      Yup, agreed. ASUS need to really work on building the community around this.

      There never will be. This is a expensive paper weight! LibreElec is in alpha, Android is wonky, Linux is wonky, and the community is to small. I tried every OS and still its a bad board, get me right, its bad because of the software rockchips are just plain simple shit.

    So glad you are covering all these new SOC's - keeps me in the loop! But I gotta say, being in (i guess?) Australia, it would be nice for you to post (OSD) the ambient temp of your room with your (OSD) cpu min/av/max readings. As you know, it is cpu temp minus ambient that gives expected temps for other environments. Bet you're feeling warmer than Sweden!

      Yup, there's always something I forget. The temp here was around 22C

      Which part of Aus do you live in. I feel like 22C is really considered nice and even bit cold in Aus.

      In between summer and winter Australia has some pretty nice weather. 25C is the average, but last summer we saw it hit 50C in some states.

    NovaTech as special guest ? wow, nice :D
    Hmm.... Looks like the TikerBoard still neds some tinkering from Asus's part, eh ? :D
    As for your gag intro, i'm one of those that usually don't care about it and quickly jumps to the main content, so not having one this time did not hurt me, however i do understand those who do like those, so, in their name, please do continue. ;)

      Yeah, it was fun doing the collab. I think next time we'll do something different.
      I'm thinking of moving the gags to the end of the video. There is a cross section of my subs who don't watch them. Sadly TH-cam removed my ability to provide an annotation "skip ahead" method.

    So far you've saved me from buying a Pine64, and any of the Orange Pi boards. Unfortunately I bought one of these already. Hopefully Asus doesn't discontinue it, but I wonder how they think they'll make money from it. Their product lifecycle is only a few years which is hardly enough time to build a community.

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scruggs
      It's not a bad buy. Still a very decent board. There are far worse boards out there, (Pine64?!), so it could have been worse for you.

  • @JamesCoyle95
    @JamesCoyle95 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks like it could be a solid option for custom laptop type devices or emulators if it gets the support of the Pi. The Pi 3 is good but just feels like it's lacking in power a little bit for the more demanding situations so it would be nice to have a more expensive but affordable and well supported option above it. I personally couldn't justify something like $100 on any of the other boards you have reviewed as I don't know enough to fix them if something goes wrong. The Pi is great as you can easily get help with it so if this board can get a similar following it's looking like a great option.

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup and this is why the Pi is so good and is so difficult to dethrone. Not a bad thing as it is achieving its goal of educating people.

    Thanks MickMake. Now I know I need to purchase a voltage and amperage meter. My Linaro-linux did load into the Tinkerboard memory for a month, but not anymore. I tried Buster-linux, Ambian-linux, and Android several times. None of these operating systems load into my Tinkerboard-S boards now. I am really disappointed that Tinkerboard-S is just unreliable for young people such as me. The failure of the boards to load a 5-step etched OS, the lack of support from the ASUS website, and the lack of local interest groups in the Tinkerboard, just means that young circuit board fans will move onto other small circuit boards from other SCB manufacturers.

    I ask a similar question with a Orange Pi board and I guess the answer will be the same.
    Question: Could you run Raspberry Pi stuff on this and expect it to work the same but benefit from the faster system?

    Shame about the LAN misbehaving, I was curious about sustained transfer speeds (though I'd only expect 30-40MB/sec if it were using a USB drive, it'd still be 3-4x quicker than a Pi). Chris over at ExplainingComputers tried out various media playback software and did some temperature/stress testing a couple of weeks ago.

    Why do you always SSH into these computers instead of using them directly?

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Zane C
      For several reasons;
      * I can record my desktop easier than the screen of an SBC.
      * I use templates during video editing that automatically resize and shift the screen.
      * Often the default font size used on SBCs varies greatly.
      So, it's much easier to SSH in.

    Double the speed, double the price, 1/10th the ease of use. I must say, that given the RPi3 design is now several years old, comparisons with new models may not be fair anymore ... The RPi - for me at least- has some very big shoes to fill, that are supported by an enormous community behind it. Sure a F1 race car may be faster, but a regular daily driver is still a better car (bang for your buck).

    The pi3 can easily handle everything up to including PS1 but the N64 performance is just plain horrible.

      With a shitty locked system. And no software support.
      One of the biggest pi advantages are the debian software repos. Next one beeing the community support.

      Yes true. Sadly not many GPIO options on those boxes.

    • @TheWeepingCorpse
      @TheWeepingCorpse 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Valid point Mick, can I pick your brains for a second. I'm trying to find a board with a 64 bit arm soc that can run a 64 bit version of android. Most of the 64 bit tv boxes I've researched seem to be running 32 bit android on top of 64 bit soc hardware, so instead of a tv box I'm looking into buying an SBC, however most of the SBC I look at are using outdated GPUs and I need opengl ES3.0 as a minimum. So to recap, I need an SBC with a 64 bit SoC, a GPU that supports opengl ES3.0 and can run 64 bit Android (or a 64 bit linux if android is not an option).

    ah. yet another pi board.
    I have a box using RK3288 and to tell the truth, this chip should be more powerful than it actually does.
    the chip has a very fierce parameter but feels lacking optimizing.
    Also, the chip is supposed to clocked at 1.8GHz, on which you may cook your egg.
    I don't know why, but I don't have confidence in SoC to drive SPI bus, I would rather like a MCU like arduino or sth.

    All I'm interested in is whether the onboard audio (which Asus seems to regard as a selling point) can compete with the iQAudio Pi DAC+ - even if that's the case, I already have an RPi3 ready for its new hat and the community support for the Pi (and the numerous DAC HATs) is unbeatable. Thanks for the vid.
