Where do you start? Every band that Eric Johnson plays with are just top-shelf musicians. Virtuosos who all play to support each other. What an absolute treat.
I met Eric Johnson before he went on at the Dallas guitar show in late 2000 and spent 30 minutes talking to him about tuning his guitar. He was focused on getting on with the show
I love how this composition didn't just become a recording, but a live portal to Manhattan, it did change a bit in this performance, but the older part still remains ❤
There is not one video or recording that I have ever found of Eric from back in 1981 with Kyle Brock and Bill Maddox. That was the best that it ever was. I used to see him in a small club for $1 on Sunday nights at Sneeky Pete's in Dallas back in 1980 and 1981 and it was mind blowing.
Man, what a great steady groove, love it how the drums set in at the beginning! Eric's jamming never gets boring IMHO, always extremely melodic. Love the jazzy feel to this one a lot!😃
Johnson is the maestro. He makes it look easy, doesn't he? First time I heard him, I thought it was two or three guitarists playing together! All good wishes.
I'll never forget the first time my guitar teacher introduced me to this song back in 1997, I had no idea a guitar could produce such a range of amazing sounds. ❤
Watch EJ play is always a pleasure. So juicy and delicious guitar tones... And his playing... Amazing! Only he can pull that off. Congratulations and please keep on with what I like to call: "music with a Soul".
One of EJ's best. This song has everything in it. Rock, jazz, blues, soul, slide guitar, beautiful melody, and fuzzy guitar solos that are darn near perfect.
I was late to receive the good word of "Manhattan." In my younger days, when Venus Isle came out, I played the album through, and this felt like elevator music to me. I was too young and immature to understand, to feel, to get it. Some time, probably around a decade ago, I gave this another listen, and it clicked. The genius and the heart of this song revealed itself to me. Now, I simply turn to this track and surrender myself to the sheer towering musicality of it all. As always, Eric's music has led me somewhere I didn't realize I needed to be. My essential soul owes him for generations of music that continue to reach inside me and speak to truths of life and love.
It only took you 9 months to post another video. We missed you Eric. Seriously keep up the good work. You inspired me to pick up and put down the guitar. Edit: I picked the guitar back up it’s just when I see him play this good I feel like I have so much to learn.
I saw Eric Johnson during the ‘Ah Via Musicom’ in 81 or 82. (On a side note it was on a double bill ticket: $22 for Steve Morse one night and Eric Johnson the next. Those were the days.). Anyway, after a late start Johnson started really tearing up the place. During ‘Desert Rose’ he launched into an extended improvisation that was simply awe inspiring. At first I was following him. Before long he moved beyond my comprehension. A little while later he moved beyond THE BAND’S comprehension. They dropped back into the original grove and waited for him to come out of wherever realm he was exploring. After a couple minutes he suddenly lurched and looked up as if somebody had tapped him in the shoulder and told him it was time to come home. Forty years later and I’ve never again seen someone so possessed by the muse.
Seen Eric about 10 times, once at the Paramount decades ago. If you get a chance to see Eric, one of the greatest guitarists and song writers, do it. You will enjoy it...💯 🔥🎸🔥
Way to make that Strat sing Eric! Thanks for all of the great tunes! Been listening for over 30 years now, and you sound just a wonderful and fresh as the first time I heard you play!
Eric Johnson...my favorite musician of all times!!! Show...He is a high level of play and create musics, a level beyond of this Earth...phenomenal person and player!!! I can't be to listen your musics any day...Congractulations!!! Eric Johnson forever!!
It Is Sooo Great That You Can Remember All Of Your Previous Hits And Play Them Note Per Note And Add So Much To Them But Never Change The Original Melody. You Are Beyond Amazing.
Nice to see that Eric plays better than ever. Wish I could see him live some day but I guess he doesnt do much international touring. Still remember the day I picked up the Venus Isle without knowing anything about him. I had just read some great reviews and decided to give it a try. Decision I didnt have to regret.
Eric Johnson Makes me both want to Quit and Practice all at the same time
Nope! he makes me look for that perfect Tone, for all Music I play!
If I had a what? fender Cyber Twin? And his hands! Ha! Love you, Eric Johnson!
I moved to Austin in 1985, I asked who’s the best guitarist in town and everyone said, Eric Johnson. Turns out they were right and he still is.
This start of this comment made it sound like a bro down
Total respect for Eric always soloing off script and just letting the song take his fingers where his heart leads him.
I'm a fan. Eric is legend
Still awesome. One of my favorite guitarist.
That, kids, is how you play guitar. So melodic!
Eric is Legend of course you know if you see his name, then it's going to be awesome👍
When Eric takes a dump it comes out in a melodic way. Soul in his shit. Beautiful.
Where do you start? Every band that Eric Johnson plays with are just top-shelf musicians. Virtuosos who all play to support each other. What an absolute treat.
His fingers are still Young..🙌🏻
I applaud Eric for jamming on the intro like that, taking some chances with a tune that’s normally so structured. This is excellent!
Eric doesn't play tinkle dink shit. I love this music.
Ill never forget being in 10th grade and listening to this album in my walkman every day for that whole year. What memories to great music 1990
Not to burst your bubble but this song wasn’t recorded until 1996 😅
YUP he is the REAL DEAL! OMG. And he was a protege. a PURE pleasure to grow old with Eric.
I met Eric Johnson before he went on at the Dallas guitar show in late 2000 and spent 30 minutes talking to him about tuning his guitar. He was focused on getting on with the show
Every time I hear him, I'm reminded why he's my favorite guitarist today. Also one of the sweetest dudes I've ever met.
I love how this composition didn't just become a recording, but a live portal to Manhattan, it did change a bit in this performance, but the older part still remains ❤
Holy shit, this man has STILL GOT IT!! Incredible.
Seeing this song being played for the first time during the first G3 tour was simply mesmerizing and that was 27 years ago! And still is...
Agreed. I was blown away when I saw this on g3. Even tho I was such a vai fan, I thought ej just stole the show
No "tracks", no dancers, no lip syncing, no video, no pyro. Just pure 'elfin' talent. My God what a musician.
Best guitarist. And so few people know this.
I would love to see this guy live some time.
Some of the Best tones from a guitar ever.....
As well as The playing that gets right into Your soul....
We all know WHY! Biggest Jimi Hendrix fan....

One of the best to ever do it. What a player!
Damn, EJ is the GOAT. Cheers!
30-some years since first being privileged to see EJ perform live, this still evokes chills. So gifted he is.
The band sounds incredible. Roscoe is such a fantastic bassist. I Love what he brings to this tune!

Eric plays heavenly. Beautiful notes, beautiful tone.
I can't believe I've never heard of Eric Johnson before, although I remember hearing Cliffs of Dover.
Whoever recorded this is wonderful. Felt like I was there!
Damn he can change the whole vibe and feel of the song effortlessly. A Master of his time
theres nobody else that can play richer notes on a guitar. every note that comes out of the speaker system are amazingly pure!
Love from Philippines ❤
That intro jam is pretty amazing not gonna lie sheesh.. lmao The way he just leans into the fuzz face for sustaining the notes is epic

Just an incredibly articulate and immensely talented guitarist!! Absolutely amazing!
WHAT A PLAYER. ONE OF THE BESG OF ALL TIME!
Man, what a great steady groove, love it how the drums set in at the beginning! Eric's jamming never gets boring IMHO, always extremely melodic. Love the jazzy feel to this one a lot!😃
The best intro of Manhattan.❤🙏
Out of all of my guitar heroes I have seen live. Eric hands down has the best tone and seems like a vessel for the music he creates.
I can´t think of a song that uses the 5 way switch of the strat in such a perfect way more than this tune. Amazing as usual!
sounds better than ever and that tone....my god. Eric's phrasing is second to none.....truly transcendent playing.
Eric is still on fire. This guy is inspirational and took many guitar players to the next level. This Paramount Theatre show sounds amazing.
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! THX MAN!!!
Johnson is the maestro. He makes it look easy, doesn't he? First time I heard him, I thought it was two or three guitarists playing together! All good wishes.

So so nice to be able to see you play from afar.
Wonderful. Thanks Eric.
One of EJ's best. This song has everything in it. Rock, jazz, blues, soul, slide guitar, beautiful melody, and fuzzy guitar solos that are darn near perfect.
The chord changes and note selection are perfection. Amazing composition.
Melodically fluid as ever.

Love that intro... he's getting more bluesy and Hendrixian with age. My favorite style of his!
Every performance is different. He'll play it completely different next time.
As somebody that plays guitar also he makes hybrid picking looking effortless!!!
Switching back and forth from the pick to the hands back to the pick
Still my favorite sounding guitarist and Manhattan is one his best, such a Beautiful, majestic song. And his improvisation is always amazing.
a true master of his craft!!!...legend Eric Johnson 🙌

The best electric guitar piece ever written!
I feel like I'm finally a band member who can match Mr. Johnson's dynamic rhythm.
