1975 TYCO CN Locomotive - Will it Run Again?

  • I found this 1975 tyco mantua power torque locomotive for sale in the consignment section of a train store for $7. The condition was clearly rough but I decided to buy it anyway as a project. As would be discovered this locomotive was clearly high milage as almost everything in the drive was quite worn out. Will it ride the rails again?

DUDE!! This was your best by far!!! Somehow you resurrected a Tyco! Why? Because this hobby is fun! The Hockey tape on a CN locomotive! You couldn’t script that any better!!! Awesome!!!

As an american, I don't know about these things, but would think wrapping a Canadian train in hockey tape would fix almost any problem.

For some reason this locomotive made me smile seeing it at the end. There sure was a lot up build up on it but the thing really just wants to run and you did an awesome job getting it there. I hope it now has a nice spot in your collection

That's really cool you got it running. That looks to be the same era hey gp20 that I have but it had an unfortunate accident because I accidentally dropped it. When I looked up the Canadian national Tyco locomotives are rare in the states I think they were mostly marketed in Canada. I read that info from a tyco website that I sent you I think. I got to say hearing that story that your grandfather told you made me smile plus I never thought of that idea.

With some body modifications and the inclusion of some correct Alco 6 axle sideframes and small aIr tanks in place of those Tyco GP-20 fuel tank parts below the frame you could have a FC del Pacifico AP1620 Empalme shops (1979 ) rebuild.

Removing the hockey tape, leaving grime on it... wow, it now looks like a hard worker with exhaust and grease. Don't remove too much of it... add some hand railings and you got an awesome brute... And, from one side it's a C430... the other, it's a C630!

Well....the OCD in me says put the same side frames on the same truck, as it's totally believable that MLW would do anything to keep another ALCO controlling mosquitoes on lines around the Great White North. But, I can't argue with Opa.

You did well. It's amazing TYCO made so many ALCO diesels no GE engines the ALCO resembled the GENERAL ELECTRIC engines. I was so glad you found spare parts for this ALCO , Harrison I could hardly tell the difference on the side frames on the trucks. You make this CN model railroader on this side of the border even happier you saved this engine. Great job👍✅

Not that this is relevant but, my Life-like little blue controller finally died. (I was expecting this to happen since it’s from the 80’s-90’s) I’m stuck trying to find a controller that is cheaper but reliable. I only have 5 ho scale locomotive and just like to run them for fun. Any suggestions?

A basic used or new MRC DC controller should be good. I’d avoid older DC controllers if possible.

You need a 3d printer for new parts for the Locomotives

I don't know why but the last 3 or 4 videos I had to turn on Closed Captioning I couldn't hear you and my volume is all the way up I can hear other videos just fine but not yours I have no idea what's wrong.

Seems fine on my end but it's possible I didn't have the gain turned up high enough. It can be fixed slightly in post production if it's overdone it will distort the audio.
