Just a fantastic interview! I've had a great respect for Emmy Lou Harris for a long time. Absolutely the classiest artist ever!
It was because of her I was introduced to so many artists that became my favorites as well. Her folk music roots (and Gram) that steered her to the more traditional country music as she explained was a natural progression because "in folk music, the lyrics matter". You can draw some parallels to Dylan, who of course brought so many meaningful lyrics to rock music after becoming a folk icon. To me, that is the appeal of so-called roots and traditional country music, that the lyrics do indeed matter. Thanks!

I got to see her at the palamino club while in the navy....i had never heard her and was shocked at the reverence the crowd had for this lady....you could hear her breathe between songs and the place was packed...they just hung on every sound she made...that was the thing that I'll never forget...

Nice interview, Joe. Love Emmy Lou. She is such an authentic person and musician. She really does seem to perform just for the love of music.
How about a reunion of the Hot Band for an interview and performance? Also another Nashville fixture that used to play with Emmy Lou is Buddy Miller. He would be a great interview...he has played with so many people and seems to be a Nashville insider.

I saw Emmylou & the Hot Band in early 1976- an amazing concert in the Free Trade Hall, Manchester. A number of years ago I met someone who is a professional musician and he was at that concert and we both concur- it was one of the very best we both had ever attended. At that time, he was a student at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and he is now a classical guitar tutor at a very prestigious music school but he loves hot Telecaster playing in the style of James Burton or Albert Lee and has become a good friend. It's funny how such a memorable concert hit the spot for both of us. One final thing, during the concert, there was an acoustic set- James Burton played dobro while Emory Gordy gave the bass to pedal steel player Hank DeVito to play while he then played mandolin. Some things are just so unforgettable.

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum It's my pleasure Joe and I also got up and got right in front of the stage- just a few feet away from Emmylou and she was wearing that outfit that you see on the front cover of Elite Hotel- which had just been released. As I wrote, some things are unforgettable- like James Burton's solo on "Better Shop Around" which I seem to recall Emmylou said that for some contractual publishing reason she could not record on a studio album. There is now a live album from this era that can act as a Time Machine! When she had done a "one off " concert at what was then called the New Victoria in London, the year before (1975), I was told my another friend who was another professional musician that the concert was a "Who's Who" of British guitar heroes- all there to see their hero James Burton- and Emmylou, of course. I got to meet James at a Billy Swan concert in London a while back- that was great, too I will shut up now!

Not so much an interview as two genuine people in conversation. EH's sincerity is unquestionable. She may not have been a prolific songwriter but in my opinion the lines
    "You're in my heart
    That's not close enough"
written on the occasion of the death of her beloved dog are as good as poetry can get, probably due in part to the inherent contradiction. If you have never heard the song "Not Enough" check it out at:
    th-cam.com/video/CfQ_qorX8jU/w-d-xo.html
Tissues or a handkerchief are recommended.
