So you are assuming that everyone who watches this guide has min maxed builds on 4 characters. If you actually want to beat this fight normally, on your first honor mode or second total playthrough without looking up perfect builds, you should understand the base mechanics: - First attacker every turn will get lighting aoe'd down. Its a wisdom saving throw, so for example a monk will save against it most of the time. Make sure you have lightning resistance on that attacker, and make sure you stand far away from everyone else. - The adds make you wet so you get destroyed by the lightninig phase if you dont kill them first. - Lightning Phase: When the boss activates his lightning charge, you need to get all chars close to a crystal and break one to get the +lightning resistance buff from them. Afterwards it will start to rain, so you will die pretty quickly from here. - Make sure all your characters are spread before the boss has it's turn as he will prioritize targets close together, and aoe them down.
Just barely beat him today on my lonewolf run. At one point i was 3 hp from deleting an 80 hour playthrough. Bursting him is the way to go but i didnt have nearly enough on my only character. I found it helpful to stick close to the room with the helm of Balduran to remove wet condition once it starts storming. Bring lightning resist item if you have it but even then if you get wet it overrides lightning resistance. Hardest boss by a mile so far but i still have Gortash and big brain left to go
Blimey that is impressive! Well done on beating him solo, that must've been scary. I've just uploaded a video of how you could solo Gortash, depending on your build. Good luck getting those dice, if you haven't already.
@nicksjuice699 depends who you ask.. it might mean different things to different people. But for me, it was a true solo run (no party frames, companions hiding)
@neekBG3 you pronounce it "impressive", I pronounce it "Nyrulna". 😅 Just beat Big Brain today on last turn with Orpheus bonus action (literally the last button I could click b4 wipe)... I will never do a lonewolf run again.... 😅 Act 1 and most of Act 2 were fun when I only had 30-40 hours committed, but it became too stressful the more I progressed.
Didnt expect to have the hardest boss fight in an unseeming location (only did early act 3 yet). First time playing a DnD game and im getting my ass kicked by this shit dragon
Funny thing is, I keep pouring over every detail of these fights in fear of losing my honor mode run only to ace the boss in a turn or two without my team receiving any damage. Who knew? Special thanks to the guy who made this video: th-cam.com/video/G_ShgMOS7zg/w-d-xo.html . Cephalopocalypse is his name. This team he lines out is a power house. Nothing tricky, if used right will give you no problems. Put Gale right in the mix to tanking damage (abjuration wizard mainly), Lae'zel to throw from a distance, Shadowheart to be light domain cleric and finally your swordsbard. Everyone but Shadowheart and i think Lae'zell multiclass for a level or two. Easy to build, easy to murder everything will. My tips for more endgame terrifying bosses (SPOILERS): get everyone you can to embrace the illithid ways to learn the move "Mind Sanctuary" creating haste bubble in a pretty wide area for your party, have Gale or someone with a scroll use Globe of Invulnerability and then rain death on your enemies while your whole party is hasted for three turns without consequence at the end while theyre also surrounded by the glove of invulnerability. Hope it helps for anyone still scared. I beat Ansur in my first turn. Same with the steelwatch titan and almost killed two out of three of the steel watcher that were along with him. The only fight where I almost died was in the news paper building lol a bunch of flaming fists can see through walls apparently and came in to help out the people in there. I didnt prepare cause i didnt think it would be a big deal. Thought i was going to have to use Shadowhearts divine, one time spell to save our asses lol. Goodluck soldier. I think i'm going to beat mine today. Right now going after Gortash, then Orin, then Netherbrain. Only big thing I skipped was Callidor or whatever the Vampires name is since I didn't use astarion this time. First time doing the iron throne! Was totally awesome. TIP: DON'T EVER use a Speed Elixir AND your Mind Sanctuary skill. It bugs out, at least in my game, and removes haste and gives you lethargic as soon as you enter the mind sanctuary. Also, I found if you have the Free Cast illithid power, after you use it, switch to a different amulet and it should refresh. Maybe they're just my playthroughs but whatever. Good luck again lol gonna go try to beat it.
I set up a massive bit of barrel-mancy and blow this thing up in one round. I thought the initial explosion would do it, but it reduced it to 1 HP with a sudden burst of 100 temp HP, but that did not save it. In the end, the dragon got no attacks and it was over.
Thanks Seb! Hoping they will take me to those gold dice, then I can follow in your solo style steps. Hopefully not having any mishaps along the way :')
The only thing that would like to change is the fact that we can redirect him outside of the room that way, devs could change his behavior to just making him walk around instead...
I am not a fan of this fight, mainly because you have to activate him to fight. Him walking around would make it a lot easier, but I understand it would be odd for an undead dragon to be walking around deep underground without it being too videogamey.
@@neekBG3 sorry, I was commenting your video showing how to defeat gortash pushing him from the top of the castle.. somehow youtube changed the video and I commented on this one
May I add to buff your party members at camp after ever long rest with: Level 6 Aid, heros feast, longstrider, freedum of movement, and mage amour. Do it even on your summons as well . It makes everyone have over 100 HP. Air Mrydions can tern, invisble and stun. So its great to use to get make the emenies suprised, stun and silence them.
I will definitely do this and/or warding bond camp clerics. Him and Raphael are the last things to do before the epilogue and I lost dozens of time against Ansur. Easily hardest boss in the game for me
Holy shit I've been using the wrong Myrmidons!! Surprised AND stunned?! That's Wild! So glad I found this before finishing my first honour mode run. Used this exact camp setup and 3 water Myrmidons for Raphael, but still have loads left in act 3 and this will be a godsend! Thanks for sharing
You can also use things like the resonance stone, amulet of branding instead of Bhaalist armor. Becoming an Unholy assassin makes Jahaira and Minsc leave
Ooh I didn't realise that. I think I must have killed him before they joined, as they're sitting nicely in my camp. Minsc has a few less clothes on that I remember though...for some reason. Does the amulet of branding cost an action to use?
Partial rests and character level ups reset the vendors inventories. Respec a companion, trade, level up to level 2, trade, go to level 3, etc etc. Rinse and repeat
haha I kinda agree but I think I'll welcome the challenge when I'm not on a 130+ hour honour mode run. No way I'm risking losing that much time so bursting it is!
@user-by1df Reasonable. I beat it without a lot of setup. I just had some solid builds. Highly recommend a swords bard tav. Tons of utility and can absolutely evicerate anything that breathes.
yep, having the same moment rn. Near the end of first honor mode run and main character CC sorlock just kills everything. Raphael in 2 turns (would've been one, if yungir didn't stole my shared initiative, splitting the party in two. CC works for one turn on Raph, so i couldn't use hold monster + strongest melee in one turn). Cazador in 1 turn. Viconia and her guys - 2 turns, 0 damage. I won't make artificial difficulty for myself in this playthrough, but if I ever do the next, it would definetely be solo tactician (I am too scared to start fights in 4 party honor mode with OP party, I will not handle solo honor mode whatsoever)
I don't see what's the fun in using all these before the fights, making them brain dread. Its like exploiting the game and removing all difficulty. Meta gaming. Boring.
One or two scrolls of Dome of Invulnerability makes this fight pretty easy, at least that's how I did it
Those scrolls are a godsend 🙏
whwre do i get them
@@myst0ne what I did was at the lorroakan's store, I would rob some off the spectral image thingy that runs the store at least once every long rest
I managed to beat him using sleeping ward when he does his aoe and run out of the arena. Now Raphael im having a hard time with.
just lost my run to this guy last night (he had 15hp left) with probably 4 scrolls of invuln in my inventory... went in WAY too cocky lmao

Adding on to this list of buffs. Turn unused companions into transmuter wizards and then give the team transmuter stones for lightning resist.

why the dragon slaying arrows instead of undead?
They work at Ansur because he is a dragon. Which isn't clear from his examine info describing him as undead.
