An extra detail for you: after Ornstein absorbs Smough, not only does he adopt the famous ground pound attack, he also inherits Smough's laugh, and laughs during the attack!

I never noticed that! Probably because I always kill Ornstein first...
Ornstein becomes terrifying pt.1:
So it is related to his power, hmmm.
so maybe smough's power is somehow tied to his manic behaviour
the attention to detail in your videos and in FromSoftware games, holy...
I found it funny how Ornstein shows reverence to his fallen comrade when absorbing him, while Smough just turns him into a fucking pancake and basically eats him with his hammer when its his turn. 💀
Explain why?
Either Smough is very heartless, or Ornstein was just an illusion the whole time.
I think it could be both, and Smough doesn’t care if he just killed the Captain of the Four Knights.

In my head cannon, he crushes ornstein before he dies so the soul is not absorved by his enemies, like the nameless king does to polly.
I wish that was true but that ornstien wasn't even the real one rather the true ornstien was disgusted by smough

@@yukanayame5984 thats true, that ornstein is not real, It was an illusion, but that illusion still give a soul when killed.
There is theory ornstein put down his duty as royal guard and begin his journey to find the nameless king and become a dragon-person himself like you see in dragon peak mountain in ds3.
is the nameless kings dragon actually called polly?
The eye slits are similar to the silver knight helmets. I’m assuming both were created by the nameless blacksmith.
The markings are on the armor, so yeah.
The Super Mutant you mean 😂😂😂
Check out their lore vid on it- you’re right
@@_HierophantWhere exactly? I totally missed that.
Smough's eye slits remind me of basilisk's true eyes. Perhaps his armor was somewhat inspired by basilisks..?
Also, an executioner who uses a hammer? That's straight up sadistic. The axe and the guillotine were the chosen method of execution for their ability to instill fear in the crowds who would watch on in horror while the condemned would die swiftly. A hammer, (presumably) of solid metal with a diameter equal to that of a small car is quite brutal.
That's a hard call.
Smashed into the ground? God no.
Smacked in the head? Yes, please. You'll be out before your brain bounces the first time
Given Smough’s size and strength. I imagine you would be essentially vaporized pretty quickly. I doubt many beings could survive a hammer that size being smashed down on them.
And watching the condemned get straight-up pancaked is even more intimidating imo 😂
@@CheeseburgersAndBeeryes people would often bribe them to forego the usual sharpening before the execution.
@@Matt-qv8lm Not always. People have suffered major skull injuries and survived. It's quite possible the first strike wouldn't kill you. It's such a sadistic way to execute someone to have to crush them to death.
Imagine being sentenced to death and you walk to the gallows only to see a fat dude with a Volkswagen Beetle at the end of a stick.
The fun thing with Smough is that from the concept art we can learn that he's not fat, but has a very muscular figure.

@@marine47ncaa25 i take that as a compliment. But also why
I think maybe the reasons why he laughs when he kills ornstein is A) Free power and B) It he gets some kind of euphoria realizing that he outlived the captain of the knights of Gywn
Ornstein is already dead in the events of Dark Souls 1, I do believe he's simply a psychopath, desentisized due to killing so many people
@@plasmaflippy9376he is not dead, he is away in search of the nameless king
@plasmaflippy9376 isnt that smough?
Its not the real Ornstein though and Smough is well aware of this
I like to think that it's simply "Smashing a motherfucker makes me feel joy", which is why he also laughs while trying to smash the player character.
I always thought that Smough didn't hesitate to kill Ornstein because he knew that he was an Illusion, and had long left Anor Londo.
Agree. It is written in the dragon slayer set in DS3 that Ornstein has left the land in search of the nameless king
And Smough's set says he is the last knight to stand in defense of the ruined cathedral. Ornstein in DS1 has to be an illusion.
Maybe they are both illusions? Cuz in theory Smough was eaten by Aldritch much later. So, maybe these two are the impressions Gwendolyn had of them and that's why Smough is so sadistic while Ornstein is more noble. It's just the behaviour Gwendolyn THOUGHT they'd have based on his own opinion of them?
@@Aidan1488 i believe smough was actually there whereas ornstein was the illusion because smough never left his post and aldrich appeared in a far later cycle in which he rose to power and ate smough and gwyndolin.
>kill illusion
>aquire Soul of Ornstein
Something doesn't quite add up, here.
Remember, despite just how sadistic and evil this guy is, he still did his guard duty to his last breath trying to stop Aldritch
He didnt just do his duty he was the last defender everyone else both god and mortal has abandonded their duty or died. Then someone just like him a cannibal comes into the city and likely offered him power, riches and slaves to eat. Smough refused the easy out instead fighting to the end for the duty everyone else abandoned.
Or it is all just a lie and Smough and Aldritch are the same person
Where is everyone getting this from?
@@remrad4315 Dark Souls 3 it is revealed that the old dragonslayer (Orinstein) left to follow the Nameless King (Gwyn Unpersoned Firstborn) and his armor/corpse can be found nearby the nameless kings boss arena

Excuse me, my eyes are down here.
Nope too far, back up a bit… warmer… yup right there
Ohmygod with that little bit of context his helmet just became the coolest and most disturbing piece of armor in the game!
Smoughs laugh is one of the only things that will shivers up my spine just because of the way the sounds, it’s human but also non-human it’s such a great sound effect for him
The whole interaction between the two remains me of when Vegeta told nappa “ I have no use for useless fools “
The slids/visor also look similar in shape the silver and black knight helmets now that I think about it
Somewhat reminiscent of the frog-mouth helms we see the Ruin Sentinels wearing as well. That’s probably more due to it being a good visor design than Drangleic being inspired, though.
In DS3 when you look up in Smough's armour description it is literally said that all this time Smough was ''the only knight left to protect Anor Londo'', so basically Ornstein is simply a phantom or projection/illusion created by Gwyndolin.
In DS3 Aldrich also ate Gwyndolyn, but I killed him in DS1, so maybe instead of making a crazy-ass clame that things with physical strenght, physical loot and souls are illusions, just maybe those are like different timelines?
Or are you saying that the Silver Knights you run in in DS1 AND in DS3 are also illusions?
I never realized that creepy sound he makes is him laughing. Makes me love his character even more
To be fair, not all coworkers are friends

That pine resin line made me laugh. Thank you
The little things that get put into these games like the twitching hand of ornstein before smough crushes him, is what makes these games so special
Always seen his crushing of ornstein as love for his friend. Ive noticed a pattern where love seems to be depicted be killing and basically absorbing the dying on. Like your marriage with Anri or Nameless king absorbing his dragon.
I have this theory that smough is actually a mimic, there are quite a few reasons, but the biggest one is the laughter. It sounds like muffled mimic laughter. I encourage you to look into the theory if you are interested 👍

Meanwhile even the Illusion of Ornstein is an honorable and respectful knight, gently placing his hand over his fallen comrade’s body in a show of gentleness and respect before borrowing Smough’s power to finish the battle.
Meanwhile Smough is just the opposite in almost every regard.
Illusion?
@@Clonesoldier501People like to say that the Ornstein we see during the fight is an illusion since in Dark Souls 3 we learn that Ornstein abandoned his post and traveled the world to find the Nameless King. It's likely that the timeline is so convoluted that we saw the multiple fates of Ornstein.
@@falcoon_f_zero9450It still questions me that how Ornstein went to Dragon Peak
@@Clonesoldier501 when you dissolve the illusion of Anor Londo in DS1 and make it sunless, some if not all of the Silver Knights disappeared. @@falcoon_f_zero9450people doesn't say anything. And no one theory ornstein left anor londo because of the text in DS3, the text is to backup what Gwyndolin said in DS1. More like a Doublet illusion ^^
Lowkey always laughed at how Smough crushes Ornstein, but Ornstein puts his hand on Smough like he just lost his bro😂
Here's a few fun facts about Ornstein and Smough!
1. Ornstein is an executioner, his job is to kill people, and if not, finish them off, its easily possible that he knew Ornstein was still alive, but simply chose to finish him off
2. Ornstein is an illusion made by Gwyndolin so that Smough doesn't go insane because of his basically best friend's death
3. When you kill Smough first, Ornstein absorbs his power, but during the cutscene, he remains the same size, but its actually the room that gets shrunk.
4. Smough's name was made by just spelling "Sumo" in a fancy way, hence his sumo fighter-like appearance.
this is cool and if you say "sumo" the way it's said in japanese it actually does just sound like "smough". nothing at all like the english way of saying SUE-mo. in japanese its suMOU with a real quick almost devoiced "su".
Another fun fact - the first two are basically fan fiction, and not the good one.
Smough crushes Ornstein with glee because that isn't actually Ornstein his friend and compatriot. What you fight in DaS 1 is an illusion summoned by Gwyndolin. The real Ornstein left Lordran to find a cure for the Undead curse elsewhere, in Drangleic. The Ornstein you fight I'm DaS2 is the true one.
Yet we can get the actual soul of Ornstein in DS1, hinting he's real. And what about reading in DS3 that he had abandoned his post in search of the Nameless King? It's like the timeline is so convoluted that we see an alternate fate of Ornstein in each game. Or could it be (gasp*), a plothole? No, impossible.
@@gooeyking What you said might be true. Although Dark Souls 2 is very much canon. We get a lot of references to characters and places of DS2 in DS3, clearly showing DS2 was not written out.
@@gooeyking Two things though: first, there's a difference between leaving something open to interpretation, such as what is "The Deep" in DS3. There's a lot that's not spelled out for you. And then there's just direct retcons to major events that happened. It's just unusual for Dark Souls to so directly contradict previous events, which I don't remember it doing any other times.
Second: If Dark Souls 2 is not canon then how do we find ourselves in the ruins of Earthen Peak in DS3? How do we find the shield of King Vendrick and the armors of Drang soldiers, warriors who were originally from Drangleic? Creighton returns in DS3, so does Alva and Zullie the Witch is also mentioned. Their lore has also stayed the same from DS2. If DS2 isn't canon you'd think their lore would be rewritten to reflect that. But DS3 does acknowledge events of DS2. Or is DS3 not canon either? XD
@@gooeyking would love to see proof of this thing you made up lmao

Honestly having those couple sets of false eyes is such a cool design. It’s like how certain animals have adapted to have different prints and patterns on their skin to either intimidate or confuse their opponent. If you can’t tell where their eyes are, you may not know what they’re able to see, and what you aren’t.
Ornstein kinda hates his guts though because of the whole cannibalism thing
Glad to see Micolash starting his own yt channel keep it up bro
Almost a decade playing this game. Nev3r noticed smough is laughing
Ill fight through anything to get up that elevator.
Excellent video ! ! The twitching fingers at the end gave me chills ! !
The explanation for where he actually sees from felt like dropping weights that I have carried on my back until now. The idea of his eyes being on the armor's neck never made sense to me, because it would mean his eyes were at the same level of his shoulders, making it hard to imagine his anatomy. But this, this makes so much sense! Thanks a lot!
Only sounds I heard in this fight were mine curses to this beautiful game
You have a good voice for narration and/or storytelling.😮✨
The whole bulbous part of the head and the face being all one helm is a pretty cool design, never noticed it before
The double fake-out with the helmet is clever. Armour works best when it leaves room between metal and body to absorb blows. The usual problem with full helms is that the only way to see through them is to press one's face right up against the holes/slits, leaving very little space for shock absorption.
_Notice how the bit of armour with false eyes bulges outwards. It's perfectly shaped to deflect/absorb blows._
This deceptive strategy is utilized all throughout the armour. Smough isn't fat according to his concept art. The bulbous shape of his armour exists entirely to deflect blows and make enemies assume it reflects the anatomy within. Even the man-boobs were designed well. Normally boob-armour is extremely flawed because the cleavage directs force right into the sternum. Yet here they very intentionally shape the armour to avoid such a flaw. If an attacker tries striking Smough's heart, they will not only aim in the wrong place, but also strike a portion of the armour well-shaped to deflect a blow.
The two slits and double illusion look insane bro!
I like Orenstein's phase 2 cut scene more. He lays his hand on his fallen comrade to briefly mourn him before absorbing his power.
Been playing this game since 2012, never nade the connection that that noise was Smough laughing. That's makes him so much more unsettling.
One thing to consider is that he did notice the twitching fingers and robbed the kill to be able to absorble his friends power before the player does
Smough was truly enlightened to the lie of the first flame. He understood his position as executioner, and took advantage of this to bottom feed off his victims. He fed off the table scraps from the ones above him, to gain their souls and become powerful.
I love smough as a character, a rejected knight of gwyn still devoted to furfill his purpose even after aldrich appears, truly an honorable knight even if a cannibal executioner
the eye hole slits remind me of the silver knights making them even cooler for me
"Worry not, my valiant comrade. I will avenge your death with everything in my power."
"Smough, I am not dead."
"I will even use your strength if it means to avenge my fallen brother."
"What do you mean even my stre-"
I absolutely have never seen those extra eyes on the mask, only ever noticed the slit
The glee of the next willingly approaching meal. He doesn't have to hunt when he uses the perfect bait: the lord vessel and the undead legend together.
