    i played this in 1995.. i was a wee bit over 10 years old.. it was my first time having a computer and this game blew my mind away. BOOM! so much magic! i became an adventure game fan.. i spent many good hours playing with a close friend and we had exciting telephone calls just to tell each other we'd made some progress with the game! there was no walkthrough or even the internet for us back then.. Sierra was the Disney of computer games for us.. it was magical!

      Same here. I was 10, and had to call my friends dad many times to get through clues as he beat the game. The ending was magic, and I beat it several times just to hear the sing at the end. I haven't played it since spring 1995.

    That green "Sierra" logo at the beginning.....what a blast from the past. I received this game for Christmas in 1993 when I was 12. I was kind of bummed since I was not in to RPG's at all. I ended up playing it a bunch and really liking it. Pretty cool watching this.

      John A. He makes it look easy. The game's fun was from figuring out what to do next. This specific King's quest was considered the best not only because of the story and voice acting, but also its challenge.

      My mom and I played this together when I was a kid, and we got it down to a science of beating it in single sit-downs. The only thing of course is that we had made a map of the entire minotaur lair the first playthrough... sooo we did have a cheat-sheet. Them's were the days.
      I'd play through again just to play 'Dem Bones!

    I remember misplacing the instruction booklet for this game and pulling my hair out when I got to the Cliffs of Logic. You absolutely need the booklet to solve the puzzle. And this was before internet so there were no GameFAQs for help; just a 1-900 help line for a couple dollars a minute hahaha.
    Anyway, I did end up finding the booklet and made it all the way to the Catacombs, only to find out I was missing the Hole in the Wall!! So my whole save file was bricked, trapped with a minotaur for all eternity.

    Had this game as a kid and loved it. Never could beat it as I got it second hand and it lacked the manual needed to solve the riddle of the cliffs of logic. I come back about once a year to watch your playthrough just for nostalgic purposes. Thank you for making it, and for actually recording the story as opposed to skipping it! One humorous thing I noticed this playthrough though: At 2:30:39 when you first have Singsing deliver a message to Cassima, due to the fact you waited till later on in the game to do so, Shameer Shamazzle is still present watching as a snake in the tree despite the fact that you previously tricked him into believing you're dead and being ordered to stop following you around. Just a funny little continuity error the devs seemed to miss.

      You can also have Shamir show up as the weasel on the Isle of the Beast even after pretending to die ... just an oversight, like you said. I think it's still an awesome game and one of my all-time favorites. :)

    Nice game. I never played any other King's Quest game other than V. As much as I was into it, there were too many instances where I was completely unable to go any further cause of some very specific actions I had to take. That strategy guide (with the spoilers that were annoyingly covered in red) saved my ass though. There's no way I had a chance in that game without it. Ugh... that desert...
    Oh and... Cedric... enough said. >.>

    Friend of mine had this game on his PC back in the 90's. We got stuck at the area with the boiling spring. How in THE HELL were we supposed know to take the ice cabbage which (from my memory anyway) is on another island entirely and then hurry back to the spring (because y'know ice melts pretty quick) and THROW IT INTO THE SPRING?! Like that makes any sense LOOOL
    Anyway the voice acting in this game blew me the f*** away as soon as Alexander gets to that store on the first island and the story clerk starts talking to him. Just so good. I'll remember certain characters forever I think. :)
    The other part that stumped us for a good while was getting that sailor in the boat to give us the map to the other islands. I forget how we did that but I guess I'll find out soon enough watching this video.

      I couldn't find any info on it, but I'm certain that Benson also voiced the main character of Lunacy on the Dreamcast, Fred the Wandering Traveler. The tone of voice he uses with Alexander is exactly the same as with Fred, but I can't find a single source to confirm it.

    Something interesting I noticed. The snake in the tree with the nightingale has a shiny eye, like the genie, and all the people he pretended to be to attempt to lure Alexander to his death, so it can be assumed that the snake is also the genie in disguise. However, in this playthrough, you send the gifts to Cassima after faking your death (in both versions) so wouldn't it be illogical for the snake to be there? I suppose that they didn't consider you might make that progress afterward...

    • @alwilfrid
      @alwilfrid 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I found that when I played as well. Prehaps the only continuity error there was. Hard to thing of everything all the time. I was a little frustrated that after drinking the potion and then sending things to Cassima, via her nightingale, after that that the snake with the flashing eye turned up.

      It's games like this requiring so many floppy disks to install that the CD-ROM was starting to be accepted by the mainstream. The reason the 7th Guest and Myst were released only on CD-ROM is they would require far too many floppies to install and would be a major inconvenience.

    I am so confused. So, you decided to give Alexander’s ring to sing-sing later in the game which means you got the ribbon at 2:31:50 ... yet you were somehow able to get hair to use for the Charm A Creature Of The Night spell earlier in the game? I was letting this video play in the background so I didn’t get the details of how you got the hair. I guess I will rewatch.
    Edit: at 1:57:36 , a hair comes from Beauty’s clothes. I didn’t know there were two ways to get the hair ingredient.

    Back in 1995, I use to watch my older foster brother play KQ religiously. For me, it was an escape into an enchanted world filled with adventure and magic. This game was so captivating for us kids. We would all gather around the PC and watch the magic unfold on that old Dell computer. I can still hear the noise it generated. I guess KQ1 was the first adventure game me and my older brother played on a computer. Now, some 25 years later I chronologically watched all longplays on TH-cam and must say, that it was a great pleasure to see the whole yourney of Alexander. Sierra and Roberta Williams will probably stay in my mind for the rest of my life ;_)

    Playing this again as an adult I now find it weird that Alexander fell in love with a girl he barely spoke to in the 5th game. But since they (at least in the new continuity) ended up having Gwendolyn, it's cool, because Gwendolyn is funny.

      One little oversight - and probably the only one. They should have programmed the game so that the nightgale stopped appearing in the tree after Alexander drank the potion. They would have expected people to give the items to Cassima, via the nightingale, before Alexander 'brought back' Cassima's parents. I'm frustrated by that little error but it's hard to think of everything all the time.

  • @JuanitaPatrick
    @JuanitaPatrick 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sucks when you realize years later that a mother and her child died in Princess Cassima's castle. Dead mom made it to the Land of The Dead but her son was still stuck in the cell they died in.

    *Change to your story…..when Alexander gets back with her parents, he can give the items to the nightingale, he can also have one more convo with Jalloh in the library. Then go to the pawn shop to drink the bottle for the genie to see, then go see the guy about switching the lamp.

    First played this back in 1993 on a Windows 3.1 processor that had a CD-ROM drive. CD-ROM games were fairly new back then, but many of those games from that era of gaming were good. Kings Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow was probably one of the best ones.
    We've come a long way since then, but every time I look at this game I get nostalgic. Jane Jensen did such a terrific job on this game. All in all, it offered a mixture of adventure and love, something you don't really see anymore.

      cassima's parents are still trapped in limbo if alexander doesn't come to their rescue, and none of alexander's family is present at the wedding either. cassima never learns what actually happened to her parents, so there's no closure. overall it's a huge chunk of the storyline that's completely missing there and to me personally it feels just... wrong. cassima deserves better than that.

    1:53:10 The three OST songs for the Beauty and Beauty storyline alone are underrated, especially when heard back to back. One of those examples of how the same notes song will communicate a wide range of emotions depending on the instruments and the key.

    For thousands of years I have sat upon this throne. I have heard every sad tale that can be told by human lips. When I was a kid my parents purchased this game for me (CD Version). I would play the game and get stuck on the Island with the trolls and die all the time, also my computer would freeze during that scene. It wasn't until we got the internet (around 1997) and a faster computer, that I decided to try again. Went online and found a walkthrough and was so pleased to finally finish the game!! Now I have played it I don't know how many times! Fun Fact: The guy who does the voice for Alexander is the same guy who voices "BEAST" in the cartoon Beauty and the Beast :D

    It's interesting to see how the games evolved just in terms of playtime, to say nothing of graphics and sound. King's Quest I-III could all be completed in under an hour if you know exactly what to do. King's Quest IV is just about an hour, and V is a little under an hour and a half. And then you hit King's Quest VI and you're up to THREE hours of time to complete the game. It's fascinating to see just how the complexity of these games evolved in less than 10 years.
