    To think what The Godfather is and what could have been had the Paramount "geniuses" had their way... But they had Francis Ford Coppola, a true artist, fighting for his vision. And that vision gave us Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, John Cazale, James Caan...Can there be a more perfect cast? I doubt it. What a movie.

    • @MorganKing95

      Agreed, the cast and characters are perfect, as well as the story and direction. The novel is also really worth reading, whether you have the seen film or not

    Brando had it all. Intelligence, strength, sensitivity, extreme sensuality and under the cool exterior there was anger and passion. He brought it all to the screen. He makes it so real, you forget who he is and become totally immersed in the character and the story. He was pure genius, There are other great actors, but I don't think anyone gets close to Brando.

      Laurence Olivier excelled in an acting approach that was already well-established; Brando helped establishing an entirely new acting approach to film acting that influenced multiple actors for years to come.

    One of my favourites. He behaves so naturally on screen. You can really see how his emotions switches and bubbles inside of him, he is really living the character.
    There are many great actors but he had something special, whenever he walked into a scene, all eyes were on him. Of course his unique attractive looks helped but it's a brutal and painful honesty in his eyes that really shined through at his best moments.

    Last Tango in Paris, is not only Brando's best performance as an actor, it's also the best film he's ever been involved with. Not only is it superbly directed, it also show's Brando as who he was a person. There is loneliness hidden under impatience in his performance. He is not acting, he is performing as his emotions say he is. Absolute perfection.

    • @MorganKing95
      @MorganKing95 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I completely agree with you, and yet Brando hated doing that movie, and so did Maria Schneider too. However, I would probably have felt the same way if I was going to act in that movie; it may be beautiful, dramatic, and artistic, but the sexual scenes were so realistic that Maria felt they were completely real, almost like she felt she was really being raped.
      Quote from Brando regarding the movie: "Never again will I make a film like this one. For the first time, I have felt a violation of my innermost self. It should be the last time"
      It's nevertheless one of my favorite movies with him, and I actually like that performance much better than The Godfather.

    • @athenapictures
      @athenapictures 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      MortyBoy15 it's strange that you said that because in one documentary, it is said Brando felt the two greatest directors he has ever been able to work with were Francis Ford Coppola and Bernardo Bertolucci. It also should be noted that although Maria Schnieder wasn't able to reconcile with the director, Brando and Bertolucci were able to be friends again in a few years.
      But yeah, agreed. The Godfather was a great performance and all, but Last Tango in Paris was such a realistic and painful and heartbreaking performance that it literally put me to tears.

    • @MorganKing95
      @MorganKing95 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      arthousefanatic Really? I've always thought Elia Kazan and Francis Ford Coppola were his favorite directors, and that he never wanted to act in a movie like "Last Tango in Paris" again. But again, there are constantly rumors about Brando, so it's possible that you're right

      @Kelly Angel Burn I haven't seen the whole of Apocalypse Now but I have seen Kurtz's speech about horror. It's similar to the uncanny valley. In some ways Brando's TOO natural, to the point where it paradoxically makes Kurtz seem unnatural, which adds to his godlike presence. I've also seen the deleted scene where he's surrounded by children and they seem completely comfortable around him, even though he's murdered members of their tribe. To quote Heart of Darkness, which is the source material for Apocalypse Now, "No, they were not inhuman. Well, you know, that was the worst of it - this suspicion of their not being inhuman".

    With Brando you can't choose. The tiniest role but when he comes on you are glued to the screen and pray that it never ends As jack Nicholson said when Brando goes everyone moves up one but till movies last no one moves up. There aren't any Brandos. He is a class act, a class apart an inexplicable class by himself. He is indescribable.. Oh god the languages don't have words for gods chosen oone.

  • @cluman1

    I saw the first film Brando made, The Men and thought he was good but it was Brando's performance in a Streetcar Named Desire that blew me away. Phenomenal performance. You look at his landmark films: Streetcar, Zapata, Waterfront, Godfather, Tango, etc...it's easy to see why he's regarded as the greatest actor to have ever lived. I just wish he took acting seriously as he aged. So many great roles he passed on. I guess everyone has to carve out their own path in life. Still a great body of work by a great actor.

    You forget “ The Men “ (1950)where he plays a bitter, paralyzed war-veteran. From director Fred Zinneman who later directed classics like High Noon and The Day Of The Jackal (adapted from Frederic Forsyth’s classic novel). Marlon does a great perfomance in what is, if i’m right, his first feature in film.
