This character had serious potential Nolan's batman universe. Instead of making him green and whacky, they could've given him a dark and gritty background. Perhaps "mental illness meets genius".
Great video. Just wondering but how do you feel about the Gotham interpretation of The Riddler? Personally I love it and it's probably my second favorite Riddler after The Batman version. I really hate most people see Riddler as a joke when he's one of Batman's most dangerous adversaries when you think about it
One of my favorite interpretations of the Riddler is from the Arkham games. “I must say, Dark Knight, your desperate fumblings have exceeded my admittedly rather meager expectations. I’m impressed.”
The Riddler is often considered by many to be Batman’s second most notorious villain, but he doesn’t seem to get much attention in any modern works(of course, except for the Gotham TV series).
Riddler is one of my favorites. One thing that gets on my nerves is how people say Hush was the mastermind in the Hush storyline, when it was really the Riddler who deduced Batman’s identity and pulled all of the strings the entire time. Also, I cannot stand the older Riddler outfit. The suit and bowler hat are way better than the tight spandex in my opinion. They make him look like an eccentric game show host, which I really like.
Faxanadu Agreed. I don't know. I just love the idea of riddler hiding in the shadows and controlling things in the background while at the same time giving Batman a headache.
You know what I hate about every Batman media that has the Riddler in it? Every single god damn time, I want Nigma to win. Every time, I just want Batman to lose once, just once. But, as it is with every Batman villain, he almost wins then gets beaten by the power of lazy writing and some bullshit that Batman pulled out of his utility belt.
Perhaps you should check out the show Gotham then? Batman isn't Batman yet to beat him up, and Nigma's mostly on a fair playing ground with everyone else.
Edward Nygma is so unfairly underrated Batman foe! I always liked him because he is an intellectual challenge, and brings out Batman "s detective skills.
i have to agree. i like the concept of the Riddler but feel like he never really delivered any sense of dread as a rogue. he always seemed to fit better in the campy '66 batman series then today's darker storylines. if you asked just about anyone who the best riddler was - they'd probably say Jim Carrey(who was basically Ace Ventura in a riddler costume). So if batman is the world's greatest detective, then what's so scary about a skinny crossword aficionado who leaves clues at literally every crime scene? ...bat punch to the face.
Scarecrow!!!! The Riddler and Scarecrow are such amazing villains and characters, I'd love to see them both in movies more often! I didn't like how Jim Carrey portrayed Edward, though. It looked like he didn't take the role seriously at all, and it just made it look like a joke😓
I remember that I had a Comic book where The Riddler and Batman where fighting against a Tree/Plant Dude. Riddler was a Detective at this time and was Even able to solve the case before Batman. Still he needed Batmans fist to overwhelm the Plant Dude. Unfortunately I do not posses this Comic anymore
Ikr, in Gotham they never explained who he was, never even showed his creepy look, he's never used in the movies(that would probably be a CGI mess) Honestly he deserves so much considering he's the first reaccuring villain, and he's so cool..
Although I do find the Riddler interesting, Two Face will always be my favorite Batman villain. Mostly because unlike most of Batman's other villains, I'm interested more in the character than what his gimmick is. I like the fact that he had a relationship with Batman (also Bruce Wayne depending on who's writing him) before he became Two Face. I feel that's an angle that doesn't get explored enough with him. If there were to be a Two Face equivalent of The Killing Joke, it would play out completely different because unlike the Joker, Harvey was Bruce's friend so there would be a sense of regret from Bruce having to see his friend act like this
I think the reason the Riddler is underutilized is because it's probably very difficult to write for him. His whole persona is being cryptic so it takes a lot of careful thought to include his character and make it fitting. I think a good execution of the Riddler would probably make for the best comic in DC though.
My first experience with Batman was with Batman Forever when I was a kid, so the Riddler always holds a special place to me. Such an interesting character.
I always prefered the idea that the riddler is actually smarter than batman or atleast equal in intellegence because I always wanted to see a battle of the minds between batman and riddler
Really would love more of Batman’s villains like the Riddler and Scarecrow to show up more. Their inclusion in the Arkham games were amazing and I’d love to see more on the comic side
The riddler is pretty great, aside from his costume. I kinda hate his look most of the time. Except for in Arkham Knight. He's decent there. I can't wait to see him in The Batman.
Riddler has always been my favorite Batman villain too. Such a shame we never got to see a Nolan film with him in. I feel like no one ever really knows how to write him. The animated series only really used him successfully once (Riddlers Reform) and even the best Riddler comic story (Dark Night Dark City) ended a bit disappointingly with the Riddler just being a patsy for the demon.

6:01 Actually...there is an explanation. The Penguin tricked him and locked him in a building full of explosives to die. Nygma survived, but the explosion rattled his brain again and brought back his Riddler persona.
Riddler is but underutilized and underappreciated which really sucks because he has the potential to be one of the best Batman villains as far as I'm concerned. Personally I rather liked him as a reformed character and would have preferred DC left him that way since he could have easily become the new Question after DC phased out Montoya (of course Tim Drake would work too). As a villain working out of Gotham I think DC should work on making him more akin to the Jigsaw killers in the SAW franchise as they're pretty much what the Riddler was meant to be. It seriously irks me that Nygma is always portrayed as being insane since I was introduced to the character during Batman TAS, liked him better as one of the few sane individuals Batman fights.
Please do a video about Scarecrow. He’s such an amazing character and personally my favourite Batman villain, and while admittedly has had a lot of silly costumes and personalities over the years (which I attribute to writers overplaying his obsession with fear and his toxin) at his best he’s a detached and manipulative genius with actual training for a job that requires him to understand how people think, and can use people’s darkest fears against them.
