- My old planer broke down in the middle of a massive project and I had to replace it ASAP. Normally when a tool breaks down, it's a perfect opportunity to upgrade to the one you really want. However, the planer of my dreams simply wasn't in the budget. Not yet, anyways ;)
My old one was a Dewalt DW735 and it served me very well for 8 years. For 5 of those years, it was used on an almost daily basis. I would have happily replaced it with the exact same model but there wasn't one available to me as quickly as I needed it so I went with the model down. Which I happened to be able to purchase on sale. Perhaps it was meant to be?

I’ve always wanted a Hitachi F1000A planer/jointer combo but when my father-in-law gifted me his DeWalt 734, I couldn’t bring myself to buy a second planer. The 734 is under-powered but as long as I don’t get greedy and try and take too much off it works great for my home workshop. And can’t beat the price. Oh and my father-in-law ran the planer for a lumber mill in the interior BC, so he’s forgotten more about the particular tool than I know. The dream planer will need to wait.
It is exciting getting a new toy for the shop.Even if it was a step back from the last model.So enjoy I hope it serves you well.
this is by far the best video. Sometimes you just gotta buy the new tool and keep working. I just pulled the trigger on a 735 and am excited to unbox it tomorrow. I have been waiting for MakerSpace to get our 20" planer working and it hasn't happened. I kept saying I would never buy a planer for my home shop because they are too noisy and messy, but I have a huge pile of wood waiting to be planed and made into things. I just couldn't let that be an obstacle anymore so instead of limping along, I am plowing full steam ahead. Same for you! Onwards and upwards Ryan!
Glad to hear that Russ! It’s so true, you just gotta keep plowing ahead. It’s the only way to get to where you want to be. Hopefully they can get that 20” running sooner than later. The 735 will serve you well!
And another thought is that I like that you have your eye on the planer you really want. The 734 is meant to tide you over until then. If you went for a 735, you might get another 5+ years out of it and have a harder time justifying getting the planer really want. 😎

I’ve had a 734 for 10 plus years. I had 735 envy there for a minute.
I love mine and make mountains of debris constantly lol, it also doubled as my joiner too before I had one

Bummer on the breakdown, but it served you well over the years. This one should as well. I've had that same planer for the past 5 or so years and it's been a workhorse. Looking forward to the day you get to unbox your dream planer.

Cool video. I have used both. The newer model 735 keeps popping the breaker next to the switch and this new one leaves a strip down the middle of the board. Can’t figure out either problem. Love your work kid!
I would say it's the brushes in the motor, when they wear down it will not get power to the motor.
Can't say Im overly interested in a planer - but in support of you n ur channel (& ur infinite patience I always mention lol)....

Yes you need a heavy duty planer for what you do, those planers are mostly for planing lumber for one off projects.

Only 350 Dollars? WOW!! I bought my Dewalt planer, DW733-QS (you can't get a 735 here) about one month ago, at the normal price, 900 dollars!
But I'm not surprised, as we now pay +7 dollars per gallon of gasoline.
On the other hand, we also have a minimum wage at f.x. Mcdonald's at 22 dollars/hour (with, like all workers in my country; 6 weeks of paid vacation a year, 6 months of paid maternity leave, paid sick leave, (all at which time you can NOT be fired) etc)
Okay, back to the planer and why I haven't even unpacked it yet!
My workshop (shed) is a bit small for woodworking (33 sq ft), and I need to find a way to fit my small table saw, 12-inch bandsaw, and this planer in there, AND still be able to work with pieces longer than 2-3 ft before it hits a tool, the workbench, lumber, etc. or wall or the roof (5,9 ft high, which is fine, as I'm only 5,2 ft)
And living in Denmark, it's often not that many days in a row in the summer you can take the electric power tools outside and work without all getting wet (I've been told electricity and water can be a safety hazard) and the noise from saw and planer, for hours and day after day, it's an absolute no go outside!
Even if I didn't have the world's best neighbors, which I do have, as I try my best not to do anything to other people, I don't want them to do to the people I love most or to myself!
Me complaining? No, no! It's all certainly luxury problems that can be fixed.
Just need to find out how! 😁

I've used the DW734 for almost 2 years now not the best obviously but it gets the job done

If your motor was losing power then ramping up and then just quit working I’m going to say it’s your brushes, easily replaced. Same thing happened to my oscillating spindle sander last month, changed the brushes and I’m back in business
Hey Ryan I've had both the 735 and 734... if I'm being totally honest the 734 did a better job for me. Maybe a little less powerful but way less slop in the adjustment mechanism and *significantly* less snipe. I've done everything possible to the 735 and the snipe issue still wastes a lot of wood. Wish I still had the 734. But honestly for what you're doing you're going to need a bigger more capable planer than any of the breadbox models anyway. Also BTW get rid of that silicone lube in your shop. You do not want silicone anywhere near wood you're going to put a finish on, and the includes tools that will be touching wood. You use mostly oil finishes so you may not have a problem but if you ever want to use anything else I guarantee you'll thank me. Spray silicone gets *everywhere* and is almost impossible to get out of the environment once there. I haven't found a solvent that works 100%. I made that mistake and 2-3 years later I'm still battling silicone fish-eyes in my finishes.

I use spray graphite fwiw. Also have a 734, and I used to think it was the wrong choice with everyone grabbing the 735... this makes me feel a bit better.

Between the 734 & 735, which do you prefer and what's the biggest reason why?

OMG - I have this planer but it is repacked as a Hercules brand and is sold by Harbor Freight.
It retails for $400 but I paid $300 with their 25% off coupon.
I'm not running old pallet boards through mine. It appears that's very hard on a planer like this. Pallet boards are notorious for having all kinds of metal in them.
It's a good idea to verify that the infeed and outfeed aprons are coplanar with the central deck.
Actually DeWalt wants them raised slightly, exactly how they come out of the box (usually anyway)... supposedly to control snipe.

Not sure if you know, but the motor does have replaceable motor brushes, that’s probably the only problem with it. They are easy to change and don’t cost that much. Just an FYI.
I was made aware of that after the fact. I still have my old one, might look into replacing the brushes.

How important is a planer in working with wood? Reason I ask is because they’re so expensive, it’s hard to justify the cost to my wife lol. However I’ve built quite a few projects with pallet wood not needing it yet. Now I’m moving onto building a farm table so I definitely need to consider it. Would a box store planer work?
I consider a planer pretty important. I recommend getting one. I’ve made box store planers work for me over the years
What’s your reason in downgrading from what look likes a 735?
Budget and I live in a fairly small city. I would have had to wait a week to get another 735, so I picked up the 734 to keep the job going
Have Dewalt 733 which is pretty much the very same model with 2 blades. Super loud machine with average finish cuts. Not super impressed ! I was also naive and tought that running any boards
will make them super straight. This thing will only remove material but once you put in twisted, warped board it will spill twisted and warped board with a bit on removed material. Rookie mistake i know. What i got now is Metabo 260C which also has jointer and is cheaper than Dewalt planer only. You run boards through jointer first on 2 sides and then through planer mode. Results are super straight boards with very nice finish almost ready to assembly no need to sand them. My point is don;t overpay for planer only! Get combo in 1 planer and jointer!

He checked everything in the planer other than the motor brushes.
Enjoy your new planer, hopefully you can pass it on to someone who can get another 8 years out of a new set of brushes.
By the way, the instructions probably show you how to replace the brushes that you probably got a spare set of with the *nyew wone*

For the amount of wood you process and the space you have in your shop, you probably would have been better served buying a more commercial tool.
100%, it just wasn’t in the budget at this point in time.
