Great reaction 👍❤ What a perfect start into a channel about Musik and Psychology. Ren has a lot of songs about (mental) health. And welcome to the world of Ren. A roller coaster ride through emotions, wisdom, musical genius and genres. Ren Eryn Gill is a multi-instrumentalist and producer. He sings, raps and writes his songs, lyrics and video scripts himself. He was born in Wales in 1990. He moved to Brighton in 2013 and did a lot of busking. He studied music performance at Bath Spa University. In 2009 he became seriously ill and had difficulty attending lectures. In 2010, he was signed to Sony Records. However, as his health continued to deteriorate, he had to terminate the contract. Today he is an independent artist. In October 2023, his album "Sick Boi" was number one in the British album charts. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led to him suffering from psychosis. It was not until seven years later that a doctor in Belgium finally diagnosed him with autoimmunity and Lyme disease, which led to brain, organ and joint damage as well as PTSD. After stem cell therapy in the United States, his health improved considerably. However, he continues to suffer greatly from his illnesses. In early 2023, he went to Canada for about a year and a half for treatment. In July 2024 he came back to the UK to play hist first concert after five years (look for The Secret Garden Party). At the end of September 2024, Ren posted that the treatment for Lyme disease co-infection Bartonella had not worked. Eight months of grueling treatment with various antibiotics had not led to success. Then the symptoms of Bartonella came back. But unfortunately, things got even worse: During a video shoot, he had an autoimmune flare and experienced severe pain. He had to be taken to the emergency room. He lost vision in one eye for three days. He started recovering in the UK and went back to Canada for further treatment in October 2024. At the beginning of November he posted that lots of his symptoms came back and that he's mostly bedbound again. Nonetheless he just released the title track of his new album Slaughter House although I don't think he got the album finished before everything went wild again. On his RenMakesStuff channel you can find an autobiographical reading about his story in eight chapters. From the end of his best friend Joe, over becoming ill, getting and losing the contract with Sony, via his odyssey through various diagnosis and attempts of treatments to becoming at least better after his stem cell treatment. Absolutely worth watching. You will understand his songs even better afterwards and they become even more intense. Very personal and emotional videos. His song Troubles is a kind of condensation of these readings.
I appreciate your perspective! You've helped me see things about this video I hadn't considered on my own, like the symbolism of the lights in the foreground and background. And I've watched this countless times lol. Great breakdown
That was a great reaction! Happy to be here for your first and so glad you chose this song! I'd love to see your reaction to Ren's Suic!de song. It touched me deeply and might just be my favorite song of his at this point.
Awesome video! I've watched several mental health professionals react to this video and yours was one of the best. If you decide to do more of these I am here for it!
Great reaction Olympia, very insightful. I hope you will do more Ren reactions. The Tales of Jenny and Screech (and Violet) is a good next one. Cheers!👍

This was a great intro to you and fantastic breakdown. One of my favorites of all time! I want to give one tip if you do further reactions. With the arrow keys on the keyboard as a default you can usually just hit the left arrow to go back 5 seconds, two clicks are usually 10 seconds. You're intellect, compassion, and knowledge shines through. However, I'd bet that most of your audience has watched ''Hi Ren'' 20, 30, 50 or more times. And we already understand the production techniques, lighting, voice modulations, etc. I believe most of us click on these vids to hear new ''reactions'' - but, not so much ''analysis''. We seek more of a gut reaction than a critique. How did ''Hi Ren'' make you FEEL. To me, the most compelling moments were when Ren nearly made you cry (like it has for the rest of us). BTW, Liked and subscribed.
Ren did a series of Chapters recently to give his story. They are very personal and show what he had gone through up to that point. Chapter 1 th-cam.com/video/hQP7YoQdF3Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sJSEKRXqF0PYns5C
@ Some people choose to react or watch it themselves for context. Personally I don’t watch reactions to these, but each to their own. Only word of warning is the chapters may end in a song, so you may want to be ready to stop so you can do a reaction to the song at some point.
Totally incidental, but I love the name Olympia. I attended college in Olympia Washington and loved the name even before that. It has good vibes. You got a lucky pick from your parents. Great reaction, new sub 👍🏻
Wow, what I happened to notice is you really don't have a big channel BUT... People REALLY want to hear how you feel after watching/reacting to this.... I don't know what you call it. Ren's Gift to humanity reminding us we all are the same; while we're very different at the same time. I don't know but I have to listen to it all the time and I really enjoyed watching your reaction.Lol
Great first reaction, the choice of artist and your insight. The only thing that could have been better is if you give a couple of seconds rewind after you pause. Not a criticism, just an observation. Thanks for your reaction!
Already a big fan, Psychology and Music the perfect combo. Also big fan of Ren and his music, you should definitely check out more of his stuff. I do however feel like Hi Ren is even more powerful with the swear words included, so I would include those and maybe after you paused the video run it back a bit. Loved the video tho!! ❤❤
Great reaction. I love hearing from the medical community their thoughts on Ren. For the very end of the video - everything that Ren does is intentional. I think at the end where he leaves the silence it's to give you the opportunity to think and reflect. Many of Ren's songs are deep and you can't just move on to the next thing. Having silence at the end of the song gives the space for that self-reflection. For the lights - for me it's not the left vs right lamp, it's having the light on (good side), vs the lamps flashing and going out (evil Ren). At the end when he's standing up and singing again, you can see that the lamps are still flashing and yet good Ren is singing his heart out, which to me reflects his acceptance that this is part of his character and not something to fight, but instead something to live with and alongside. I'd love you to continue reacting to his repertoire. I very strongly recommend you watch these videos next, in this order: - Sick Boi (Official music video) - Chalk Outlines (live x Chinchilla) - Suic!de (Official music video) - The Tales of Jenny and Screech (full - 13 minute video of all three. You really don't want to do any research or get any spoilers for this first) - Troubles (Official music video) - Dominoes (Lyric video) - Diazapam These are all super deep and emotional videos. If you want some lighter (but not specifically mental-health-related) things, then check out: - Back on 74 - Murderer - The Hunger - Love Music 1-4 If you want something deep, but political rather than mental health, then definitely look at the Money Game trilogy: - Money Game (Official Music video) - Money Game part 2 (Official lyric video) - Money Game part 3 (Official Music video) I can't wait to see your next reactions - subscribed so that I don't miss them.
I have watched a great many reactions because it initiates a connection when I see the expected reactions to what I know is coming, and each time it seems to elevate me that little bit more. I wonder if others watch reactions for similar reasons.. I'm especially particular now in watching reactions, and subtitles is a no-no. People made of stone, or those who's reactions change inconsistently rarely make it past 2 mins. This reaction was worth all 21 minutes. Thanks
fun fact, he loves reactions, Ive seen him say hello and thank you on some pages. Some people will blur his video out but it gives him exposure. I don't know if he does it that much now.
You are a beautiful and intelligent person and your words and opinions are appreciated…. Ignore all the negative comments that cross the line of decency and respect….. My biggest advice would be now that you have reacted to this live one take performance, take the time to watch several other reactions to this song and you can see how others have done their reactions and then you get to decide how you want to do your reactions…. Much love and wishing you success and blessings on your journey ❤
Great reaction. This song always gets me in my feels. Another song you should analyze from a mental health point of view is by the Canadian artist Dax. Specially his song "The Abyss".
As I started watching you, my initial thought was "Oh sweet child, you have no idea what you are stepping into". Ren is a rabbit hole you could write a college thesis around.
Welcome! Big love. Sent by Nicole and her for any friend of hers You'll find Renegades a pretty welcoming bunch. A little over-enthusiastic but fricking awesome
Hello and welcome to the RENiverse, Dr. Olympia. Let me introduce you to... Ren Gill, he is a 34 year old Welsh native (Wales from the United Kingdom, specifically from the Island of Anglesey off the northwestern coast of Wales) and currently resides in Brighton, England (a southern English Channel beach town with an insanely active busking [live street performing] scene). He has been performing since he was 12 years old. He is entirely self-trained. He speaks native Welsh, English, French, and I do believe a bit of Italian, IIRC? He is exceptional at the guitar, piano, and vocalisation. He is a totally independent artist who has no record label to represent him or, more importantly, control him. He is a rapper, a multi-instrumentalist, a producer, a singer-songwriter, a composer, and truly the definition of genre-less. He can do any genre, produce any sound or beat, and he can do it all for nothing. No song is like another, no beat is the same, no way to judge anything based on what each song is. Again, it must be repeated: he is SELF-trained and has never had formal training for his music or productions. At the age of 19, he contracted Lyme Disease from a tick bite he received while on a trip with his friends. He was misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led to severe psychosis, for several years until he was properly diagnosed by a Swiss physician. Due to not receiving the appropriate treatment for Lyme Disease within the very short time frame after contraction, the disease has ravaged his body and mind, causing permanent brain damage, severe issues with digestion, sleep, nerves, and various other health problems. It caused him horrendous, chronic, violent pain to the point of being bedridden for years. Music is the reason he has survived. I'd like to provide some cultural context for this artist from another extremely talented artist: This is what the Irish folk rock artist Sinead O’Connor posted on social media after watching Hi Ren: “Holy motherfuckin SHIT! Someone just showed me this at the weekend. This Archangel from like, twelfth heaven or somewhere, has only gone and made the entire history of songwriting and performing look like a three year old's birthday party at Burger King. Every song and or artist in history even Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, NWA, Ice Cube, and even Bob Dylan, is officially relegated to class B. As are every actor in history or legend: living or dead, male or female. We all are now defunct." Posted on May 17th, 2023, 2 months before self-deletion in July 2023. I recommend watching Sick Boi, Troubles, and the 'Chapters' from his RenMakesStuff (BTS channel for Ren) for a much deeper comprehension of his journey. Hi Ren was recorded live in the basement of an apartment building in Brighton, England. It was literally a crew of five people, cost 50 quid (~$62) to make, and the audio is entirely one take. The video is spliced across four one takes. It is recorded live with a lavalier lapel microphone, a portable guitar amp and recording device, three cameras, and Ren's laptop. He rehearsed this piece literally thousands of times before he even recorded the music video to provide certainty that he would get the guitar notes perfectly and his delivery as perfect as possible. This piece is a very personal one for Ren and was the first time in his musicianship to properly acknowledge his ailment, his journey, and his issues musically. He has hinted at it in all of his previous works prior to it, but this was the first time it was out in the open, purposefully. The 'Pig' from the beginning is an essential symbol in the RENiverse and appears in many, if not most, of his other music videos and media. It represents the corrupted and abused systems of the world that take and take and take and never give back to the people they are supposed to support: medicine, music, finances, trade, commerce, government, etc… There are actually four characters in this piece: the yodeller at the beginning and end (representing a call to aspirations), self (the calm and soft one on the 'right'), doubt (the 'evil' one on the 'left'), and hope (the one in the 'centre' near the end of the piece). The written poetry at the end of the piece is a very simplified summary of his real journey and represents his most primary belief system. Hi Ren is a continuation of Sick Boi, which is recorded live (though not a one take) in the same basement a few weeks prior to Hi Ren. It was also produced for practically no money and it represents his feelings on commoditization, greed, the healthcare industry, and the music industry in a generalised yet very specific manner. Literally, his entire catalogue is bloody amazing and I don't think you can go wrong with any singular track. Everything Ren does is intentional. He leaves nothing to chance. He has moderate-severe OCD along with ADHD and so every single detail is poured over, analysed, reconsidered, and digested before it is complete. Have fun! Welcome to the RENegades and the RENiverse. Much peace and love to you. ^^
Welcome to the world of Ren! Since you're focusing on mental health and music, I think another artist that could use a deep dive is Off With Their Heads. Try "Clear the Air" to start. Ryan is great at putting his struggles into his lyrics.
Another great song that has helped many people who were struggling is Peter Gabriel’s “Don’t Give Up”. If you haven’t listened to that one, I highly recommend it. Elton John, among others, said that this song saved his life.
A song by Ren that really fits the context of your channel is "Dominoes". It is a pointed criticism of pop culture and the beauty industry and the effect on young minds growing up in a world of "photoshopped kings and queens".
Would love to hear your reactions to songs by Blue October. Lead singer Justin Furstenfeld sings in the most emotionally open way about all of his challenges with addiction, divorce, custody battles, etc. He's worked through most of it and newer songs are more hopeful and joyous. Most famous is "Hate Me", but also check out "Chameleon Boy", "Fear", "The Feel Again/Stay", and "Worry List". I think you would really enjoy them, and the band's fans have will tell you over and over how much they identify with the lyrics and how it has helped them through so many issues in their lives.
@@Dr.Olympia You're welcome. "Ugly Side" is another to be added to the list, while "Home" is a more recent positive one about finally finding happiness.
you have to react to linkin park songs, especially ones like breaking the habit, given up or one more light, chester was their lead vocalist and suffered from depression but he helped a lot of people with his music
You had great insights on one level of the piece. But there is so much more. Watch it again but not as a psychologist. “Made by his hand”. Whose hand? You saw it in terms of self-help therapy, there is a much bigger theme, one metaphysical. “defeat the forces of Evil”. Not the forces that are evil. Capital “E”. And all part of His plan”, capital “H”. You know you got it if you cannot put it into words. 😉
Subscribed okay so judging from this song you need to listen to Tom McDonald best rapper ever and there's a whole entire array of his music that you can listen to but in the context of your channel it would be a good thing to listen to that song as a reaction and then there is obviously dax and NF just for starters we can even go into tool the song sober specifically looking forward to seeing more of your reactions I hope this helps ;) 😎👍✌️
I respect this for a reason most would not. If you claim (not yourself solely but collectively and professionally,) to be a mental health professional and get broken down crying at this video it's not a great sign. I can see where those who should be helping others fail extraordinarily with exposure of their own issues publicly. That wouldn't give me hope of how they maintain themselves privately. In order to dig into someone's mind and help, I feel like you should have a strong enough mind to not show weakness yourself. Am I crazy to think this? I'm not saying a mental health professional cannot have feelings...that would be absurd. What I'm saying is too many are publicly crying and letting this song get into their heads when reacting and it's not a great look if that is a mind to help another's that's been labeled "broken."
I definitely enjoyed your commentary, but if you were going to stop in the middle of a verse or in the middle of his speech, please rewind it 10 seconds because I feel you missed a couple things, pausing in the middle of a riff instead of in a natural pause

Thank you for all the information, I appreciate it!
I appreciate your perspective! You've helped me see things about this video I hadn't considered on my own, like the symbolism of the lights in the foreground and background. And I've watched this countless times lol. Great breakdown
Thank you for watching!
That was a great reaction! Happy to be here for your first and so glad you chose this song! I'd love to see your reaction to Ren's Suic!de song. It touched me deeply and might just be my favorite song of his at this point.
Thank you!! Oh yes...I recently discovered it and it's a very impactful song.... good idea!
Awesome video! I've watched several mental health professionals react to this video and yours was one of the best. If you decide to do more of these I am here for it!
Awe thank you so much! I appreciate it!
Welcome to the community❤ Off to a great start on your channel!
Awe thanks so much!
I enjoyed very much hearing your perspective on things, I look forward to watching more of your content.
Thank you!
Best analysis so far. The attention to detail was so enlightening. Thank you.

Thank you! And absolutely, he is brilliant!
Great reaction Olympia, very insightful. I hope you will do more Ren reactions. The Tales of Jenny and Screech (and Violet) is a good next one. Cheers!👍
Thank you!!
Loved your reaction to Ren. ❤👏👏
I am glad!! Thank you!
Great reaction. Looking forward to seeing more.
Thanks for watching!
This is my first time coming across your channel and I really enjoyed it. You come across as a pretty soul; very kind, caring, and positive. It was a calming/relaxing vibe.
That is so kind, thank you!!
Great reaction, thanks. I have seen many reactions to this now and it is amazing that each new reactor sees and and hears something new and different, perhaps reflecting the great depth and intricacies of this fantastic work of art.
Thank you! Yes, each time I see it there is something new!
This was a great intro to you and fantastic breakdown. One of my favorites of all time! I want to give one tip if you do further reactions. With the arrow keys on the keyboard as a default you can usually just hit the left arrow to go back 5 seconds, two clicks are usually 10 seconds. It is much appreciated for us who watch it in case you stop in the middle of a line, and we do love to hear you stop and talk about your thoughts, but it ensures you don't miss things!
Yes thank you for the tips!
good breakdown. I really enjoyed your take.
Thank you! I appreciate that.
Good job, Ren is a favorite of many and mine. He is highly detailed.
Thank you! Yes, he is brilliant.
Boom - subbed! If you are anything near as good as Nicole at breaking these reactions down, your channel will explode ... and first impressions are - you are great!
Thank you so much! Nicole is AMAZING!
Awesome reaction and point of view! I'm sure you will soon be on a ren deep dive as he's one hell of an artist. I would love to see you react to james blunt the girl that never was, and james blunt monsters. 2 amazing songs too hope to see more soon :)
Thank you so much! I will definitely take a listen!
Very nice analogy, deep insight to the settings.
Thanks for watching!
Yay someone new discovering Ren! Enjoy :D
Glad I did!
Great reaction. Keep up the good work new sub here x
Thank you and welcome!
Enjoyed! Welcome aboard!
Thank you very much!
Great job, DO- very perceptive and articulate stuff.
I appreciate it!
Great reaction! would love to see you go down the Ren rabbit hole!
Thank you!!
Welcome to the Reniverse!! I really enjoyed your reaction and subbed for more with Ren. I think you may enjoy Ren's Thank you to One Million TH-cam subscribers and his definition of success 🙌 You get to learn a little more about him as a person. Can't wait for more. Oh, and as a hearing impaired person, thank you for not talking while the music is playing ❤
Thank you and thank you for the suggestion! Happy you are here!
Thanks for watching and for joining me!
Ren did a series of Chapters recently to give his story. They are very personal and show what he had gone through up to that point.
Chapter 1

Oh thank you, I will definitely have to take a look!
@ Some people choose to react or watch it themselves for context. Personally I don’t watch reactions to these, but each to their own. Only word of warning is the chapters may end in a song, so you may want to be ready to stop so you can do a reaction to the song at some point.
Loved your insights, great reaction.
Side note this was also done live in a one take shot.
That is amazing. So impressed by him!
😊👏👏👏perfect analysis 😊
27k on your first video is wild work. Impressive.
Screw it here for the ride. Bone apple teeth yall😊
Thanks! I am super appreciative!
You noticed a few things I haven’t yet seen anyone notice in a Hi Ren reaction. The lamps thing is a great catch, and now I can’t unsee it.
Thanks for watching! And yes!
Loved the reaction. His music is very powerful. I suspect it won't be long before you're a Renegade!
Thanks! He is an amazing artist, no question.
Nailed it, well done . Be well.
Thank you so much.
Totally incidental, but I love the name Olympia. I attended college in Olympia Washington and loved the name even before that. It has good vibes. You got a lucky pick from your parents. Great reaction, new sub 👍🏻
Thank you!!
Wonderful reaction.
Thank you!
Thank you! Glad you're here!
Πρέπει να δείς όλα του τα βίντεο απλά. Καλλιτέχνης από άλλο πλανήτη!
Ναί!!
Please more Ren. Great reaction!
Thank you! Will do.
Another RENegade subscribing - cheers from the outback 🦘🦘🦘
Glad you're here!
Great reaction to Ren. Try James Blunt Monster that will shake you up for sure.
Thank you for the recommendation!
Great first reaction, the choice of artist and your insight.
The only thing that could have been better is if you give a couple of seconds rewind after you pause. Not a criticism, just an observation.
Thanks for your reaction!
Thank you so much! Yes, great idea!!
Thank you for your feedback!
I have a BA in psych and a passion for music, so…I teach math!!😂 (Glad I found you🎉)
Glad you're here!
I very strongly recommend you watch these videos next, in this order:
- Sick Boi (Official music video)
- Chalk Outlines (live x Chinchilla)
- Suic!de (Official music video)
- The Tales of Jenny and Screech (full - 13 minute video of all three. You really don't want to do any research or get any spoilers for this first)
- Troubles (Official music video)
- Dominoes (Lyric video)
- Diazapam
These are all super deep and emotional videos. If you want some lighter (but not specifically mental-health-related) things, then check out:
- Back on 74
- Murderer
- The Hunger
- Love Music 1-4
If you want something deep, but political rather than mental health, then definitely look at the Money Game trilogy:
- Money Game (Official Music video)
- Money Game part 2 (Official lyric video)
- Money Game part 3 (Official Music video)
I can't wait to see your next reactions - subscribed so that I don't miss them.
Yes, amazing insights!! Thank you for sharing and for you suggestions!
Straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great break down
I appreciate it!!
Please bring us more
Will do!
Thanks
Thank you so much. I appreciate you watching!
fun fact, he loves reactions, Ive seen him say hello and thank you on some pages.
Thank you for your kind and encouraging words!
Welcome to Ren rabbit hole keep up the good work listen to sick boi that'd be a good one just go next
Thank you very much! It is on my list!
Great reaction. This song always gets me in my feels.
Another song you should analyze from a mental health point of view is by the Canadian artist Dax. Specially his song "The Abyss".
Thank you for the recommendation!
You are doing fine. Keep your voice.
Thank you for the encouragement!
As I started watching you, my initial thought was "Oh sweet child, you have no idea what you are stepping into". Ren is a rabbit hole you could write a college thesis around.
Γειά σου Ολυμπία!!! Ren & Falling in Reverse they go together ,check : "Prequel " ... much ❤ from Greece
Ευχαριστώ!!
Welcome! Big love. Sent by Nicole and her for any friend of hers
You'll find Renegades a pretty welcoming bunch. A little over-enthusiastic but fricking awesome
Nicole is a wonderful and talented friend! Thanks for joining me!
I'd like to provide some cultural context for this artist from another extremely talented artist:
This is what the Irish folk rock artist Sinead O’Connor posted on social media after watching Hi Ren: “Holy motherfuckin SHIT!
It represents the corrupted and abused systems of the world that take and take and take and never give back to the people they are supposed to support: medicine, music, finances, trade, commerce, government, etc…
There are actually four characters in this piece: the yodeller at the beginning and end (representing a call to aspirations), self (the calm and soft one on the 'right'), doubt (the 'evil' one on the 'left'), and hope (the one in the 'centre' near the end of the piece).
Thank you for the recommendation!!
Another great song that has helped many people who were struggling is Peter Gabriel’s “Don’t Give Up”. If you haven’t listened to that one, I highly recommend it. Elton John, among others, said that this song saved his life.
Thank you for the recommendation!
A song by Ren that really fits the context of your channel is "Dominoes". It is a pointed criticism of pop culture and the beauty industry and the effect on young minds growing up in a world of "photoshopped kings and queens".
Thank you for the recommendation!
Papagiorgio! Yassou!
Yiassou!!
Could you show us your doctor's license?
New sub
Thanks for being here!
As a Psychologist, I would love to hear your reaction to Ren's song "Suicide".
Just posted a couple of weeks ago if you haven’t seen it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Oh thank you for these recommendations!
@@Dr.Olympia You're welcome. "Ugly Side" is another to be added to the list, while "Home" is a more recent positive one about finally finding happiness.
@@cklux2011thanks!
😊 Red Eagle does a song in support of suicide prevention called “ Still Here “ , perhaps a reaction to that 😊 …. Oh , welcome to the ren family 😊
Thank you for the recommendation!
you have to react to linkin park songs, especially ones like breaking the habit, given up or one more light, chester was their lead vocalist and suffered from depression but he helped a lot of people with his music
Thank you for the recommendations!
If you liked this you should check out his newest release Slaughterhouse. Welcome to the Reneverse
Loved your reaction and the way you broke it down😊❤
Thank you so much!
Thanks for your recommendations!
I suggest you react to Falling in Reverse band
Thanks for the recommendation!
Yeah music is the outlet to cope with all the bullshit throw at him.
Turning crap into gold.
