Congratulations - on taking your first step into the world of Ren. I'm 73, used to be a studio engineer, and I can honestly say I've never come across any artist that has so shaken me to the core. His lyrics and composition, musicianship and voice, and fearless creativity across multiple genres of music is I believe, something quite unique. Should you choose to dive into his current music and huge back catalogue, I'm confident you'll not be disappointed. As a vocalist, you might enjoy "Chalk Outlines", a gentle duet of desperation, with his friend, the wonderful Chinchilla. (Perhaps worth noting - the song, "Hi Ren" was a single take, with no audio edits - as are many of his performances)
Truth. He has taken over my Cornell and Vedder spots. Prince... ... was a diff beast so I can only say that Ren, in my 5th decade on this rock, is easily the most exciting artist with such a great crew and dedication to the product... I am grateful to have lived in the time to see his rise and success.
I'm curious what you think of his production skills for videos like this or even Big Push recordings. His brain seems to be able to figure out how to capture exactly what is needed from an improvised setup. I'm guessing he hasn't touched a $50,000 mixing console, but out produces people who call themselves high dollar experts in the field.
Ren is self taught but he does come from a musical background. His father specialises in playing medieval music on the Lute and storytelling and you'll hear that wandering minstrel style a lot with Ren, particularly the tales of Jenny and Screech. His mum is a vocal coach and story writer. He is an incredible talent, very versatile and creative. Loved your reaction, subbed, greetings from the UK 🇬🇧
Very well done. I love seeing newbies get gobsmacked by Ren. He has so much range. He raps like a master. Ballads will put you on the floor with tears. Vocal range is massive. Duets are impeccable. Most videos are one-takes. To get a better view of his vocal range, I’d watch “Back on 74” or “How to be Me”. So much more. Please keep reacting to his stuff. You won’t be disappointed.
Im so happy to see a new reactor to Ren. Its as if I get to hear Ren for the first time again through you. If you want to hear a vocal performance your going to love - Back on 74 -
I've listened to "Hi Ren" maybe a dozen times and each time I end up with tears rolling down my cheeks. How much pain must someone endure to write something like this? Not only that, but how intelligent must one be to communicate the depth of his feelings so well? Ren lays it all out for us, and I love it. Thank you, Freya, for your excellent reaction. I enjoyed it.
There are no mistakes in his music! Just Happy Accidents! 😊 He doesnt worry about a missed note, muted string, being a little sharp or flat! As a hard rock guitarist of 40 years, thousands of shows, a self proclaimed perfectionist... BR (Before Ren!) Id have Never allowed anything but perfection to be captured for replay without correcting it! Mad Respect to Ren!!!
Ren self taught piano, cello and guitar with his own idiosyncratic finger placement on piano runs and unconventional guitar picking. He composes in classical, reggae, rap, and his own unique song structures. He also does midblowingly beautiful covers of other artist’s songs, usually recorded on other people’s cell phones as he busked in Brighton. He performs, acts, post mixes and produces his own songs, plus freely collaborates with multiple other extraordinary singers he’s found or have found him. If you want to experience his complete range and have your life changed, start tracking down one song a week or a fortnight at least. Some of his most famous works (that don’t even showcase his range) are Money Game 1, 2 & 3 plus Money Ties. You need the Lyric video for Money Game 2, not the teaser where he’s on the beach. The Tales of Jenny+Screech & Violet’s Tale, which need to be listened to together in order as a tryptich. Back In 74/Message In A Bottle. Su!cide. Blind Eyed with Sam Tompkins Featuring Angry Parking Lot Attrndant, in which Ren finishes the one take, one shot song after snapping two of his guitar strings and adjusting. Troubles. I wish I could find more of his classical piano, I’ve only found one extremely short recording of his personal classical piano outside of Money Game 3 so far. Oh, and you HAVE to watch Chalk Outlines (live) with Chinchilla, and How to Be Me (live) with her also, they are extraordinary, and a lot of meat for a vocalist to dig into with the both of them.
He’s got a typical blue collar South East English accent. This is what Sinead O’Connor posted after watching this: “Holy motherfuckin SHIT! Someone just showed me this at the weekend. I really enjoyed your reaction, especially the way that you conveyed your responses silently. A gesture or facial expression can often say more than 100 words. The one thing that is consistent about Ren's music is that it will be authentic and surprising. You never know what you are going to get. He is so versatile and endlessly creative, a real genre-busiting original. Subbed. Many thanks.
Personally I call it down to earth, humbled and helpful. He helps us not to feel so alone and that many others are going through doubts about their self worth and internal battles.
2:41 when you said it’s “very unique”, I wa like, strap yourself in, he hasn’t even started yet 😂 In my humble opinion, what makes this performance genuinely unique is that’s one take, start to finish, filmed live, with zero pitch correction and minimal post production. Listening to you comments at the end about having both good and evil inside ourselves... You and Ren are going to get on just fine. Enjoy your journey of Ren enlightenment
Every time. Every time for the millionth time. Every time this boy makes me cry. Thank you Ren for saying the things many of us cannot find the strength to put out into the world.
Glad you discovered Ren. He is an amazing musician, singer, rapper, storyteller and seems like just an amazing human being. If you dig into some of his back catalogue you are in for a absolute treat and a lot of surprises.
And it's even a bit tied back to this video eventually... when she eventually sees what Ren was talking about wish Sea Shells. It took me a few weeks to get to that song being referenced and then I had an a ha moment about what it meant here.
I hope you check out more of Ren, he’s a student of music and life, and he uses his voice like a tool. He is so emotive, he sings beautifully and his rap is unique. He’s a one off musician and human
Welcome to the Renaissance. The Tales of Jenny and Screech are gonna do it too. It's a 3 part-er, but you have to see them together, and in order. There's a convenient ~14 minute run time, seamless compilation on his channel. A comparison to Shakespeare is not at all hyperbole. Prolly the next couple i'd recommend for you would be Ren and Sam Thompkins' Earned it/ Man's World/ Fallin, then prolly Ren and Chinchilla's How To Be Me. All are Live one takes. You're gonna love it all, and there is a lot. I hope you weren't too dedicated to your current favorite artists, if so, i'm sorry for your loss. Enjoy!
There are so many things in this work, one of the more subtle ones, and one of my favorites, is how he places a pause before the word “die”, and lowers his head, when he says “I choose if you die.” He has many other brilliant pieces, but “Hi Ren” really is its own thing, uniquely powerful and direct among his videos. It is the cornerstone of Ren World.
Welcome to Ren. He is the Shakespeare of modern music and a once-in-an-era artist. He never misses and does EVERY genre. (He's also reaction and vocal coach gold) Enjoy the ride.
Ren is therapy for so many from one song he helps so many people open up in ways therapists struggle to do in person. First time i watched Hi Ren i had a panic attack but thought i needed to watch it again so i watched someone reacting to it that was the best thing i could do i have watched many times since. One thing i think about this song is it needs to be seen by every one even in schools after a certain age, because how many children kill themselves because of the negativity towards them from nasty comments and bullying to them believing what is said. I went through hell, bullied all through school to the point i attempted suicide twice, and to many issues in my life since then I am a recovering alcoholic 14 years clean I suffer PTSD and other health issues so the majority of bad days over good is high, if this bullying had been dealt with i may have had a reasonable life not the existence i have to deal with now Fun fact Ren is self taught on guitar he learned by slowing youtube video's down and copying them
Ren to me, is a book with a blank cover. Open the book and the pages transport you to a time, place and emotion of Rens choosing. I'm just an old fart, but Ren has touched and helped me these last couple years. God bless and keep Ren among us, we need him
Just a man with a guitar and an idea. He brought that idea to life by rapping, singing, playing guitar and acting in a live performance that could humble a full production show. Ren is no one trick pony either. Self taught in singing and multiple instruments and an amazing story teller. Enjoy.
I've been watching a *lot* of reactions for a few months now, and it's only recently that I (not a musician) have been able to step back a little and see how simple (as in uncomplicated, not like *I* could ever hope play them) many of his his guitar parts are, but how perfectly they fit with and augment the singing.
Welcome to the world of Ren.. Renegade here. I'm 63 yo and was a professional Trombonist at a pretty high level for over 40 years. Blessed to play with some very talented and big named stars. I have never heard and met a generational genius talent like Ren. He has changed my life with his artistry! Check out I shot the sheriff, road to Zion live Busking video. Must be the red suspenders version... lol Trust me! Enjoy the Rabit hole.
Ren is one of a kind. Loved watching your reaction and your face was showing everything ❤ You need to dive deep with Ren, he's got soooo much to offer 💚
Welcome welcome 🙏🏻 ETA - This was so great to watch. I adore watching people go through the stages of REN. And the moment of realization and awe at the relevance of what they are seeing
welcome new RENegade sister! this was an awesome reaction to my favourite artist. thanks so much for sharing it, very happily subscribed in anticipation of more Ren reactions, much love to you and yours🙂🙂🙂❤❤❤
Ren is absolutely unique and has so much more to explore. Andrew Lloyd Webber said about Ren, "is one of the most unique songwriters and storytellers I've seen in recent time."
Nice job. REN is the king of live, one takes. If you like this, you”ll appreciate REN’s Money Game(s) & the Jenny & Skreech trilogy. Keep it up - cheers!
I will never tire of watching someones first introduction to the genius that is Ren. Welcome to the REN-gades Freya. You are about to enter into a very long, deep and winding journey that is exploring Ren's music and artistry. He is in my opinion a very unique artist with many strings to his bow. Many have referred to him as a modern day bard and they are not wrong. His storytelling ability is phenomenal. Enjoy, might I suggest a box of tissues often within reach....just in case.
As a very long term thankful Renegade, welcome to our very special community,as you are about to discover,. your misconception about Ren being wheelchair reliant, inadvertently led to one of my favourite reactions to Ren rising up and standing on his own two feet (Beautiful). Next up for you from Rens catalogue must be The trilogy "The tales of Jenny and Screech ', I'm sure this suggestion will appear in comments many times..I look forward to seeing your reaction to this and many, many more!❤ Ps I have subscribed as I am sure many Of my fellow Renegades will.Best wishes❤
Loved this reaction! Every time it’s “wow”, long pause “I’m speechless”. It is too entertaining to watch so many emotions and thoughts washing across their faces.
Ren is the most versatile and unique artist on this planet. Well spotted with the Welsh accent. I really love watching professionals react to Ren, please consider " Chalk Outlines LIVE with Chinchilla " as the next one. PS I love your t-shirt, I was hoping it was your merchandising, but couldn't find it!
Welcome to ren world He has a lot of masterpieces like this one, and each one is different than the other He is very talented he is his own genre, he touches any genre and bends it. So next masterpiece by ren I definitely recommend the trilogy of jenny and screech the full 13 minutes version And a back story about hi ren: Ren is an independent artist he does his videos with minimum budget and A lot of his music videos are in one take and live, so Usually he records about 20 takes and chooses the best one, but specifically for this one " hi ren" they managed to take only 4 takes because they were recording in this basement without permission, and when the owner of the building found them asked them to leave immediately. But they begged him to let them record. And he gave them only 30 minutes and they must leave. So in this 30 minutes they were able to record only 4 takes and it turned out to be this masterpiece. The video is a mix of the 4 takes but the audio is all from one of the 4 takes. How ever i highly recommend the trilogy of jenny and screech it is 3 stories in one 13 minutes video and each one of the stories are in one take and live. it is again very different and unique you will be blown away He has a lot of masterpieces but usually after hi ren the trilogy is the best to watch then " sick boi" is another very diffrent masterpiece of his where he talks about his struggles during the time that he was sick and suffering with his disease and how medical industry treated him
Oh Freya, now you have found the One. God sent that tick to him because true genius is often tortured. He is an excellent singer, fantastic rapper and just storyteller. Real student of music, self-taught. Please keep going down this rabbit hole, may I suggest you branch out to his singing, he did a lot of busking both with a band he was in, The Big Push and he has a lot of great collabs with others. Long time subscribers, I'm a huge Katrina Velarde fan, and I really hope we can get your perspective on so many things he did. Try a little Nina Simone from him and his band busking. Wade in the Water/Nina Simone (Feeling Good)/ Trouble So Hard or if you want a little Reggae, Who Shot the Sherriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop (red suspenders version) You will get a lot of suggestions, from the Renegades, who will love you. Tales of Jenny and Screech is the best "Bard cord" you will ever see but I'm trying to show off his singing more. Chalk Outlines and Hard to Be Me with Chinchilla are heavy emotional duets, well worth seeing. Let me stop for now, Ren has so much to experience I could go on forever.
Accent wise ...Ren was raised on the relatively large rural island of Anglesey, situated just off the north coast of Wales. He moved to Bath (SW England) to study and start a band, but caught undiagnosed Lyme disease. He moved to Brighton (costal town directly south of London) and busked and worked with several different artist, plus solo work.
Oh yes, another Renegade in the making.. REN is a master of his own style, he raps with the best of them, storytelling is a whole different level and his genre is everything. He is not doing to well now but he’s still releasing. Also in a band and does busking on the streets of Brighton. Band is “The Big Push”. Might wanna check out Tales of Jenny and screech and Violet. Gonna lose your mind. Your reaction was great, loved you just went and didn’t stop many times til the end. Keep em coming and us Renegades will show ya love. Peace. FL USA
You, being a vocal coach, would probably love Ren's spontaneous stream jam. It's an excerpt from a Twitch stream he did, but you get to see him play many different songs, off the cuff, amd see a bit of his personality. Ren is an alien.....
Great reaction. You will get a ton of recommendations of other Ren songs to react to. You can't go wrong with any of the choices ... and if you do go down the Rabbit hole you will discover the love and support of a whole community! Sending love from California from just one of the many Renegade's who will sub for the rollercoaster. Welcome!
Ren has such range! Ill give you 3 that feature his incredible singing voice: Fred Again Mashup Back on 74/Message in a Bottle, Chalk Outlines live with Chinchilla The busking videos qith his old band The Big Push,Wade in the Water/Trouble so Hard/Nina Simone. Is a showcase of vocal freedom . I subbed in hopes of more Ren. He has become the voice if the voiceless ,silenced by chronic mental and physical illness. I love the delight on your face. Thank you!
It's definitely a strange phenomenon, but it's watching people (often professional musicians, rappers, singers, producers, etc) realize how limited their previous thinking about music has been. Or the people who watch it from a mental health perspective realize these are concepts nobody's ever successfully conveyed artistically before. Either way, if the reactor is coming in truly cold, it's a revelation being viewed by us.

In the years I've been watching people react to this masterpiece, I think 'wow' has been a unanimous first response. Rightfully so.
For the algorithm. 😉❤️
Glad you discovered Ren. He is an amazing musician, singer, rapper, storyteller and seems like just an amazing human being. If you dig into some of his back catalogue you are in for a absolute treat and a lot of surprises.
You really don't appreciate the Pandora's box that you have just opened. This isn't a rabbit hole it's a whole warren!
...and the Rabbit's name is Johnson....(I believe).
Enjoy!
Yep, what you said! 😁
💞🐷
haha, that really cracked me up, "..sorry for your loss". Possibly true here, defiinitely true for so many of us. RIP, whomever that was.
There are so many things in this work, one of the more subtle ones, and one of my favorites, is how he places a pause before the word “die”, and lowers his head, when he says “I choose if you die.”
He has many other brilliant pieces, but “Hi Ren” really is its own thing, uniquely powerful and direct among his videos. It is the cornerstone of Ren World.
He is simply a Genius. All I've got.😎😎
Welcome to Ren. He is the Shakespeare of modern music and a once-in-an-era artist. He never misses and does EVERY genre. (He's also reaction and vocal coach gold) Enjoy the ride.
Subbbed and liked. Enjoy the Ren rollercoaster! It’s a great ride!!!!
Ren is therapy for so many from one song he helps so many people open up in ways therapists struggle to do in person.
First time i watched Hi Ren i had a panic attack but thought i needed to watch it again so i watched someone reacting to it
that was the best thing i could do i have watched many times since. One thing i think about this song is it needs to be seen
by every one even in schools after a certain age, because how many children kill themselves because of the negativity
towards them from nasty comments and bullying to them believing what is said. I went through hell, bullied all through
school to the point i attempted suicide twice, and to many issues in my life since then I am a recovering alcoholic 14 years
clean I suffer PTSD and other health issues so the majority of bad days over good is high, if this bullying had been dealt
with i may have had a reasonable life not the existence i have to deal with now
Fun fact Ren is self taught on guitar he learned by slowing youtube video's down and copying them
Ren to me, is a book with a blank cover. Open the book and the pages transport you to a time, place and emotion of Rens choosing. I'm just an old fart, but Ren has touched and helped me these last couple years. God bless and keep Ren among us, we need him
8:58 A nervous laughter is the most appropriate reaction. Going blind into this video is the best thing to do.
If you really want to hear Ren sing, Plz check out the following: Chalk outlines live version, Back on 74/message in a bottle, lastly h was in a band called the Big Push.... Check out I shot the sheriff, road to Zion live Busking video. Must be the red suspenders version... lol Trust me! Enjoy the Rabit hole.
Welcome to the Ren hole. Buckle up, it’s a wild ride. I can’t wait to see you react to the songs where he really shows off his vocal capabilities.
Ren is from Wales, but he speaks a very clear english, which is good to understand.
Ren is one of a kind. Loved watching your reaction and your face was showing everything ❤
You need to dive deep with Ren, he's got soooo much to offer 💚
You have such animated facial expressions; it made for an really fun reaction to watch.
Welcome welcome 🙏🏻
ETA - This was so great to watch.
Yep, Buckle up and get ready for the musical ride of your life if you go down Rens musical rabbit hole. Nothing else like it.
Loved your insights into Ren...thank you!
Thanks for reacting to Ren. He has drawn me out of darkness. His relatability and vulnerability is so powerful and awe inspiring. Great breakdown.
Well you’re now gonna have 10K people going on this journey with you!!!
Enjoyed! Looking forward to more Ren!
Welcome to the wonderful world of ren, where you can always expect the unexpected 😊💜
Thank you for your insightful and thoughtful reactions!
Great reaction. Ren is from the UK. The most versatile Artist out there - no genre just ren. Wow! indeed.
Still love coming across new reactions to this!
I'm going to subscribe in hopes for another Ren reaction please. He plays a lot of genres and styles, I really would enjoy seeing you discover him.
Welcome to ren world
He has a lot of masterpieces like this one, and each one is different than the other
He is very talented he is his own genre, he touches any genre and bends it.
So next masterpiece by ren
I definitely recommend the trilogy of jenny and screech the full 13 minutes version
And a back story about hi ren:
Ren is an independent artist he does his videos with minimum budget and A lot of his music videos are in one take and live, so Usually he records about 20 takes and chooses the best one, but specifically for this one " hi ren" they managed to take only 4 takes because they were recording in this basement without permission, and when the owner of the building found them asked them to leave immediately. But they begged him to let them record. And he gave them only 30 minutes and they must leave. So in this 30 minutes they were able to record only 4 takes and it turned out to be this masterpiece. The video is a mix of the 4 takes but the audio is all from one of the 4 takes.
How ever i highly recommend the trilogy of jenny and screech it is 3 stories in one 13 minutes video and each one of the stories are in one take and live. it is again very different and unique you will be blown away
He has a lot of masterpieces but usually after hi ren the trilogy is the best to watch then " sick boi" is another very diffrent masterpiece of his where he talks about his struggles during the time that he was sick and suffering with his disease and how medical industry treated him
Subscribed for more Ren and one of the bands Ren was in called the big push ❤❤❤
Loved the rawness of this reaction. Twice I had to laugh as I did the exact same “phwoooooo” after the song and after the spoken section.
Welcome to the family!
Use of the Devils tritone was intentional! As were the half steps!
My current obsession is watching reactors and how they respond to Ren's falsetto at the beginning 😄 Brilliant! I loved your thoughts and insights.
Welcome to the Ren rabbit hole! 😊
King of the One Takes our Boi REN. Truly a once in a generation ARTiiiiiiiiist like no other 🤯🎶🎵🔥🙏💪🐝🍀🇬🇧🦄🦄
Greatest talent of our times! Music is finally back! Check out ' the tale of Jenny and Screech and Violet'!
Welcome ,renegade ❤
Oh Freya, now you have found the One. God sent that tick to him because true genius is often tortured.
He is an excellent singer, fantastic rapper and just storyteller. Real student of music, self-taught.
Please keep going down this rabbit hole, may I suggest you branch out to his singing, he did a lot of busking both with a band he was in, The Big Push and he has a lot of great collabs with others.
Long time subscribers, I'm a huge Katrina Velarde fan, and I really hope we can get your perspective on so many things he did. Try a little Nina Simone from him and his band busking. Wade in the Water/Nina Simone (Feeling Good)/ Trouble So Hard or if you want a little Reggae, Who Shot the Sherriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop (red suspenders version)
You will get a lot of suggestions, from the Renegades, who will love you. Tales of Jenny and Screech is the best "Bard cord" you will ever see but I'm trying to show off his singing more. Chalk Outlines and Hard to Be Me with Chinchilla are heavy emotional duets, well worth seeing.
Let me stop for now, Ren has so much to experience I could go on forever.
all great suggestions, a couple more excellent melodic tunes: Fred Again Mashup, and Back on 74/ Message In A Bottle retake.
I started the Ren rabbit hole 1.5 years ago. Have fun!!!
The really amazing thing about this video is he shot it all in 1 take from start to finish
Extraordinary masterpiece is what it is, and should be part of every high school curriculum.
Enjoyed your reaction to Ren
Welcome!
I enjoyed your take. :)
Great reaction . Looking forward to you getting your mind blown by ren more
Another RENagade??? Welcome to the family!! Great reaction!!! 🤘🏼🎶
Ren has such range! Ill give you 3 that feature his incredible singing voice:
Fred Again Mashup
Back on 74/Message in a Bottle,
Chalk Outlines live with Chinchilla
The busking videos qith his old band The Big Push,Wade in the Water/Trouble so Hard/Nina Simone.
Is a showcase of vocal freedom .
I subbed in hopes of more Ren. He has become the voice if the voiceless ,silenced by chronic mental and physical illness.
I love the delight on your face. Thank you!
Great reaction....prepare to be blown away again, again and again.
Welcome to the Ren juggernaut - buckle up Freya - it's a wild & always surprising ride. Cheers from an outback RENegade 🦘🦘🦘
I'm honestly hooked on Ren reactions.
He is a modern day Bard. Every song is storytelling accompanied by brilliant music. It is generational music
Self-taught guitar. What you saw was the best of four one-take run-throughs! 😳
I loved your reaction ❤ Ren is something else 😊x
This was a lovley reaction, thank you!
