    I was in a tech store a few weeks ago replacing my laptop that broke after 8 years of use. While I waited for staff to grab my new laptop from the back another member of staff noticed my iphone 5 in my hand and offered an upgrade. I told him thanks but it still works and I don't replace things until I actually need to. He looked at me like I'm crazy, looked at his colleague and they tried not to laugh. They were polite in the end but those expressions suggested I'm the weird one.

    Bill Maher makes a very good point. Public companies and the stock market feeds into the culture of greed, even though the companies are already very profitable, even if they are past their peak. But investors want something for nothing; they want a big and quick return on their investment. We need a new institution for public companies that better rewards long term growth instead of short term quarterly growth. With public companies, many investors don't see $621 billion in profit, they see a couple of cents increase in their share price, and that is the problem. Public loans, which are basically what bonds are, may be a much better alternative for raising capital than public ownership.

      Very interesting Dead Parroting, perhaps there can even be a sub-bubble there in some way. Just how much can firms push hard for short term gains until everything collapses. short term gains/instant gratification is like crack. Actually, I think they are both defined the same way lol. Back to being serious, They are becoming or have become the next sub-prime, the next "mover and shaker" factor. But let me ask you this, let me ask everyone on youtube - We saw the housing bubble, we saw the Great Depression, we can probably see another stock market crash with how things are going... cant we as a nation, as rational people, as fathers/mothers/sons/daughters/etc. admit for once that capitalism like any other political ISM is not perfect? The US has done a fine job in demonizing other forms and putting a halo over capitalism.

    Oh yeah, if you've ever worked in retail, you've come across this. The annual expectation is last year, plus 5%. It's ridiculous, cause it's been the standard since at least 2000, when I got out of the Navy. In Navy, the standards are set, and that's it. Did you pass regs this year? Yes? Well, they're going to be pretty much the same next year, and the year after as well. There's just no possible way to maintain infinite growth. If you tried that with your lungs, they would sieze and/or rupture. Businesses have to expand as well as retract for an honestly healthy economy.

      djancak No, not "infinite returns."
      They expect SOME returns.
      If the company doesn't grow valuation, the investor literally makes no money aside from tiny dividends, which some companys don't even give.

    • @philliph8991
      @philliph8991 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      small dividends are fine. thats how healthy business works. Expecting massive returns each year is damaging to the economy and to apple as a whole. They put the company in accelerated/hyper growth and then need the dividends to constantly rise in order to sustain this hyper growth. Eventually, it will fail. these companies rise and fall quickly. If just a few businesses did this, it wouldnt be an issue, but this has become the norm for not only retail, but now mortgage companies and banks. if you cant see the danger in this bubble economy, you are going to be quite surprised when it crumbles.

    • @RaitoYagami88

Capitalism worked for the West before when we were expanding and there were still things to overcome. But now it really isn't that necessary. We can back down on it a little, and start creating safety nets for the poor and disenfranchised.

      Thank you. It's a fun geezer question to ask at the electronics store, though, just for the salesperson's reaction and response. ;-)) During my 71 years, I've made each technological stereo leap and have about 20K ablums, from 78 shellac to flash drives that hold the equivalent of two vinyl tons. Having done that, I can't bring myself to enter the contrived marketing race for a "new and improved" phone. My land line and answering machine works just fine to filter out Bozos and boiler room calls.

    the reason for this economy on steroids is to be found in the manipulated monetary policy that is used to create artificial inflation instead of its natural scope of a worth-keeper, in other words the primary goal of money should be the store of value, instead nowadays central banks look out for growth at any price.. central banks create artificial inflation by lowering interest rates to almost 0 and its through this inflation that the top 1% gets favorized, wealth its absorbed from the lower classes and is effectively taken out of the economy and transferred to financial paradises.. its pretty simple, but 99,9% people dont get it. its a shame

    We've got to stop this nonsense at the level of our own everyday behavior; you can't let businesses tell you that you need a bigger car, candy bars to take a break, or which day of the year to buy your wife flowers. If you walk into the grocery store with a list that says to buy one jar of jam and you leave with 5 because there was a 'sale', you're part of the problem. You don't need to have more types of every item to the point that you have to buy/run a second fridge, and, in the era of using computers to do logistics, there's practically no such thing as a 'sale'. Those are fake; it's called high-low pricing and it's a necessary trick because CEO's who try to respect their customers' intelligence by not using high-low pricing will kill sales numbers and get fired (see Ron Johnson's tenure at J.C. Penney)

    • @PyrrhoVonHyperborea
      @PyrrhoVonHyperborea 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually: growth *is* the problem. Because it ruins our planet! - humanity and it's capacities are big enough; rather reverse that trend, and re-shrink to a healthy, less cancerous size, so nature has a chance again to replenish itself!

    • @familyaccount6491
      @familyaccount6491 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PyrrhoVonHyperborea there is *no* problem with growth. We need it to advance technologically and become a Type 2 civilization, in order to get closer to answering the ultimate questions. The problem is we are unable to control the rate of growth of the different fields of technology based on our current capitalistic scheme. Not to mention that it only generates output to mostly useless products rather than focussing on world changing ones. We are wasting way too much resources per product created. Essentially, I'm afraid it is too late for this planet. We only have two options now: make the best of our remaining resources to establish an extraterrestrial colony, or watch as humanity perishes from its own excesses.

    The big problem with focus on short term growth is that it hinders long term growth and real innovation. Because innovating and creating new technology can take a long time. Computers and the internet didn't just magically appear out of nowhere. It took decades of research into semiconductors before people were able to build the first PC.
    Heck, when the field of quantum mechanics was in its infancy, people had no idea that it could even have practical applications. If people had only been focused on short term profit, universities, governments, and businesses would have never funded research. And we wouldn't have computers or MRI's or cell phones or GPS, etc.

    I hear that bill. I still have my LG G3 and it works just fine. It also has a removable battery, expandable storage and a mini jack. These features should be considered by all to be mandatory features unless you like swapping out your phone for a refurb every time the battery goes bad, or having to depend on a cloud you have no control over for extra storage, or replacing lost dongles for $8 that cost 50 cents to make. When I think iPhone and Galaxy the term that comes to mind now is "Suckers".
