This year if they had done it they wouldve made around $2000 profit if they did it right. Then invest it in something safe for the rest of the time and boom easy win

I think the optimal strategy would have been to just YOLO all the money into one stock and hope it explodes. Because if you invest in two stocks, you need both of them to go up pretty significantly, or you will get beaten by someone else who invested a better one.

Sure, that's a good idea over the long run, but if the goal is to make more money than the other groups over a short period of time, your best bet is to put all your money in one thing and just hope that the short-term fluctuations in stock prices goes your way. You might have lost badly doing things your way, but all it would have needed to succeed would be for your group to get lucky, whereas the other plan, which would minimize risk but probably limit short-term gains, would only have worked if every other group was unlucky and all chose under-performing stocks.
