A missed opportunity would've been to give Venom Snake a higher Medical skill signifying his past as a combat medic.
Can't really, almost all his memories where cleaned out when he was on his coma (they kept him under to transfer most memories as possible from BB to VS while deleting his own). He could barely remember who he was, even his own name, so imagine remembering his medical expertise (he can maybe remember some of his past because since he was waken up in urgency after cipher discovered about him, not all memories were transfered, therefore not all were deleted).

For the Kaz part, He is partially blind so he couldnt see that well.
For Huey, he thought Snake was dead for the past 9 years.
For Huey, he didn't recognize the voice, and his face, while an excellent imitation of Big Boss, isn't QUITE the same.
For Kaz, he couldn't see very well, so the voice is the important part. He didn't recognize it.

@@masnidebelicrnac Well, there's speculation that what we're seeing in Ground Zeroes isn't even real. Just a "recreation" of events playing out in Venom's shattered mind. Which is why Big Boss has Venom's voice. In all likelihood, the real Big Boss still sounded like David Hayter (it was only a few months after Peace Walker, after all).

In a cassette tape of the truth it is recorded a dialogue between ocelot and kaz in wich ocelot tells kaz that they protect a fake big boss or something like that
There was actually a ton of evidence to suggest this. I remember seeing a theory that Big Boss wasn't Venom Snake from the trailers alone like a year before the game came out. One thing was the fact that Venom uses E-Cigars which Big Boss has previously said that he only ever uses the "real thing."

I remember a fan theory about Venom being Frank Jaeger shortly after The Phantom Pain was revealed to be a Metal Gear Solid game. Frankly, it pissed me off because I knew it was plausible given Kojima's record and it would have been such a stupid plot device (not like the series hasn't had its fair share of those, though). And while not exactly true, it might have well been. Then at least we would have been Grey Fox pre-cyber ninja and not some random medic.

But venom has the same memories as bb, so he would have thought he said that too, and you see venom a couple of times trying to smoke a proper cigar but miller stops him during the birthday cutscene, and the he has one when quiet shoots open the box
needamuffin he isn't some random medic though in mgsv, he literally is big boss, the medic is the player, and if you ain't playing as the proper snake, then the next best thing is a person that looks, sounds and has the same memories and experiences, which is venom. So to me, venom is better than anyone else besides big boss. Playing as frank would never had made sense in the story, Frank was never owner of a pf, and never looked like snake
I swear as soon as Ocelot and Kaz told me Eli and Big Boss weren't related I screamed: "Oh come the fuck on that's clearly Liquid, how the fuck is that someone else? Who the hell was that kid if not Liquid?" Plus at the start of the game the doctor said it would cause permanent brain damage if the shrapnel was removed, to which I said: "Okay I'm looking forward to seeing how they explain this when he has no shrapnel in MGS4." And when the twist came: "Oh! Ooooooh."

It's funny that Kaz's first and final words in the game are essentially the same and sort of foreshadow his future.

That's what he thought at the end when he realizes Big Boss just used him as a distraction for Cipher and didn't let him in on the bigger picture.
What roll had Kaz in the previous games? I only played TPP and GZ and I liked Kaz in the PP. I'm really curious now
In Peace Walker he and Big Boss met on the battlefield when they were enemies but soon became friends. Then Kaz had the idea to set up what was essentially the first Motherbase, the one seen at the end of Ground Zero's being destroyed by Cipher, and create a business out of soldiers lives.
Militares San Frontiers (Soldiers Without Borders) was their first business because of Kaz before the events of Peace Walker but after Snake Eater and Portable Ops.
Apart from that he was first seen in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, a game set after the Phantom Pain and Metal Gear, as a mission adviser for Snake. Then in Metal Gear Solid for the PS1, he was a mission adviser for Snake but at the end of the game it turns out that it was really Liquid posing as him and Kaz had already been murdered days prior to the mission on Shadow Moses.
Such a tragic end for a character that gave his all to a cause only to be screwed over by the man he looked up to the most.

Yeah, Liquid Snake first appeared in Metal Gear Solid too so it was a well designed disguise to have him be a person we've never seen before. Doubt anybody guessed it at all :)

Here’s a really obscure hint:
After the credits in ground zeroes there is a sneak peak of phantom pain, it shows you the part where you are in the hospital bed and the doctor says you’ve been in a coma for nine years. However, if you look carefully you can see you are not in the same bed you’re in in TPP, you are one bed over, where Big Boss really is.

To add to the Kaz scene: once you pick him up, he'll tell you to "say it, those words I've been waiting to hear," referring to "Kept you waiting, huh?" There's no prompt for it, but if you press a button on the controller (I forget which one, although I think it's the Action button) Venom will say the line, convincing Kaz it's Big Boss.
Still, in general, I thought how quiet Venom was most of the time, especially when meeting with significant people he should really be reacting to, was a hint as well. Probably an unintentional one, since I'm sure they didn't hire Kiefer Sutherland to only talk for what feels like 5 minutes in-game, but a hint that it's not Big "Let me describe this handgun for 5 minutes" Boss.

Niflheim I'm siding with social awkwardness given the random ass handgun lecture in mgs 3 lol. Guy practically ignores all of eva's advances yet gets super giddy when you put an m1911 in his hands. Though admittadly you could just write that off as him being young, and his personality takes a bit of a 180 following the events of mgs 3.

Fake cigars was a major hint. Big Boss loves cigars, he would rather stop smoking than the use fake cigars.
Well, Venom does smoke cigars. If you play MGSV on your Birthday, a cutscene will play, Venom starts smoking a cigar, which was light by quiet’s sniper.
The Phantom Cigars aren’t “fake cigars” either, theirs plants and other ingredients inside them. Venom uses Phantom Cigars on mission to make time fly by faster.
Anywho, it’s just a gameplay mechanic.

Something I noticed from the beginning that I've not yet seen pointed out: Venom wears a ponytail, Jack lets his mullet run free.

ModestEgg What made it for me is: In MGS4 BB doesn't have a horn, a bionic arm and BB have a BIG S SCAR on his chest and when you woke there's no scar in that area. :)
Another clue, that I thought was very odd in my first play through but didn't think much about is that Venom's stats are all A or A+ or A++ or something, whereas even some random guards have S ranks. I thought it was odd that Big Boss wasn't an S rank for anything.

A++ is also Big Boss skill rank in Peace Walker. There's also S rank soldiers in Peace Walker.
That's something that really doesn't matter, and is a gaming conceit.
Big Boss/Venom is still the ultimate soldier. In fact, there is a mod that gives more appropriate ranks to all the story-based Mother Base members in Phantom Pain.
Venom gets S++ in Combat, Miller gets S++ in Support and S+ in Intel, Ocelot gets S++ in Intel and S+ in Combat, Code Talker is S++ in Medical, and so on.
It even fixes a glaring problem with Silent Basilisk (the mute Mujahideen fighter you rescue in "Where Do the Bees Sleep?"). You can't fire him - he's marked as essential and you can't unmark him. Once you rescue him once, you're stuck with him, no matter what. And his stats SUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.
The mod helps to fix that and gives him an S rank in Support, so he's not quite the burden he was. You still can't unmark him though.
I wish they left an hint/easter egg where venom's medic stats were higher than all the other ones

The way I figured out Venom wasn't the real Big Boss was probably the geekiest, most obscure way possible.
During the scene when Venom enters the Quarantine Platform, Venom said there was a very sweet smell in there. Well, in an optional radio conversation in MGS3 with The Boss, soon-to-be-Big Boss says that he has absolutely no sense of smell.
When I played that scene for the first time, I said "Wait a minute, Big Boss doesn't have sense of smell, how the hell could he smell that?" and the person sitting next to me at the time said "How in the hell do you know that?!"
That was a joke line as The Boss followed up with "then I guess you'll have to trust your instincts as a gamer." Games messing with you since you can't smell what snake does

When I played MGSV TPP I immediately think wait if this is Naked Snake then why isn't he talking alot?
I was really annoyed how silent Vrnom Snake was throughout the game but it made sense considering not even venom himself was sure who he was he simply accepted it.
Still, these silent moments are extremely awkward especially during the ride to the sahelanthropus with skull face where venom just awkwardly stares at him who threatens to kill all of humanity
The more time it passes the more I realize what a genius and poetic way to end the franchise this was. All my admiration for Kojima
Chronologically this isn't the last game that would go to Metal Gear Rising revengance

Also, Hideo Kojima doesn't consider Revengeance to be canon. When you play Ground Zeroes, there is a bonus mission, Deja Vu, where you recreate some of the iconic scenes from the original Metal Gear Solid. Throughout the map you'll find the official logos for all Metal Gear games created.
The Kojima-made canon games will disappear when exposed to a certain light on an assault rifle you can find, and Miller will say something reverent about them. The non-canon games won't disappear, however, and Miller will say something negative about them, or just be dismissive.
Revengeance was one of the "non-canon" games. Miller basically says "What is this ...?" as if to say "What the hell is this crap?"
I realize Revengeance has a lot of fans, but Kojima isn't one of them.

The portals that sucked up the Mother Base soldiers in 1975 were actually time portals, and they were transported into the far-flung future where nanomachines had destroyed the entire planet. It wasn't some alien planet as they initially thought. It was Earth.

To be honest, when I first played this, I had this weird feeling that Ishmael might have been Big Boss, it was probably the voice and the way he had a “mentor” feel to him
As soon as I heard Kiefer Sutherland's voice coming from Ishmael, I immediately said "That's Big Boss. I'm just a decoy." And I spent the rest of the game looking for clues that confirmed my suspicions.

Well, for me it was Quiet. She enters the hospital room from the right, kills the nurse and doctor and then she says "not yet, the patient in the next bed saw my face"... but she never went to the left bed where the real big boss was, so I was like wtf? I saw her face, so I'm not the one she was trying to kill in the first place?

Because she saw skullface (venom snake) who was burned badly and didn't think it's big boss, big boss of course woke up earlier than venom and escaped the hospital, no sense in keeping both targets until a attack happens.

JoaquizzleTwizzle Exactly the same thing I thought. Shouldn't bog boss have a hollow hole where his eye used to be? I dont think he would keep a shot up eye in there. Venoms eye looke ld perfectly fine it was just blind but wasn't shot looking.
Big Boss' eye wasn't shot out. When Ocelot shot by him the muzzle flash from the gun burnt his eye therefore rendering it too damaged for him to see out of anymore yet still pretty much in tact.

I admit it did look excessive in the amount of blood used but Japanese games tend to do that a lot to add a large effect. But yeah it's either burnt or grazed or both.
DetectiveSadist Either way, burnt or grazed, the eyes intact enough to still be in his head. It could still be feasible that venom looked like Snake with his blind eye.
venom snake can run at 20 mph for what seems like forever, can react to sniper bullets that seem to break the sound barrier (with the use of reflex mode), and can take A LOT of bullets before falling in battle hes not big boss but he’s definitely terrifying
He doesn't have Big Boss's insane physical strength though. In Peace Walker, Big Boss could bench press Peace Walker and Zeke while trying that with Venon results in him getting squished.

@@jarjarbinks5255 Actually, Peace Walker (Bipedal) and Sahelanthropus are apparently of the same height (24/25 m). It probably looks smaller because of the PSP's graphical limitations. At least according to the official wiki.

Also, one little detail that I noticed was during the parasite section where Venom is "cured," the side effect is sterility. The code-talker speaks as though he is already not sterile, when in fact Big Boss was sterile for many years prior.

@@djbeema No, it wasn't disguised at all. It sounded exactly like Kiefer Sutherland. Both Big Boss and Venom's voices were undisguised in the hospital sequence.
You're probably thinking of the Ground Zeroes mission. During that sequence, the medic's (Venom Snake's) voice was pitched way down, so it was a lot deeper. However, fans brought the pitch back up, and realized it was Sutherland's voice.
Just another clue that Venom isn't what he seems.

I think there are times in the game when all of us succumbed to frustration and went apeshit on the enemies.
I know I did, and I've 100%ed the game several times. Even to this day, occasionally the game will pull something that's completely bullshit, and I'll say "Right. You're all dead."

At the beginning "Ishmael" says it's always good to patch your wounds when you're hiding from the enemy, a callback to him doing it during mgs3. Also venom snake doesn't believe in psychics when big boss had already met one.
During the Parasite outbreak on Mother Base's medical platform, Venom snake says he's able to smell Oranges or something along those lines.
However, Big Boss stated in.. either PeaceWalker or MGS3 that he does not have a sense of smell.
MGS3, but I think that was just a joke because we player cannot smell stuff in game. The Boss followed up with "then you just have to trust your instinct as a gamer."

I can't believe no one has mentioned the intro level when Ishamel says "You're pretty good" after killing your first enemy with the pistol. That by itself would point to 2 characters who would be behind Ishamel (Ocelot and Naked Snake). And since Ocelot was voiced by a different voice actor, the reveal was pretty much laid out quickly.
Except that Ishmael didn't exist.

in fairness, that was 20 years ago and big boss has done a *lot* of shit, so that might not stand out to him

A clue to the audience that Venom isn't Big Boss is that he has no idea what Revolver Ocelot is on about when he delivers the quote
He remembers the signature stuff like "Kept you waiting, huh?" but not the finer details (like Volgin "The Burning Man" later)
Also, this might not be a serious one but it was in Peace Walker so I'll let you all decide. If you happen to play PW then you'll remember the cutscenes before a big fight with a mech where Big Boss looks through his rifle with is RIGHT eye, so he always aims with the eyepatch side. It's kinda silly but unique and pretty legendary. Now look at 1:45, Venom aims just like any other soldier who wears an eyepatch, with the other functional eye. Not the eyepatch.

Honestly, I could tell something was up the moment I saw how Pacifistic Venom was. Big Boss was much more unforgiving in all iterations. But here every time there was a decision Venom chose to be fair and tried to find less violent solutions. His desire to not use child soldiers but instead rehabilitate them also stood out since Big Boss was pro-child soldiers.
Actually the one who wanted to rehabilitate the kids was Kaz, because saw himself in the kids and all, actually the first thing Venom says in MB is how remarkable their skills were.
Although I think you're right, big boss wasn't the one who wanted to rehabilitate the children that was Kaz. A better example would be his decision of what to do with Huey.

Couple of smaller ones not mentioned here
- Venom says he can smell a sweet scent through the mask in the quarantine level but Naked has no sense of smell.
- Naked says he would never smoke anything but the real thing and yet Venom uses an electronic cigar and even has a real one taken off him during the birthday scene.
- Ocelot is said to be in love with Naked but in MGSV when talking about quiet being in love with him he says "I was the same way once" showing he doesn't have the same feelings for Venom.
- Venom has to choose to use the parasites at the cost of making him infertile, however Naked was already infertile so it wouldn't have had any negative effects on him and made the choice easy.
- Venom still has an eyeball where as Naked has his shot out.
- No snake like scar on his chest that he gave himself during Peacewalker.
- Different style of hair and eye patch from what we are used to seeing on Naked.
- Zooming in on the reflection in the helicopter where you choose missions shows your custom made Venom instead of his Big Boss look.
- Venom doesn't speak Russian though Sokolov says Naked's Russian is impeccable (though this could just be for gameplay since for some reason Ocelot cant translate it for you either).
- Venom's horn is said to be impossible to remove and yet we have seen Naked in the future without it.
- Like Volgin, Quiet also seems to be hell bent on revenge but then gives up after getting close to him.

In MGS3 Eva seems to think Naked Snake is dumb when he doesnt understand that she is saying Ocelot is in love with him. th-cam.com/video/7HRnVCQtjuo/w-d-xo.html such as at 2:00 in this vid. Or the clip after when she says how Ocelot will even eat gross stuff just to eat the same things as Naked and that Naked is dense for not understanding what that means. Volgin even asks Ocelot if the reason he hasnt killed Naked Snake is because hes fallen for him and Ocelot pauses and tenses up instead of giving an answer.
This is just what springs to mind but there is LOT of stuff in the games saying Ocelot is gay and I recall something about one of the guys on the MGS3 commentary track straight up saying Ocelot fell in love with Naked snake at first sight. Give it a quick google if you want to see more examples.
But all in all if ocelot says Quiet wont kill Snake because shes in love with him and he was the same way once... I dont think thats a stretch to say hes was in love with Naked but doesnt feel the same way for Venom even though they are acting as the same person.

There's also the fact that Venom doesn't smoke nearly as much as Jack, he dresses differently too. Naked Snake wore black sleeves on all his camo, his eye patch had two straps, he didn't tuck his pants into boots, didn't wear scarves, and didn't wear any bulletproof vests with his camos. Venom also didn't have the same love for guns.

Another clue was that during Ground Zero's the medic in the helicopter has his face blurred and in a cutscene during TPP we see it again but we see Venom as the Medic. Another one is that in the ACC if you go first person and turn to the left you see that the picture of the pilot, Boss, Miller and Venom (Before his facial surgery) the photo is folded to cover Venom.

Cool video, Funny enough the main reason I figured it out early was the body double we kill in the original metal gear. Still, venom might be my favorite snake because out of all the attempts to recreate/preserve the idea of big boss, he is the only one that didn't know he wasn't actually him, his quiet downplayed existential crisis is delectable, and if this really is the last mgs I'm glad we get to be the original not-original big boss.
Mike Fisher actually depending on where in the timeline that mirror cutscene takes place, venom is the only one that knows he isnt big boss. Miller didnt know to the end and ocelot hypnotised himself to forget that venom wasnt big boss.
Just to clarify, I mean out of all the Snakes.Venom, Solid, Liquid, Solidus, and even Raiden were all trained to be like the original Big Boss/Naked Snake, and Venom is the only snake who actually thought he was big boss himself at any point.

As for Miller being blind ... that's left kinda vague. Some think he's entirely blind, others think he can still see, but his eyesight is damaged to the point of only being able to see basic shapes.

Pingas Pearce There's no evidence that Venom is colorblind...you can't really be a soldier if you're colorblind...unless you're referring to the cut mission, but his temporary color loss was because of his injury (I can't remember if he was shot or if it was an explosion)
messy8424 Actually, funny enough, you'll find that when you suffer a serious injury in the game, such as breaking a leg or getting a fatal shot. Once you spray your self or fix the bone in place you will find everything that is coloured red, coloured grey instead. Sometimes I would deliberately break my leg at mother base by falling from a great height, just to fix it and see the colour red fade away. I confirmed it was only red when I achieved demon snake and the red blood on venoms face would turn grey.
For me what gave it away was noticing that the picture of Big Boss in a vegative state between MG2 and MGS4(Remember this was before his body was rebuilt with bits and pieces of Venom, Liquid, and Solidus' bodies.) had no shrapnel or scarring on his forehead.
It makes sense, but it could also be that some of those people were just shocked to see him after nine years. They thought he was dead after all.
Through the first hours something kept bothering me in Venom's face but I couldn't tell. Then it got me that the eye patch was with three strings instead of two like Big Boss always wore. But I just though it was just a continuity error.
And then all the people besides Ocelot not recognizing him at first, being Kaz, Emmerich, M.S.F soldiers even if you play Love Deterrence, they come at you and look at him for some seconds.
But what really got me was Ocelot saying Eli's DNA didn't matched Venom's. Ocelot by this point was loyal to Big Boss and wouldn't fake the test, and sure as hell Kojima wouldn't mess up the canon like that. By this point I was sure, but didn't matter much since I was only a few hours away from the ending.
One clue I felt in the first hospital mission, is how Ishmael (Big Boss) talks to you like you're a newbie. Would you seriously teach the legendary soldier how to heal his wounds and compliment him on how to use a weapon?
I LOVED the Volgin hint. I just wish they played more with his resurrection. I was so dissapointed with what little they did with him.
They couldn't play with his resurrection, because he wasn't really there. The real Volgin died in 1964. The "Man on Fire" is just a hallucination Venom is seeing.

He interacts physically with the world on a scale too big to be just an illusion, and even kaz and ocelot can hear him when he attacks you in the "Voices" mission. I think seeing him as Volgin's normal form might be an hallucination, or just something to convey to the player that he's him, or maybe his perception of himself, but he's definitely real

Which is strange, because Ocelot is using the same thing he did in MGS2 and 4, doublethink. He convinces himself that Venom is in fact Big Boss, and he believes it throughout the whole game.
Can't forget about the fact that Big Boss was in MGS4 with no horn or bionic arm to be found
In MGS4, Big Boss mentions that he was reconstructed using parts of Liquid and Solidus, and back then when the trailers came, before the reveal of course, it was kind of consensus that this line would be a excuse to any major injury Big Boss would take

There is only one big boss venom is a hallucination
Ocelot set up the attack on Mother Base in 1975. Skullface had no need or motive to attack Mother Base, nor was he likely present at the attack. Ocelot however, in his lifelong quest to fulfil his mother’s will, had motive to remove the now directionless Big Boss.
At the end of Peace Walker we see Big Boss abandon his own interpretation of the Boss’s will. He no longer believed in the Boss. The hero of GroznyjGrad was gone and instead there was just a mercenary with no direction in his place. Ocelot couldn’t of liked that his idol and the man who was to carry his mother’s legacy had suddenly let it all go. We know both Zero and Sigint were involved in Peace Walker, we don’t know how Ocelot was involved, or even if he was involved. But we do know Ocelot had a long history of secret units (like his own unit in Snake Eater) and we know XOF is a secretive arm of the Patriots and formally part of FOX. We also know they, and Skullface, were not present in Costa Rica. It is my belief that Skullface was enacting his plan to take out Zero during this time and that Ocelot is the one who informed him about Paz (who played a role Ocelot would usually play) and that she knew where Zero was. Ocelot would even promise to deliver Paz and, by extension, Zero to Skullface. For a price.
Big Boss needed to lose MSF, he needed to regain purpose and he needed to become the legendary Naked Snake again, as opposed to some vagabond gun for hire. Ocelot approached Huey, acting as an inspection agency. This ensured he could keep Big Boss off of the base during the attack. Things got out of hand when Big Boss arrived back at base though, ending with the crash that wasn’t supposed to transpire. Skullface wasn’t supposed to try and kill Big Boss via Paz either. Neither of these events factored into Ocelot’s plan.
Ocelot needed Miller out of the picture, however after the botched destruction of Mother Base he couldn’t just have him killed because he would still hold use in the future. That’s why they were separated at the hospital. Ocelot had a golden opportunity to reshape John into the man he should have been. Having Miller around could have ruined the process. Through tapes, hypnotic suggestion, prolonged exposure to ideas in a controlled environment and through Ocelot’s usual methods of drugging and electrotherapy he breaks Big Boss down to the basics, to a canvas he can reshape into the legend he believes Big Boss should be. He kills off the identity of “John” by creating the narrative that he is a separate person.
Miller would be a problem here because he would remind Big Boss of their dream. He could deconstruct Ocelot’s brainwashing of Big Boss. So Ocelot has Miller captured and tortures him severely. We know from MGS and MGS2 that Ocelot was a notorious torturer within the Soviet forces in Afghanistan in the 80s. We know that’s where he got the handle “Shalashaska” and we know he was notorious in the region. We also know the Soviets, with the assistance of the Skulls (a Cipher unit) captured Miller, put a bag over his head, limited his vision with sensual deprivation and then he was tortured for no clear reason. His arm and leg were removed, he was likely reminded constantly about the people who died, who he let down. Ocelot needed to break Miller, to turn him insane. Miller would serve as motivation for the newly revamped Big Boss and would also be key in helping drum up troops to follow the legend once more. Money no longer mattered, revenge did. Miller was so broken and vengeful that he had no inclination to look at what was going on. He never even questioned what Ocelot was doing on Mother Base or how he had gained so much influence over operations there. He didn’t question why Ocelot’s KGB unit were on the base with them.
Ocelot, for his part, did not want to trigger Big Boss’s memory either. So he behaved completely out of character. He acted like a subordinate to a man he basically had to spoon feed. He spent very little time with the rest of Mother Base’s management team, he took it upon himself to DNA test Eli despite MB having a state of the art medical wing. Ocelot couldn’t risk having “Venom” realise he was the real Big Boss because it would possibly trigger a return to his 1975 outlook.
Ocelot is only ever seen behaving like himself away from Big Boss. In front of him he’s this yes man with little personality. He still held Big Boss’s hand and led him down certain paths. The head trauma Big Boss suffered left him in an already damaged and incoherent state so it wasn’t hard for Ocelot to take control from the background.
For the lie to be complete Ocelot decides to trigger Big Boss’s belief he isn’t the original. After the breakdown over Paz it became clear to Ocelot that he needed to advance the illusion to cement the idea. As far as ‘Venom’ and Miller needed to know, the man who gave up on the Boss was gone, he was off somewhere starting some fruitless adventure as a complete nobody. But he’d left a message for ‘Venom’. “You’re Big Boss, he is the both of us together”. He was no longer Big Boss, rather, Big Boss was no longer John. Big Boss was a story that would unite the world. The way Ocelot believed his mother had wanted. An icon to unify under that didn’t have a nation, a religion, an economic or sociological model. A man who would fight for what he believed in whilst risking his life for others. Not some money driven war criminal, but a hero. Not an enemy of the times like the Big Boss of 1975, but an icon of the times, like the Big Boss who stopped Nuclear annihilation time and again in the 60s and early 70s. Ocelot could never be the man to carry out his mother’s will in the public eye, he was too far gone by the time he understood. But Big Boss could be that person.
We know there was no limit to how far Ocelot would go to see the Boss’s vision realised. Between him and Solid Snake it finally was. Big Boss at the end of everything had regained himself, and probably held onto a bit of his mental doppelganger too. As he made peace with his clone at the end of his life he realised why Ocelot had acted the way he did, and how when his Venom Snake plan fell through Ocelot had decided to put himself through the same ordeal. Ocelot really did carry out the Boss’s will, at the sacrifice of his own name, image, legacy and life. Just like his mother before him.

The real Big Boss was your radio contact for about 2/3 of the original Metal Gear.
However, in the last 1/3, when Big Boss suddenly seems strange and starts giving you "hints" that will get Solid Snake killed, you're talking to Venom (like going through a door that leads immediately to a pit trap, and so on).
The final boss of Metal Gear is, of course, Venom himself.

The biggest clues for me were when Big Boss says "You're talking to yourself." and when he and Snake were hiding under the hospital beds. There's a weird shift of perspective for a few seconds that makes it look like we're Big Boss. When rescuing Kaz, he didn't recognize Big Boss' voice when Snake spoke, probably thought that his captors were gonna kill him, only when he takes the sack(?) off does he recognize "Big Boss".
I knew it because I didn't remember Big Boss having a fucking shrapnel in his head and a artificial arm in MGS4. Besides, all those face changing cut-scenes at the beginning seemed confusing and didn't add up. I mean, I chose a new face for him and yet when the doctor revealed "his new face" it was still Big Boss'

Made it sound like he was some experiment, so I assumed clone or cyborg AI or something.

I missed out on MGS4 but am fan enough that I knew Kojima was telling me I wasn't playing the real big boss....then later on in Phantom Limbs I couldn't understand Russian...I STOPPED playing right there and FOUGHT With myself not to look online for spoiler info.....I decided to keep myself in the dark until I reached the end....Fucking Kojima, I was RIGHT....felt good to be right...felt bad that I was given just this as an ending to a spectacular series...Fuck me....depressing.
I hate to say that but Kojima wanted to replace Hayter since MGS3, so the voice change has no meaning whatsoever.

I'd argue that Huey doesn't recognize Snake because he thought he was dead and its been nearly a decade since he'd seen boss. Kaz doesn't recognize you because his eyes are fucked up. you can also say "kept you waiting huh" later in the mission its just a hidden button prompt.
remember The medic was psychologically conditioned into believing he was Big Boss, so in theory there aren't going to be behavior changes until after Venom learns "The Truth"
the only person who knows Venom snake isn't big boss is, the real Big Boss and Kaz, because Ocelot conditions himself into believing Venom is Big Boss after telling Kaz about the real Big Boss's plan. Kaz agreed to keep the secret because he wanted to make Venom and Big Bosses Sons strong enough to overthrow Big boss as revenge for abandoning him to build Outer heaven.

the 3 main giveaways for me when I first played was:
Ahab and Ishmael sound the same
Everything you can do Ishmael also could
Ishmael was more talkative than Ahab

Just replayed the intro and when your escaping the hospital Ishmael says “your pretty good” when you first get your gun

It's meant to be this way. Okay, so revenge can be akin to "venom" as its, at a spiritual or mythical (I'm tryna think of a specific word but cant think of it, so that's the closest I'm gonna get to it) meaning, it will course through your body and that's all your about. Happened to Kaz as well. Their weapon was revenge. They became revenge. And revenge is a venom. Hence Venom Snake. Now, The punished part was cus not only was his body punished, but who he was was punished. He was the leader of MSF, he made it into the huge power that frightened other powers. He owned a nuke. And he was punished for it.
How about the fact that you hear Big Boss's voice coming from "Ahab" from the very beginning. That set off a major red flag from the get go. Yet no one ever mentions it . Lol
