My hubby introduced me to Emmylou Harris when we began dating in 1977. My hubby, Jimmy has to be one of her biggest fans. When she performed at the Music Mill at Six Flags Over Texas, we chose our seats in the Texas heat with no shade, and stayed there for both shows (the power went out during one show). We were unable to see her again until a year ago, when she performed in Austin at the Paramount. She is still a wonderful performer, and we are so excited to be able to see her in Nashville at the Ryman, along with Rodney Crowell, in January. We traveled to New Braunfels to see Rodney Crowell within the past year, also. Retirement has its benefits! We will see you soon, Rodney and Emmylou! 😎

First time I ever saw Emmylou was in Greenwich Village when I was in high school (around 65) although I had no idea who she was at the time. I met her late 68 or early '69 at a bar in Norfolk VA - purely by coincidence . I was a Navy Aircrewman ferrying a rebuilt T-28 aircraft from Pensacola to NAS Norfolk. We were on a "remain-overnight" and I took a liberty bus down Hampton Blvd into Ghent to get something to eat - a girl about my age was playing at a little bar & grille on Colley Ave . I think it was either what's now called The Onion, or the place across the street from it. Ironically, over the past 30 years I have probably played a dozen gigs between the two of them. She had such a beautiful voice, and when she took a break, I told her she sounded like a girl I had heard in Greenwich Village when I was a budding high school folk performer in the 60s. She said she had played in a lot of clubs in GV, then kept on walking. Don't know - I may have been staring a bit too intently... I still had no idea who she was, but it wasn't long before she shot to fame with Parsons, her name and picture showed up on an album. and I knew exactly who she was.

Emmylou has been in my collection since 1976. Her band was indeed a list of stellar musicians. Interesting she mentions using those guitars for a slide. That is precisely what my old Silvertone became. Little thin-ass frets, and that high action. I used a Bic lighter for the slide. One did what one could. Glad you did this interview, Joe. Phenomenal.

What a beautiful, talented & humble lady Emmylou is. You were lucky to get to interview her Joe. Looking forward to part 2 of this interview. Be well & stay safe.........
Emmylou Harris, what an absolute legend she is in country music. Such an unaffected and gracious person she is as well. Another great interview from you, Joe. Thank you so much for drawing all these stories out of the artists you talk to.
I have the best Emmylou story. I ran into her at a 7/11 in West LA in 2000. (Her daughter was going to college and living in the area). We walk into the store at the same time so I opened the door. She walks by and I recognize her. I head up an aisle looking for something. Next thing I know she's standing next to me. I tell I know who she is and we start talking. I then tell her that I was just on the internet reading stories about Gram Parsons. (which I was) She says, "oh, I don't like the internet." I immediately go into proselytizing about the internet and said, "don't be a Luddite. The internet is going to change the world." She starts laughing. She then says she's in town to play a benefit concert in a couple of days for Fred Walecki of Westwood Music. I tell her I was going to the show as a guest of David Crosby and that I would see her there. Now, this was an amazing show. A night of a thousand stars - Croz/Nash, Zevon, Henley, Jackson Emmylou & Linda Ronstadt, Ry Cooder and many more. So, the show is over and I'm backstage surrounded by my musical heroes, when Emmylou walks in the room. She looks around the room and sees me. She immediately starts screaming my name as she moves across the room - VICTOR!!! The room stops. She runs across the room and gives me a big hug. While she's hugging me she whispers in my ear, "Do you know how I remembered your name?" I was like, "Uh, yeah?" She started laughing and said, "You're the only other person besides Linda to call me a Luddite." It was a moment and it was awesome. What a sweetheart.
Oh my! I know Fred Walecki . I always went to his store to hang out and play with his great selection of guitars, I purchased several from him and he always took care of my guitars. He Became a friend to me. I was at that very concert, ha! Still have the T-Shirt. And a live taping of it done by an friend. I also met Emmylou at the Sunset Tower Record store, she was performing a free live concert of her Wrecking Ball cd. I sat on floor in front of her, amazing band and music. Later she signed her CDs, and was so very nice to meet. I also saw her and this band play live at a festival up near Yosemite.
Great interview of this incredible artist. I first saw her while watching David Frost show in 1970 as a folk singer. She was seven months pregnant with her first daughter. What an incredible journey after that !! Looking forward for the second part.
I was a Sr. At UW when Elite Hotel came out. Emmylou’s legs on the cover drew me in and her talent kept me with her. Good Lord I crushed on her hard. Saw her live in Spokane in late 70s . Beautiful voice and beautiful soul.
I've been a fan since Elite Hotel. Someone wrote her voice was a clear as a mountain stream. She kept the faith in Country music, recording Louvin Bros, Blue Kentucky Girl and many more. I've been lucky enough to have seen her about 5 times.
I had the chance to see Emmylou Harris in concert along with Mark Knopfler to do with his album, All The Roadrunning. It was a pleasure and an honor to see and hear her.
I don't know if you remember but when Emmylou Harris did an album with Mark many years ago the two were guest on The Don Imus Radio Show. I watched the interview on MSNBC many years ago. How fond is Emmylou Harris of Levon Helm? Also who should play Levon Helm in a movie about his life?
@@chaddawkins8525 I like your comment, Chad Dawkins, though I have never been a fan of Don Imus. I've listened to him but have generally kept my distance. As to Levon Helm, your question takes me by surprise. I am a Canadian living in Southern Ontario geographically close to where members of The Band: Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Levon Helm often moved about in the past. Of course, they were Ronnie Hawkins' band for some time in the Toronto area. You can visit Richard Manuel's grave in Stratford, ON. Rick Danko actually lived in my home town for a while. I understand Robbie Robertson has family in or near the Six Nations Indian Reserve near Brantford, ON. As to someone taking the role of Levon Helm in a movie about his life - personally, I prefer that Hollywood leave him alone and not taint his name and history. I've always enjoyed Levon Helm's musicianship. That voice! The way he sat behind his kit. He was unique. Funny, when I think back on my life The Band's music seems to have been pivotal. Their memory triggers the memory of old friends and acquaintances now relegated to my past. I'm sorry I was not able to answer your question as you perhaps would have liked, Chad Dawkins, but I am glad that you sent a comment my way. I'll bet you can tell that I'm an old guy.
@@chaddawkins8525 I got to shake hands with Levon at a show he did in Baltimore but ended up talking to his road manager, Butch. He was the best drummer who sang and the best singer who played the drums.
I remember seeing Emmylou and the Hot band in the Capitol Cinema on O"Connell street Dublin . Dublin was"nt on the Tour circuit then so we were overjoyed to hear Elvis 's band and these Hot new players . We had known Emmy Lou from the GP records so we were ready !! , but oh my goodness what a night ! . Sweet heart of the Rodeo , I kid you not .💗
3:05 "I didn't know it wasn't supposed to be difficult to play and make your fingers bleed." That girl started with a LOT of dedication toward getting where she wanted to go.
Really enjoyed This interview and how candid Emmy Lou is in it. I was a hot band fan when I was young, and Emmy Lou was amazing then. Later on I discovered GP and all the connections. I’ve been enchanted with all of it for 40 plus years, this music and the scene around Emmy Lou for all This time has helped shaped my love for music. Boulder to Birmingham has always been a favorite and early on I knew what it was about. I love all kinds of music and Emmy Lous career has been so special for me. Thanks for the interview to all of you.
Great interview. I've never really heard Emmylou speak at length about her career. I've always loved her. And Joe, you are an awesome interviewer. You asked the question and then let Emmylou roll with it. Perfectly done!
"It was love at first sight they knew nothing about each other they met and here I am." I met my husband from NC in the Seattle Airport by chance in 2011. Here I sit in Texas nearly 13 years later holding 2 beautiful babies in my arms. Thank you Emmy Lou for your way of reminding us of the magic of life.
I saw Emmylou in the early 70's at the Capitol theater in Passaic N.J. she wasn't as widely known at that time but I became a fan because she had ( and still does) a beautiful, soft voice with such emotion behind it. Been listening ever since.
Wow Joe. What a wonderful interview. She is such a class act lady. I love how she looks so stoic when she sings. Its Awesome to hear her tell her story. 👍🏻😎
My goodness I really enjoyed this. Great job of giving the teller room to give the story Joe. You really become the spotlight operator when the interview is done well.
So many great songs from her. My faves are “I Don’t Have to Crawl” from “Evangeline” and “Tulsa Queen” from “Luxury Liner” (such a lovely name for an album) 😍
She is just Total Class !! And Albert Lee is just Amazing on the Guitar i first seen him with Eric Clapton in 1979......and Emmy really gave a Great in-depth interview for you !
Wow, great interview again Joe, i wasn't going to watch it all right now but i couldn't pull myself away until it was done. Being a former Kay telecaster owner who knows how high the action is got my attention right away (i finally Who-ed mine in frustration) . Emmylou seems as genuine as her voice, GOD created an angel for sure. Can't wait for part 2.
A wonderful interview with a wonderful woman. You bring out the best in people, really enjoyed this. She seems to give all the credit of her success to the musicians that at the time surrounded her, very humble and oh so sweet.
Emmy the footage of you introducing your band ahead of your Tulsa Queen performance means a lot more to me now after hearing you talk in depth about your band 🎉❤
There are many great singers out there, but VERY few like Emmylou. She has such a beautiful voice that whenever I hear it, I freeze and just listen to the end. With her harmonies, she raises the songs of others to another level. Truly a national treasure. I hope she knows how much she lifts the spirits of people like me and millions of others. I wish nothing but the best for this special lady.
We (my wife was a top singer here in Houston for decades) have always loved Emmylou. I've been looking forward to this interview since I saw your teaser on Facebook. Once again...great, Joe (and Emmylou!).
Beautiful interview, with insights we have never heard before. Thanks so much. I do wish you had asked about "Boulder to Birmingham". If that was the only song she wrote in her life, she is an absolute genius. That's a song that feels like it comes from every heart that has been broken by losing a loved one.
I live near Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA. The 1932 painting Sweetheart Of The Rodeo was by artist Jo Mora, who lived in Carmel. He spoke at my school once. That album cover was of a very famous painting.
What a good interviewer. After a tentative start, born of respect I think, he relaxes, she relaxes, and he mostly just listens with genuine interest and knows when to ask a simple question to prompt her reflections.
Once upon a time I ended up getting a seat right next to the stage right in front of Emily Lou at the Roxy -- and I was tripping on 'shrooms. I was seated just a few feet from her. It was one of most amazingly spiritual trips I've ever been on. Her beauty and her voice are a blissful experience. Every one of her songs sent me to Heaven. She's an Angel.
@Rick Stone. You may have already read this. Emmylou said "When I get to the Gates of Heaven and St. Peter asks me what did I do on Earth, I will be able to say with pride that I played rhythm guitar for Albert Lee"! Thank you Emmylou for sharing your talents with us. Hope you can keep on sharing for many years to come.

Very cool!!
P
great story! Yes, she is.
Emmylou will be gone some day, but will live on for future music lovers on the internet. I hope they understand how lucky they are. I know I do.
Thank you so much for this wonderful interview with Emmy Lou!
Thanks for watching our videos William... Joe
Great interview of this incredible artist. I first saw her while watching David Frost show in 1970 as a folk singer. She was seven months pregnant with her first daughter. What an incredible journey after that !!
Looking forward for the second part.
Thanks for sharing your comments John...Merry Christmas... Joe
She is one of my favorites and a great singer and I loved it when she teamed up with LR AND DP and all 3 of them have a great harmony
@@Teachering Wow this is so cool. You gave me more than enough sir. Peace & Love!!! 🙏❤☮✌🕊💖😊
@@chaddawkins8525 I got to shake hands with Levon at a show he did in Baltimore but ended up talking to his road manager, Butch. He was the best drummer who sang and the best singer who played the drums.
@@steveh46 I believe so as well. Thanks for letting me know!!!!! 😊💖🕊✌☮❤🙏😁
I remember seeing Emmylou and the Hot band in the Capitol Cinema on O"Connell street Dublin . Dublin was"nt on the Tour circuit then so we were overjoyed to hear Elvis 's band and these Hot new players . We had known Emmy Lou from the GP records so we were ready !! , but oh my goodness what a night ! . Sweet heart of the Rodeo , I kid you not .💗
Amazing interview. Thanks for this treasured archive.
3:05 "I didn't know it wasn't supposed to be difficult to play and make your fingers bleed." That girl started with a LOT of dedication toward getting where she wanted to go.
Thanks for watching Ed...Joe
Really enjoyed This interview and how candid Emmy Lou is in it. I was a hot band fan when I was young, and Emmy Lou was amazing then. Later on I discovered GP and all the connections. I’ve been enchanted with all of it for 40 plus years, this music and the scene around Emmy Lou for all This time has helped shaped my love for music. Boulder to Birmingham has always been a favorite and early on I knew what it was about. I love all kinds of music and Emmy Lous career has been so special for me. Thanks for the interview to all of you.
I have always been a fan of Emmylou's! This is such an amazing interview, and I thank you for it! GREAT! God bless, Brother Charlie
Thanks for watching Charlie….Joe
Thanks Joe, i've loved Emmylou's music since i bought Pieces of the Sky
and Elite Hotel in1975...
Thanks ian...Joe
Great interview. I've never really heard Emmylou speak at length about her career. I've always loved her. And Joe, you are an awesome interviewer. You asked the question and then let Emmylou roll with it. Perfectly done!
Thank you Jeffery.... part two hopefully next week by Friday.... Merry Christmas..Joe
"It was love at first sight they knew nothing about each other they met and here I am."
I met my husband from NC in the Seattle Airport by chance in 2011.
Thanks David... Merry Christmas...Joe
Great interview, Thanks Emmylou
Great interview Joe. She is so beautiful. Love the Kay story, but the babysitter story beats all.
Thanks again for watching Playpen...Joe
Humble lady, and still retains her good looks. Oh, Lest I forget ! A brilliant voice lol
What an amazing time to be introduced to the musical people who she met. Just amazing wish I had been in those places with those people.....
Penny... thanks for watching our videos...Best....Joe
I saw her live, with the Hot Band, at my college sometime in the early 1970's. What a great show. Very high energy. I've always remembered it fondly.
My goodness I really enjoyed this. Great job of giving the teller room to give the story Joe. You really become the spotlight operator when the interview is done well.
PS looking forward to seeing that Kay.
Thanks Chuck... it easy when you have someone like Emmylou. Merry Christmas to you and family...Joe
Me too!
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Merry Christmas to you and yours Joe!
Thanks John... part two is coming... Merry Christmas...Joe
A wonderful interview with a wonderful woman. You bring out the best in people, really enjoyed this. She seems to give all the credit of her success to the musicians that at the time surrounded her, very humble and oh so sweet.
Emmy the footage of you introducing your band ahead of your Tulsa Queen performance means a lot more to me now after hearing you talk in depth about your band
🎉❤
Wonderful interview of a wonderful woman!
You do the best interviews & this one with Emmylou is another great one 👍
Thanks Dave…..Joe
Joe, this is gold. Thanks and Happy Holidays!
Merry Christmas Greg...Joe
There are many great singers out there, but VERY few like Emmylou. She has such a beautiful voice that whenever I hear it, I freeze and just listen to the end. With her harmonies, she raises the songs of others to another level. Truly a national treasure. I hope she knows how much she lifts the spirits of people like me and millions of others. I wish nothing but the best for this special lady.
Thanks for watching William...Joe
We (my wife was a top singer here in Houston for decades) have always loved Emmylou. I've been looking forward to this interview since I saw your teaser on Facebook.
Once again...great, Joe (and Emmylou!).
Thanks Buzz... Merry Christmas to you and your wife... Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Beautiful interview, with insights we have never heard before. Thanks so much. I do wish you had asked about "Boulder to Birmingham". If that was the only song she wrote in her life, she is an absolute genius. That's a song that feels like it comes from every heart that has been broken by losing a loved one.
loved hearing this interview....we all watched this for the same reasons (stars aligned), great channel and artist.
Thanks for watching CT...Joe
I live near Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA. The 1932 painting Sweetheart Of The Rodeo was by artist Jo Mora, who lived in Carmel. He spoke at my school once. That album cover was of a very famous painting.
Such a humble person..struggle is ovious to come up in life..light comes after darkness
Wow! Great interview once again. Thanks so much all these great shows, this has to be one of the best yet.
Thanks Leslie... much appreciated... part two is coming... Merry Christmas to you and family...Joe
Still a very lovely woman & talented musician..
What a good interviewer. After a tentative start, born of respect I think, he relaxes, she relaxes, and he mostly just listens with genuine interest and knows when to ask a simple question to prompt her reflections.
Thanks for watching John...Best,.....Joe
This is a tremendous interview. Thank you so much.
Thanks 46..... Joe
What a great interview!!!! Thank you!

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Merry Christmas Joe!
Best quote I ever heard about Emmylou. “She could harmonize with a chainsaw”
Such an incredible artist is she. Never missed a her shows when she played at The Crazy Horse in Santa Ana, California. Loved that venue.
Albert Lee was certainly a big part of her success. He’s one of the best country guitar players in the world.
Frank Reckard did a hell of a job for her as well.
@@tomcoryell not to mention James Burton in the original Hot Band
@Rick Stone. You may have already read this. Emmylou said "When I get to the Gates of Heaven and St. Peter asks me what did I do on Earth, I will be able to say with pride that I played rhythm guitar for Albert Lee"!
Thank you Emmylou for sharing your talents with us. Hope you can keep on sharing for many years to come.
@@markmiwurdz202 I was just going to say that! So true.
The first time I heard his solo on luxury liner just dropped me in my tracks
RIP Joe Chambers. He was a man who really loved musicians and honored them. Wonderful exchange with the exquisite Emmylou. I would have liked to have heard a little more about the Hot Band, especially my hero Albert Lee.
Steve Drake, thank you for you kind words & continued support of the channel…. My dad, Joe, would have really appreciated it & so do I. Hope you can visit the museum sometime.
All the best,

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Thanks, Britt! Your Dad was a blessing. God bless you and your family! YES! I'll visit the museum and just feel all the loving vibe. Music is very emotional and historic. Joe was dialed in on that.
I totally agree Steve, music is emotional & historic, and that’s exactly what you will feel in the museum. Thank you for your kindness, look forward to your visiting.
God bless you too,

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Brit I had not heard your dad died. I have enjoyed many of your dad's interviews. This is probably at least the 3rd or 4th time I've watched these two interviews with Emmylou. Best interviews of her I've seen. I was reading comments and ran into this. My condolences. I hope you can keep the museum going. I'll probably never be able to, but I would love to see the enactron truck. So much of the music I loved in the 70's was recorded with it. JK
JK, I love that you’ve come back to watch this interview so many times. Your sweet words & continued support of the channel mean so much.
Dad passed September 28, 2022- we posted the celebration of life we had for him at the museum on our channel if you want to watch.
So many people are blown away with the enactron that weren’t even sure what they are walking into… I so wish you, who actually has knowledge about it, could walk thru, I know it would be so much fun for you. My hope is that you will find a way to make it to the museum, we continue to add exhibits & I am sure you would spend all day there. Let me know if you make it!
All the best,
Britt
I was at Ft Belvoir, VA just up the road from Quantico. 'Two for Tuesdays' at the Cellar Door (2 acts for $2bucks). Linda Ronstadt with warm-up act CHEECH & CHONG!! Love Emmylou. Seen her a couple of times. Really discovered her thru Gram. Great one Joe. Thanks.

Loved the interview and Emmylou Harris! Beneath a Painted Sky is a beautiful song by host Joe Chambers and Bucky Jones! Glad you mentioned it. Just gave it a listen. As great now as it was then. My oh my. She's awesome. I remember high school in the 70s and my math teacher gushed over her one day instead of teaching. I'll never forget that. Now in my 60s I still have that crush.
What a gracious woman, beauty through and through -- was never exposed to country music growing up but I somehow heard (and bought) Pieces of the Sky when it came out when I was in high school and her voice was from some archetypal dimension that transcended musical genre -- Elite Hotel is still a masterpiece -- thank you for putting this on film ♥️
