    Karen, I'm 60 and have been thrifting for 45 years! I would open up the seams on both sides of the skirt, creating side slits. The skirt would fit better over the trousers.

  • @whatwedeserve
    @whatwedeserve 2 ปีที่แล้ว +92

    Many cleaners have a tailor. Have them open the seams on either side of the skirt, add a triangle of fabric close to the color or a complimentary color. That will allow the skirt to hang properly over the pants. I love the concept of this pant/skirt combo. Would be worth seeing the outcome.

    • @gemqueen1866
      @gemqueen1866 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      great idea, I was thinking to open the side-seam on the skirt. I don't know what H&M were thinking to be honest!

    • @sewfax3292
      @sewfax3292 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same page! If the pant goes all the way up the slits could be left open and sewn for a finished look👍🏾

    • @FayeDe_Lanty
      @FayeDe_Lanty 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great minds! I was thinking to slice the skirt up both sides too but leave it like that...either allowing it fray or finish it off with a seam...I think the openness could add nice movement and flow...what do you think?

    • @pamelahowell2082
      @pamelahowell2082 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe add panels to the sides

    Love watching your videos. For the (skant-which is a skirt/pant) you can add a 2-3" slit on either outseam of skirt to allow for movement, great item

    Love thrifted clothes! I buy secondhand from charity shops and refashion to look better- DONT get rid of the trouser/ skirt combo! Get some scissors and cut up close to the side seam from the front, right up to hip level or where you need more room. Then I would curve the front panel to round it off over the thigh. Either leave to fray or it could be bound by a dressmaker in a contrasting colour- orange or green! You could curve the back piece as well. I think it would look great!

    Always love your thrifting videos! I cannot resist vintage coats. I might have a problem 🥴 Tip for the Margiela: you could have an alterationist put a slip of matching (or not) fabric down each side of skirt to get that straight/flared look. Make them uniquely your own 💃🏾🤷🏾‍♀️❤😍

    For the skirt you can open the side and sew back only a half ( where your widest part at ) leave the hem outside rather than inside just to give a bit det. Hope you like the idea 😊

      I was gonna say the same thing!! 😆 Yes just OPEN up the sides to the widest part of the hip. There are pants underneath so it won't matter. It would open up that area just enuf yet so flirty!! Then u have the "ILLUSION" of the skirt w the playful pants hiding everything underneath! Genius!!!

    Karen thank you for speaking to sustainability...it's such an important style message that needs to get out there and as consumers we have the power to shift the way the industry works, simply by voting with our dollar for fashion that is kind to people and planet. Recycling, reusing and reimagining with brands such as ThredUp is a great choice. Like you thrifting is in my DNA and its a huge part of my life...in fact it's changed my life too. Thrifting has really reconnected me back to my closet, community, sublime story and helped me develop a unique personal style that is intrinsic to me...a total vibe right! x

    I've been shopping at ThredUP for over 4 years. I've redone my entire wardrobe with only clothes from them. They used to sell jewelry but stopped and they weren't trained to know what was worth a lot so I scored tremendously. I'm so pleased that Karen buys from them. Totally worth shopping there and easy returns too.

    Hiya Karen! I immediately thought to ruche up the Margiela skirt/trouser combo so it looks more belt like; even ruche up one side, safety pin on inside or out, if you get a big one it’ll look like it’s part of the design. You could even use a funky broach! I like them, wouldn’t cut unless I was cutting, hemming the entire sides so it looks more like flaps, *maybe* leather inserts to make it into a looser more A-Line skirt. Just what popped in my head! Didn’t get that FAB patchwork shirt? Omg I want it😬! So weird how Greenpoint has changed, that’s where we had a house & I bloody hated it there but this was 21 ½ years ago when W’burg was just getting the “pioneers”. I actually prefer the old neighborhood even tho I hated it, it was one of those little unique neighborhoods which are quickly disappearing😞. Have a lovely weekend! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️

    Hi there Karen! As I’ve been watching you literally for years, I was really surprised by the fact that you are attending NY fashion week this year! To me that’s a sign of progress work wise, so congratulations and good luck! Your excellent sense of style and mix of high and low -which is what I subscribe to- is what differentiates you from the rest of the masses if you don’t mind my saying so. As for the Margiela skirt/pants, why don’t you try cutting it in the sides where the inside stitching is? It will definitely widen and given you the cut you want to. The best of luck with your next ventures!

    As for the trousers, they made the skirt way too small to fit over the fuller trouser. I think you can make it work with some alterations. For example, how about adding a strip of material on both sides of the skirt that would make it wider, with a more a-line flow?

  • @andreagascoigne6735

    Hiya. Yes - I've had a similar idea to others below : a good seamstress might be able to put in a very tall, elongated triangle of fabric (thin end of triangle pointing upwards, obvs). So, it's a kind of panel, but it's tapered so that the lower half of the skirt will be wider (giving a straight- skirt look) ...and you'll also get more fabric to ease the tight hipline....
    Coz I think you could really rock that look if you fixed the skirt : the trousers are a brilliant shape ....
    Xxxx

    Great video! I remember wearing dresses over wide-legged trousers/ jeans as a youngster in the '70's. Dress or skirt has to be a-line x

    Love this! I've never tried Thred Up! I think if you pressed the skirt/pant, it may work better for you? It's not all that bad and I know you can style it up!

    Thrifting in NYC is the best. It used to b much better before I left and moved to Europe. There is a three storey warehouse building on the West side with everything from furniture to the most amazing clothes. When my son was born our friend gave him about 25 Christian Dior baby outfits still in their boxes from a thrift shop. My mother often sends over large parcels of amazing things she discovers for me or my daughter. My daughter has been known for her distinctive style since she started Montessori 15 years ago. You will also find in many buildings or recycling areas, people leave things they don't want. My son brought me home three Michael Kors jackets, one a trench, still with their tags that way when he was visiting home and my daughter 'found' a whole ox of unused, unopened Clinique products that I grabbed off her. New Yorkers love a bargain, rich or poor. My son lives in Switzerland at the moment and he furnished his whole flat from the practice there of leaving out unwanted furniture for anyone to take. They do this in NYC as well. Some of my favourite thrift shops from when I was younger are gone now and some have gotten a bit price crazy by calling used clothing Vintage. Though I did get a Lagerfeld jacket two years ago for three dollars at the Salvation Army on East 3rd. They had one of those tweed Chanel bags at the NY Opera charity shop next door for $1600, which is relatively inexpensive for the item. I left it since it was brown and gold (not my colours).

    Thanks for taking us along. Perhaps you can have the skirt shortened? I love to look at Maison Margiela, but I cherish wearability too much to ever really wear it.

    I love the skirt pant, I think you can make it work with a slit cut on both sides to the hip where you indicated. I am one of those who Wear a dress over pants. Never thought of skirt over pants will try it😍

    I like the pants Karen you can make it work if you have the pants tailored to be more like a bell bottom. Thank you for all your fashion advice and all your great videos. Love your closet. One Love

    You can open the side of the skirt, and maybe add a pice of other fabric, a pop of colour maybe.

    Those Margiela trousers could look sharp with a bra top or extra cropped top and an oversized blazer or big scarf. But if it's just not you, donate them somewhere. You always tell us not to keep what we don't love, and it's generally really great clothing advice.

    For the pant/skirt perhaps you can take it to a tailor and have the skirt altered to a more A-line fit. Or alter the pant so it is not as baggy.

    Hey Karen, I have so many leather gloves but can’t wear them be of my long nails. I loovveee that yellow & tan sweater. It’s got a preppy look. I would wear it with some plaid pants, loafers & jean jacket.. Or linen pants.

    Thank you for another great video . Shame about the thifted skirt/trousers; agree with you, they don't work, cut all wrong. At the beginning of the video I kept looking at the silver ankle boots behind you, all I could think of was how good they would look with your outfit! Love all the berets, they really suit you!
