW 2 trainer, and was used by the US AIr Force, Britin's Royal Air Force, and the Royal Canadian Air Force for training. It evolved into the PT-23 and PT-26, a number of which were manufactured in Canada, and were built with enclosed dual cockpits. I mean, it gets cold here in Canada during the winter, and they couldn't shut down training for the cold, or move to a warmer climate.

    Kinda cute.. the massive effort.. I spent an average of 80 hrs. per plane building and run the nitro engine full tilt
    and send it!.. Landings were 'go round the tree.. through the goal posts and clear that 4' fence and stick the landing before you hit that building.
    no such thing as flaps or any of that 'telemetry'..

    Nate, Spektrum Smart receiver instructions tell you to do a standard set up on the receiver, then fly, test, and trim the airplane. Then setup AS3X and fly the airplane. And then setup SAFE mode. I’ve wondered why it wouldn’t work just as well to set it all up, like I think you did, and to include having SAFE and AS3X on a switch. Then fly with both turned off to test unassisted flight and basic setup, then turn in AS3X and test it out, and then turn in SAFE. Any thoughts? I do feel like it’s definitely a bad idea to set it all up and then fly it in SAFE mode right from the start, in case you got something setup wrong and it assists you right into the ground.

    Great flying. Pilot Ryan saying this evening on the live show that he was concerned the full-width ailerons would make it snappy and unforgiving. Good to see that's not the case.
    Your intro was longish... but nothing compared to Pilot Robert of the Petrincic Brothers, who can gabble on for 12+ minutes before he advances the throttle. Annnnnd... you should put increasingly more expo into the three rates (high, medium, and low), which if you don't like, you can trim out later. DO IT BEFORE YOU FLY YOUR FIRST FLIGHT! BTW, did you range check?
    Side note: Camera work and image is really great at 1080p at 60 FPS. Maybe the image is a little "warm?" Golden light from end-of-day sun was pretty powerful there in rural Ohio, I'm guessing.

    Great job pushing your comfort zone...with both the balsa plane and fully setting up SAFE & AS3X. 👍 Balsa planes always make me more nervous too. As for setting up the receiver, I've just recently learned how to unlock the Spektrum BNF receives to use in other planes, so I know what you went thru to get this reciver setup. It's not terribly difficult, but it's uncharted territory for most.

  • @johnberrios4255
    @johnberrios4255 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nate, you're just tail heavy not much. I have a few balsa planes and the CG is a little more foward than most foamies. Yes balsa characteristics are a little different and feel different. At least in my experience balsa is a little less forgiving than foamie and you hit the nail on the head you need expo on balsa. You can input expo when you land and as you get more experience with it, you can turn it down a little. Out of the box receivers unlocked ( I use spektrum) you can customize the AS3X and also SAFE. One of my favorite planes is the OMP Bighorn with flaps and I customized a Spektrum 6 channel. I fly it on SAFE but have my gains turned up. So that when I turn the SAFE off I am used to it and now I fly it just nuts. Most of my planes now I buy used and put my own receiver (AR637T or AR8369T). You can customize the AS3X and SAFE gains like you want and as you progress eventually just switch it off. BTW you want too fly a really cool plane then try out the OMP Bighorn. Priced pretty good and out of the box PNP. All you have to do is glue on the rudder. Putting it together and programming the reciever took me about 2hrs and I was flying it the next day. Sorry for loooong post. Awesome job on the flight. BTW leave Abby alone she looks fine...LOL...God Bless you both.

It was a control line and boy did I get dizzy...🤣.... I then bought a PT-19 40. I had that for like 3yrs. I flew the heck out of it and it literally fell apart but man what fun. Now Hanger 9 has this. Good job in flying it. Now I'm going to relive some memories and purchase this one through you're link...Thanks for the memories...😄

  • @boodaghost6896
    @boodaghost6896 ปีที่แล้ว

    That thing is cheatery (LOL). I've built several balsa ARFs and nothing I've built appears as easy to put together as that plane. I perused the manual. Any balsa ARF I've built is a lengthy process. Eflite Pawnee, Taylorcraft, J3 Cub, Hangar 9 Miss America P51 and several others took many hours to build. They were anything but, almost ready to fly. I guess that HorizonHobby feels that the build process takes away from flying and crashing their models. To me, the build was a huge part of the hobby. All of the effort you put into building made makes you way more careful once you finally get it into the air. Also, I didn't have the luxury of all of the SAFE stuff. If things went bad, well that's it. Well done on your first flight of that one.

    I just recently got my first airplane, the small P51D. However it really does seem that there are simply no good places to fly. Can't fly at parks because people are ignorant fools that somehow think I am spying on them. Can't go to the local RC airfield to fly because everyone there is just a bunch of snobs that look down their noses at beginners as if we are some sort of 3 headed animal or something. These are definitely things you all should be including in your videos. Yea flying RC Airplanes is alot of fun I am sure, but if you can't fly your airplane anywhere then that's an important detail that kinda destroys the entire experience.

      Robert just go out and enjoy flying you're planes at you're local RC field. Every club has those people. I ignore them and just go and have a nice time. I have the same issues at my field. Oh you're flying a foamie...oh all you're doing is circles....oh you're flying electric..oh you're flying on SAFE....I eventually told those people "politely". I work all week very hard. I come out here to get away from the stress and drama of the week. The last thing I need is armchair pilots on what I'm doing wrong. If you don't have any good advice or just want too talk then please leave me alone. Thank you very much and have a nice day. Word will get around quickly and well for me the armchair pilots left me alone and also do try to find the good pilots they are out there at the field but what I have learned is they are like you and I and they want to be left alone but quietly observe and approach them with genuine humility. Those are the ones that have a wealth of info and experience and they are willing to help you. Other than that enjoy yourself. 😉

      @@johnberrios4255 that's the thing. They refused to even talk to me to answer questions that I had. When I walked up and told them that I am a beginner and was interested in joining they literally scoffed at me and turned around and walked away. There is absolutely nothing enjoyable about exposing oneself to that kind of elitist BS. No, this hobby has WAY to many people in it that literally believe they are better than others simply because they have a good space to fly their planes. I believe a hobby that's not filled with elitist asshats is a better choice. But at least I found that out before spending money on the AeroScout like I was planning.

      John,
      Your experience sounds terrible! After being ignored by the people at your local club, I can see why you don’t want to be put in such an upsetting situation. I would feel the same way.
      Please don’t give up on the hobby so quickly. There are lot of nice people who fly who are not childish, or struggle with poor social skills. Perhaps you could contact the head of the club, share your experience and be connected with a person who would be a good ambassador to the sport and enjoy teaching you the basics. Most clubs have a few foamie high wing training planes available that you can learn on and volunteer instructors that can override the controls if you get into trouble.
      If do persist, you would be doing the club a big favor, as it will probably die if curios beginners are put off. Many there is another club that you could try near by?
      PS- I fly many different planes, but found that the small hand launch P-51 to be really, really tricky to get in the air and fly. They look cool, but are not relaxing to learn on, as they need to go fast to not fall out of the sky. Please don’t give up yet! Try something like a regular size E Flight Timber that can fly very slowly, is easy to fly on SAFE, do fine in a small field, land slowly, but can also do a lot of acrobatics when you are ready. This way, you don’t need a plan that you will quickly tire of as you improve.

      @@davidking8255 I actually found my first flight at a local park with my P51 to be pretty easy! At least until people accused me of using it to spy on kids even though it doesn't have a camera or anything which is just baffling. That first flight lasted for about 5 minutes until that happened and I thought it was alot of fun. But people have to be stupid about absolutely everything and anything they don't immediately understand. And the person I talked to at the airfield when I first got there actually was the person that ran everything so I have no faith that anything will change there and I have absolutely no desire to change it because in the end all I want to do is fly a tiny little foam plane in peace. I shouldn't need to go to websites and watch videos to get certifications and pay for registration numbers or pay over $300 membership just to fly a tiny little trainer a few times just to see if I actually want to put my limited money into the hobby. I'm a disabled 18 year veteran living on my disability. Asking for all that money before I even know if it's worth it in any way is absurd. And yes they actually did have trainers there that they dismissively waved towards as if even acknowledging their existence was somehow insulting to them. Oh and they required a $50 fee to let me fly one as if it were an honor to fly theirs but mine wasn't worthy.
      No, if there are even two or three people that I have to deal with any time that I want to fly then there is absolutely no way that I want anything to do with it. I dealt with enough unnecessary BS during my service in the USMC and I have absolutely no desire to have it in my life when it's not needed. I think I will look for something with alot less snobbery infecting it. Although in retrospect I should have known exactly how things were going to go when I pulled into the parking lot and all the cars cost more than my home while I was riding a 300cc motorcycle. The wealthy in Florida are almost as snobby as those in Hollywood.

      @@davidking8255 David I'm fine now but yea our club is dying little by little. Which is a shame because it is a beautiful field almost quite literally in the shadow of a mountain (House Moutain RC) here in Knoxville Tn. We do have some really nice folks but it's the few that make it a bad experience at times. Unfortunately every field has these people and I have been to quite a few. I have volunteered and let it be known that I am willing to train beginners. I have two Apprentice STS 1.5 that were donated by a local hobby shop for this reason and even got them to offer 15% off for beginners that I bring in. Which I have had a few and its gone over well overall with my club...albeit at the grumbling of the few old farts. This hobby needs new specifically younger people. Good news is since I have started this more of the younger quieter ones in the club have started doing the same and making thier voices heard also and we have even started to throw our hats in the ring for club office positions. Yes Robert a real good plane to grow with is the Turbo Timber Evolution. It is VERY VERY forgiving and as you grow and learn it will grow with you. I have one and it comes to the field with me every time.
