    Terrific. With a proper heat sink I'll have no problems fitting it into a mid tower ATX case.

      Yup, with a proper heatsink it's a grunty little board and if you're prepared to hack around a bit with minimal support, then it's ideal.

    Wow, love this. I've just found your channel, and I'm impressed by the audio, video and general high production values. I'd get rid of that other loafer, though - he doesn't seem to be adding anything ;-)
    I've been amazed by the vast array of ARM-based SBCs around, it seems as if the world and his dog want to bring one out. I've been looking at a few boards with a view to building a small cluster, say 8 - 32 nodes. These little units make it easier to build a much more compact machine. As soon as I settle on a board, though, I discover something else! Thanks for the review videos, I will look at the rest, and they may help me decide ... on the Orange Pi, probably.

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much.
      If you're interested in building a cluster just with raw CPU grunt, then these would do well.
      Unsolder the GPIO headers and anything else that gets in the way and add some custom heatsinks and fans. Would do well.
      What are you going to run on them? Is it compute cluster, build cluster, MySQL, etc?

    • @markwoodrow6076
      @markwoodrow6076 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mick, it would be a general-purpose compute cluster. I've built one using Dell desktops, but that is quite large, something smaller and easier to transport would be better. Its partly for investigating the issues around configuring and running a cluster, network topologies, and partly to see how many Gflops you can achieve, using the maximum power that a wall socket will deliver (13 amps here in UK), so a bit like the student cluster challenge that ISC runs. I use Linpack (hpl) to test the compute performance. I was interested to see what tools you are using to test I/O performance, I'll have to re-watch the video.

      Sounds interesting. One of my plans is to run a video on bang for your buck for compute power on SBCs.
      This NanoPi-M3 is pretty good but the Orange Pi Zero probably has better bang for the buck.
      I use the Phoronix Test Suite for my tests. I also try to run some subjective benchmarks like desktop performance. I'm putting up all my results into openbenchmarking.org. Just search for MickMake. ;-)

    Nice. I was waiting for this video. Regarding the heat issue, did the board run hot with your smaller copper heat sink? I wonder how much heat variance there would be if this board was underclocked or had some cores turned off.... (I have a specific project in mind)

  • @DoRC
    @DoRC 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Did you do temp testing with a more reasonable heatsink like the copper one you put on at first? It was cool to see it with the monster one but that's not exactly practical.

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I started out to, but those small heatsinks are really hopeless. I wouldn't really call them heatsinks just lumps of copper.
      There's a real art in designing a decent heatsink and it wasn't used to create those.

    Hi Mick. Haven't seen this video before now, but I'm wondering...where did you get the pin-out information for the RPi? The diagram you added at the 7:14 mark isn't like any I've seen for the RPi before. For instance, I use i2c0 on pins 27/28, by hi-jacking the HAT pins. But your diagram seems to suggest that it's an ALT mode, mux'd with i2c1 on pins 3/5. Is that right?

  • @TableWolfMusic
    @TableWolfMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    For why people use it: Well maybe people just want a maker board that can do the usual stuff but also has 8 cores for parallel fun such as blake2 hashes. Like say, if you had a script to check your downloads are ok but you're not using sha-256 for whatever those downloads are (iso files or something). Underclocking it would cool it down. A slow 8 cores may be ok for that.

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t really have a build video of it. It’s really just an old X86 heat sink and cooler, but one that had a fairly flat base to it

    • @twmbarlwmstar
      @twmbarlwmstar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MickMake Right, I think I have the same cooler, without the fan, in a box of bits. I just wondered how you fixed it on. I have two ideas, cooling paste mixed with epoxy, or a sticky 'paste' pad and two cable ties for extra robustness. I guess it is more a gimic than really a sensible cooling solution (although it would work).

I have the Openbench logic sniffer and because it captures on the board, it is very fast, but is limited to 24K samples of 8 channels. It appears that the LHT00SU1 does passthru to capture on the PC so you'd get virtually unlimited samples. Does the analyzer keep up with SPI protocol? Furthermore, You will need to hardcode the screen's timings and resolution into the kernel and u-boot, otherwise, it will pick a default resolution and won't display properly.

    to your point in this video about the SoC life, could the NTC CHIPs R8 also be short lived? as i hear the R8 was intended for tablets

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it all depends. The lifespan of MCU/SoCs vary greatly. All depending on how much the company wants/thinks they can get out of it. Companies might also withdraw chips as they impact on sales of other chips. It's all about marketing and sales!
      So, not sure about the C.H.I.P. It's essentially a re-badged AllWinner A13 just for NTC and I'd guess that might have an impact on it's lifespan.

    • @lotsarats

    • @VitekSTZero
      @VitekSTZero 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Okay, my bad, the better term is SoC (System on Chip).
      You see, the difference between SoC and MCU is that MCU has everything "vital" on board - that means program flash, RAM, some of them even have its own clock signal source, and are generally low powered.
      SoC on the other hand are chips with integrated CPU, GPU, peripherials and devices for system control (like interrupt controller), but they still need fixed memory of some sort and RAM to run. But they contain a CPU with generally used instruction set (ARM, or even x86).
      Just wanna be correct as much as I can.

    Argh, please go easier on that noise gate, leave some floor noise. That'd be much less nauseating to listen to.

    Your voice and static noise should be constant because your audio track is really difficult to listen to!

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, some of my earlier videos suffered from audio issues. These days I now record a good 60 seconds to provide a constant floor for those bits that are edited out.

    • @TheProdejeffMovieProductions
      @TheProdejeffMovieProductions 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just keep the noise in the audio track, the background noise and when you cut your video stream make sure you leave a split second of noise and merge them with the new voice. Fade those track together and you create an illusion the there is an constant noise in the background.

      Most TH-camrs make that mistake and don't or ever realize it.

    • @MickMake
      @MickMake  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, sound is 90% of a video. Some say 80%, but now that I've been at it 2 years I get annoyed by a lot of things.
      Pops, clicks, mouth noises, bad/alternating floors, wrong levels, music to loud/soft, echos, etc, etc. It goes on and on.
      One thing I do prefer is having more bass in my audio and tend to lift it more. Sometimes hard when I get the odd, stray mains hum appearing, but working on that one as well.

      Indeed and yes, your current vids have the right quality. Be proud of that but there are a lot of TH-camrs who still make those mistakes constantly.

      Yup, it's a bit of a battle for me at the moment getting the audio right. For me; there's just too many things wrong with it, but I'm working on it.
