When I was a kid (9/10) we had an old table in the spare room, it was pushed into a corner and was half covered in cassette tapes, an old stereo and other junk, so there was only half a table (4 pockets free) and 2 free sides to walk around. When I was bored I would go in and mess about, after a few months I fell in love with the game and with my limited playing surface straight and angled pots to the corner was not challenging anymore so I started practising corner and middle pocket doubles all day long (uk banks) its a shot I have always loved and never feared. 33 years later now and it is interesting to have my own shot theories confirmed here and even learn terminology (collision induced spin)........when I used to try and explain it to my friends and family it was difficult to put in words so the only spin I got was their eyes rolling as they yawned at me. Great video from a true great, hope to see you back in Mosconi action soon
This is fantastic! I've never understood why I keep missing this type of shot, even after diligently studying other videos on banking. Simply applying cue ball side spin to offset the induced spin on the object ball now seems so obvious. I also highly recommend Neils's other lessons. His one on how to pocket balls like a professional immediately improved my long potting near the rail to near 100% success.
I always applied some light spin when banking because I would make them way more often, but I never knew why it worked. I always thought I just couldn't aim bank shots. Thank you Niels!!!

ALL SHOTS should have some outside cue ball spin to avoid "sticking together" and "throwing" off the shot. Forgot actual terms but think it is called throw and dead ball hit. Anyway, when you change the angles and speed, cue ball spin needs to change too. Its all in the practice, practice and more practice.
Nice explanation that makes it so much easier to understand. I had been told to cut it more for off angle, but this is not consistent. Your way much better.

Thanks!! Yes gotta mention where the info actually comes from and he had that great term for it 😄👍🏼 still wanna come to red shoes one day!! To work on my banks more
If I may add, the speed in which you hit the bank is very important as well. The harder the object ball hits the rail, the more it compresses that rail upon impact. More compression will shorten the angle of the bank shot. The opposite is also true. A very slow speed will compress the rail less and will widen the bank angle. You'll notice that Mr. Feijen hit most of his banks here at a similar speed to consistently compress the rail the same way each shot, simplifying aiming.

Great video but I have two questions. 1) When you say “a little bit of spin” how much do you mean? An 1/8 tip, a 1/4 tip? 2) Does the amount of spin you put on the cue ball depend on the cut angle and/or distance from the pocket? If so, how much do you make that adjustment? Great work on all your videos!
Thanks for the advice. Definitely gonna work on this shot. I am a decent banker and have wondered why I ha e missed these shots. Now I know why it only worked when I needed position to that side and it worked.
Neils, also when cutting across that cross side, you can aim the same and shoot the ball at a slightly slower speed and it will open up toward the center of the pocket too!
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen I love watching your videos and learn a great deal. I think it would be great if you included those occasional misses in your videos though. I understand they're short instructional videos, but it's good mentally for amateurs to see the pros miss challenging shots occasionally.
Wow, after watching lots youtube vidoes, I've never heard of collision induced spin until now. When most coaches talk about the bank shots missing short, they usually just say it's due to the object ball compressing the cushion as it rebounds, e.g. due to the power. I thought the reason I was missing wide cut bank shots was cause of throw, but it makes a lot more sense now that it's due to spin off the cushion.
Depending on position for the next ball I like over aiming the back and use inside to straighten it back out. Either way works but our masters where your next ball is to determine what way you take the shot
Good instruction, although I feel dumb, because I figured that the spin thing was happening, but just tried to compensate for that by where I hit the ball instead of thinking to compensate it by adding spin to the cue ball. Doh!
This helped my banking tremendously!! I used it several times when play on my league night. I have learned so much from your videos, thanks for the videos, please keep up the great work. Its nice that a pro of your caliber would share all these tips.
Great video Niels. I enjoyed. But how do you compensate if for example a certain positional play sort of forces you to play with a different amount of spin? How do you know how much to compensate your aim?
I have the same problem with bank shots, so I avoid them like the plague. Pun intended. 😂 I need to watch the video you mentioned at the beginning, but the concept you described here may actually help me. Thanks for the hard work.
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen Spent about 90 minutes last night working on banks. The first hour was ball in hand natural angle banks. Moved into the advanced tip for the last 30 minutes. This really helped. Going to continue tonight, and video is so I can watch it later. Thank you again. Good luck this weekend!! Shoot well!!
Hello sir! I'm really impressed by these useful drills. Hope to see you explaining about CTE aiming system and how to quanify the aiming spot between 15-30 and 30-45. That kind of angle makes me headache. Thank you!
Nice Niels. Good to see your still shooting strong. I might also add to your viewers the speed of the shot factors into how much collision induced throw you get as well. Faster speed will transfer less spin and throw as well. But faster speeds will shorten the bank somewhat because of the pushing deeper into the cushion. Its all about that Feel. cheers.
Hi Tim! Yes good points! I’ll probably do another bank video in the near future with more advanced tips like those 😄 How is your own training during COVID times? Anything you’re struggling with?
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen consistency lol. Maybe I should start doing more drills. Those solo practices you do and keep doing till you finish are impressive. I think more time is needed than I have to get where I would like to be. I have a regular job. Kid. Hobbies lol.
Yep prioritizing is huge these days cause we are all so busy, all of us. Did you see the goal setting course at terminator-college.com ? That can help you out a ton with setting good goals for yourself and your practice 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Another BIG tip: (not really sure but) When I shoot bank shots with a lot of speed, it requires me to aim at a different spot on the rail compared to when I shoot them slower. The speed either has an effect on the contact spin, or maybe, the speed affects how much friction occurs when the ball makes contact with the rail, causing it to go off course. I am not sure which one is correct, but I always adjust my aim when I shoot bank shots faster or slower, and, before watching this video I did not think about the spin that happens when the cue ball makes contact with the object ball when shooting bank shots. If someone can confirm my theory about more friction occurring when the object ball hits the rail at a faster speed, that would be great.
I've actually designed a whole aiming system around this concept. In my new cross corner video I actually get into mathematical detail of how wide this speed window is from all over the table. The effect you're calling friction I discussing my five levels of speed video. Fast speed is shortening the angle with real compression and slow speed is actually producing a gentle Masse effect as the top spin transfers to a slight side spin which opens the rebound angle.
Great video! The same result can be achieved, with over cutting the ball a little bit, instead of using outside spin? Also Eddie Taylor suggested, that most bank shoots should be over cut firm with inside spin to stiff the angle, whats your opinion on that?
Hey Terminator! You are giving me the secret sauce to viscerate people on the pool table. I put your technique to use right away cause i got a pool table at my place, and voila!I am making bank shots after bank shots like nothing. How do u compensate for collision induce throw on non bank shots like cut shots? Thanks again. I automatically subscribe after the first video I saw.
Thanks Jean! On cut shots there's still a bit of throw like a cross over one pocket bank. In that case you can over cut it a hair and let the friction bring it back into line :)
So when the bank is not natural, like way past the natural bank shot. Then essentially you could use spin on the opposite side of the cue ball to help it come back a little to go in?
This video is a great continuation to the previous one you posted on straight in bank shots. Here you use side spin to compensate for collision induced spin. Does the bottom/top spin on the cueball also transfer to the object ball and influence the rebound of the bank or it is a minor issue?
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen Thank you for the answer. It is an unbelievable opportunity that I can ask famous Niels Feijen about pool. Your youtube channel is unique!
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen When it comes to 8 ball, I quite often run out of position and struggle with controlling the speed of the cueball. I have already watched your last video on 3 main mistakes, guilty in commiting all three of them)
That depends, on the distance that the object ball is from the cushion that it is being banked off of. If the OB is on, or very near, the cushion, then any top or bottom spin that is transferred to it by the CB has little time to effect the angle. However, if the OB is further from the cushion, then top spin on the CB will transfer slight bottom spin to the OB, causing the OB effectively to be sliding into the cushion, rather than to be rolling, and thereby it will shorten, or narrow, the rebound angle slightly. Because, if the OB is some distance from the cushion, then it will have time for that transferred spin from the CB to effect the OB's roll. And, by using draw on the CB, it will then transfer top to the OB, and causing more of a naturally rolling OB. Where as, a naturally rolling OB will cause the angle to widen off the cushion, somewhat, as opposed to how a stationary or a sliding OB would. The effect is normally slight, however, and any amount of side spin, ( English) on the CB, or any difference in the speed of the hit, will have a more dramatic effect on the angle of the bank shot, than would any effect that follow or draw will have. But, the effect may still be enough to cause a missed bank shot, so it should be calculated in the aiming process, especially when the OB being banked is more than a few inches from the cushion.
Looks like you are hitting cue ball right side but looks like it's rotating left im confused but I understand once cue ball makes contact the object ball will spin right
Sure but you missed an important fact. when the ball is close to the pocket...particularly less than 4" or more when on a faster low friction cloth. The ball is sliding not spining. Thats why you need to induce a runing rail english. Away from the bank the cloth will cause it to roll into the rail In that case the exit angle is not affected as before described. So the momentum is lost when the rail causesa spin. Scenario number two the rollin momentum slightly changes direction.
3:20-3:35... hitting right is the opposite of what you say that you are doing...hit right spin makes the angle wider because of the gear effect.. hitting the same side as you are going neutralizes the spin and cancels it..so if your banking to your left you hit left....he even said it himself you hit to the same side...but proceeded to do the total opposite... either he just made a simple mistake or I have been shooting the ball wrong my entire life Which is certainly possible
Hello. Will it work by go thinner on the objektball, instead of using side spin? Or will it just give it more spin to the objekt ball by going thinner? -sorry about my english, i still hope you understand and give me en answer. 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰

This really helped. Going to continue tonight, and video is so I can watch it later. Thank you again. Good luck this weekend!! Shoot well!!
omg, it is unbelievable how good the top pros are! There is no way I can be this good, not even if I played 8 hours a day.
Great advice
Thanks John!!😄😄
Hello sir! I'm really impressed by these useful drills. Hope to see you explaining about CTE aiming system and how to quanify the aiming spot between 15-30 and 30-45. That kind of angle makes me headache. Thank you!
Thank you! I will do aiming very soon! Stay tuned 😄😄
Very helpful, thank you
Super to hear!! Thank you for watching pal. Glad you like the video 💪😎
Now i realize why my banking was inconsistent. You have a video of getting position for your next shot after a bank?
hmm not yet but that's a good tip!😀
I’ll probably do another bank video in the near future with more advanced tips like those 😄
How is your own training during COVID times? Anything you’re struggling with?
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen consistency lol. Maybe I should start doing more drills. Those solo practices you do and keep doing till you finish are impressive. I think more time is needed than I have to get where I would like to be. I have a regular job. Kid. Hobbies lol.
Yep prioritizing is huge these days cause we are all so busy, all of us. Did you see the goal setting course at terminator-college.com ? That can help you out a ton with setting good goals for yourself and your practice 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Free course so all bonus 😄🔥💪🏼
Excelente gracias
Very nice Teminator ! Tysm for the clip :D
Thanks Vu! Appreciate it :)
So as a newer player. Is a little bit of spin half a cue tip? 1 cue tip? Etc? Also, I still need to then adjust for the added English or no?
Yup! Learned this decades ago from an old master.
Awesome!👍🏼😄
The demonstration is outstanding! Love the soundtrack as well
Thanks, make the music myself!

Great tips!
I don’t think it’s the friction but the rails. Same on a kick shot. Hit it hard and it comes out shorter. Hit it soft and and comes wider 👍🏼👍🏼😄
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen Awesome, thanks.
You got it!
You are so correct, what a smart man.
Street smart 😜👍🏼😄
Thanks!!
Hello my friend. I have question about how much spin like quarter tip half tip one tip .Please let me know
1-2 tips. It’s not written in stone. Just a bit of spin not a super lot👍🏼👍🏼
Great video! The same result can be achieved, with over cutting the ball a little bit, instead of using outside spin?
Also Eddie Taylor suggested, that most bank shoots should be over cut firm with inside spin to stiff the angle, whats your opinion on that?
Yes both of those principles can be effective however the inside spin is very deflection sensitive in my humble opinion
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen Thank you very much for the information. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, Niels, for all of your videos. My game is definitely better for the Terminator Tips!
Any multi-rail tips?
Tnx Norman!! Will do kicking series soon with also multi rails🙏🏻😄
Wowww just simply amazing. I really learned a lot from this legend 💪🏻🎱
Tnx Martin! Appreciate it 👍🏼👍🏼🙏🏻
So when the bank is not natural, like way past the natural bank shot. Then essentially you could use spin on the opposite side of the cue ball to help it come back a little to go in?
Same side spin as the side you got the object ball. Helping English 😄👍🏼
Niels how do you post the video without being blocked and I dont see what is the music what is the name of the track ?
For this piece of a track I threw together a few loops 😄 I actually do it in 10 min because I’ve made so many full tracks 😄👍🏼🔥🎹😎
learned something today thank you
This video is a great continuation to the previous one you posted on straight in bank shots. Here you use side spin to compensate for collision induced spin. Does the bottom/top spin on the cueball also transfer to the object ball and influence the rebound of the bank or it is a minor issue?
Thanks! Not a lot. But speed makes a bigger difference. Soft hit then they come wide, harder hit and they come shorter.
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen Thank you for the answer. It is an unbelievable opportunity that I can ask famous Niels Feijen about pool. Your youtube channel is unique!
Thanks a lot! Is there anything else you’re struggling with in your game?
Much appreciated. You’re pretty good at this game lol😂😂
Hitting on the right makes the angle shorter so adding some right spin makes it come back on a natural
Neutral path 😄👍🏼
banking with the beard is a great book!
Yes good info! 😄👍🏼
excellent!
Thanks Marty!
Excellent lesson!
Hello.
Will it work by go thinner on the objektball, instead of using side spin?
Or will it just give it more spin to the objekt ball by going thinner?
-sorry about my english, i still hope you understand and give me en answer.
🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
Yes thinner and no spin also gets the job done but for position it’s better to use the system with a bit of spin 👍🏼👍🏼😄
@@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen thanks alot for your answer 😇😄
