Just wanted to thank you guys for the MTD build it really helped me even though it turned out to be an easy build. Next time don't leave out the motor and root wing assembly. My only negative is go back to 1.3ghz that ground video was lousy. Thanks again.
+AGL Aerial Video Solutions Iv got a Talon kit on the way. Should be delivered in the next 20 days or so. My first job is to build a 4S battery pack from 16X Panasonic 18650B They should be about 60% of the weight of a Lipo battery of the same power.
That is the prettiest MTD I have seen, Nice job. I was wondering if you could help me out and send me or post-the link for that Peto tube mount that you are using. I would really like to mount it on the side instead of the nose. Thanks
Waaw! Really good stuff. And I like you customization. I'm waiting for mine and work on the build. I have some questions. How do you wire the motors spin towards each other? I want to avoid keeping wing extensions permanently on the fuse because they make the whole thing bulky and hard to travel with, any ideas on please? I also like to paint it, how do and what paint? Your answers will be highly appreciate.
Where is the camera pan tilt bought from? It looks like 180 degree up/down and 360 degree around. Can you confirm? Really interested in a complete kit with servos and mount plate included. A close up video of the pan tilt with maximum view all sides much appreciated.
Eirik Larsson We bought this from Servo City to test out. It's a bit beefy. We have 90* up and down and 180 rotation. Below is a link to their site. Thanks for watching. www.servocity.com/html/ddt500_direct_drive_tilt.html#.VUDOASFViko
The pan tilt is NOT TOO BIG. I love it. I actually like it so much I would appreciate it if you'd reply with a link so I could buy one. :-) I am getting into FPV and looking for parts.
Hi. First of all, congratulations for the "MFD Serie Videos". It's amazing. Wich material did you use to protect the "airplane belly" and the edges of the wings? Can you give me the link of product, please? I'm in Brazil and I will try to find it. Thank you.
Great video guys , great build and i will be a subscriber for life .plane looks like its on rails ...one drawback no landing gear don't mess up the paint job!!!! that's my next plane . gotta go see the video again see ya
Ha ha Nick, that is exactly why we put some laminate on the belly. It will cause the plane to slide a little farther on grass landings, but, will be good for protecting the paint. And the LED strobe under the tail. Thanks for the kind comment!
did you ever put a 1.3 vtx on aircraft? been watching your build video as a guide to building mine. Wish you had more videos on the My Twin Dream you guys did as good job. If you did put a 1.3 vtx where did you end up placing it? Thanks
Hi, since you have had this plane for a while now I was wondering if you could help me with a couple of questions. What is your flight time fully loaded with gear? Where can I buy this plane? What AutoPilot do you use and think is the best for mapping ect? Thanks for your time
Congrats guys ! I am going to use this "Flying Whale" as a test platform for a quite complex avionics package (dual Vector system plus more). Upon (hopefully successful) test flights, the avionics will be transferred to a VTOL UAV (design finished; waiting realization). This plane will be a technical demonstrator under terrestrail conditions for a later UAV on Mars (YES .. planet Mars); to be launched in the 30ies or 40ies.
Nice maiden guys!! You're using two 9x6 tri-props and MFD supply two 9x6 twin props (not sure what kv motors MFD use though) How did your tri-props go, did motors get hot/or not, did you do any thrust tests etc? All your comments on the motor/prop set-up welcome. Thanks
We used 8x6x3 master airscrew props for this flight. The motors were HK 2836 1000kv on 4s. The motors did not get hot. Nothing on the power system even got warm. We hope to get some more stick time tomorrow. I do believe I read that the MFD motors were 800kv and they are 3530 motors (2826 stator size). We did not do any thrust test, but did have some watt tests. We are planning to build a watt/ thrust test stand soon.
Hi, i have bought the same pan/tilt system from servo city like you suggested and have put a mobius cam just like your setup but im getting some jello effect. Now i will say that i put a antivibration gel on the pan/tilt platform then put the mobius mounting sleeve on top so i can move the mobius between planes. Do you think the mounting sleeve might be causing the vibration instead of putting the mobius directly on the platform like you did? Do you get any vibration or jello and how did you mount yours?
***** We also noticed jello in our video and attributed that to the Velcro. We have since used a two sided foam pad to adhere the mobius cam holder to the P/T system
Hey! Could you please link the pitot tube holder? Which one and from where? I am having a hard time locating it. The one I saw o Shapeways page looks nothing like yours. Thanks.
Another quick question, i did notice that the turnigy sk3 1040kv is rated up to 3s. So there was no problem running 4s on these motors? Was the motors or esc's warm or hot?
No most of the 3s rated turnigy motors will run on 4s just make sure not to over amp them. That's why we dropped the prop size down just a bit before the maiden. Nothing got warm during the flight. We flew it again earlier this week with the larger motors and flew for 40 minutes and covered over 25 miles running 1.5 mile circles around our flying area. We had a 8amp load of lipos on board.
AGL Aerial Video Solutions ok good cause I'm gonna order the same motors..I talk to Charles and he shipped my plane 2 days ago...I'm ready to fly this bird lol...thanks 4 ur help
Owning a Penguin + gimbal + ezuhf + fy41, nice payload and battery life but a bit cumbersome to transport. This plane seems much smaller with as about the same payload ability 4 questions please : - how does it behave in stronger wind ? - in terms of redundancy... Does it fly with only one engine on ? - did you have to program any mixing for the combination of two motors or only one unique throttle cable gos from the AP to some Y connector straight to the motors ? - how does it behave in 2 axis only ? I do not like too much playing with ailerons. Thank you very much :-)
+Philippe Giboulot It has a better paylaod area than a Penguin. It flies well in wind, I've never flown on one motor, and don't plan too, but it has a nice glide ratio. I just used a simple Y connector for the motors. It flies great with or without the AP.
It's just laminate film you can get from ebay or amazon. We use both 5 mil and 10 mil. We use the 10 mil as belly pans on our belly landers. We use the 5 mil as a covering to protect the leading edges of our sings and give them a bit more strength.
+AGL Aerial Video Solutions That's a great idea with the laminate ... both thumbs up! I'm wondering what sort of temperature you needed to activate the glue or more importantly how hot before the EPO starts to melt?! ... specifically on the MTD. cheers on a professional looking video
Thanks...we have a hobbico iron and usually keep it as hot as it will go, just keep moving as with monocote, or the foam will start to get a alligator look to it.
Rich, we communicated with MFD about carrying the airframe. Unfortunately, unless another type of shipping comes up, we would have to charge much more than they do to even "break even" due to shipping per unit. If they figure out another type of shipping, then we would love to carry this airframe. Keep in mind, we can still build one if anyone would like one built for them. We currently would have to order it from MFD like everyone else right now.
Im a little confused....On your electronic build video you said you was using turnigy aerodrive 1040 kv and 9x7 airscrew props , so did you change to the 2836 HK 1000kv 8x6 airscrew props???? which setup works better...HK motors you talking about is that NTM motors or do you have link to the motors...Sorry for so many questions but the props 8x6 are they regular or pushers or one of each? I cant tell from the video..
***** one the build video and maiden we used the Turnigy SK3 1040kv motors. We installed 9x7x3 props during the build. Prior to the maiden we got in some 8x6x3 props that we used for the maiden because we were worried about that bigger prop on the small shaft of the 28 can size SK3 motor. The 9x7x3 props almost over amped the motors too so it seemed a better be safe than sorry moment so we went with the smaller prop. There was still PLENTY of power for this bird. We run counter rotating props to kill any torque roll. We have since done a motor swap to the suggested 35 can size motors and look forward to testing those soon. not that it needs more power, but we hope to drop the amp draw during flight to give us more flight time, and the weight gain was minimal.
+AGL Aerial Video Solutions the big gimble on the nose creates turbulence and reduces the efficiency of the rudder that's all, but if its flying good and your having fun that's great
Yea, it doesn't appear to have any trouble floating on landing. The drag from that monstrosity must be huge. Like flying around with airbrakes on all the time :-)
Never understood why people bother putting 5.8 gear on for the maiden. Seen it done several times. 1.3 will work up close too, and you won't have to redo the plane.
+AGL Aerial Video Solutions the mtd is capable of going 50 miles out. I don't see the point of putting on an inferior video system for the maiden is all.
+Matthew Doherty Well I certainly thank you for watching our video, and you are certainly entitled to your opinion. I for one prefer the smaller lighter weight setups, and have no intention of flying much farther than 2 miles so this suites me and most of the guys I fly with just fine. I do have 1.3 on a long range wing, but still find that most of my flights stay within about 2 miles.
Not sure why everyone wanted to build this money pit. Now everything is much smaller and fpv is better advanced. Dollar for dollar, that is one over priced toy. Nice video, strange no landing gear for all the money spent.
Gary Ferguson Jr We flew it a couple times with the 28 can size motors then stepped up to the 35 can size motors. Now you almost don't even have to throw it. She just kind of takes off out of your hand near WOT.
Couldn't ask for a better maiden flight. Congratulations on a job well done!
Thanks we had a blast doing it and we are trying to work on a deal to get us more things to build and review.
Congratulations for the successful maiden :)
It flies like a champ! This plane is definitely a winner :)
Thanks for sharing and happy midweek

Thanks again.
Those triblade props are gorgeous
Great flying guys!!!
Id just like to say thats for your videos youve both done great.
Keep up the good work SUBSCRIBED
I noticed your talon in the background, Id love to see more about your talon build
+andrew hodgkinson I would love to do a build video on one as well, it's just not in the cards for us at the moment.

Well done. My only suggestion is paint a black pinstripe over the red/white boarders. It would make it look even better
Great videos on the MTD, thank you!!
Ordered mine yesterday from Charles. I might use a 6S 3-blade 9x5 setup from some turboprop like take off power!
Lovely, thanks - learned a lot from your MTD videos.

What kind of paint u use in the nose and tail?
Very nice, thanks for share it, wich motors and prop are you using?
+Sergio Giaccone 3530 SK3 motors at about 1000kv on 4s with 9x7x3 CW, CCW

I just got this plane and its huge, anybody know of retracts or wheels for it?
what type of aerofoil is it?
+Die Segel that would be a question for myflydream
hello i would like to buy one of these mtd planes im in belgium, can you help me please?thanks in advance
3530 SK3 motors at about 1000kv on 4s with 9x7x3 CW, CCW
Oh and just a heads up, the link to aglaerial.com is not working.
Yeah our site is down for maintenance as we rebuild it with a different service. We hope to have it back up very soon
lion39 Site is back up, and almost back to full strength. Sorry I didn't comment sooner about this.
do you know the total weight?,
+Sergio Giaccone I dont recall. The plane was sold right after this was shot. I think Brandon weighed it in on of the previous build videos.
+Sergio Giaccone mine weighs 8.5 lb with 8000mah battery and all electronics plus camera

that pan tilt is way to big
