Yes, Anastasia was very well received in Russia when it was released. The Cold War had just ended a couple of years ago and Russian characters in Western movies up to that point were often stereotyped bad guys or have a specific drunk, violent archetype. For a major American studio to produce an animated musical with lovable, down-to-earth Russian characters was a huge welcome to the Russian audience.

Anastasia is one of the few animated films of the 1990’s that tried to copy Disney’s formula and actually managed to make it work. Because unlike Thumbelina and other films like Quest For Camelot,it takes the Disney elements and add’s its own degree of charm and likability to it instead of just taking the elements and stripping them down to be Diet-Disney instead.

Anastasia's better, definitely, even if the attempts to be like Disney are so obvious and sometimes glaring, to say nothing of the inaccuracies. The parts that work still hold up, and thankfully the stage version ironed out the flaws prominent. (Although while the cast recording may not feature 'Dark of the Night' proper, it does contain part of the song's melodies in one of its own songs when the main characters are preparing to leave Russia.)

Anastasia: Engaging story (despite being historically inaccurate), a charismatic and three dimensional protagonist, wonderful music, great supporting cast, well developed romance and, even though it follows the Disney formula, it keeps the Don Bluth touch.
Thumbelina: Weak and inconsistent story, a more child friendly tone, a bland protagonist being nothing but a worthless crybaby, annoying and useless supporting cast, cheesy songs and poorly developed romance. The only good thing about this movie is the animation and the song Let me be your wings.
Definitely, Anastasia is a much superior movie.

They made Ariel a far more interesting/proactive character than her HCA counterpart. And say what you will about Frozen vs The Snow Queen, the characters in Frozen and more memorable/well rounded. I feel like they would make Thumbelina a more engaging character and more proactive in her own story.

@@brandonmclendon5368 I LOVE The Hunchback of Notre Dame. However, the one thing that can kill that movie is the gargoyles. They are incredibly out of place and because they barely interact with the environment that they are in, they can easily be written out of the movie. They only serve as comic relief and their brand of comedy is often jarring. Like, in the last third of the movie, we see Paris in flames as Kyrie Eleison is sung by an ominous choir, then a few seconds later, we get a comedic song about getting the girl.

I remember loving Thumbelina as a kid, watching it whenever I was at my grandparents. Though over the years, my perspective of animated films have gotten much better, and Thumbelina doesn't look all that appealing anymore. It does have string animation and a good use of colors, but it doesn't hide the cutesy tone and plot-holes.
But out of all the Bluth films during the 90s, Anastasia is his stongest. A film that looks as though something Disney "could" have done, but Bluth made that film work. When I learned about the real events of Anastasia in school, it did make me think about the movie and it's significance in today's pop culture; more specifically, in the animation community and those who truly love the film. For what it is, it's one of the finest examples of Don Bluth's works
If Titan A.E.'S failure didn't persuade him to quit directing, we could have gotten more films from Bluth.
Also, nice touch with the Kingdom Hearts music 😁👌

I would say that Anastasia and The Prince of Egypt were the only non-Disney animated musicals of the 90s that actually worked. As we saw with Rock-a-Doodle, Rover Dangerfield, Once Upon a Forest, We're Back! A Dinosaur Story, A Troll in Central Park, Thumbelina, The Pebble and the Penguin, Pippi Longstocking, Quest for Camelot, and The King and it didn't work. FernGully-The Last Rainforest, The Swan Princess, Cats Don't Dance kinda did okay with doing a musical formula but not as well as Anastasia and The Prince of Egypt.

Thumbelina is a classic and I hate when people bash it and don't understand the story. First off, it's VERY accurate to the original Hans Christian Andersen fairytale and I applaud it for doing it well while being it's own thing. And I think it has a very well done acceptance of who you are as a message since Thumbelina is constantly being told who to be and how beautiful she is or isn't and she stands up for herself and tells the toad, the mole, the mouse, and the beetle off in the end and she gets rewarded with a prince for it. It's a cutesy movie with Prince Cornelius being less of the focus than Thumbelina growing up and not taking crap from anyone who tells her she's weak or ugly or they feel entitled to her. I think so many people miss out on that message. Also the songs are still really good, Marry the Mole is so goofy that I can't help but love it and Yer Beautiful Baby is fun too and Let me Be Your Wings is a lovely duet. Julie Benson gets to sing a lot more as Thumbelina than she did as Ariel, so that's a point in the movie's favor in my personal opinion.
And Anastasia is one of my favorite animated movies of all time because the romance is so fun and I love the songs and characters. It's one of the most beautiful animated movies still. I know it's not accurate to history but I really enjoy it.

I use to watch Thumbelina a lot too, and I do agree, seeing it as an adult, I question why I loved that film in the first place. I think it may be because of the songs, which I would sing from time to time, and the animation was fantastic. Just the movements and the colours, it was just so magical, even if it was a Disney-Knock-off.
But I loved Anastasia the most, had been since I was little, still do today. I even used the song that played at the start of the end credits “At the Beginning” as my graduation song. I’ll always remember that moment, when I was asked to collect my awards and certificates as the song plays with a slideshow of me during my time at secondary school. Secondary school may not have been the best for me for a number of reasons, but there are things that will always make me look back at the times I had there like the friends I made or the shows, music, anime, and video games I experience during that time, and “At the Beginning” was the song that signifies that my long, painful, but fun, and happy school days may be over, but the best days of my life is yet to come.

Thumbelina is like the caricature of Disney. Everything Disney's harshest critics say about their movies is true about this one - the cuteness is overdone to the point of being sickening, the musical numbers feel overly peppy and fake, and any lessons they try to throw in are preachy and even faker.

    • @kingandrewcecil348
      @kingandrewcecil348 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agree. Even in "Thumbelina" it's lead character is a literal Disney Princess caricature rather than an actual character, since Thumbelina herself basically represents all the stereotypes that is basically associated with the Disney Princesses but without any of stuff that make the Disney Princesses great characters in the first place.
Even Giselle from "Enchanted", who is an intentional Disney Princess caricature, is a far more developed character than Thumbelina, and that's saying something.

I began to like Bluth's films from the 80s more which are more mature like "The Secret of NIMH" and "All Dogs Go to Heaven". While I like the song "Let Me Be Your Wings", "Thumbelina" isn't as good as I remember it being as a kid.
As for "Anastasia", I honestly hadn't seen the film until a few years ago while I was in college, and I gotta say, I thought it was great. The cast is much more likable (especially Anya and Dimitri), the songs are very memorable (especially the Oscar-nominated "Journey to the Past"), and the animation is amazing. Plus, it has more three-dimensional characters compared to Bluth's other films at the time as well as more heart. Along with that, the film tries to avoid the overused "cuteness" that was in "Thumbelina" and "A Troll in Central Park".
So in conclusion, "Anastasia", despite being as historically inaccurate as Disney's "Pocahontas", is better than "Thumbelina". It has better characters, better songs, and a better story.

You forgot to mention that despite Don Bluth got his glory back with Anastasia, but his next film: Titan A.E. bombed massively at the box office, which caused him to sell his idea of Ice Age to Blue Sky and retire from the animation industries forever. Although he made a campaign for his Dragon's Lair movie, but it didn't have any progress.

It's awesome having you onboard KP!
As for me, I vastly prefer "Anastasia." It's nowhere near one of my favorite animated films, but it at least got the job done with its characters, soundtrack, and animation. Even Rasputin was somewhat entertaining, despite being out of place for the story. I could go without Bartok though.
"Thumbelina" felt scatterbrained with its story and most of the characters were uninteresting. That harlequin bird has to be one of my least favorite sidekicks in a movie of this caliber, especially since he could've so easily given Thumbelina a ride back home, but didn't because... plot. The only things I liked about this movie were one or two songs, the animation, and Gilbert Gottfried as the beetle.
BTW I first watched both of these films when I was in college, so I was already a bit more critical.

I just discovered this channel so I'm late to the party, but Anastasia is the better film by far.
I've noticed that in general, Bluth's movies aren't that great when it comes to memorable heroines. Maybe that shouldn't be surprising since most of his protagonists are male, but Thumbelina is supposed to be the lead character in the movie that bears her name -- yet she remains a passive damsel throughout. I still remember the review that stated she "makes Snow White and Sleeping Beauty look like Thelma and Louise."
Anastasia, however, IS the heroine of her own story and does have agency, which is why this film and "The Secret of NIMH" (the other Bluth film with a memorable female lead) are my favorites among his works.

I actually like Anastasia better, since it should've disserved it's place as part of the Walt Disney animation line up back then, along with the Land Before Time, an American Tail, We're Back a Dinosaur's story, Quest For Camelot, and even the Iron Giant. That would've agreed for Don Bluth's Anastaisa. Heck even I think some TV shows should join the Disney Family too, like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Thomas the Tank Engine, the Magic School Bus, and even the most common preschool show and my favorite, Dragon Tales.

Do you want that bloated corporation to continue monopolizing the entire entertainment industry? They've produced some good stuff, but acquired far more in recent years, and that enables them to stash loads of stuff away that otherwise wouldn't be. An American Tail, The Land Before Time and All Dogs Go To Heaven is the whole reason movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid and Mouse Detective even exist, or the entire slew of movies these gave way for. If they continue to do what they did with Fox, there will be less and less of that to keep them in line.

Thumbellina DID have one saving grace. When it premiered theatrically, it was accompanied by an Animaniacs short. Though, frankly, I wonder how many kids, like me, were suckered into having to beg their parents to take them to such a lousy movie just to see Yakko, Wakko, and Dot bigger and louder. There's 5 minutes of greatness followed by 80 minutes of substandard storytelling and awful songs covered up by a wasted effort of too good for the source material animation. And, like the "I'm Mad" short was only a few months away from being on the actual show. It wasn't on the video release, but on the plus side, you just had to buy an Animaniacs Sing-a-Long VHS instead of having a crap movie you'd never actually watch beyond the short.

Never saw Thumbelina but I did see Swan Princess.
I loved Anastasia and while being historically inaccurate, it was all for the better to tell a story of a lost princess trying to find out about her past while avoiding a curse that claimed her family.
Though when Anastasia found her Grandmother, the movie did stop its momentum until the final Rasputin battle scene.
Bluth's Disney heritage shines through with Anastasia and I noticed that since I was a big fan of Disney Animation films back in the 90s.
Also knew about Bluths films like American Tail and the Land before Time movies and knew that Bluth only worked on the first films and not the sequels.
Rasputin was the best part of the film and I loved the dark of the night

No question about it Anastasia is 100 times better! Don Best work was Anastasia. It was great storytelling fit the Disney formula but also had great story development and character development all around the board. The Whole the story is in historically inaccurate. However it never was intended to be written to be historically accurate. It was always intended to be a fictional adaptation. Newsflash people if you want an actual real story of the Romanov watch the history channel. The fictional story of Anastasia was always supposed to be a fictional story. Even though the real Anastasia body wasn’t found yet back in 1997 it was almost pretty obvious that she was probably not alive anymore. No one wrote this with the intent of this being realistic and legitimately possible. Because again it’s a fictional story line of something that really happened an adaptation a what if if you will where she gets to live and get a happy ending. It was a well thought out story and still to this day holds up very well. Despite the real story not getting a happy ending that doesn’t mean we can’t have a fictional story of it getting a happy ending.

I like both, but honestly I like Thumbelina ALOT more since I grew up with it more, Thumbelina and Cornelius are so adorable together and are one of my favorite Bluth couples along with Dirk and Daphne as well. :) (I don't know if it's more of a girl thing, since I'm one of those types of girls who loves cute movies like this, even if I'm older now, I've always loved the animation, the songs and everything. :)
Sure the plot is cheesy but I love the characters, ESPECIALLY Thumbelina who's my favorite, I actually just watched a few scenes of Berkley Beetle in memory of Gilbert Gottfried in it again years later, and OMG, I find him absolutely HILARIOUS as Berkley now that I'm alot older and didn't really understand him as a kid, most people would be weirded out by him flirting with Thumbelina, but he became one of my favorite characters in the film next to her and Cornelius, he's so funny as him though! (And yes, is it weird I actually kinda ship him and Thumbelina, (of course, after her and Cornelius),. XD The running gag of him going "HIYA TOOTS!" =D to Thumbelina, just the way he says it and everything for no reason whenever he just shows up in a scene out of complete nowhere is just so funny to me, I DIE laughing everytime he's on screen saying it now! XD
Gilbert as Berkley then: "HIYA TOOTS!" =D
*Me watching as a kid: pure confusion being a stupid dumb kid not understanding ANYTHING happening on screen*
Gilbert as Berkley now that I'm older watching the movie years later: "HIYA TOOTS!" =D
    *Me now: *WEEZE*
    (Also, R.I.P. Gilbert...)
All the others though weirded me out with her, (The Toad and Mr. Mole, ). but I still enjoy it and the songs ESPECIALLY. :)

MrJohnffrey87 because Fox actually let Bluth be himself with the movie, and let him return to his usually dark formulas, unlike Warner Bros, which was forcing Don to be cutesy to appeal to the young audience that it was to the point that it felt like he was talking down to the audience, which are big reasons why Rock-a-Doodle, Thumbelina, A Troll in Central Park, and The Pebble and the Penguin bombed.

Anastasia was the one I saw more often both growing up and now. I saw Thumbelina twice in my life. Anastasia I saw in theaters...and in school...and eventually my family got a VHS copy. Ironically that these two movies were considered Disney knock-offs, but now after Disney bought Fox, ironically both of them and a few others are kinda now unofficial family members of Disney now. Weird since in Mexico (or I am not the only one?)Thumbelina was distributed by Warner Bros.
