    Rob,, I noted that you have progressed to being able to weld with the full length of rod, single-handed😊 it's difficult to steadily control the arc at the tip of a long wobbly rod but you've gained skill with practice.

    The profit markup on things these days is atrocious really. It goes to show the greed that this world revolves around. It's great to see people like you rehabilitating others to share freely with others so that they won't have to be stuck in the money wheel we revolve around.

    • @scotttovey
      @scotttovey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are making a false judgment out of ignorance.
      The mark up may seem exorbitant, but you don't know what the actual manufacturing cost is.
      Rob was able to build it for the cost of his time, but Rob did not tell us how long it actually took him to build the thing.
      In addition, we do not know how long it took to manufacture all the parts for the press.
      We do not know what the pay is for the employees that manufacture those presses.
      We do not know what the market will bear.
      The so called markup may be necessary because people won't buy the press at a lower price. Yeah, believe it or not; having too low of a price on a product can hinder you sales of said product, even when the product is the higher quality, and the manufacturer knows that their is no need for the higher price to stay in business.
      When you have a product that you can price at $20 but won't sell at $20, but will sell at $50; do you keep your price at $20 dollars and let your kids go hungry; or do you raise the price to $50 dollars and feed your family?
      The only thing you can do when the market does weird stuff like this is let the market have it's way and earn the extra profit. If you don't want the extra profit, then give it to a charity that actually does feed and cloth the poor in your country, or give your employees a raise.

    • @Earzone63
      @Earzone63 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scotttovey i really don't believe in the 'whatever the market will bear' mantra applied to all things irrespective of however essential they are to serving people's needs (food, housing, child care etc.) - but for more luxury items it's necessary to charge the people who can afford it because it's an equation of recycling capital to grow in the economy in relation to the value of of each working person's time - trading should be done to essentially lower the cost (but that cost is much lower for thrifty people like Rob and Dave who are willing to put their minds to work and invest their time for great results like this press :D

    • @nil5221
      @nil5221 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The other thing is volume of sales. It's not an item that everyone needs. For a manufacturer to actually have a business making these, maybe they would only sell a couple each month, and a few £k is not exorbitant to make it worthwhile to even produce it and cover overheads (supplies, factory, payroll & taxes, insurance, etc) that the backyarder doesn't have.

    Fantastic lateral thinking and DIY workaround on the rollers but are the "agricultural" tolerances good enough? The printing might require very accurate spacing to ensure proper, even pressure on the paper to transfer the image. Not that it would be a problem to take the conveyor roller to an Engineering workshop and have it trued up on a lathe to within a few thou. Still way cheaper than buying the press!

    • @bikerfirefarter7280
      @bikerfirefarter7280 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThinkingandTinkering angle-grinder, lol ;-)
      don't misunderstand me, i'm not criticising 'sparrow-poop' appearance, that'll improve as you go. grinding for appearance is way down the list of welding 'fit for purpose'. keep at it, but please do a short course with someone who will explain 'inclusions/penetration/compatibility/heat-zones/thermal-cracking/under-cutting (those last two can be a bitch)' because they can really bite your arse later/unexpectedly.
      once your welding skill/understanding kicks in you'll not need to grind anything. a good bit of single-pass welding is really satisfying.
      thanks for sharing.
      presently i'm interested in 'peltier effect' electrical generation, using/extracting heat stored in solar heated water tanks. do you have any insights or diy ideas? ta.

    Pretty sure it would cost a small fortune in the US to get the parts cut for you. Especially for a good job from a decent shop. Not to mention the price of the steel itself. But its cool. But you'd probably pay as much as to get a preassembled one here, unless you know a shop you can get a good deal with. Could be wrong, but I doubt it.

    • @ThinkingandTinkering
      @ThinkingandTinkering  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      might be worth asking rather than assuming mate?

    • @TrueSighted
      @TrueSighted 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThinkingandTinkering maybe, but to get an accurate assessment you need details. And I dont have a project in mind at the moment. I am however going from past experience. Most of the projects I've priced out, before the inflationary costs kicked in lately, would have cost just as much to get the shop time, as to just buy the projects already made. Can't Imagine its any cheaper now. Could be wrong, but.. there ya go.

  • @ThomasAndersonbsf

    I wonder if you have considered making an aluminum extruder system, as I think the most challenging bit to be made is your die to squeeze the cold pressed aluminum through, and maybe the thing needs to be a bit complex if you are doing what I am wanting to do, making T-slot like made by 80/20 even with out a center hole, lol but still seems like you are not far from it at this, XD

    • @ThinkingandTinkering
      @ThinkingandTinkering  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @bikerfirefarter7280
      @bikerfirefarter7280 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ooh, extruded aluminiyum. stupendous pressure needed for a cold press. the 'die' is only part of the problem. good luck with it, but be safe, those things can be lethal.
