'The Lost Boys' star Kiefer Sutherland talks 'violent and gross' deleted scene

- Before there was Twilight, True Blood, or even Interview With the Vampire, there was The Lost Boys, Joel Schumacher’s 1987 vampire classic. Onbe of the film's stars, Kiefer Sutherland, talks to Yahoo Entertainment's Lyndsey Parker (@lyndseyparker) about the deleted scene that never made it into the movie.

The Lost Boys is so awesome. It leads you to believe that it might be lighthearted, like a teen adventure type movie and then that beach scene happens and it's like, "HOLY SHIT" lol. Sucks that scene was cut but it's still intense on it's own. It still has Kiefer biting into the top of the guys head and blood spraying everywhere.
EXACTLY! The beach scene is the part where the movie tells the audience 'These boys aren't fucking around. This isn't the Goonies. These boys are killers!' The nastier, the more violent, the better! It shocks people! It's my favourite scene.
Nobody else could have been David, Keifer was so vicious and also so calm in that role he was terrifying.
I think he would make a great joker

Loved Kiefer in this. His haircut made him stand out. He looked so cool, for a vampire, cool rock dude with fangs!😘
they showed one surfer guys throat being ripped right out of his neck by Paul, Marco grabbing and snapping another's neck as blood spurts everywhere, David piercing into a surfer guys bald head like he was about to drink a Capri-Sun and the top of the same bald guys skull being peeled back like a tin of sardines, showing the brain, yet they didnt show David biting a chunk out of the back of the surfer guys skull and eating it like cake because it was too much gore???
Its worse when you describe it! I have always freaked out about that scene!
MPAA can be weird. There’s a lot of things where showing that extra second or two of superviolence pushes it over the edge.
Would The Lost Boys get an X rating from such a scene?
I introduced my 16 year old daughter to this movie recently and she loved it, a lot of these 80’s movies are being rediscovered by the new generation and it’s really nice to see
Did she really compare Lost Boys to Twilight...? Come on, lady. Don't blame that classic, awesome movie for Twilight.
Well, she just meant this was the prototype vampire movie that successfully appealed to teens, and it hadn’t been done before. Without the appeal of the lost boys, odds are a lot of vampire ya wouldn’t have made it off the ground. It wasn’t a comparison, but acknowledging that this film was a launching pad for the future vampire craze.

I definitely remember seeing that scene. Thats one of the best scenes lol and with areosmith "walk this way" playing in the background. Sooo kick ass. Cinema gold.
No, this wasn’t a precursor to Twilight. This movie actually had good music, acting and REAL special effects. Not the CGI nonsense and atrocious acting that happened in the Twilight series.

@@nunyabiz2889 It's just my opinion. I'm not saying it's a fact but to be fair it was more of the directors fault because he told him to act like that. A better director would have caught that he was going off the rails and brought him back into a more truthful performance.
And yes, I know that there has been much worse acting. I've seen most of Ed Woods films and I've seen "The Room" PLUS "Birdemic". But of course neither of those were major theatrical releases.
More Blade than Twilight
That scene did make the film. I saw exactly what he's talking about. It's when he and the gang was showing Michael what he was and that he must feed.
He’s talking about a longer version of that scene. Sure, there’s a quick shot of him biting into the head, but theres a longer version. That’s why the scene in the movie is so choppy looking.
The lost boys is my favorite vampire movie, they were all so good-looking and badass, Keifer as David was phenomenal, he looked so good and had the cool line's.

This film was so cool and so edgy. One of the most enjoyable films to watch and rewatch. Kiefer’s haircut was intervention from God.

@Toyota PHV There was a script I read online that was supposedly the one they were gonna use for a sequel, I forgot how they returned but if I remember correctly it had something to do with some chick with something in her possession that brought David and the other guys back. There was also a prequel script that reveals how they all became vampires too.

A twelve year old boy once saw a film that blew his tiny mind. It had everything a boy could ask for. Horror, comedy, beautiful girls and a kick ass soundtrack. You can never experience the same thrill as you get when you first watch a film. But 35 years later, I still get a chill when I watch it. There's been nothing to compare since. The number one 80s classic.

The look was so iconic. It turned out perfect. Good instinct by Kiefer. It also set him apart from the other vampires and made him look like their leader, as a result.

This lady did a great job interviewing. Most interviewers kiss ass so hard and fake laugh at everything the person says and ruin the interview.

He has become the most chill awesome guy to interview in this stage of his life and I just love watching him talk about his roles and appreciate his beginning career opportunities that he didn’t take any of it for granted. Even as a nepo kid, he worked hard and appreciates his career.

The Lost Boys came out in 1987, people like Billy Idol were popular at the time frame so Kiefer getting the mullet was a good idea. It looked better than having his hair all long and looking like Hulk Hogan. Joel Schumacher wasn't happy but I liked it

I remember being OBSESSED with this movie when it came out! My walls in my bedroom were plastered with posters from the movie and cut outs from Teen magazines and I had the soundtrack which I listened to repeatedly! That movie is a legend and so are the characters ❤

I hate the way that this interviewer opens by comparing The Lost Boys to crap like Twilight. Twilight doesn't even come close and should never be spoken of in the same sentence as The Lost Boys unless the sentence includes the term "unlike". If I were to use any movies to make the comparison, I would start with the Blade movies.
One of the best but for all vampire movies storys etc...U all have to thank one man....a Irish man named bram...for if it wasn't for his mind no vampires wud exist...
80's was cool as hell!
They done the right decision by quick chopping of all of those violent scenes. Keeping in the longer versions of them would have prompted an 18 certificate and alienated a target market

Ye, i watched the film the other day and it showed that scene and i always rememebe that scene being in it! Maybe when they actually filmed it there was more to it but they cut it short with only him biting into the head and blood going everywhere

No. What Kiefer described has NEVER been shown. Never. NO one knows where that footage is. All we have is the actual movie footage when he bites into the top of the Surf Nazi's skull, that spurt of blood and that scream. Nothing further has EVER been released.
Hell raisers 1 and 2 were gory from start to finish I never understood why they thought this was to gory lol

Lost Boys is my favourite movie of all time, but I notice how nobody realizes that Fright Night already existed back then and had a similar lighthearted, sexy charm.

"Professional critics" cited zero character development of the core group. It's true, but it wasn't needed. "Lost" teen boys in throw of angst... we see that every day. I lived it. That was a possible sequel or prequel premise that could shine though. Even if concentrated more on Max. A tall, broad shouldered, educated and metered man. Everyman in the civil war... (note costumes)

The Lost Boys would have been a great movie if not for Corey Feldman's HORRIBLE over-acting; trying to make his voice sound deeper and more "gruff" than it really is.
it's supposed to just be comedy though, that the character takes himself so seriously like he's some ruthless badass even though he's only like 14 and has no life experience yet
