L96A1 - Black Ops Multiplayer Weapon Guide

This time, we're covering the third sniper rifle - the L96A1.
It the only bolt-action rifle in the game, and is unlocked at level 27.
One of the two British weapons in-game, the L96A1 is the land force's designation for the Accuracy International Precision Marksman, or PM.
Adopted in 1982, the L96A1 entered service with the British Armed Forces in 1985.
The Precision Marksman went up against a few other potential rifles in trials, including the Parker Hale M85, PSG-1 and Remington 700.
The PM eventually came out top, and became the sniper rifle employed by the British force, and was later adopted in a variety of roles by other nations.
The original PM design was improved in the Arctic Warfare version of the rifle, named for its ability to operate in a wide variety of climates.
Available in large number of different calibres and configurations, such as the Police variant, or AWP - with its shorter barrel and black furniture - and the Magnum or AWM, designed for more powerful cartridges, the Arctic Warfare range is an adaptable family of rifles suited to a large range of roles.
Although the AW series of rifles are chambered for a variety of calibres, the L96A1 configuration fires the NATO standard 7.62 by 51 millimetre round.
Magazine capacity in-game is on the smaller end, at 5 rounds. Extended mags will take this capacity up to 10.
The L96A1 is the most powerful of all the sniper rifles - boasting the largest one-hit kill area, and dealing more effective damage per shot than any other non-explosive weapon in the game.
A shot anywhere to the head, neck, chest, stomach - or even the upper arms - will result in a one-shot kill.
This means that only a shot to the lower arms or legs will require a follow up shot.
Silenced, the damage profile is identical to the other rifles - you'll need a head or neck shot to kill.
As a bolt action, you will need to chamber a new round manually with every shot - this limits your rate of fire to a maximum of 60 rounds per minute - or one per second.
If you interrupt the weapon cycling, by sprinting or changing weapons, be warned that you will still need to cycle the weapon before you'll be able to fire.
Recoil is very heavy - when firing, the upward kick will cause you to lose sight of your target momentarily. Given that the bolt-action cycling slows your rate of fire, the recoil doesn't harm second shot accuracy, but can hurt in cases where you need to aim two shots in sequence.
Aim speed is the same as all the snipers - at 400 milliseconds, it's important to stay out of close-range gunfights else you'll be bested by more nimble weapons.
Reload is fairly slow, but seldom an issue if you're in a good position and remain mindful of your remaining count - 3.3 seconds is manageable enough.
By default, the L96 comes with a scope attached - with moderate zoom and crosshair reticle, it's good enough for a wide variety of situations - but there are some alternatives.
When employing the sniper rifles, there's no getting around the fact that they're long range weapons - the slow aim time and high level of precision required means that you'll be at a disadvantage in the open.
That's not to say you'll be unable to kill targets at a closer range - with a carefully placed shot you're deadly at any distance - but care should be taken to avoid any direct confrontation.
If you do find yourself on your own, you may be best falling back to a traditional sniper role - preserving longer sightlines through good positioning, and protecting your rear with a claymore.
Playing as a lone sniper does demand patience, else you'll wind up exposing yourself to a gunfight outside your comfort zone and wind up getting killed.
Whichever tactic you prefer, your accuracy is crucial - and ensuring that your first shot is the kill will prove essential, as the crack of a missed shot will serve as quite the motivation for your opponent to target you with urgency.
If you're in a poor position, or too close to your opponent, you won't get a second chance.
The L96A1 is the most powerful sniper weapon in the game, with the highest potential for a one-shot kill.
This means you have to worry less about hitting a target twice, as with most aimed shot's you'll see consistent performance.
Despite this tolerance, it remains important to be accurate - the slow bolt-action is punishing to those who miss their mark.
The sniper rifles don't really lend themselves to spray and pray tactics - so the slow fire rate encourages good habits, and will force you to be accurate to find success.
It's not an easy weapon to use, but there are few weapons as satisfying when things go your way.
With careful positioning, a clear shot and keen aim - you'll be hidden death, allied to the shadows, one shot, one kill.

I get the feel the devs noticed this so in Black Ops 2 you got an achievement for completing a mission set in the past with a weapon from the future. So for instance going into Afghanistan or Panama with an M8 or KSG.

By far the best sniping experience in all CoDs! I mean, they took off the quick-scoping and added skill into the game... Also, the shooting audio quality of the L96A1 in game was really good, for instance, when you heard the capsules falling to the ground after every single shot.
I don't typically use snipers in any FPS... but this thing, this thing... I love.

Hunter 64X I played some COD4 today and the sniping in that game is perfect. Hell, COD4 would beat any COD game in the whole, the possible exceptions being WaW and Black Ops.
I played the multiplayer for Cod4 for the first time and it was fun. First game however was supposed to be a tdm but it was a search and destroy for some reason
Happened to me once in mw2, tdm turned into s&d and everyone had superpowers/superspeed and got max level at the end of the game :/ ....but anyway and WaW sniping was good too, nowadays it's just retarde and the dev's don't care they'll never change the snipers, saw the AW trailer especially the sniper, it's still going downhill.
That's why i watch these video's and wonder what in the fuck happened? the l96 was perfect, don't get me wrong it allowed quickscoping but not any noob could do it, this gun does'nt catch people in the aim assist vortex like the dsr and ballista.
Ahhh, back when snipers didn't have aim assist, and actually took skill to quickscope.
There was no quickscoping in Black Ops

+Young_Sav_Alex I play black ops on pc, with no aim assist, any call of duty game on pc doesn't have aim assist even if the feature is on console or wasn't added to console until later games pc never had aim assist. This made quickscoping more impossible unless you had steady aim, when you try to quickscope it acts like a noscope, steady aim makes the bullet's hit detection more efficient.

its 2017 and I still playing this game. I've been using this sniper a lot lately with the variable zoom and extended mags, and for perks I use lightweight, warlord pro, and marathon. honestly the more you use this gun the better you'll get I've even been quick scoping with it and man any kill with it is satisfying. great video BTW :)

There were more weapons used than just the M16 back then, and remember spec ops get to use a larger variety of weapons than regular infantry. But i have to agree with CaptainPrice943, treyarch should've stuck to weapons available at the time, like the XM177 or SKS.

Ya know, this rifle that he's reviewing holds the record for the longest range kill in history, and I can assure you the British soldier who got that kill did not get it by quickscoping. Sniper rifles, especially those that lack gas/blowback operation are weapons of precision, you need to be sure you're going to hit your target before you fire, and that's why you have a scope.

I love Scout Pro's quicker weapons switch since my standard procedure when sniping is to empty my pistol into the first guy I meet in close range, run over him, and grab his rifle or SMG to use as a much better secondary which I can still get out really quickly.

The l96 has a longer barrel, meaning that the bullets will be traveling faster and be more accurate. Semi/fully automatic fire modes usually use gas from the bullet to cycle the weapon, whereas in a bolt action all the gas is used to push the bullet. The L96 also used green spot ammunition, these bullets would be the first batch made from each mold and while the power difference is minimal, they are much more accurate.

On the Black Ops Zombies map, Call of the Dead, you can get a sniper rifle that shoots grenades called the Scavenger. It's bolt action. Stu said that the L96 was the only bolt-action in the game. I was pointing it out.

Yes it is. To support my point, Just think for a second. If you have one shot to make it count, You rely on accuracy, and you'll be a much better sniper, but if you have multiple shots, you'll just keep shooting, regardless of whether you're going to get a headshot or not.
I just noticed that if you use a Suppressor on snipers like the L96, you can become more accurate since you need to aim for the neck up. Gotta try it.
zzirGrizz is one of the best snipers on youtube and when black ops made sniping so difficult he is one of the few snipers who excelled during the game. other commentators would often say "You ain't Grizz baby" when people would try and snipe them in game. the L96 was Grizz's weapon of choice. Hence the beginning.
Milsim( military simulator) is often utilized in airsoft games where people fight over longer periods of time with high realism

I lived running the suppressor with ghost when I still played it. Headshots all day. It was good fun, and felt so rewarding whenever I got a kill.

@XboxAhoy Given the damage this rifle deals it's more likely the .338 Lapua Magnum round the weapon chambers, the barrel is also the same as the .338 LM fluted with a flash suppressor. The .308 version typically has a smooth barrel with no suppressor. This would not be the first time they mix and match designations and versions. That having been said it does not change the fact that your vids are fudging brilliant (or that I'm right) keep up the great work.

I think he just prefers it. My advice, get scout pro or sleight of hand for this gun. Scout pro makes it so you can swap weapons fast. Which is very usefull for picking up an enemies gun and using it when you know you can't make the shot and the enemy is right in your area. sleight of hand will help with your reload times.
The only thing I didn't like about the Intervention was that it sounded really strange in Multiplayer, but in the Campaign and SpecOps it sounded really freakin awesome

No problem, I just can't understand why people keep making bogus claims about COD. It is a game for fun, not an online firearms dictionary. I am glad there is someone else out with actual knowledge about firearms. Some kids told me that the AKS-74U fires pistol cartridges and is a smg, and they told me that a Famas is the Type-95 and there is no such thing called a QBZ-95. Also note how in mw2 the slides on pistols move 1/4 the way and the hammer never gets charged, so you can't even fire air!!

Although what you state is true in reality, it is hard to disregard the fact that this is a video game. Although black ops encourages long range kills w/ the sniper rifles, the contradictory fact that CoD in general is a close quarter, fast pace game which causes snipers to be left with no other option than to adapt that quickscoping. As for trickshotting or spining around, i agree with you whole-heartedly.
Snipers in WaW had iron sights and the way you can customize your acog sight in MW3 is like one of those sights.
