She went from being a teacher to running her own business, so from having no control over her schedule & dealing with bratty kids to having complete control of her schedule & doing what she wants. Add in a much lower cost of living being in Mexico compared to a typical US city. Sounds like a dream come true.

As a Mexican who used to live abroad I totally get this lady: I grew up sort of looking up to America since I was a child and when you grow up in a chaotic busy bustling city like Mexico City you crave the opposite: order, cookie-cutter wooden houses, small town life etc ..then at age 27 I went to live to Canada which is not the US but it is something very close in terms of lifestyle, then I got to experience small town, quiet suburban life in a nice neighbourhood and realized it was nothing like I imagined: it was boring, there was hardly anyone on the street so no friends or socializing, everyone was busy working too hard to be able to pay their $3000 mortgage and all their toys, I understood finally how the way Americans and Canadians build their neighbourhoods is so wrong because it makes life miserable: boring, no walkable streets, you need a car to even go to the 7/11 also food is so limited and tasteless ....after a few years in Canada I couldn't handle it anymore and I came back, some people thought I was crazy, they would say: how are you gonna leave the first world to go the 3rd? I said man those things are in your head and are relative: you can live in Canada and live in the "3rd world" if your life is sh11ty and you can live in Mexico in the 1st world if you live in a nice neighbourhood ...I came back to Mexico City in 2018 and I´ve been the happiest I ever been...I finally appreciated the awesomeness of my city and after traveling to other cities in the US, Canada and Europe can say that Mexico City doesn't have anything to envy at all

Seems to me you prob would have been better suited in a more bustling city like Toronto…I live in Los Angeles and I can pretty much get to everything within walking distance…we are similar to Mexico City in alot of ways…you can always get a cheap meal from Mexican vendors on the street…despite the cost of living being high.

You have a few dozen and are whining while the US has millions that not only consume the welfare system but they don’t ever bother to learn the language and raise their children to be loyal to Mexico? I really feel for you. But I agree with you in that I call it passport gentrification. Democrat leftists like her that support a welfare system that consumes the taxpayer and policies that destroy communities under the guise of “progressivism”. Then they move to places like Mexico living like permanent tourist. I also think it is stupid, but that’s what happens when you let children participate in politics. Oh and Mexicans in the US also support higher taxation. Except they get the benefits without directly paying for them. And don’t be subtle on the issue, if you don’t like people like her then say it, it is fine. I notice you Mexicans say that you don’t mind having foreigners but then add to how it’s negatively affecting you. It’s normal, it’s called defending your sovereignty. But I guess since you guys invade another country on a large scale you feel obligated not to be seen as unwelcoming like a hypocrite.

I met her in person during a meetup in Portugal 🇵🇹 in April with others that are interested in improving their quality of life by moving abroad. There are a lot of others that have the same mindset. I’m actually planning my move to Colombia in a few months. Some people are letting fear stop them from doing things like this. They keep looking at the news and allowing it to dictating what life is like in these countries just because people are fleeing. People are fleeing the United States. You won’t hear the news talking about that. That would show more of the problems on top of the problems we already have here.

Japan is the opposite, the few people i have gotten to know in these years are far from friends although i see them almost every year and we share a lot of meals and alcohol, the work culture is crap, the whole hierarchy system sucks. Japan is a great country, i still love it, I go almost every year, i know a lot of subculture and everything, just living there is not for me. On the other hand, the philippines is like mexico 2.0, because there are so many familiar things but also the way people are there, people actually enjoy their life, sometimes id be walking down the street and someone called me to get some beers with them! Vietnam was also a very friendly country even with the language barrier, so many people tried to socialize with me. People from India always tell me they were better off financially in India compared to New Zealand. They say their IT job in India allowed them to buy a nice car and luxuries, but here in NZ, an IT job will barely feed a family of four. We have high rent and high taxes, and the government's spending on healthcare and education is low, so employees get very little back compared to what we pay into the system. The government's two biggest expenses here are welfare beneficiaries and the justice system (courts, prisons etc). Welfare is supposed to stop people from turning to crime, but it doesn't work and they steal from people anyway.

    • @nycbearff
      @nycbearff 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +43

I'm retired, living on a pension - and I spend all my income in Mexico, so of course it is taxed, at 16% I don't pay income tax, because my income is not from working in Mexico. But I'm also not replacing a Mexican worker, and I'm definitely contributing to the local economy by pumping some foreign currency into it every month. Claiming that immigrants don't contribute to the economy is false - anti-immigrant Gringos say the same kind of false things in the USA.
I'd also like to point out that there are many cheaper countries to move to in the world - if a person is an economic migrant looking for a more affordable place, Mexico is not at the top of that list. But Mexico is a splendid country, with smart, humorous, friendly people, a warm culture, and has lots of attractions. Its cities are very livable. Many of us immigrants didn't choose Mexico for the "cheapness", we immigrated because we prefer Mexico and are glad to be living here. I don't want to live in the USA again. My Mexican friends living in the USA prefer the USA, though. Not everyone is the same.
If you're upset by gentrification in CDMX, ask yourself who is raising the prices? It's Mexican developers, Mexican landlords, and Mexican service providers, of course, not gringos. It's not comfortable admitting that it's Mexicans who are raising prices and pushing other Mexicans out of their neighborhoods, but that's how gentrification works in every country - immigrants are just easier to blame.
In my own neighborhood in Guadalajara, the city has been trying to promote gentrification for a long time, but it's going very slowly, because it's not an exciting neighborhood. It suits me, but It's just an old working class and middle class residential neighborhood - many of the families here have lived here for generations. Stores and restaurants close down early, so there is no night life except the local cantina. I rarely hear English spoken here, and my presence is not pushing anyone out of their home. But my presence IS contributing to the incomes of local merchants and restaurants, who I'm friendly with.

While I love this for her, I think it’s important to also visualize how often times the people moving from the US or Europe to CDMX or other places of Latam end up gentrifying those cities driving prices of food, rent and services up, and making locals having to move out because it’s much better to have foreigners paying for those things than locals who lived there their whole life.
Also another problem I’ve seen with this is that they don’t assimilate the culture, you can see it on things as small as not even speaking Spanish in Mexico City and being upset if a menu is not available in English.
So yes this is great, but also keep in mind how these idealistic portrayal of cities abroad damage them by driving the wrong kind of attention and residents.

@user-zg2mm1py1w I agree because I dislike outside people moving to new cities or countries and changing them to be like the places they moved from. Americans are changing neighborhoods in other countries BUT they also do that when they move to different states with different values. Liberal California people moved to conservative Texas and Georgia, for example.
People from other countries move to the US and don’t assimilate either. I know many Spanish and Chinese speaking people who’ve been in the United States for many years who still refuse to speak English. So everyone moving around is now inevitable.

Any people moving to a particular place or city will drive up rent and costs - that's just basic supply and demand. There are towns in New Zealand that have grown very large due to high foreign immigration over the past 20 years, but those immigrants also create jobs because they are buying food and consuming goods and services. Yes they drive up our rent and house prices, but they also create some business opportunities for us.

I've followed Adalia (being interviewed), Stephanie Perry and Roshida Dowe. They have been helping women and families move abroad, providing requirements, hosting a yearly online Exodus Summit, etc. Exodus Summit had over 2500 attendees this year alone, with several well women of color speakers. It's a THRIVING community with a Facebook page, meetups around the country and this year we're meeting in South Africa. These women provide a community to encourage women to move abroad or just take a sabbatical to different countries, not just Mexico, find a community, becoming part of the local community and stop letting fear hold us back, while being financially responsible. Yes, and they won't even make what she is. Her standard of living is way higher than many Mexicans. They work 9-9, 6 days a week and make about $600 pesos, $35 US dollars. Food is a comparable price as in the US. I lived in Ciudad Mante and my husband had a half decent job teaching English in the school system, and we didn't buy an oven for like 5 years. Then we bought one at Coppel on credit. We didn't have a water heater, we heated water on the stove and then mixed it with water in a home depot paint bucket, and poured it over ourselves with old yogurt containers to bathe in the winter. We had a small, old, AC in our bedroom that we only ran at night, and it never got below 80 degrees in that room from March to Oct. All of this, and we weren't as bad off as a lot of people are. Americans should know these things before moving down there. It was a lot for me to adjust to, seeing my friends' houses made of pieces of wood and not having water indoors. @@crishnaholmes7730

As a older Millennial who’s worked in healthcare for 20yrs and has to work 4 16hr shifts a pay period in addition to my 40 this makes me wanna cry. Elitists talk down on other countries but the US is the real joke. Capitalism is killing us and sucking our lives dry. It’s great to see people are divesting and thriving in other countries

Congratulations! Good for you! Your story is a shining proof of why the biggest regret I have in my life is that I did not leave the U.S. when it first became clear that the life I wanted was not do-able here. Warms my heart to hear/see what you've done. Que você sempre tenha bons momentos.

I love that. Having control over my time is huge for me too. Working towards FIRE with my husband and so excited for what's to come, including relocating from Canada to potentially someplace warmer. Love your story and wish you a wonderful life in Mexico, Adalia. Would love to meet you when we visit Mexico City!

Haha yeah it’s called passport gentrification. Vote for a welfare system back home that consumes the taxpayer and policies that destroy the community under the guise of progressivism. Then take it a step further and go to a country with a lower cost of living and raise the costs on to the locals who make a tenth of what she makes. Real genius, I see her more as a parasite. Mexico right now is actually more capitalist than the US thanks to people like this fool.

"gentrify Mexico because corporations destroyed this country and own the media too"
My dad used to talk about journalists with this look of pride. This is so gross. Corporate America is evil.

She's so inspirational. I'm about to turn 38 and have struggled with regret for things I didn't do to have to lifestyle/money I've felt like I should have. I want to leave the US to live somewhere else, but since my nana is aging I don't want to live to far away from her. I also want to live my life fore me (she wants that too). I'm studying tech right now so that I can live anywhere I want and be able to come back when I need to. I want to also be able to look after her when's gets too old to do that for herself. I'm sorting it out mentally and emotionally as we speak, and I think I'll just have to take a leap of faith and trust that it will all work out in the end.

I know an American university professor here in the town where I live, he works 6 months there and comes 6 months to rest here in Mexico, here is a small town of 2000 inhabitants, in an almost famous state of Mexico, far from big cities, It's very safe, no deaths, robberies, or anything like that. There is a lot of nature. Rents are approximately 150 dollars on average
