- Homemade Wooden Roller Printing Press by Jamie Poole - 'The Charlie Dickens Printing Press'
After spending quite a while planning and making my own printing press I made the first successful print.
The press is made from a 4 cm thick beech worktop. The 10cm beech rollers were made by a carpenter on Etsy. For the printing bed, I used solid oak and made a couple of runners too.
The felt blanket came from Lawrence Printmaker Supplies in Hove. I found that the roller occasionally slipped on the felt so got some anti-slip mats which worked brilliantly.
Pressure is applied using wood and card spacers above the top roller. So I think I could try an etching at some point too.
I took inspiration from a video I saw of an 18th-century roller press film by Roger Gaskell. I am now hoping to make lots of prints using this press in the future.
If you have a go at making a press too I would love to hear from you!
I have published a downloadable PDF with more details about how I made this printing press which can be purchased from my website here:

What controls the pressure on the roller and thus the clearance from the material which is being fed through ?
At the side of the press there is a space where I add cardboard or wooden tabs. That applies more pressure. Also I add packing or paper on the platen which adds further pressure.
That is beautiful press there what did you make the press negative out of the plate that you ink with the design on it
Thankyou. It's grey lino I made the plate from. A soft Linoleum.
Do you happen to have a tutorial of some kind on channel? I would love to have a crack at making one myself
Hi there, I don't currently have any tutorials on this at the moment. But I am happy to answer questions and send you the drawings I made for it too.
