  • "This is a story about a very special pen called Max and a very broken young man named Samuel. Max is a sort of pen with a rare magic of consciousness and Samuel is a sort of young man with severe anxiety and depression. He believes academic success is the only success in life. He failed his tenth standard exam twice in a row. As Samuel heads possibly towards his third failure in a row, Max must deliver him to his true destiny or Samuel could be a victim of his own adamant belief. He is one failure away from stepping up the noose. But can a pen succeed where Families have failed?"

Huge thanks to Jompi Ete for sharing her arts and Gyamar Nanam for helping us with both arts and the art gallery. This film would have been incomplete without the help of these two brilliant artists.
Also a big thanks to my big family for helping me out whenever I needed them.

I'm a pre-med graduate. Honestly my entire college life was never fun to me. Why? Because it mentally drained me. Also it's not my line of what I'm good at and my parents chose this course for me. I have no choice but to obey them. I just counted the days till the end of graduation for it to be over. Good thing that there's my friends who makes my life fun but when I return home, I became sad again.
My dreams and passion is opposite to what my parents want. I love art and anything related to creativity. Even if the piece I make is being done in a month, or year, I didn't complain because I simply love what I am doing.
Now, I'm healing and heading towards my pursuing of my artist life!!!
Academics is not the only way to succeed in life. Everyone has different talents, abilities, & hobbies. Don't chose the way for which you are not made for, it will lead you no where. And don't listen to toxic societies that brings you down.
Just breathe in, breathe out, believe in yourself and never give up!!

I was in tears as I watched this excellent short film. Education is in crisis in almost all parts of the world and desperately many children are falling victim to pointless requirements. There are not enough and appropriate teachers to discover and support individual potential. Perhaps parents could give their children more care and love if they, the majority, were not struggling to make a living while others ( the exploiters) are swimming in money.

I love the fact that the cinematography matches the mindset of the aspirant and what he is going through:
"The simple joys of life that blends with the scenery when he outside, doing what he loves and forgetting his problem.
The sudden dark setting that depicts his mental struggles at home."
The constant show of ⏰ time running out, a mother's love and words of a father who puts his insecurity into his son rather than encouraging him is such a recurring theme for those who give competitive exams. This video is in itself is like a Pen to me that teaches us to expand in our abled field instead of following the queue and to go forward. Beautifully captured and created.
    .
    .
(To my dear aspirants: do give your best but please remember that no exam is ever bigger than your mental well being and that there is plenty of room for improvements+success in the fields that one can fully understand or enjoy doing the most! Just be a good creator, observer, smart and hardworking enough.)

A pen is capable to change the whole future of a student as well as a new generations. I'm always grateful for this and today because of your art today I really realised it. In memory of a neighbor, a young man working in research in the rat race of one of the very top institutions in the US. He probably missed so much in life just to get admitted. Probably his research results weren't turning as expected to be funded. I didn't meet him, but they said he was very nice and polite. So sad, finally found him 6 days later. I would advise him, be like water, surrender, put aside your ego and your expectations and those of others, something greater will come your way. Rest in Peace.
Quote. “Success is a poor teacher.” My dad must have repeated this maxim a hundred times as I grew up. There are some lessons that only failure can teach. If you want to mature, you need to fail. Jesus failed. So should we.

Indeed, many are going through alot. We must learn that challenges doesn't define whom we're, not until we accept defeat.
We have to be strong in the phase of challenges, encouraging one another. Many have made mistakes, but every mistake can be corrected.
Thank God i was able to stand after going through similar challenges.

I just want to tell everyone one thing. Be easy. Success is nothing but it just the something gives us excitement during our journey. Have fun, take it easy and enjoy every second of our life. And one more thing is that never try to give up if we fail at something for thr first time. Even myself, I have gone through such period too at several point of my life. I tried so many to escape from the problem without even thinking a second but later I found that if i had a chance to calm down myself and thought of it, i could have easily solve those problems. Just a few days back, I was about to give up my project just because i had no clue what am i doing. Then one of my teacher told me not to give up even if i could not make it, i still can say i did something. I felt good and start my project from the point where i left.
So guys, have fun and take it easy. Just do what you really love. Enjoy it.

A powerful message! Our societies these days put so much emphasis on examinations that they forget the importance of learning and a student’s passion for life that always exceeds the boundaries of the formal classroom. So much for progress…. I’ll take the days of the 1950s and 1960s with limited teaching resources, blackboards and chalk, over today’s technology any day.

This story is quite relatable with students and young people nowdays. I have also gone through this phase when you are trying but everything arounds you scares you to death. like while I'm driving i suddenly loose focus, while cutting fruits or veggies i don't know how knife goes too close to my wrist and many other things. eventually someone supported me alot, the person also don't know how much he helped me, but I'm really grateful for having them.
I cried watching this because this is completely looking like my story quite a months ago. But one thing that is different and about no one talks is that there are some children who only knows about study. from their childhood the only thing they have done is to study. i myself a student who only knows about study and nothing else like I'm very poor in sports, singing, dancing, cooking, art, or any other activity. But when you start failing in the only thing you know, you don't know any other alternative.
I was a topper till 10th but from 11th my grades fall drastically and the fear is not failing but what to do after failing because i don't know anything else. and this fear just makes your heart heavier and heavier.

@sunitachoudhary4685: Hoping desperately you'll come back to check responses to your message .... Some suggestions: horticulture, childcare, working with animals, caring for the elderly, needlework/sewing, apprenticeship in a trade (eg shoe making, watch repair) .... even working in a shop can bring satisfaction and contentment. You could also talk to a sympathetic teacher because it could well be that underlying anxiety is precipitating a sense of failure.

@@vivicohen199Thanks for the suggestion but you know that these things in india are not much considered and seen as failure. I love my parents most and i never want to look like a disappointment to them. Like there is nothing bad in all these things actually they all are pretty good but they don't think like that and to them these are all wastage of time.
Gratefully i have a teacher who quite understands my situation. They always guide and help me. They are exactly like the pen in the story, i have no idea what i would had done to myself if they don't come to help me

But one day a miracle happened. I was on my way to my hostel from Naharlagun. I saw an opportunity.
I was always an sport enthusiasts and wanted to represent my country to International level. Ever since that day I have a hope, a reason to live on and now I have been training hard to represent my nation and pursuing BTech too.

It's a mistake to try to put everyone in the same box. Not everyone will fit in and some will feel broken and feel like they are a disappointment to those who had certain expectations of them. The only thing parents should expect of their children is for them to find the box they DO fit in and do their best in it. It's important to know that not all in the box will be the same and achieve the same level. True success is finding one's place in life and being content there. It never hurts to strive to become better at something, but it DOES hurt to think that if you don't become the best in your box that you're a failure. Good work on your film. Well written and acted.

It’s so painful just having a only definition of success if you’re not fitting into it. You have to work for always to be in that success circle. To drawing your way, finding ur own success and happiness is challenging and dreadful when ur society especially when your parents have rotten beliefs.. and knowing they will never support you..I can clearly say I gave up on my way. The thing i just want to run away from this life by the way that no one even imagine. Only with myself…

    • @vivicohen199

@mertOdemir: It's so sad to come across all these stories about the sheer Hell of living within the harsh expectations of family and society in general. Parents have a lot to answer for. We are more than the sum of their expectations and demands. It's very important to find the emotional support of at least one older, wise person who knows so-called success lies in contentment with humble occupations.

The power of mothers You better know God created them. I'm an artist. My mom saw it in me when I was a child, bought me easel, paints and brushes inrolled me in art camp. I put it down for a while. When I turned 50, I picked it up again. It started out looking like nothing much, but I was compelled to do it, and it grow, now everyone loves my art. Now I see what my mom saw she wasn't a touchie, feelie kind of mother, but she gave me my first start.😢

I do like the simplicity of the pen, & I'm never without one. I've just read on the Discover website 18/1/23 that the first writing (symbols not letters) alongside Ice Age paintings, dates back some 20,000 years, which goes back far earlier than previously thought. These ancient people were clever because they painted the animals they hunted. They'd even worked out the mating & birthing times within the seasons.

My observation after seeing the short film was that it had really striking cinematography.
The movie's dialogue, music, and sound design are outstanding, establishing the tone and atmosphere. The dialogue is understandable and straightforward, and sound effects enhance immersion and realism. The plot has a well-paced structure with a distinct beginning, middle, and end, and the storytelling techniques, including flashbacks and current events, provide depth and complexity. Overall, the film's storytelling is well-crafted and engaging.
A great deal of symbolism was used in the film, with recurring themes and metaphors that improved the narrative's overall impact and meaning. As an example, the pen itself suggested the possibility of growth and transformation while serving as a powerful symbol of hope and redemption.
The Pen is a successfully constructed short film that creates an unforgettable and fascinating cinematic experience by successfully combining audio design, cinematography, symbolism, and storytelling. My perspective for this analysis is that the film uses a combination of visual and through sound elements to explore concepts of faith, redemption, and the power of human connection.

A beautiful movie well done. Not only in India but in Korea and Japan too young people commit suicide because they cannot take what they perceive as social pressure. In Japan, the obsession with suicide as a form of honorably cleansing their failures is well documented during feudal times death by self disembowelment was sought earnestly.

Very heartouching film. I am watching from Europe Italy. The most important thing is to support our kids in what they are strong, not looking what the neighbours daughter or son does Our children should love what they do in life. There is too much competition in the educational systems and the parents minds worldwide.
