Hey Jimmy, I’m a boat builder on the Gold Coast in Oz, The little cracks in the back end of the leading edge cap are from differential flex between plywood skin and the leading each cap at the rabbit where the ply is glued and screwed. Not a big deal. We get the on yacht spars all the time, give it a little grind back with 36g resin disc, acetone wipe and reglass with 6oz E glass and West System epoxy, Peelply it, let it go off, rip the peelply off, sand it up and paint. Two hours work tops. Any questions Just ask, love your work by the way!

Jimmy, the fuel could dissolve some of the adhesives and sealant if they are not rated for the correct class and type to be around fuel. If you can boroscope the wing that may be the best way to inspect it. You may need to pull the fuel tanks out to inspect the spar and other wing structures. -Billy

So. after you did all the work for that family getting all the others running, I assume 100% at your expense, they back out of the deal. I also assume it then came back to them wanting more money now that you got them running for them? That's just really crappy of them to say the least. Personally, I would not have dealt with them on the P51 after being treated that way.

You could look for a Cobra owner, or contact the Bielsko company in Poland, and FIND people qualified to inspect and if necessary repair such a wooden plane. Walking away is a bit too simple. Not a fan of the walk the plank wood-stang. Gives me the Heebeegeebees. Some will point out the Vikings had wood wings, however there is a big difference between a legit manufacture, and a dude in the back yard. Sell the motor, then cut it up for firewood.

I like whenever you do a video of a kit or a plane that somebody who has passed away owned or built cause it's something they have most likely spent lots of years and money and effort into and you get to put something from their legacy or what they left behind up on TH-cam basically 4ever for everyone to see regardless of whether you buy it or not, that's awesome in my book. 🌴 🤔 well I’m not the brightest penny in the bunch , but👈🏼 those wings looked pretty sturdy from were in sitt’n , ya you could do a flex test to see if there’s big concern , , but if your worried about the seams coming apart , due to moisture or probably expansion, you could just dremel out those seams and fill them with epoxy and mill fiber , a little primer and paint your good to go , and not that expensive of a fix , having another mechanic working on it with video or pictures of the repairs I think would be your best bet , as for flying it home , to Florida, a bit of test flying to make sure the little lady is trust worthy and let er rip ! “ WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG !” , hey do you own a parachute 😂

All these negative comments about homebuilt aircraft and wood show a general ignorance and fear in the public which is why only a select few get to experience the thrill of playing in the clouds in something you built made from a natural material. Wood is a well proven and well respected material in aeronautics and can be tested, checked and maintained for many years in any climate. “Navy-on” that’s a first for me. I would say though wear a pilot pack when you maiden her…. Just in case - hope that gorgeous canopy can be jettisoned. Interestingly the Nah-vee-on is famously a descendant of the Mustang

I couldn’t disagree with more than the previous commenter. Wood planes that have been stored indoors will remain as solid as the day it was built. All you need to do to check the planes wooden parts is to buy or borrow a digital moisture meter. If the wood is damaged or rotted, the moisture level will be high. I’ll bet that the meter tells you that the wood is solid and dry.
The plane could use a paint job but otherwise it’s very cool Jimmy. I agree that you should sell it BUT, please get it going and take it for a spin first ok. Btw, I am a fan of wooden boats and have had several of them. Well maintained wooden boats last forever and that’s a hull that sits in the water for its entire life. Your wooden plane has maybe been rained on a few times but otherwise I’m 99% sure the wooden air frame is solid as a rock.
Good luck either way my friend. 👍🇺🇸✌️

Jimmy, 🤔... The wings don't come off, However I'm sure the nose comes off along with the engine and the rudder... How long would it be if those came off? Would it be short enough if those were removed to stand it up vertical front side down on a low boy semi trailer? 😉... Oh, it's just a thought, even though it's a crazy one... Maybe just crazy enough to work... 🤪

If only first flown in 2017 you can be fairly certain the wood very good it would have all be properly treated and will probably be still good in 50yrs
Get an inspector to look it over / service fit a simple radio and fly it home you start messing about fitting panels and lights it will just be another excuse not to fly it,
You don't fancy it then get someone else to fly it back for you. Lot a pilots out there would love to own that aeroplane

I'm amazed it has very little (if any) dihedral to the main wings... The bad thing about wood, is it is much more susceptible to heat, and cold and humidity, than metal, and over time that stuff, mainly the glues, would dry out and not be flexable leading to delamination. That could be a very serious and a fatal outcome. awe hell, I think you should... a) keep it and b) fly it at least once! Then maybe park it.

I wouldn’t worry too much about much about the wood. You’re in dry Texas and it looks like it’s hanger kept. A good going over with a good A&P mechanic and she would be fine.

The problem is if he does fly it back to Florida, then it's in a humid environment and how long will the wooden structure last before it becomes a sponge?
