he reason why a lot of movies, like “The Super Mario Bros Movie (2023)” and “Borderlands (2024)” have big name actors is because there’s a saying in Hollywood that if you don’t have A-list actors, you have little chance of distribution.
That's one of the reasons why the people behind "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return" got sued.
Because "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return" doesn't have any A-list celebrities, therefore none of the big name studios wanted to distribute the film, which is why it was distributed by Clarius Entertainment, therefore it BOMBED in the box office.
So, knowing that you have little chance of distribution if your movie doesn't have A-list actors, why do people still hate movies for having A-list celebrities if that's literally the only way you get distribution from big companies?

True, but there are some that can recognize certain voices. when I was kid I remembered noticing Captain K'nuckle from Flapjack sounded like the flying Dutchman, so what if Chris Pratt were to be in every animated release? Some could probably pick up it's the same guy

The thing is, a LOT of kids would understand the difference or recognize voices and actors if adults pointed them out. I was sure as hell excited as a kid to recognize familiar voices in different series and roles of cartoons. It honestly made me feel very observant, attentive, and smart.
Even when I was under age 12, I actually DIDN'T like most hanah barbera cartoons my parents grew up with because the animation quality was cheap and recycled WAY too much, the laugh tracks grossed me out because they were all clearly adult voices weirdly timed, and then so much of the writing and mindsets were very often very ignorant, condescending, angry, and abusive (though this latter point specifically leans towards examples like Jetsons and Flintstones).

Rachael Lillis, the original voice of Misty and Jessie on Pokemon, passed away on August 10, 2024. She'd been battling cancer, and the end of life medical bills were so expensive, her sister had to set up a GoFundMe to help pay them. Her fans are the ones who came through and donated, easing the financial stress of the past few months. This should never have been on them. Pokemon is one of the largest IPs in the world, and even though she hadn't been involved with it for quite awhile, the idea that someone who was instrumental from the beginning, who helped shape the franchise in America, wouldn't be able to afford to die with some level of comfort without the generosity of her fans is sickening. This isn't right and I am so angry right now.

It can definitely work, and i think especially before I'd say the 2010s-ish. An example that comes to mind is Megamind - you cant tell me the main trio were not made with their actors in mind, and because of that theyre highly elevated in their humor and characterization. However, the key is to not overuse the troupe and the actors that play them.
Another issue though is that today the character is simply the actor, and an actor staring as themself just isnt an interesting role (unless theyre Jack Black)

I think Jack Black has made the same transition that Robin Williams and Alan Tudyk have made. They’re people who have earned the right to say they’re both kinds of actors. it's funny how it's the polar opposite in Japan, were some VA are actually more of a celebrity than tv/movie actors, I mean it helps a lot their entertainment industry is more based on anime, animated movies and video games, but still the contrast is baffling.
An average VA in japan could actually have a tighter schedule than the regular actor, a single actor could be performing for more than one anime at the time, a videogame or a dubbing gig, now when you hit your big break and do the voice of a popular character, like let's say, Tanjiro from Demon slayer, not only will you be called to voice the character in everything he appears, be it a movie, video game, commercials and even toys, but also live appearances, in the west we only have conventions but in Japan, they constantly have anime related events, like "collaboration cafes", meets and greets, temporal store openings, permanent store openings, festivals, and yes regular conventions, there's also more job opportunities to VA's apart of the already mentioned animated movies, anime, video games and dubbing, there's commercials, narrator and announcers, the audio books industry, the manga and light novel industry actually has what is called "Drama CDs" which are essentially audio books, but the catch is, this "Drama CD" is usually a bonus that will never get animated or put in a manga/novel so the only way for you to know of this special chapter of your favorite franchise is to get this CD, which is usually a limited run and usually bundled to a special edition print of a manga or light novel.
Bottom line, a veteran VA in Japan gets almost 10 times more recognition and work in Japan than a veteran in the west, and personally I believed it all stems down to "ye-olde" problem.....in the west animation is kid stuff while in the east is actually the bigger of the entertainment industry.

Kirby Morrow unfortunately passed away, and i dont think he got the recognition he deserved, particularly when he was recast for the movie. I know llyod made a brief cameo in the Lego movie. and that the films creation was only due to the incredible success of the Lego movie. I don't see how that makes recasting the voice actors who had been portraying their characters for years a good decision.
The movie brought a lot of people to the show. I've made my peace with it, and I enjoy its take on garmadon and Lloyd's relationship. I think the movie garmadon did very well. It's still weird that they didn't hire Mark Oliver when he carried season 4, and the fans love it every time his character appears.
The movie was part of the soft reboot and redesigns debuting in the season "sons of garmadon." Not only did they ignore the characterization of the characters in the movie, but they hired people who gave worse performances. the voice for Zane was particularly frustrating.
The voice talent in the Lego batman movie was less set in stone because there have been so many actors for the characters. Will Arnett was Lego batman, and I think he did a great job that justifies his casting, maybe over a previous Lego batman. But that isn't my fandom, so I don't know.

Hot Take: I think Seth Rogan actually did worse as Donkey Kong than Chris Pratt did as Mario.
At least Mario still sounds like a person, Pratt even gave him a Brooklyn-accent. Rogan doesn't sound anything like a gorilla, he sounds like Seth Rogan.
Compare that to Jack Black, who didnt just use his normal voice for Bowser. He actually made it deeper and more gravely so it would sound more draconic. I didn't hear a bit of Po in Bowser's voice.
But when I hear Donkey Kong, all I hear is Mantis and B.O.B. and Pumba. There's no distinction and it really breaks the immersion for me.

My breaking point was hiring Chris Pratt as the voice of Garfield, as it was for many people. There had to have been a ton of other voice actors more qualified for that role. That’s like giving the role of Mickey Mouse to Ryan Gosling. NO! Hire someone with talent! Stop allowing these celebrities to steal jobs from actual qualified voice actors like… Jim Cummings, Rob Paulsen, Phil LaMarr, John DiMaggio, Ashleigh Ball, Kelly Sheridan (hell ALL the women from My Little Pony). Another notable example: The Lego Ninjago Movie. There was a team of well-established voice actors for the tv series, that it was a disappointment that they weren't even considered for the movie. They instead chose celebrities that ruined the characterization of the main group of ninjas specifically. Some were better prepared for their roles, in Michael Pena's (laptop keyboard won't let me type his name correctly) case having watched the show with his own children; while others were likely great actors, but missed the mark on their characters.
And all because they were trying to market interest in a movie that failed, despite its cast and writing. Likely because of the casting and writing in some occasions. This isn't me hating on anyone involved, this is me making an observation on the failure's of a movie that I still love despite its failures.

Much like the LEGO Batman Movie, The LEGO Ninjago Movie is a spin off to the LEGO Movie. It wasn’t an adaptation of the Ninjago series, it was a parody of the Ninjago series much like the LEGO Batman Movie. So of course the actors were changed.
As for the movie’s failure. It failed because not only the LEGO Batman Movie came out, but it also started to make anyone feel unintrested of the LEGO Movie and in turn, started to make the LEGO Movie series, go on decline… which got worse when the LEGO Movie 2 flopped.

Then they realized they couldn't give characters like Tigress speaking roles because it would cost nearly half the budget just to get Angelina Jolie to record a few lines.
Then why didn't they just opt to hire Kari Wahlgren to voice Tigress instead? She voiced Tigress before in the Kung Fu Panda show and some shorts, and she's an ACTUAL voice actress with tons of experiences. Same could be done for the other Furious 5 members.

Remember when they did voices in old Capcom games like Resident Evil 2, Mega Man Legends, and the original Devil May Cry? Remember when Toei commissioned THEM to dub Slam Dunk, Air Master and Interlude uncut? Remember how deep X-Men TAS was?
X-Men '97 is a good start but they don't use any VAs from up north outside the original cast which leads me to believe they simply flew them from Toronto to LA as with the Spider-Man crossover back in the 90s.

The con took care of the price and still kept the entry fee low. After covid you have to pay to meet anyone and most of them have booths in the Alley where they're selling their things too so you can't just stop and chat
I vividly remember getting an autograph from the VA for Italy (Hetalia) while he was on the way to his booth because I was part of the cosplay contest so I couldn't wait in line and we happened to pass in the hallway. There was no need for a money exchange. Not only that but he completely understood and was extremely happy about doing it.
In terms of the AI thing I have a lot of thoughts. I feel like if you literally only need 1-2 short lines it's fine to use AS LONG AS you aren't using the fact that that 1 line is the AI of a famous person/character as a selling point. It should be easter egg statues.
If you need actual work done. An actual conversation or really anything over that 1-2 lines should be paid for

A common problem with many celebrity actors which is especially true for Aquafina and Chris Pratt is that they force their personalities onto the characters they voice instead of them working to alter how they speak so they reflect the intended personality of the characters they voice! It’s possibly another celebrity marketing tactic which has ruined many characters and made many characters voiced by celebrity actors just feel and sound off/strange like if they are trying to be something that they are not because of the personality of the celebrity being most dominant over the character.

I went to a fan festival yesterday where they had a panel called, “you voiced my childhood”.
And I was amazed that we are familiar with their characters, but not recognize them by their real life faces.
And it was interesting how they discussed what it was like either being a person of color in the industry or a woman in the industry.
One actor mentioned how she was assigned to mimic Angela Lansbury and perfected it, but they cut her at the last second and hired someone younger. While the new person did well, she didn’t voice Angela Lansbury at her current age which meant it wasn’t authentic.
The reason behind it is Lansbury couldn’t travel to set so they asked someone to step in for her.
While companies are trying to be more diverse, it sucks that they have to keep fighting for basic human decency and pay.
Now I know why we pay for autographs. The irony is fans are willing to pay their favorite celebrities and 40 or 50 dollars does not break the bank for most people. I just find it sad, yet happy, that fans are willing to financially support their favorite voice actors (mostly when they are nice and authentic) than their employers.
I was happy to meet and get the autograph of someone who voiced a few of our favorite villains, Malificient, Cruella, and Lady Tremaine. She even did Madame Leotta from the haunted mansion. I feel bad that I never put a face to the voice until now.
On the panel, she was funny, sweet, and supported the other voice actors on the panel.
The other two VAs were the same way too.
I hope they had better experiences in the industry at present because most celebrities in Hollywood deserve better.

I spoke to Charles Martinet Last Year at a fan convention, and he told me he wasn’t invited to the premiere of the Super Mario Bros Movie, despite voicing Mario’s dad and plays a character based on Jumpman (who’s supposed to be the original Mario from Donkey Kong). So it really sucks how despite voice actors being well known to kids who grow into teens & adults… they won’t have the same respect as live action actors in Hollywood because they’re not celebrities or famous.

What's funny about this animated voice acting downturn is that video games figured out a long time ago that big celeb names do absolutely nothing for the quality of the story, and in fact trying to emulate live action movies made them worse. The mediums are inherently different and so too does the acting style have to be different, and in fact the best recent example of an actual A list celebrity crushing it in a video game role was by someone who is often thought of as a stiff, rangeless actor on the big screen, Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand.
Animated studios are just repeating the same mistakes the much younger medium of video games already learned from years ago. It almost seems like a form of self-deprecation, not recognizing animation as its own legitimate artform and a perfect storytelling medium, so you have to fix it by either A. Giviing animated stories live action remakes or B. Forcing hollywood actors and tropes and directing styles into animation. Like, Jimmy Kimmel to keeps making jokes about kids voting for the animated Oscar category anymore, so it must be The Boy and The Heron that's wrong and not Jimmy being out of touch.

I can't stop emphasising how grateful I am that the Warner Bros. movie "Storks" allowed Katie Crown (a.k.a. Izzy from "Total Drama) to voice the deuteragonist, Tulip, even though she was originally brought on to provide scratch tracks. I almost thought the character was played by Kristen Wiig when I saw it in theaters! What's even more amazing about this is that Katie isn't even much of a household name compared to, say, fellow Canadian Cree Summer (who also got a W herself when she starred alongside Michael J. Fox in "Atlantis: The Lost Empire")! Then again, Katie was also a pretty successful comedian who had connections with folks like Paul F. Tompkins and Conan O'Brien.
Also just a little correction, Saber: Casey Kasem was still alive when Matthew Lillard took over the role of Shaggy. In fact, Casey was the voice of Shaggy's dad in "Scooby-Doo! Mystery Inc.". He died a year after the cancellation of "Mystery Inc."
