  • Getting rid of the black background in Turkey Tomfoolery from AtmosFX is a challenge because Tom is one tough bird. More specifically he has lots of dark colors in his animation which makes keying a challenge. So going beyond the basics we look at the Luminance and Hue & RGB keying features of HitFilm Express.
For bonus points (and a bit better effect) you can also apply a Matte Cleaner below the Key effect and trying setting the Smooth between 4 and 12, Feather between 0 and 2 and Choke between 0 and 1. As always playing around with the keying and Matte Cleaner values is key to getting a good effect.

Thank you! It turned out great! Went with the luminance method.

For Luminance I think the Lightness option maybe be slightly better than the other ones. You can also add a Matte Cleaner effect to help tune it in. I would set smooth somewhere around 4 to 12, Feather 0 to 2 and Choke maybe 0 or 1. It can really help to get rid of some of the holes but can cause some black speckles around the edge if you push it too far. Tom is just one tough bird.

Very helpful video! I was having the same problem working with dinosaurs. Where's your tip jar?? Lol.

Glad it was helpful :). I don't have the dinos from Atmos but I can image they have a lot of the same issues
