YES purple mangosteen is really delicious!
    Fun facts:
    1. You could know how much wedges indide the fruit without opening it. Just look at the bottom of the fruit and you'll see a flower like pattern there. The "petals" shows how many wedges inside the fruit. Take a look at 7:53
    2. Open the mangosteen with bare hands by putting the fruit in between the bottom palm of your hands and squeeze/crush it. It's a little bit messy but will get the job done
    3. The rind of this fruit is insanely famous in Indonesia as a medicine and become a meme here because of the overly done advertising 😂

I've tried mangosteen three times. All of them were rock hard and had to be smashed open, and most of them were rotten on the inside. The ones that were not had no flavour to them at all. That's what it's like eating exotic fruits in Sweden 😆
I really hope i could taste a good specimen one of these days, because everyone seems to love them.

Always stay away from mangosteens that are hard or have a brown stem. I think your best bet would obviously be to go to somewhere warmer preferably in Southeast Asia where they are very abundant and cheap. I personally believe they are well worth the expense of a plane ticket.

The fruit market in Sweden is very boring. Just the standard stuff. Understandable, but sad.

Yeah I think it's because it has to travel so far, so that's a lot of fuel and wage(s). And unlike many other fruits it won't keep well, so you probably cant' truck over huge loads of it because there's not enough demand.

@@MsHojat I think that demand and logistics is probably a problem with a lot of fruits. Frankly we just seems rather unaware of a lot of tasty and interesting fruits outside of staples like apples, citrus, banana etc. and even then when it comes to different cultivars of citrus or banana..

I regularly have Mangosteen tea (my wife makes for me). Made from whole dried Mangosteens, she uses 1/4 of a fruit, put into a teapot, pour over boiling water, let it steep for a couple of minutes and drink. You can re-do 3 or 4 times, though it will obviously get weaker and weaker. The tea is a dark reddish / brown, a little sweet and slightly sharp / acidic. It is supposed to be full of antioxidants and very good for you. I enjoy it right form the very first time I tried it.

If the lemon juice made it turn pink the purple chemical in the rind might be a PH indicator like the one you find in purple cabbages and purple sweet potatoes!

Lemon juice can also turn some black teas reddish! It's neat. Very probably due to the acidity.

Dried and powdered mangosteen (whole fruit or just the skin/rind) is excellent for histamine reactions. You can mix it in juice or water but it really needs to be taken with food at the same time to prevent tummy cramps and diarrhea. A tiny amount - like 1/8 teaspoon can stop the itching from things like bug bites also immediately. Definitely discuss with you doctor before using. I buy the Terrasoul brand from Amazon...

You can't. They don't grow anywhere else other than in Asia, and even then, in only some parts of Asia. They also cannot be propagated other than from seed. They can't grow in cold areas. But I heard some people in the US where able to barely grow them in the hottest part of the US.

@@nochannel1000 Tell that to my two Mangosteen trees grown from Seed. They are about 40cm tall already and are Polyembryonic ones. Never say never. I have a heated Wintergarden with high power high lumen grow lights, humidifier, dehumidifer, hygrometer, etc etc, everything automated ;-). I have a small Jungle here, and even harvested my own grown Cherimoyas, Carambolas and this year i hope to get the first fruits on my Coffea Arabica Nana aka Dwarf Coffee Plants.

Fun fact about acidity and purple: You can dilute, for example, red cabbage juice and it can be used as a rudimentary pH tester. NileRed does a quick demonstration of this. The mangosteen shell infusion may have anthocyanins in it, like the cabbage? If that's the case it makes sense.

I'm just happy you are here. If you lived in my village, people would ask what is that guy doing? Oh he is a doctor do not be alarmed.
Then it would be if he is a doctor why doesn't he know
anything? I would tell them that he is a doctor anyway. He might not know our names. He might not be a plant doctor. But he is a doctor and deserves respect. My message to you. We are always respecting knowledge. When it comes to plants , he doesn't know about it very much. I think he's just fine. He's a doctor.

If the seeds taste like almond, there's probably a little bit of cyanide in them, but not enough to hurt you.

    • @woomy2343
      @woomy2343 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Depends on if it's sweet or bitter almond. Sweet almonds don't have cyanide in them

The “bitter old stick” was the cyanide flavor.
