Gu Manzhen is a daughter from a humble family, living in poverty and orphaned at a young age. Her entire family relies on her sister, Gu Manlu, who works as a dancer to support them. After graduating from university, Gu Manzhen finds a job in a company where she coincidentally meets Shen Shijun, a privileged young man. They develop feelings for each other and fall in love. Shen Shijun deeply sympathizes with Gu Manzhen's difficult circumstances and decides to marry her.
However, conflicts arise between them, and Shen Shijun returns to Nanjing urgently due to his father's illness. Meanwhile, Gu Manzhen falls into a cruel trap set by her sister, Gu Manlu, and her husband, Zhu Hongcai, as they try to keep him away from her. She is raped by Zhu Hongcai and subsequently confined in Gu Manlu's house until she gives birth to a child.
During this time, Shen Shijun finds Gu Manlu and is told by her that Gu Manzhen has already married someone else. Heartbroken, Shen Shijun leaves Shanghai in despair.
One year later, with the help of kind-hearted Lin Sheng and Jin Fang, Gu Manzhen escapes from the hospital and regains her freedom. However, a series of setbacks plunges her into the depths of despair, altering the course of her life. She learns from Xu Shuhui that Shen Shijun has married Shi Cuizhi, which devastates her. After her sister Gu Manlu's death, her son Rongbao suffers abuse from their maid. Gu Manzhen decides to marry Zhu Hongcai. Later, she divorces Zhu Hongcai and fights for custody of her child.
Several years later, Xu Shuhui returns to the country, and with his help, Gu Manzhen finally reunites with Shen Shijun. Fourteen years have passed, and Shen Shijun and Gu Manzhen have their own lives now. As Gu Manzhen says, they can't go back to what they had before.
