Great tips. But I'm 81 and becoming more sensitive to style that refers to looking older. I quite like my age. And in truth, none of your tips refer to age. They are more about being contemporary. I absolutely want to look contemporary! When I'm on the subway, I look at how people dress to see what I might like to try. It's a lot of fun! Many ideas are clearly for younger bodies. I love looking at them without wanting to wear them. But I might see an idea that would be great on any body, even an old lady 😅. Something more contemporary. I choose to think when you refer to not looking older, you mean looking "now". Alight. I'm going to go and download that style guide now. Love your videos

The reality is: if you're rich and famous, your bags are seen as a sign of success. If you are just an ordinary worker working a 9-to-5 job, your real bag is likely to be *gtdupe*

    • @baddognobiscuit2
      @baddognobiscuit2 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@LeckySenneI have never associated "rich and famous" with success. Not even as a kid...a long time ago. I thought the most glamorous woman I had ever seen was someone who visited us at a cottage wearing big red polka dots on white ...with matching red nails 😅. I was only 8 after all. If you want a designer purse, pinch your pennies for as long as it takes to buy one. But don't assume someone with a bargain basement bag is less successful. Or that people will think you aren't successful because you have a bargain basement knock-off.

Because “old” is automatically bad bad bad apparently. Ageism in fashion is a prejudice that really needs to be addressed. Imagine you are 70 or 80 and how this kind of thing makes you feel. Like you have a disfiguring disease that cannot be hidden well enough. It’s truly terrible. A better topic for this kind of video may be about keeping up with fashion, or having classic style, or avoiding frumpiness. But not something no one can change. Indeed, that is the definition of discrimination.

Is it wrong to look one’s real age? I’m over 60, live in hot and humid southern USA, so I prefer to wear both loose tops and bottoms during the summer here. I believe if I feel comfortable only then I look confident and good in my outfit. As long as I’m happy with my image in the mirror why bother about rules of dressing and proportion? And who made these rules anyway?

nothing wrong with that. in my opinion, what we wear and how we present ourselves should be tied to who we are, what we're comfortable in, how we feel more like ourselves.
it is easy to understand her video(s) as "you should / shouldn't" wear this and that. probably becouse women (more often then men) are under the pressure to look a certain way, and for sure today everyone's trying extra hard to look forever young.
videos like this are more useful i think if you take them as an informative, if you're interested in understanding or trying something new. not as a criticism on how we look.
only you are expert on you

I totally agree with you. Even if I "look" older than I feel how on earth could I change that in a climate like a summer in Greece or in Africa or even Australia? It just goes out of the window as what everyone wishes and does at home is walking around close to naked.
These rules are for certain western women that happen to live in the right climate. For Britain with 13C currently, I'm wearing my cashmere jumper and my linen is in the cupboard. I always looked 10 to 15 years younger that I have the opposite problem. Yet haven't come across any video on how to look older. The real challenge would be:
HOW TO LOOK YOUNG INSTEAD OF YOUNGER.

Justine, thank you for yet another interesting video. I enjoy such videos but often feel left out. I spend most of my time in a wheelchair. Two aspects are a, you become invisible and, b, any clothes which look good when standing lose their impact when sitting. Last weekend I attended a wedding, many emails went around the family about what family members were wearing. I didn’t share the excitement as I felt no one would notice anyway. I enjoy making my clothes and altering older ones. As a result I can be different. I have always loved being myself. I used to enjoy wearing muted colours, much to my husband’s frustration, but now I concentrate on brighter clothes to help my visibility. I always choose looser clothing as I struggle to get dressed and to handle fasteners. Also sitting means my abdomen is at its most and I need to allow for arm/shoulder movement when propelling myself. The dress I made moved beautifully when on and I was sorry it would not be seen in its glory but I still felt its beauty. You know that feeling new, just right clothing practically makes you strut? Well, you can still strut when sitting in that I sat tall and proud and not my usual weary posture. The dress was fully lined with a more jewel like hue and I understitched the lining in the opposite direction, in that the lining edged the neck and sleeve lines. I really liked how the lining and main fabric worked together so wanted to highlight the effect. One of my usual choices is to layer a lot of my clothes. As my clothes don’t get seen moving I like to highlight different types/colours/finishes etc. Writing this has helped me notice how much fun I do get when playing with my clothes, and I am thankful how well my Grandmother taught me to sew. A complete turn about in mood - I think I love being different. Thank you.

I have nasal cannulae attached to a portable oxygen concentrator that I wear as a crossbody sling bag. I have worked on my posture, strength and gait to move gracefully over short distances. My 3 style words are Visible, Engaging and Confident as I work with children. I embrace classic comfortable, effortless clothes in my preferred colour palette of jewel tones with proportions that flatter my body type. My favourite accessory is a smile coupled with eye contact. Fantastic tips!! 🙌 Some things I also advocate for are:
    1) Gradually getting used to bolder colours with baby steps. Maybe a medium periwinkle, lavender, cherry, or cornflower blue for example. Start small and get used to seeing yourself in that colour first, and then go brighter.
    2) One signature accessory in a bright colour to also ease into the transition. An eye-catching scarf, pair of gloves, or handbag can really change the whole vibe of an outfit.
    3) Make it a point to look at the people around you on a typical day out, and/or fashion accounts online. If you see an outfit that you love on someone else but hadn't considered for yourself, then use that as inspiration to build an outfit to suit your body type.

Over the decades, what with gravity, diet, and forty years at a “desk-job”, my darn stomach has almost equaled my breast measurements and hip measurements. I’m 5’ 3” and 130 ponds, so I don’t feel I’m overweight, but I sure look it. I’ve tried the belt and tucking the front of the shirt into the pants front, but, on me, it still looks frumpy. As I rarely leave my home, it’s just me I’m trying to please, so for the most part, I’m embracing the “frump”! (I still wear my rings everyday with gemstones color coordinated with my outfit. Also, the boxy + fitted is really great - I like to do, for example, a boxy blazer with a fitted blouse and fitted trousers, or wide-leg trousers with a fitted blouse and fitted cardigan. Always great advice here!

@@NotARussianBot999This is wrong. Silver jewellery turns dark even with everyday use. I’m talking about actual silver instead of silver-coloured mimics. That’s why i have stopped wearing them now.

Tarnishing is inevitable with silver but you can slow it down. I only wear sterling silver because everything else irritates my skin, and I've found it tarnishes more when exposed to the air (I live in a coastal region so maybe that adds to it). I have lots of earrings and hang them up on boards, so what I did was I put the boards into large plastic ziplock bags and keep them sealed. Other jewellery that doesn't hang up, I keep in clear plastic boxes that are closed. It's not pretty like a fancy box would be but it takes much longer now for them to tarnish plus they don't get dusty. I also got a proper silver polishing cloth from a jeweller and use it if they start looking a bit darker.

@molamolalaaa2968 I have a sterling silver ring I put on at least 10 years ago. It has never tarnished. 10 years of constant wear. Beach, swimming pool, washing dishes. Same with the silver ring i have had for 8 months and not taken off. The ones I don't wear every day tarnish. A few rubs and a day of wearing and everything is polished.

I wonder what it would take for style professionals to take ageism out of the equation. Age is a given, you do not look older or younger, that is magical thinking. You can look more energized, more put together or fashionable, but that does not equal younger. Imo being accurate and discerning with words is no less a mark of appreciation for nuance and general taste than having a discerning eye for colours and shapes and fashion.

Merci, Justine! Clear, sound, practical advice as usual, & following it doesn't necessarily require buying scads of new clothes & jewelry. I like that you couch it in terms of modernizing, updating styles rather than focusing on age & youth. (Beautiful cameos by Iris Apfel & Jennifer Lawrence!) As a petite, not-so-tall woman, I will be thrilled when boxy styles start receding. Too often it seems like lazy, cheap design: don't bother to consider the body wearing it, just make it a flat, wide box & it'll fit everyone! I don't remember seeing her in any other colours, but the individual pieces would change, depending on the weather. She would then layer on the same jewellery, all heavy gold and sparkly, and a big, beautiful watch. She received countless compliments from the customers, because she was confident and true to herself, and she really brightened up the workplace!
I sometimes felt quite dowdy next to her, in my classic navy, white, taupe etc, with a very simple, silver bangle and earrings, yet knowing I was dressing for myself, too.

It says to measure your finger, see how many MM that is and then the charts show what sizes in different parts of the world should fit you.
Here is the problem - according to all of the charts, based on the circumfrence of my finger, they say I should be a US size 13 and I am not. I wear a size 9.
Is there a more accurate way to do this conversion? If I need to take some rings to a jewelery store and ask for help that's fine too. I'm just not sure what I'm doing wrong with these charts and the measurement.

Yeah and as light summer it makes click, why most autumn colors in fair fashion looks bad on me. Fair fashion misses fine tones and often fitted feminine cuts, like a woman should be a guy in cut or a child with no curves.
The belt thing is a good idea, but where and how to get that without looking comical?
Im a theatrical romantic in kibbe and i see second hand great pieces, who are just to overzise or untailored. Linen is just stiff, not soft and seldom tailored, even if its has healing frequencie. I find bright and cool soft tones more via second hand
Prints: Low contrast season means low contrast print and pattern or middle size, also not small, but middle big earrings and necklaces. Soft or romantic means no stripes, caros or too hard geometric prints. Also: A lot of prints are made creative, but often mix seasons like summer and autumn and a print should have only colors of one subseason and color psychology.
Small prints, but having a large head in proportion..bad.
Small head with large, wide prints...bad.
    Harmony is king

What's wrong with looking old? Anyway, anyone should wear what the heck they want. I've had people asking why I'd wear a skirt that makes me 2 sizes bigger. Well, obviously because it's an amazing skirt and I love it👍 don't ever let anyone tell you what to wear or what to avoid, and be as old, fat, crazy, dull, colorful, boring or extravagant as you want😉

Hi Justine, I went to your website and will be looking for your style tips.
I did have a suggestion about your jewelry page. Maybe it's my eyes being 70 years old, but it was hard to see the jewelry with the cream colored background. Perhaps a darker shade? I love your pieces. As a couple of descriptions say they are dainty. 🙂🖖💕💕💕

Very interesting... I don't make these mistakes... But I'd rather learn how to avoid looking too sexy, too bright... I'm tall, slim, long red hair and pale skin.. Whatever I wear, I stand out from the crowd, which is nice, of course, but....In my country women wear a lot of dark colors, whereas I go into bright or white shades, as they look better with my skin tone, so my color palette doesn't help me either....

May take on neutrals is that colors are also cultural. In the USA, neutrals are considered elegant, and are used on walls to sell houses, as well as clothes. Very natural, which I like, yet BORING! Living in Mexico has opened my eyes to the vibrancy of colors available in the world!

I’ve rarely seen (and I travel across the world) any old woman wearing neutrals they’re usually in color and patterns and a lot of accessories.. I guess because neutrals emphasizes old age skin and discoloration while colors & patterns distract from that.
In contact whenever I try bright colors & patterns I feel older & im in my early 30s so 🤷🏻‍♀️

I put my earrings and necklaces into sets and photo them. I can easily decide which set to wear with outfits or to take for traveling. Sets are designed to match in metal and scale (mire dominant necklace to pair with smaller earrings for example). With or without earrings and necklace I wear stack rings and staking bracelets or bangles daily. I love slim rings stacked and I love 2 or 3 bracelets on each wrists. I put pins on my hats and bags often. I don’t care what others think of me wearing loads of jewelries. It’s my signature whenever i am out of door, regardless if i wear tee and jeans or a dress.

Iris Apfel doesn't work in fashion anymore, she used to, when she was alive.
Older people wear a lot of color, very fresh modern tones as well.
You are not exactly a youth anymore but you still wear black too much, that is a neutral,
old fashioned. Older people tend to look much more relaxed and many are very playful.
Look at all the Street video's from Milan, London etc, those with money have so much fun.

Thanks for the belt idea because it is so hot (34-36 C) and humid that linen is my best friend. At the grocery last night, I did kind of feel like I was in lounge mode. Black now makes me look dead half of the year so I only have a pair of black pants, a button up shirt, a top, a pair of all purpose flats, a tailored raincoat, and that is it. I have taken advantage of the blues, greens, teals, wine colors, and tomato that have been popular over the past year and work really well with my hair and skin coloring. I am kind of a fabric junky, and I like a well designed pattern, but I have really reined myself in to items that work well with multiple solid pants and jackets and that make me happy when I see them. For the first time in more than a decade, I am beginning to have a wardrobe that has a lot of mix and match options, livens up my skin and hair, and makes it fun to get dressed. I can’t wait to see your guide and get more tips for improvement.

Please don‘t talk in terms of looking „old“ talk in terms of looking elegant or contemporary vs frumpy. Have you seen how young people dress these days? Like they barely could be bothered to get out of bed.

I tend to wear neutrals, say black pants and cardigan, not clingy to the body, but I wear a swirled design fitted top that has tiny bits of black in it. I tend to wear very little jewelry, like a bracelet and earrings only. Thats because I follow your advice. I have received numerous compliments, thanks to you!!!!

Thank you for yet another helpful video! I am turning 40 this year and notice how my body changes. Style is an individual expression, but I feel much younger than I look. So I would be very grateful for more creative impulses from you about style & age ❤

Love this. I would love to see a video from you about men's fashion! I'm a trans man in my late twenties, and I have so much trouble finding clothes that aren't either too young or too old (or too boring 😭). I still love fashion as a man, and now that I'm transitioning and starting to love my body, I don't want to dress it in khaki trousers and patterned button ups forever!!

When I see women wearing jewelry of all types, earrings, necklace, bracelets, rings, it makes me think that they were teenagers or already adults in the 80s and never stopped dressing like that. Not only did we do all of that together but we also had stick pins and brooches on our jackets and hats, and wore anklets when the weather showed our ankles. It was fun! But it was too much. Another great video, thanks!

They were fun indeed :) and bright ...but can't help thinking that so much of the plastic that was used (and still is used) ended up on the wrong side of the planet ...I tend nowadays to use metals and as much as possible stones/ other natural materials , though they are heavier & expensive . But nothing that spells resin.

@@flyingsnow00Re resin, I own a couple of earring pairs as well as a multi strand choker from Angela Caputti. Nothing baroque, simple and modern. The resin used is from remains of luxury resin eyeglass frames made in Italy.

Agreed, and it's funny because I think that sort of "maximalism" looks great on other people sometimes, but it makes me feel gaudy and ridiculous now. I'm approaching 40 and as I get older, I'm appreciating ever more the beauty of simplicity.
