MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
Video of icebox:

FIRST TIME COMMENTER; I found you a week ago...and have been watching all videos. Just WOW! I soak up every single thing like a sponge..you have an amazing amount of gifts and Frankie boy... I could eat him with a spoon..what a living doll. Lost my farm in 03..cancer and divorce and disability..at 60 now, awaiting the day to get there again!! You wax eloquent in speech and philosophy....what an amazing service you gift us with... thank you Mr. Swampboss!! kiss the "Frankster" from Phyllis in MA.
Thank you for your kind words Phyllis. Happy to hear you enjoy my videos :-)
+thebossoftheswamp. haha...you made me feel like I got an autograph from a rockstar..how neat is that? Plow on..great work!
I've done it like this and it works! Best if they can't see you at all so they don't get all nervous. That shower curtain works well. I used an old sheet and worked just as well.
Agreed. Never had one spray yet.
Watch my videos. Have some good ways of getting rid of skunks in these traps. I have one of the fattest raccoons you probably ever seen too
Skunks are sweet animals raised a baby one once, and camping with my children in Tennessee we would feed them scraps, they wondered into our camp every evening my dog never seemed to mind and the children loved watching them as much as i did. part of sharing their space is being as kind to them as they are with us, it's share and share alike. we were invading their home tho not the other way around. never been sprayed or had my pets sprayed. when we go camping i usually take along some bird seed and find a place to put it we end up watching more birds and wild life that way. kind of like a thank you gift for the use of the space seems to make everyone happy :)
I've been doing that for years
@@charlesroberts3910 yes i have done the same. i love most critters minus snakes and spiders. lol
Great tips, especially the shower curtain. That has so many uses
Man, I simply LOVE your videos. You're such a friendly face to see and your videos are always calming and informing. Keep it up !
Thank you for your kind words :-)
boy this brings on memories! my first day of H S the dog was sprayed and I was the only volunteer to go out and treat her. I showered forever but still stunk. what a way to start a new school!
Shower, then wash yourself with (BIG CAN of) tomato juice. Soak tell it is just about dry, then shower again. The more you wipe yourself down with the tomato juice the better. So put the stopper in the tub. If your wife will let you clean up inside. :-) This works good to clean a dog up too.
I'm grinning ear to ear. Used the same technique but I have a Havahart live trap and relocated nearly a dozen skunks under the "don't ask don't tell rule in NJ". I used extra crispy bacon and it works like a charm plus I get to eat a few slices before I set the trap. Hardest part is letting all the cats, opossums and raccoon I will sometimes catch and checking it through the night. Great video made my night, thanks for posting!
I always thought if you used a trap that was low enough that they couldn't raise their tail they wouldn't spray.... that being said all the skunks I have caught were unintended as I was after something else .. and they sprayed.. good info as always
I've never had one spray using this method.
Always fun playing with the skunks Boss. And you did not even have to break out the baking soda, peroxide and dish soap.
I made a live trap out of plywood, a rat trap and a nail.. Works great. As always boss, Cheers!!!
I had a few of those in the past too. Thanks for jogging the memory loose :-)
When I lived in Arizona, my ex husband and I had problems with the next door neighbor's feeding a lot of stray cats. We had to put our dog down and so all of a sudden, we have cats that were spraying the house and everything. What a stench. We used that same type of trap and started taking the cats to the spca. Those traps really are great.
I had the same problem here. Damn cats pissing all over my porch and my firewood :-/
Yuk! Almost as bad as skunk.
yep, did it exactly the same except...at about a foot away I tossed the plastic...scared the skunk & got hit close range in the face, neck & chest. lesson here: don't loose your nerve & toss the plastic! slow & steady wins the race. wish i'd seen this sooner.
Excellent video, Thank You!
Glad you liked it!
@@thebossoftheswamp yes very helpful!! but I don't need anything in my shed at the moment, I was told They would leave in about 10 weeks if its a litter she is looking after.
Profesional trapping for free, now that's just good Backwoods Logic, yes sir.
Thank you JC as always great information and we'll given. God Bless
Thanks for the video. I reuse my old shower curtain liners too!
Great tip with the shower curtain. Thanks.
Good video like the plastic over the trap thanks will use that next time
JC I purchased one of the pvc pipe traps to try out. Works like a charm. The skunk is enclosed in the pipe when caught and can't get his tail up to spray. You just grab the handle and off you go. If you've never used one check them out. I have always used the live traps before, and like you, have never been sprayed. However, I always figured it was like playing with dynamite. It only takes one time for it to go off. Lol
I've never used the PVC ones but heard good stuff about them.
I always have trouble with raccoons digging up my flowers...so I use the same trap you do.....but here your allowed to relocate the animal....thumbs up..:-)
Worked great!
Used shower curtain.
Im glad I didnt get sprayed.
Released it and off it went.🤙
You are so knowledgeable, good for you! Learning is a great process of knowing! Had a possum once coming up from the basement into the restroom. I guess once they get comfortable they feel at home! Hopefully you sell your homestead soon if you haven't yet. Take care!
Just a couple of comments.
1. A plastic shower curtain works, but a cloth cover is quieter and conforms more easily to the shape of the trap.
2. No need rto fumble for that handle. Pick the trap up by both ends. That's more stable and faster.
3. Place the trap on a piece of wood or other solid base. That prevents the animal fro digging up a mess.
Thanks for all the good backwoods logic!
I always had German Shepherd's and one of my K9 whiskey was a good old boy . But no more dogs for me , it hurts to much when you loose them . You be cool and keep us entertain and by the way I like the video on the generators . I have a Champion log splitter that's done me right .
Losing them is a killer for sure :-(
I have the same trap and I like it also. Thanks Boss, glad to see you back !
Great tip on the shower curtain Boss, One of those why the heck didn't I think of that before things.
Good stuff Boss, Glad to see ya. Be safe out there!
Thanks buddy :-)
An old wet blanket works good too. I like to have a piece of plywood cut to fit the bottom of the trap so the animal doesn't have to walk on the wire. A couple shovels of dirt on the bottom makes it more inviting also.
There is a mom and a few baby skunks living in my backyard . So far Abigail has been safe but its coming she keeps barking at them. I will be having surgery soon and I am looking forward to recovering with you and Frankie.
Living near the Brasher State Forest we get all sorts of critters. Glad to know I have wild life removal expert close by. Great video.
Hey I just wanted to say some of my channel traffic is now coming from JC's videos! (the suggested videos after his plays). Yay!
Happy to hear that :-)
Excellent tip. Thank you for sharing. I will be sharing this. The key is not to let the dog check the trap first! Don't ask me how I know....
Agreed :-)
I have caught a number of skunks and other critters. One challenge is the relocating of skunks becuase they tend to come back to the same areas they have made a den if the area is not closed off. Where do you release them? And do you then use hardware cloth or something to close off the area that you were using for their den?
We use to trap shanks in Canada. Trap is low and skunk cannot lift his tail. We use to offer swimming lessons to the skunks. Moth balls help keep them out. Did have one spray under cabin, we got in a few extra hours of fishing that day. A 55 gal bucket with a ramp....eggs and oil for bait...works great unless skunk discharges under water....brings tears to your eyes
Roger that on the swimming lessons :-)
I always used Have a Heart traps, even for skunks... relocated, and NEVER sprayed.... I did get the look from the skunk when they scurried out of the trap ~
Great advice bud. Many thanks to you as always.
Another good one. I miss seeing Frankie in your videos lately, I hope he is OK.
Great video and thank you for the advice. One thing, I highly recommend you mount a junction box on that wall and put the outlets inside! That looks scary!! Other than that thank you
Greats video thanks for sharing
Great video with tips, keep on keeping on, Best of luck always and thanks for sharing your videos.
Although I'm a city-dweller, I have MANY examples of live trapping. I must say that your advice presented here is exactly correct! In my municipality, it was also 'unlawful' for me to trap an animal. I paid dearly to have a 'professional' do this for me. This dufus left the raccoon out in the blazing hot July sun for an entire day (while I was at work) with no water and no cover from the hot sun! That will be that LAST time I ever let someone else perform such shoddy (yet expensive for me!) work.
Also, your plastic idea works well even for squirrels. I found that squirrels and raccoons go ballistic when you approach the trap without a cover or shield preventing them from seeing you! The adult raccoon even reached through the cage to try and 'get' me. I used live traps, but do not recall the brand.
Extremely excellent advice for all to heed!!
Dufus's like that really tick me off. Sometimes it's best to run on the don't ask - don't tell method and do it yourself. All the best to you.
Don't have a skunk problem but I do have a possum problem. Thanks for the info Boss Man .
From the great state of Louisiana 🇺🇸
Good luck with the possums.
Well at least you didn't get skunked JC! Good Video!
Years ago my coworker and her husband went out of town for the weekend. Her neighbor babysat her dogs. Unfortunately the dogs caught a skunk in their back yard and brought it in the house through the doggie door. It got loose inside. There was an extensive amount of damage done by the time the neighbor came over in the morning. The dogs had eventually killed it. The smell and damage was just as bad as you can imagine. Their insurance covered new carpet, paint and everything else. I never forgot this and have never installed a doggie door in my own house.
That's pretty crazy. :-o
Grand slam, man!! Been out trout fishing yet, I bet its hard with the ponds more than likely still frozen up there.
Not yet. Ice is just leaving now.
Im hitting some Finger Lakes streams tomorrow. Going to be nice to get out.
👍Good to know. Hope I never have a skunk visitor/ guest. 🤔As a kid I remember we took a family vacation road trip and some where along the way a skunk sprayed the car!! It was awful. At some point my parents found a grocery store and purchased several large cans of tomato juice to pour over the front of the car before going to a car wash.
Boss, I hope i never ever have to follow your advice on this! But prepared if i have to. Great Video ! Heading up to the Granite State, hopefully Ice is out and snow is gone!
Heading there soon myself.
Thank you.
good job again thanx for sharing ehhh
This mix works very well if you are skunked: 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide (available at any pharmacy)
1/4 cup baking soda., 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap. I tried it once I catch a skunk in my trap instead of a squirel LOL it neutralizes that terrible smell very fast.
Excellent video! I used your method with the tarp and walked to it.
Skunk was very quiet, just looking back at me. Some tail raising but no
spray. An easy way for me was to take a 3/4x1x10 foot piece of lumber,
drive a nail into the side near the end, just enough to hold it. Used
the wood/nail to roll the cage over onto its top. Slowly so as not to
upset the skunk. The top lever (now on the ground side) should have
fallen open to permit the door to open, using the wood/nail to push the
swing-down lever back at the bottom (was the top). Easy way is to hold
the lever back and use a 2nd piece of wood to push the door back into
the cage until the door is about 1/2 way open and wedge it to stay open.
Then slip around to the back (where the skunk has moved by now) and
poke and talk at him until he walks out, looks back at you like you're
an moron, then ambles away. Just be careful not to trip the door and
let it close again. State law forbids transporting most wild animals
claiming it could spreads disease, which means paying someone $100 or
destroy it yourself (Playing Joe Biden speeches works well although may
be considered cruel by some.)
GREAT VIDEO, THANKS
Stinky idea told without any odour at all . Thanks Brian 76
Just in time. We have a couple visting us here already in Vt and there's still snow on the ground. Skunks and dogs are not a good combination. Thanks for your video and take care, Al
Always good stuff !! Thanks for the info .
Hey! I couldn't find the trap you used with the links provided.
Nicely done Boss, I always use cat food to bait my trap, I have a cat, so it's always handy, and it seems to work. Thanks for sharing Boss.
Cat food works great for everything :-)
Good Vid J. C.! The state laws restricting catch and release of wild animals are pretty silly. Enjoyed your sharing of your knowledge. I am sure it will be very helpful to many! .
Lots of stupid laws here buddy. We have to set 15' away from a beaver lodge but there's no distance requirement off the pavement where people walk their dogs. Who thinks up this stuff anyway?
LOL You are absolutely right Boss. The problem with Government is that is that it has to keep creating useless regulations, red tape and taxes in order to propagate itself. That is why th EPA, IRS and OSHA are the menace that they are. LOL
Hi Boss,
Thank you for the vlog and it was awesome! Again we learned some good advice from you. I hope you and Frankie have a Good day, be safe
Karey From Missouri
Good day to you too Karey :-)
Hey Boss as always nice thoughtful video. I don't like to use meat or cat food, only peanut butter for skunks, it avoids catching the neighborhood cats. I also use home made wood box traps just for skunks. I drill a one inch hole in each side to be sure there's a critter in it but because they can't see in the dark box they won't spray. You can pick up the whole trap put it in the truck, take him somewhere and just open the box, he'll walk out on his own.
Boxes work well for sure but cages do too :-)
Have you ever used the plastic spray proof live traps? I have had real good luck with them and most of the time the skunk will be asleep and you almost have to dump them out before you send them to Valhalla. I have had best luck using vanilla wafers for bait but can't say it is the best choice. Good video as I am always interested in another and maybe better way.
Never tried them but been really liking these Safeguard cages.
great trap and super good advice
I have several skunk traps around town now and have caught two already. I have made some traps out of 6" plastic pipe and they are working well. No chance of getting sprayed with them. Later Boss and all the best.
Pipe traps work great for them.
So how did you fix the hole under your house? Did you use chicken wire to prevent the skunk and or other critters from moving back in under the house?
No I just replaced the dirt after the skins were gone.
you just can't beat good back woods logic
I like the copyright disclaimer ... Good for you .. Keep up the great work . See you up in NH and lets have a beer or two .. lol cheers
A very good method for trapping those pesky skunks without the nasty smell.
I'm sorry if this is a repeated question. What camera and or mic do you use?
J , a quick story , when i ran a trap line for rats as a kid my dad told me just water sets no above ground dry holes , ok ok , so i found a really nice well used above water hole in a bank while out one day checking my traps ,wow maybe a mink sooo i set one of my Vickter leg hold rat traps and no mink , a skunk well i told my dad and after the I told you so talking to he went out with me and what he did was take two long sticks with a tarp hung on the ends of the sticks and slowly moved step by step then slowly placed the tarp over the skunk in the leg trap and was able to press the spring down and release the skunk ,he said the skunk wouldn't spray what he couldn't see , it was great I'll always remember that one ,
Hey Boss.. another great video.. What material did you use to skirt in your house nd cabins..looks like concrete fiber board. I'm not sure if you can secure a mortgage in Nova Scotia Canada unless you have a solid foundation.. Something I will look into before I start my project. Thanx again take care
That's exactly what I used. Have fun with your project.
Good information JC. My question is Where do you relase Mr. Skunk so that he doesn't just return to his home? Squirrels can be hard to move. They can travel a long way to get back. Just wondering. . . .
Across the river. They are not swimmers.
thebossoftheswamp 👍 Thanks!
I have a trap on loan to catch a groundhog. I do not leave it open at night for fear of catching Mr. Stinky. Question: how do you open the trap? Mine seems only to be opened from front and could be risky.
I've never had issues opening the trap but I keep the plastic in front of me to shield me just in case.
@@thebossoftheswamp Thanks for the reply, so fast. I think my trap, although it looks a lot like others, is a very old version. To load it or rather arm it, you must lift the lock, push in and lift on front. I do not want to do that with an animal in there. Will take a longer look at the back as that also opens.
It was a nasty video. But someone had to do it, lol. No disrespect intended. An excellent video. I have never had skunk problems. I hope I never do. But I know how to get rid of them. Thanks to you and your video. As always an excellent amazing video. Thanks for sharing. I am happy that you're back making videos my friend. May God bless you always. Be safe out there.
Something you might want to try for bait is some tuna. My wife had some tuna salad in the fridge so I swiped some of it to use for bait and buddy I'll tell you what. They love that stuff. Although i can't really blame them. My wife does make a pretty mean tuna salad sandwich. lol
Tuna and/or cat food works great for just about anything.
Great video and I appreciate the links and all, but unless I’m missing something , that release part involves getting up close and personal to the critter inside, right ?
Yes but I've never had any issues with releasing an animal.
Hello. Thank you for this video. What can I do if we trap a skunk in our crawlspace? We are afraid that if it sprays, then it will most definitely stink up our home. I heard you say you've never had a skunk spray in a cage. Maybe we will just get lucky? I hope so! :) thank you.
Oh, and we believe it could be trapped in our crawlspace
Don't trap it in your crawlspace, lure him away from the house by setting the trap away from the house.
@@thebossoftheswamp that's what I was telling my husband. I was concerned that he may of filled the hole the skunk got in at... and if so, it could be stuck in there :( it appears it may be nesting in a pile of insulation. We love animals so we wouldn't harm it.
Hey JC, hope all is well. I've never caught a skunk in my traps but that looks like the easy part...how do you get him out?? baw ha ha ha
That's the only step missing here!
I've had to do that a few times...but once...a great horned owl nailed one next to the house and it sprayed the house. I woke in the middle of the night because the smell was so strong..I thought the house was on fire. smelled like a combination electrical fire and a burning tire..took about four weeks for the smell to disappear inside the house...not fun.
great video
Nice video Boss!
LOL I hate catching skunks in my traps , BUT, for some reason I end up trapping a bunch of coyotes afterwards ! lol
Good video buddy & good advice as always. BTW JC , Got my package & we did a taste test on most of the items I purchased & I think your gonna get a few new customers very shortly ! ;)
God bless
Thank you buddy. I appreciate your business :-)
Hi Boss and Frankie. Have you got any ideas on how to stop Rats getting in to my garden please? I back on to a woods and am concerned about using poison due to the dogs . Great to see you .Thanks . xx
Wish I had a solution for that but avoiding poisons is definitely the right choice.
Amazon link you have doesn't go to any specific thing? Do you get discount if one buys from your link? If so, reset your link. Thanks for your time and knowledge, appreciate it much!!
One solution is to keep a tarp on a pole next to the cage trap. When you make a catch drape the pole with the tarp over the cage slowly. To asphyxiate the animal, you connect a garden hose to the exhaust pipe of your vehicle and run the vehicle about 20 minutes under the tarp and that should do it.
disgusting
Great idea!! I never thought of that. Now if you have a dog that gets sprayed what do you do to get the stink off him?
Appears like you have all the bugs worked out of the new videoing process. Everything looked and sounded good. Really look forward to your upcoming projects at the cabins. Hard to believe someone, maybe a young family or retired couple hasn't snapped up the Homestead yet. But maybe they have.
I have a potential buyer coming back for a second look :-)
depends on how big your dog is on how much to mix up (I have a 110 lbs. Anatolian with long fur) = for her I mix a bottle of hydrogen peroxide with 1/2 cup of baking soda and 2 Tbsp. of Dawn dish soap... do not hose dog off.... take a rag and soak the mixture and start wetting your dog down with this until dog fur is completely soaked. let the mixture stay on for at least 10 minutes - longer is better. Then hose off with plenty of water rubbing with your hand to make sure all the soap is off the fur and skin. towel dry off.... The sooner you do this after first getting sprayed by the skunk - the better.....
If you accidently get sprayed by a skunk or it does spray your house, what do you use to get rid of the smell??? Thanks.
Good vid boss man . I use wet cat food and it works like a charm too.
Catfood works on everything. Best crawfish bait I know of.
Amen Boss!
I watched many how to release a skunk from a trap. I have never operated a trap. My neighbors kid trapped a skunk and now it’s on my property. I don’t know how the mechanism works to release the door of the trap. If you could show how to release the door that would be great. Thank you 😊
I would but my traps are in NY.
So I love racoons. There are only a few left in my area and I try to help them out with water and cat food in the hotter summer months. However, a skunk started showing up about 2 weeks ago, and last night his buddy was with him/her. So now this is a family. How do I trap the skunks and not the smaller racoons? I would like to relocate the skunks - thanks for any help you can give.
Great video. How would one go about extracting a skunk from their ventilation system in a town house?
It'll go outside eventually and trap it there.
How do you release them without getting skunked?
You open the door snd hold it open. Stand still. They won’t see or notice you. If your using these traps to catch coins your a fool. Coins kill these traps. Always have your live trap half covered wit tar paper. Top and one side. Be very slow when handling them.
I like the idea of putting a scrap of plywood on top of the trap, God knows when you treat critters humanely.
No skunks here but I use my share of skunk essence :) Found it very interesting Boss, very informative...
Skunk essence is the go to scent on the winter line :-)
Hello Sir, I will be up in Malone next week with my wife and two daughters. I was wondering ( I think Malone is near your homestead) if you know of any nice hiking trails in the area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW Love your channel!!
I don't know the Malone area very well because all I ever do is just drive through it but Mt Azure is an awesome hike. It's short and steep but the views are priceless.
Thanks J.C.I have a trap like yours, and like it, but the problem I have with it, is that the spring is to strong to open the trap easy when you have something that wants to bite you. Or spray you. When I was a teenager I caught 100's of rabbits using a trap I made of 1x6 lumber. For skunks I would use 1x8, or 1x10's. Cut 4 pieces of 1 by 24" long, or however long you want, one piece just the size you need to cap or plug one end. And one piece 1" longer than the open end is tall. Call this piece "A".You need to use a couple of pieces of angle iron, or something, to capture "A", so it can slide up and down with ease, on the open end of the trap. But will be captured when it is closed, and can not be pushed open.On the top, about 4"-5" back from the open end, you need to mount a board, or limb, or a round rod, call this "B", in the center from side to side. This rod should be at least as tall as the sliding door.On the closed end, about 6" from the end, in the center side to side, you need to drill a 1/2"-3/4" hole. This is where the trigger will be set. It needs to be far enough that the animal can not reach the bait before it trips the trigger, and springs the trap, but deep enough that the animal is all the way in before it is tripped. The trigger should be long enough to touch the bottom in the trap, and stick up enough to tie a string or wire to the top. It should not be any longer than it has to be.The trigger is nothing but a stick that has a 90 degree notch cut in to it, so that when you stick it through the hole you drilled in the top, and then slid towards the open end, it catches on the underside of the top board of the trap. It MUST be slid to the front to be set ! This way when the animal touches the trigger he pushes it so it will spring. It also should be about 1" off the floor when set.The trigger must be short enough that it comes all the way out of the trap when sprung. And to complete the trap, you need an arm to connect the door, and the trigger. Call this "C". This arm will sit on top of "B", and be long enough so the strings connected to the door and trigger will be straight up and down, when the trap is set."C" should be angled down to the trigger when it is sat on top of "B", and hold the door open high enough to not touch the animal as it enters. Everything should be set up so the trigger will come all the way out of the trap when the door drops. *****The door should be many times heavier***** than "C" and the trigger, so it can "spring" everything when the trigger is tripped. This trap should be easy to trip. So do not make the notch in the trigger to deep. You can then take the trap to where ever you want to let the animal go. Just grab the trigger and lift the door out to free the animal. Then walk away, or RUN, for a while and let the animal go at it's own speed. After all this typing I hope this helps someone.
I used a suppressed Ruger .22 with subsonic rounds to get rid of my skunk issues.
Great info JC. When it comes to skunks I generally drown the stinkers!
JC, great video as always, but you never said how you dispatch the skunk? and your not able to relocate it so how do you dispatch it? Ive used the water method before, works great and it dont spray. Whats your method?
Water as well.
I didn't see a link to the trap you used. I checked the links you posted but they didn't contain the trap either. Help! I have a skunk problem!
This is the trap I use but many other brands will work well for skunks. amzn.to/3twuPQc
