This TYCO Canadian Pacific Hasn't Run In Years - Can We Make It?

  • A buddy of mine was walking through a train store and found this tyco Canadian Pacific F9 engine going for $7. After a quick test it was clear it wasn't gonna run without some work so today I decided to have a go at trying to make it run again. Will it work?

I always look forward to your videos. I may not have trains for myself but it does not mean I cannot have a love for model trains. I truly enjoy watching you fix the various engines/locomotives (I still do not know the difference between the two. Maybe one day someone will explain it to me). There is something pleasing to me when you make them run. Thank you Harrison. ❤😊❤🤗❤🇺🇸

@@SMTMainline - My brother & I received a Tyco slot car set for Christmas 1972. The Tyco motor had a frame made out of a C -channel shaped piece of metal that was formed into a square shape, with the flat side out. The field magnets were placed into opposite sides of the frame. The armature was in between the magnets & had its bearing holes going through the two other sides of the frame - with a spur gear at one end of the armature shaft. One of my friends had an AFX slot car set - those cars had an armature that was similar in design to the Power Torque motor.

CP Rail has a good paint scheme. Beginning in 1992 CP Rail gained access to the Port in South Philadelphia via its Delaware & Hudson Railway by way of the ConRail 25th St. viaduct, a two mile long double track concrete structure. I photographed the pac-man scheme on numerous EMD SD40-2 , SW-8 , SW-1200RS, 50' green plug door newsprint boxcars and yellow wide vision cabooses.

That's the second Tyco F-unit body, too. I'm not sure what happened to that tooling, Tyco made it because the original one had pretty well worn out, but when Mantua came back they must have gotten that old tooling and fixed it. IHC ended up with the assets that General Foods kept but never made any of these.

I actually like the paint scheme they had on these. I have one freight car that has the Pac-Man paint Scheme but is a light blue. I honestly wish that typo never went with this power torque because that pivot gear is the most unreliable piece that they have on it they expect a lot for that little tiny gear to actually power the entire locomotive if they went with a drive system similar to the steam engines and then use the driveshaft system I think they would have had a better product. I would agree with you it is pretty mint to actually see the low-speed performance I'm quite amazed myself. A nice good easy restoration nice job.

SMT - Both Roger Lee & Martin Gotham, as well as I, would like to see you tinker with your British OO scale locomotives. SMT - try putting the straight sections of your Lemax track together & see if your Tri - Ang & Hornby locomotives will operate on it (Since the Lemax track has a taller rail than code 100 HO track.). As for your Trix Twin locomotives, you could see if the center rail sliding shoe contact has a lug where you could solder a thin, flexible wire to complete the circuit connection with the transformer. You could also try laying a stiff, large diameter bare wire down the center of the Lemax track for testing the Trix Twin locomotives.

@@TomLuTon - Tom, you are right about the model train manufacturers not producing a lot of GP7s - & yes, they were a common model found on most railroads. It seems the various manufacturers made various different models when it came to road switchers; Tyco made Alco Century models, Bachmann made GE models, I recall Life-Like making some kind of EMD GP model or Alco RS model - the same with Model Power. AHM/IHC had their GP18 & BL2. Athearn had the greatest variety of road switchers.

In terms of models, they were probably easy to make since they didn't have handrails etc

@@SMTMainline - that is a good point SMT! About the only handrails found on a model of an F-unit were molded-on handrails for the cab doors. The fact that many of the Tyco road-switcher diesels didn't have any handrails also would support that view!
