Lmao. I wish I was doing "something I love." When you grow up in a poor immigrant family, this is the career you're pushed into. Sure, I thought it was kind of cool as a 10 year old kid, an 18 year old freshman, even a 23 year old grad student, but now as a 26 year old M4, I absolutely hate all of medicine and want to retire as soon as possible. So basically the prime years of my life are gonna be spent torturing myself through work to get a good retirement, but by then I'll probably be a jaded, hurt, difficult person to be around. Such is life.

I am 22 years old and close to 23, and I hate degrees that dont make me money, and I hate the thought of having debt for religiously based reasons. So i am taking nursing right now. I will finish RN in 3 years, so i will be 25 study the MCAT and working as an RN, which will take a year to have a Bachelors (BSN) and my MCAT score at least a 515 or 520 maybe this process will take 2 years. Then i will apply and maybe get in if, after many tries, i dont get in great. I am still an RN and really can keep trying as long as i want. Or do Plan B, which is flight RN to CRNA. I will still be above 100k and, or even more. Total years = if It takes more than one year to pass the MCAT with a desirable score, then I will be 31 one or so after med school or if it takes only 1 year then i will be 30. Basically, i have the rest of my life after 30 or 31 to practice medicine at the level of a physician. That sounds great to me.
This is really cool but im intrested is biochem and biotechnology so cause being a doctor takes so much time and that scares me but hopefully your doing well now.
I have some news for you buddy. You forgot the part where you go back to a university to do your medical pre reqs like (orgo with lab, biochem, etc.) that takes 2 years.
Thank you so much for explaining the steps so explicitly! I would like to become a doctor, but i was confused abt the steps and worried abt the length. Please keep making great vids like these! They're really helpful 😊
I thank the Lord Jesus Christ I started college in highschool. I’m going to finish my bachelors at around 21-22, and medical school I would finish at around 25-26. Perhaps I’ll finish young, Lord willing.
I finished residency at 27 in IM (a long time ago), you do not need to finish college to medical school but probably should as a back up. My sister went to medical school in Canada in the early 80s and finished residency at 23 in family medicine so it can be done much quicker depending on what you want to do. I think the cost of medical school in the states is getting out of hand. One of my daughters is now a 3rd year medical student and has several hundred thousand dollars in debt already.
I’m from india, I’m starting my medical clg next month at 17 yrs old, mbbs course is about 5.5 yrs here so I will be 25.5 yrs by then, if I start my pg the next year then I will finish at 28, further practices and specialisation will take another 5 yrs, so I will be 33 by then, married, having kids, but still have underpaid earnings and having stressful life 😂 but it’s all worth it cuz i would enjoy the process and maintaining a work-life balance :)
This is very helpful I’m in community college cause im still deciding if I want to be a attorney or a pediatrician so this is helpful to know what I would get into if I were to go into med school
I’d honestly day from third year med school and on you basically are starting your training clinically. It’s really not so bad. Or say internship year after med. that’s just 8 years. Only 6 years of pure classroom learning. Which yeah is a lot compared to no education, but it’s a specialized field and it can be fun and enjoyable if you actually like the content, which I hope you do if you do it as a career
We have a similar general structure, but shorter process in Canada. After high school, which last 5 years, not 6, so at 17 years old, we get to college. College is 2 years for programs leading to university like sciences, so leaving at 19. Then it's medical school, between 4 to 5 years depending on the program, getting a MD at 23-24 years old. Then residency, between 2 to 6 years depending on the medical field, becoming board certified between 25 (family medicine without a specialized Emergency training year) to 30 years old (for a 5 years med school + 6 years residency). Then optional fellowship depending on practice goals between 1-3 years added on top.
In our country we start med school at age 17 .....it takes 12-14 years to reach the post you mentioned above. What I don't like about your or mine country is that they start at very early age.......these kids don't even know what they're getting themselves in. 😢
Some day, you are going to be 50, whether you become a doctor or not. What do you want to be when you are that age? I finished my residency and fellowship at 34 which seemed old at the time. It wasn’t.
Unfortunately, the cost and time commitment are why I’m now leaning away from MD/DO. Nothing is impossible if it’s what you’re truly passionate about, but it definitely de-incentivizes older students and/or female students who want children.
03:32 Imagine being 29 to 33 years old just finishing residency… 😳And that’s if you skip all the extra specializations! It really gives perspective on how dedicated doctors have to be. Props to everyone on this path!

If you are older when you start(26+) then it all comes down to the money. Is it worth it to you to be staring down 40 years or older when you finally start making doctor money? If you will have loads of debt the answer is likely no.
I'm curious if you help people figure out how to pay for it all, too. I'm several years after high school (finally have my house paid off so we have a stable place to stay), and ready to take a deep dive into college. I want to be an anesthesiologist.
