      the confusion, or rather the joke, comes from when they announced the teams and the players, dogura made a tweet saying that team b wouldn't lose. then he immediately noticed his mistake, deleted the previous tweet and tweeted again: "team b?? who said anything about team b, we're team c baby!" that's how their team name came about

    We're normally used to Botan being the cool, unflappable gaming lion, so it really hurts hearing her breakdown in such a raw manner. Between that and Korone tearfully empathizing with Botan's feelings of frustration, you can see how fighting game tournament pressure is really scary.
    Thankfully, this ended in a heartwarming finale after all those exciting matches filled with adrenaline, cheers and frustrations.

      To be fair: this was a really healthy crying. Part of it was obviously frustration, but a lot of it was just releasing all the emotions repressed while she was focusing on the match.
      The first chance she could relax it all just came out through her tearducts.

      It's crazy... I have NEVER seen botan show such raw emotion. To all the people that are seeing this on the outside, if you have never lost in a fighting game, especially in a tournament, it is very challenging to let go.
      Botan is way better than me at a fighting game that I wish to get good at if I had time to put in. Botan should be proud of that and continue to play. Korone too. You can't be the best if you don't learn from your loses.

    Some analysis in simple terms for people who don’t play fighting games:
    Botan’s match is very interesting because there are several patterns of play on both sides that point to specific pieces of preparation and adaptation by the competitors.
    Botan is playing as Marisa, a character that favors straightforward aggression. Marisa lacks defensive tools and has slightly below-average speed, but compensates with forward-moving attacks with high range, knock-back and damage.
    Bodoka is playing as Lily, a character that favors tactical maneuvering. Lily is an unusual character, she lacks a lot of standard tools that are generally considered valuable in Street Fighter 6 and has difficulty finding opportunities for big damage, but she can overwhelm opponents by attacking at surprising ranges and timings.
    1:02 - As the match opens, we can immediately see what Botan’s game plan is: use Marisa’s forward-moving attacks to force Bodoka into the corner, then shower him with offensive pressure. However, we can also see Bodoka’s game plan: alternate between slow defensive and fast offensive play. Bodoka blocks and pokes at Botan from afar with Lily’s far-reaching Heavy normals, then dives in with Condor Spire to pressure her with Light attacks. These are both very standard, very solid strategies for their respective characters.
    1:10 - Here we see the first signs of the primary weakness in Botan’s gameplan: she is capable of driving Bodoka into the corner, but she appears to be uncomfortable with crossing from midrange to the close-range she needs to be at to connect with the Light attacks she’s most comfortable using. The simple act of walking up to an opponent is a deceptively intense challenge of a player’s game knowledge, reaction speed and situational awareness. Throughout the match, when she is at the mid-range, Botan will either press Light attack, use a forward-moving attack or jump at Bodoka. These methods have the potential to work, but only situationally, and they are generally not a good fit against Bodoka when he rotates to his slow, defensive position.
    1:44 - Another weakness in Botan’s game plan is that she’s spending a lot of her Drive Meter to try and cover distance very quickly. As a result, she drives herself into Burnout, which weakens her defensively and gives Bodoka a big opportunity to switch to offense.
    1:52 - Botan demonstrates good situational awareness and corner defense here. Since she is in Burnout, she is especially vulnerable to getting hit with a Drive Impact, as she has very few options to counter it and she will be stunned if she is hit by it, even if she blocks it. She jumps and gets hit out of the air, but this is still theoretically a good choice because it would have dodged a Drive Impact. As she gets off the ground, Bodoka activates Drive Impact, but Botan immediately interrupts it with a throw, one of the only options that would work in that scenario - it would also counter an attempt by Bodoka to throw her. Botan plays aggressively from there with jumping attacks, which causes Bodoka to switch back to his defensive mode even though Botan is still in Burnout. Hence, Botan successfully fights her way out of a bad spot.
    2:06 - This is an excellent defensive play by Botan. Bodoka has two Windclad stocks, meaning that his next two Condor Spires are stronger and will always allow him to act first if they are blocked. Bodoka uses Condor Spire and then uses Light attacks, then Condor Spires again and uses a Command Grab, which cannot be blocked. This is a bread-and-butter Lily setup that conditions opponents to block and then takes immediate advantage of that conditioning. However, Botan does not fall for this, she blocks the Condor Spires and the Light attacks but jumps to escape the Command Grab. This is indicative of good intuition and situational awareness.
    2:30 - Here we can see an attempted adaptation by Botan. She Drives Rushes in to the midrange, then immediately attempts a Drive Parry. This appears to be an attempt to defend against Lily’s far-reaching pokes, and it could work if Bodoka was trying to counterattack Botan’s Drive Rush. However, Bodoka is too patient in his defensive mode, and though Botan will attempt this maneuver a few more times in the match, it does not succeed.
    3:23 - This is Botan’s game plan at its most successful, she has Bodoka in the corner and is hammering away at him for huge damage. Just look at how Bodoka’s health lead melts away over the next fifteen seconds.
    3:43 - Another, much more successful adaptation by Botan. Once again, Bodoka has switched to his offensive mode with two Windclad stocks, Botan doesn’t block the first Condor Spire, but after blocking some Light attacks, she jumps backward to dodge the second Condor Spire and hit Bodoka on the way down as a combo starter. She does this several more times throughout the match, and though it’s not always successful, it makes it more difficult for Bodoka to execute the offensive side of his game plan. This might actually be what her teammates are referring to at 10:40.
    5:15 - This section is very interesting for reasons that are very hard to see. Bodoka once again goes on the offense with two Windclad stocks: Condor Spire, Light attacks, Condor Spire. Botan once again tries to dodge the second Condor Spire with a jump. However, Botan is in Burnout, so her hitstun from the Light attacks is longer than normal, and she cannot jump in time. Botan is once again in danger because she is in the corner while in the Burnout state. Bodoka, anticipating that Botan might immediately jump or use a throw again to counter a Drive Impact, jumps as Botan gets up to hit her either in mid-air or as she recovers from the whiffed throw. However, Botan chose neither and has the opportunity to hit Bodoka in mid-air, which she tries to do with her Level 3 Super. However Botan actually misses! Marisa’s Level 3 has a slow startup, so Bodoka lands on the ground before it hits him and he could have blocked it. It appears that Bodoka panicked and tried to jump again instead, which took too long and resulted in him getting hit anyway.
    6:12 - This moment points to a critical weakness for Botan. She has jumped straight up at the best possible timing; she is airborne while her opponent is in a long recovery animation, giving her an opportunity for a high damage combo with an air attack starter. However, Botan does not know what combo to use. In a panic, she uses a Light air attack and then immediately jumps for another Light air attack, squandering what should have been an opportunity to win the round. Though Botan wins this round anyway, her inability to capitalize on this scenario is a significant issue.
    6:33 - Botan does attempt to improve the next time she’s in this position. Once again, she has jumped straight up at a good time and Bodoka is in an extended recovery animation. Botan attempts to use Heavy Attacks for a big damage combo. However, this is actually a mistake; Marisa’s Heavy Punch in the air does not combo into her Heavy Kick on the ground, so Bodoka is able to recover and block. Botan actually needs to use a Heavy attack in the air but a Medium combo on the ground, but she does not realize this.
    9:27 - This is the most heartbreaking moment of the match for me. Botan has once again jumped straight up at the right time and Bodoka is in a recovery animation. If Botan reacts correctly here, she can hit Bodoka with a big enough combo to end the round and win. However, Botan does not know the right combo to use here and once again tries to use Heavy attacks. Not only would this not have been a true combo, Botan presses her Heavy Punch in the air too late and lands on the ground before the attack connects, so she does not hit Bodoka at all.
    Botan fought well and made some great strategic adaptations, but ultimately there were too many holes in her game plan and she was unable to take advantage of the opportunities she created for herself.

      @krysbrynhildr ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, watching this match and not really knowing whether VDK is an FGC/Street Fighter pro or not, Botan still puts up a good fight and also clearly has a lot better idea of the fundamentals than I do, but also at the same time doesn't necessarily have a lot of experience with Street Fighter or SF6 specifically with its kind of weird new features.
      The amount of time she spends in burnout really really hurt her in these matches, due to using her Drive gauge constantly for offense and just doing normal blocks for defense instead of trying to refill her bars with Drive Parries (which is still a weird concept to me too, coming from games like Guilty Gear where the special blocks drain the gauge instead of refilling it).
      Overall a really close set of matches and good plays at least to a casual eye on her end. Thanks for the more in depth writeup btw, since it helps someone at the more casual level like me have a better understanding of the specifics of where things went wrong.

    It's easy to believe that Botan is some kind of emotionless, powerful lion that's always cool and collected. When you see some of her earlier FPS streams, the way she'd cruise around and take people out really made you think she was fearless. But that personality always hides a lot of passion, love, and kindness towards others. Look at the Gen 5 yearly celebrations where Botan made ramen bowls one year, then chopsticks this year. Look at how she spoke from the heart when saying goodbye to Coco when several of them met in ARK. She said one of her regrets was not saying goodbye to her father when he was passing away when asked of a sin when in the recent Minecraft Haunted House. And you can see here, she was overwhelmed with emotion and frustration - some relief too I'm sure - of how she just couldn't quite overcome the opponent. She did really well and had an amazing journey to get there, and I hope she rested well afterwards. Botan has a very kind heart and beautiful soul. wow, that was an incredible event. superb video editing too, JShay! i was captivated from start to finish. thanks for sharing this gem with us. i almost started to cry when botan was sobbing, i felt immersed just as koro-san was watching the intense and close games, and i laughed when dogura-san botched the final game. loved every minute of it. 😁

    Botan takes team tournaments like this very seriously. It's also why she doesn't participate in stuff like APEX tournaments, as she didn't feel like she would have enough time to practice and would fear letting her team down.

    Idk much about Botan's prior experience with fighting games, but she showed some serious mental fortitude in her play for what I can only assume is someone from a beginner/casual level doing this seriously. Fighting games are a whole other level of mental strain in competition, every win and loss feel so surprisingly more personal, doubts can so heavily alter play patterns, and having someone who can capitalize on it only makes it that much more terrifying.
    She absolutely killed it though, big ups to the lion for putting everything she had out there for her team, and showing us all just how tough she is!

      @Halo003qd ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's kinda a shitty move for the tourny though. Sasatikk had a full round to calm down and recenter and Dogura went from a stressful 2-1 victory straight into another match with placement determining outcomes, and then Team Dogura's VC had to go up against a rested red team captain. seemed set up for failure.

    • @guilhermeberbert
      @guilhermeberbert ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Halo003qd dogura is the pro, he is expected to win against sasa-san 100 times out of 100 no matter the circunstances. but that's the cruelty of the FT1 rule. in an explosive game, like sf6, you just don't have enough time to adapt.
      haitani, the pro who was commentating the event next to yamato, said he met dogura in the backstage after the tournament and told him "that ft1 rule has got to go, bro"

    Botan was super nervous for these matches and hearing her bawl her heart, she clearly put a lot into this emotionally, so when all was done for her she just had to let it all out. Botan is extremely good at keeping it together but she couldn't help but let her frustration show here. It's wonderful to see, in a way, as it shows she clearly had a lot of passion for this tournament and her team and wanted to do well for them. Glad she enjoyed the experience overall, especially since Dogura gave her a smile towards the end.

    I feel bad for Botan. She's such a competitive person, she always strives to be the best in a competitive situation like this. She actually had to stop gaming competitively in tournament settings like this because it became bad for her health. She HATES losing (which is something I share with her), especially in a team situation like this, when you feel like you've let everyone down. So I feel for her here. There's a lot of emotion and a lot of tension, and it all came out like this.

    I just love how supportive everyone was for Botan as well as her being genuinely cracked at the game as well as her opponent pulling off some seriously good plays to beat her. Her cry set off the primal dad instincts though as well as hits hard because we've all felt that cry of frustration you can't switch off before, especially with how it comes from the laid back Botan.
    I'm also interested in how the set up for the matches works on stage with vtubers involved. Is there a rig in the back she's using? Is she remoting in or they've set up a regular online lobby but using the stage machines?
