  • Revealed: Kevin Costner To Earn His Money Back from Horizon The Box Office.
A new report reveals how much Horizon: An American Saga needs to earn in order for Kevin Costner to get his money back. Costner serves as writer, director, producer, and star of Horizon: An American Saga, which chronicles settlers' arduous journey West in the years before and after the American Civil War. The epic Western represents a major passion project for Costner, who previously revealed that he's invested $38 million of his own money into the film.

Kevin to earn his money back for Horizon... that's the best news I've heard so far.
This movie was excellent!!! Too many reviewer haters on this film. I was blown away for three hours. I went in wanting to like this work and I left the theater loving this film. So much patience and skilled attention to detail is all over every frame of this production. This movie is epic! I loved Horizon, Chapter 1. Give it a chance and hopefully you will, too.

And I think there are too many lovers of it. So why are the “haters” wrong and the “lovers” right?

While Westerns aren't everyone's "thing," I feel the tepid response to Horizon has more to do with an audience that isn't used to anything but fast, flashy stories told primarily for children. So gorged on "junk cinema," many sadly don't know how to process anything else... and... it takes some cajones to release one story in four parts (without a suitable, cathartic ending in Act I a la something like Star Wars A New Hope). As a director Costner is very good (I even love The Postman), but we'll see by Horizon's part 4 (end of Act 3) whether Costner is just as good a writer / crafter of stories.

@@kaipacifica1289 Since I love The Postman, westerns, and 3 hour movies worthy of that time - how do you account for my view of Horizon being completely forgettable regardless of its length?
More than ever - people want people and things to be something they are not. You used the short attention span of the audience to rationalize why they don’t care much for the movie (so you can more easily dismiss their criticism).
Have you even the considered the possibility that maybe it’s just not as good as you think it is?

@@kaipacifica1289 Then don’t. You could have just ignored my comment entirely, but you opted to take the time to say you’re going to ignore it. Why did you even show up to say anything in the first place? After all - based on your standard - no one should consider anything (including your comment). So what’s the point? Or did you just want to be Liked by people who share your views (never needing to reconsider anything since you’re reinforced by those who feel the same)?

I can't say that I absolutely know this for a fact to be true, but I do feel reasonably confident in saying in response to this video's question about whether Costner's initial investment also included part 2?...to be a very likely YES. Anyone who actually went to see the movie, as I did, knows that the last several minutes of the movie before credits start rolling are essentially preview scenes of what is coming, because NONE of what is being shown in those last few minutes is from the first 2 & 3/4 hours of the first part...which means that those scenes have already been filmed, and thus paid for...simple deductive logic. This movie is NOT for people who can't sit still for more than two hours, and/or who are used to instant gratification movies...NOT how it's set up or obviously intended. So stay home if you're a antsy pants! Otherwise, if you love western sagas...this one is good and I'm looking forward to part 2 in August!

Have you been in a Target or Best Buy lately? People don't buy DVDs anymore, that why they're pulling them from the shelves. Streamers like Netflix or Amazon determine the price they'll pay for a movie's streaming rights based off it's Box Office numbers. Since Horizon flopped so badly with only $22 million so far, they won't offer much, $4 to $5 million at most. Paramount+ would've been the ideal spot before Kevin burned that bridge ...and fan base.

You don’t describe how he will earn his money back though. It depends on box office and streaming revenue

  • @daveclark8337

Stop it. Kevin has at least $140 million into the production and marketing of Horizon. After 10 Days during a really long Holiday weekend, Horizon has only sold $22 million worth of tickets and has already dropped down #6 at the box charts. It will probably finish around $30 million total.
The theaters keep 50% of that and Warner Bros gets 8% gross for distribution. Netflix, Max or Prime will offer him $5 Mil for Streaming rights. So Horizon is Still $100 million in the Negative.

@@fredofromchicago777 Kevin's "private investors" put up the first $100 million. And then Kevin paid for all the overages once that money ran out, which was easily $40 mill. by his own admission. Then they had TV ads running 24/7 on every channel in May and June. Spending $50 Mil to Market a movie nowadays is on the low end.

Either A) You didn’t see it and you’re just saying things you’ve heard. B) You like action every 5 minutes with a little attention span, C) You don’t understand that it’s the 1st Act of a 4 part story. I loved it. Costner’s character shows you that a man is a man when he makes the decision to do the right thing and protect that woman. The boy saw two traumatic events at the beginning and end and he’s trying to decide what kind of man he wants to be. He’s being pulled into tow different directions (let it go and move on, or hold on to a grudge and become bitter the rest of his life), the Wagon Train is about vanity vs a community trying to survive. The hard choices. But it’s okay, you have to have an actual attention span and some intelligence to understand what you’re watching.

@@jasonavery Technically I didn’t see the whole thing so you’re right. My wife and I left at 2 hours and 45 minutes. I have a long list of everything that was wrong with that movie. We went in hopes of a great western. Guess our standards are higher than yours.

@@bboyscam9727 I have a feeling if you solely watched Part 1 of Lonesome Dove you may have come away feeling similar... obviously, the difference here is that Costner's work feels more akin to How the West Was Won than Lonesome Dove. Still, this is just the first act -- the set-up -- for the story. The montage sequence is showing you that act II -- the main conflict -- is coming. In short, this series of films is structured like a grand novel (ie Michener, Clavell, etc.) that's taken the first hundred pages to set up the characters and world they inhabit (Act I) and the next hundred pages are rising, directed conflict (Act II). Many aren't used to this kind of deliberate storytelling outside of TV miniseries, but I think it's audacious and potentially meant (in Costner's mind) to be the sum of his life's work in cinema. Now, will Horizon be AMAZING when all 3 Acts (Act II is broken into 2 parts) have been assembled into one grand film? We'll see... but again, even the idea of this coming out in a cinema dominated by short-attention span Marvel movies, horror films, and childish fantasies is audacious... and... IMHO deserves respect. I'm sorry you did not care for it, but I wonder what you thought it would be?
