  • AI is notoriously hard to run and typically is thought to just reside in data centers or on expensive graphics cards. However, just for fun, I am seeing just how much AI can a Steam Deck run locally.
Can a Steam Deck run the AI image generator Stable Diffusion?
Here are the Steam Deck specs, if you aren't familiar:
    CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz
    GPU: 8 RDNA 2 CUs, 1.0-1.6GHz
    APU power: 4-15W
Running Windows 11 (on an external hard drive connected via USB)
Software Used: Stable Diffusion Direct ML: (github.com/lsh...)

For an AMD, this seems decent enough. I wasn't able to run DirectML on my RX 580 for some reason. That is still batsh-t slow. But hey, if it works, it works. Thanks for sharing.

On some AMD GPUs you need to add some command line parameters “precision full” and “no half” or “upcast sampling”. Check the automatic1111 GitHub page under AMD for the full details. I needed to use the commands on the integrated graphics on my laptop but not the Steam Deck so really varies on when you need to use them

It is pretty easy but I am booted into Windows (I tried on SteamOS but their OS is just too locked down/dated to work). Basically just follow the installation on the Github for "Stable Diffusion Direct ML" for Windows and that is it.
