OUTSTANDINGLY professional fix!!! i am beyond impressed and thrilled to try this on ALL of my broken umbrellas!! the way you used an anvil, copper pipe & hammer to shape the round pipe to match the broken rectangular wooden rib BLEW MY MIND!! i am usually too impatient to make such professional looking repairs, but your well thought out fix is actually “penny wise pound BRILLIANT!!” kudos and enormous gratitude!!! seriously thank you so much!!!
Thanks so much: your video helped. My patio umbrella is fixed. Rivets posed a problem, so I used bolts, washers and nuts instead. All great now!!! Thanks again.
Excellent! Thank you for letting me know and posting your solution. So glad its fixed and now you may have helped others who had the same rivet issue. Thank you!!
Its amazing. We have gone through like maybe 5 umbrellas in 3 years. Sad how cheap things are made these days. One could make a living assembling repair kits and videos of all the cheap crap being made nowadays.
Thanks for copper pipe idea. I had same break on 2 arms of my 115” umbrella and just fixed it! The only difference is I used 2 bolts on each side of break instead of rivets and it works like a charm!
Good stuff! I appreciate you commenting and leaving your experience. I think its very helpful for others trying to find ways to fix theirs. Thank you!!
hey b-rob...Yes! it worked with simply using screws...I did follow all of your instructions to the letter though and turned out FANTASTIC! Thanks & Happy 4th of July!
Thanks for a really good idea for repairing an umbrella. Ours is wooden, but your repair concept should work the same as long as I paint it when done. Thank you.
Did same repair on mine, I found that taking the material off made fixing it easy and only takes a minute to take of You need 3 holes in the pipe, instead of rivets, 3mm screw or bolt, 6 washers and 3 nuts. Insert bolt into middle hole the insert the broken spurs. push the broken spur (the one still attached to the the frame) in to thd pipe untill it hits middle screw, use a bit of tape and tape the pipe to the spur, do the same for other side You can then drill through the holes in the copper pipe and through the spur If you don't have rivets and a gun then screws will also work As a precaution I added 3in copper pipe with 1 hole in middle, to reinfoce that joint on each spur Drll out the rivet and replace rivets with nut and bolt Doesn't take to long to do this mod, and you'll never have to worry about it knowing that this fault will never happen again
Nice job ! Now, for anyone taking the California umbrellas UPPER HUB apart, DON'T put it on a table or workbench [like I did] you must work on this thing when it's vertical, otherwise the pins love to fall out. Before disassembling, remove your fabric cover, obviously. Important: A dab of wite-out on the top, round plastic cover [with the screws] and the hub to mark the original positions/alignment will be very helpful for when reassembling too. Then, I suggest putting something under this whole assembly, as the pins STILL love to fall out... suggest an old rug or bed sheet to find your dropped pins. When you remove the screws holding the top cover, keep in mind the hub will want to suddenly slide down. A piece of tape or a big tie wrap or better yet large rubber bands will help to temporarily hold it up in place. I then replaced my missing pin and reassembled the umbrella.
Ideally if you intend to undo the top or midlde hub it's easyer if you have someone to hold the umbrella while you work on it. On mine the top plastic cap unsrews, allowing removal of fabric, this is all done with the umbrella closed. You then have access to the top hub screws Very important, as mentioned don't lay it down to work on, make sure it's upright. what I did was use string (or gaffer tape) tie around all the spurs, this stopped the hub from moving down (still need to be cautious the pins don't come out), or get someone to hold it (this is the better option) As mentioned be careful that non of the pins come out, Fabric If fabric is dirty you can wash it since you have it Or you can buy new fabric if the old one is beyond saving Before taking fabric of the umbrella measure from the tip of one spure to the middle, also not number of spurs I found new replacement fabric on ebay
really good advice . I've been wondering how to fix my 2 that have the same problem . But what size are the bolts , washers , & rivets , or for those of us who don't know , how do I measure those to get the sizes I need ? Although yours looks like the exact size I have .
@@BrianRobinsonCoaching ty so much . I'm a pretty healthy 60 yr old female & am having to do these things myself without or with very little experience .

@@BrianRobinsonCoaching i fixed it, only needed a screw in the middle, the pipe fit so snug i didnt need to put any other screws thank you !!!!! wish i could post a pic
Too bad you didn't have a tripod I have an extra can I send it to you. I love that you didnt take umbrella apart like others I've seen but you didn't provide the video. I am serious about send you a free tripod. Diane
Thank you so much Diane for offering to send me a tripod!! I have bought a couple since filming this video 😄! You are very thoughtful and kind. Thank you!!
Sorry for the delayed response Daniel, yes they were the long (1/2 inch) I believe. As you probably know, you want them to be long enough to make it through the arm section.
The other way can’t be to crimp the copper pipe to snugly fit inside the break, epoxy it in place, and only redrill through it for the replacement pivot bolt… No paint touch up needed!
I believe so if you drill holes for the rivets. The copper should protect the wood just as well and the rivets would hold the copper to the wood...so...I think so. Please don't hold me liable if it doesn't work 🙄😳😉😄. Good question. I think I will look for a broken wood one to try it.

Late to the party, omg this is so helpful. I’ve tossed so many umbrellas because I couldn’t figure out how to repair. Thank you 🙏
You are so welcome. Glad this helped you!!
@@BrianRobinsonCoaching ordered the copper tube, that was the missing link for me, thank you SO much
This is outstanding B-Rob. My wife liked the “my wife is going to be so impressed” line 🤣
Here’s my project today …
😄 Thank you! How did it turn out for you?
Thanks so much Brian...I would have never of figured this out for myself !!!
You've inspired my weekend project. Just helplessly watched my umbrella tip over in the wind and land solidly on one of the arms.
I hope this helps you with your project! You can do it! I know the heartache of watching it blow over. Let me know how it turns out!
I have a less expensive umbrella. With only two sections. This is kind of what I thought I could do. Thank you.!

I'm wondering if one could skip the rivet gun / rivets and simply use three screws / washers with the copper pipe (?) Thanks!
That may be a possibility. Let me know if that works.

thisisb-rob one question what did you use to cut the “old screws” off the pice that attaches to the copper?
Good stuff. Next video needs to be how to make some legendary B-Rob smoked ribs.
Slide a cardboard pizza box top up between the fabric and the rib repair for a mask and dust it in with the right spray paint color and you’re golden
Thanks. This was the first video I saw and it worked
Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment and tell me!

I've got a cantilever banana parasol and the rib snapped at the same place as yours. I wondering it it will work with mine
Did you try this fix on yours?

Hi im fixing my umbrella arm right now, do i have to have a bolt for the middle hole or can i use rivets like the other 2 holes
Hi Darlyn, that may work if you can find one long enough. I think I realized that a bolt was better. Did you finish it? If so, which did you use?

What was used to cut the old pieces off the pole that joins with the broken pole?
Good question, I used some small bolt cutters that look like pliers (not the gigantic thing that cuts locks).
A storm just did the same damage to the same umbrella model. Let's see how it goes.
Wow. Did you try fix it yet? I'd like to know how it turned out. Thanks for commenting!
