    One of my favorite Flesicher stories was when Walt Disney talked with director Richard Fleischer about directing the studio's first Live-Action film at their actual studio. Fleischer said he couldn't take the job without first consulting with his father Max, as Disney and Fleischer were fierce competitors and Dick didn't want to insult his dad. Instead, Max was gracious and told Dick, "Obviously, you should take the job. Do me a favor and send this message to Walt. Tell him he has excellent taste in directors."

    • @BlazeHeartPanther
      @BlazeHeartPanther 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Richard even said to Walt that "You do know who I am, don't you?" and Walt was like "Yes" Richard would then say "Why do you want me, of all people, to direct this big picture?" Walt would tell him how him how impressed he was with how he directed Bobby Driscoll in the film The Happy Time. Bobby had been in a few films prior to that, some in which Disney did like Song of the South, So Dear To My Heart, and Treasure Island (would go on to voice Peter in Peter Pan). Walt would tell him "If anyone can make an actor out of Bobby Driscoll has got to be a great director"

    I’ll always have a soft spot for this movie. The only time I’ve seen it was projected onto a large wall in the cafeteria of my elementary school in 1977. It was quite an experience at the time! The school was torn town 20 years ago but the memories of that viewing are still fresh on the mind. Despite its flaws, I still love it and think kids should see it. ;)

    Actually, I saw this WELL before "Snow White", as this movie played regularly on T.V.. Was featured many, many times on the Family Film Festival (KTLA Channel 5) in Southern California. Max Fleischer's son, Richard , would go on and direct the live action "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" for Walt Disney!

    • @RayPointerChannel
      @RayPointerChannel 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The surface impression is that GULLIVER was Fleischer's "answer" to SNOW WHITE. The is a superficial conclusion and not entirely accurate. While Fleischer had the vision for animated features as early as 1934, Paramount vetoed them due to their financial struggles with a series of bankruptcies in the 1930s. They became financially stable under Barney Balaban, who turned the company around. While Fleischer pioneered the longer format animated cartoon in the two Popeye Specials in 1936 and 1937, It was when SNOW WHITE premiered in New York in February 1938 that Paramount reconsidered. After the one month box office report was made known, Paramount Head, Barney Balaban saw an open window for Christmas 1939 when there would be no competition with Disney and ordered an animated feature from Fleischer for release 18 months later. So it was Balaban who was really behind this, and Fleischer, who had wanted to do a feature for four years was eager to comply.

    10:56 So true, I think, out of all the characters, Gulliver has the most depth. He actually tried to stop the violence and only pulled Blefescu's ships because they weren't listening to him, "Must I make you listen?!"
    12:56 I don't think they get a say, most marriages between the Monarch's children is arranged for them.
    14:50 Heigh Ho (I do get All's Well in my head while I'm at work sometimes).
    15:00 Whistle While You Work
    15:09 Silly Song
    15:20 Someday My Prince Will Come (on a side note, I Hear A Dream would've had a bigger soft punch if someone was listening. Maybe if he had a kid in his lap...wait, how about Gabby in one of Gulliver's pockets?).
    15:26 One Song ("Sing Faithful and Forever together as one song." There's a clue there).

    Every time I watch any adaptation of Gulliver's Travels, it's always the Lilliput story. I'll admit my favorite Gulliver story is the one where he ends up on a floating island inhabited by mad scientists. I really enjoyed the absurdity of their research and inventions, making fun of the advancements in science at the time. Gulliver himself was starting to lose his mind at that point too. It was a delight to read.

    I’m taking a class on animation history, and I found out that Walt Disney made “An Old Mill” for practice on doing dramatic scenery for “Snow White” in three years.
    Now the Fleischer Studios cartoons were still doing goofy cartoons before making this movie. They went into it without any practice of experience.

      Considering the momentum built up by the two Popeye Specials, GULLIVER seems like a loss of energy by comparison, and aside from the Fleischer name, the audience may have felt a bit let down, even though it grossed $3 Million in its initial one month release, and made $1.5 Million in profit, off setting its final coast of $1.5 Million.

Just imagine, you go to "Gulliver's travels" to see a familiar plot, but instead see a boy and a bunch of workers rebel against authorities (Though, what surprised me, is that despite King and his henchmen are portrayed negatively, they have more personality, than workers resembling clay figures)

    ❤💖 To be honest, I admired the works of Fleischer Studios with their cartoons like Betty Boop and Popeye and their first two animated films Gulliver's Travels and Mr. Bug Goes to Town. I truly loved 😍 the animation because they do look beautiful 😍 with the human characters like the giant and the humans in Mr Bug do look and capture some realism and the other comedic characters have a subtle cartoony animation even by 2020's standards and it has aged very well and quite comparable to Disney's early 1930's animation.
    Flesicher Studios could've have some potential to become Disney's next first rival animated studio and wished they could've made more animated films before Don Bluth and DreamWorks were involved decades later if it wasn't for the management, creative differences between the two co founders and World War 2. They may not be the best animation studio but still delivered something unique and good in their own charm. 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤

    3:00 I kinda want to contest that. While this part of the movie is indeed prolonged, both as a kid and today it's one of my favorite parts of the movie, just from the visual spectacle and the typical Fleisher 'Million little things happening on screen.' While I’m aware that mr bug goes to town was major bomb in theaters and the Fleischer brothers were at odds during that time, I always wondered why Paramount never made another animated movie until 1973 Charlottes web. After they left, paramount formed Famous studios and made works like little lulu, Casper the friendly ghost, and more. When disney went back to feature films with Cinderella, it was a hit. I was surprised that nobody like Paramount, Warner bros, or mgm ever tried to make a movie of their own during that period. I felt they had a lot more talent and ambition as Disney did. Sure, they had their own cartoon franchises but It was shame we didn’t see any animated movie from them during that period.

    • @brockpifer9929

      @@Smacgregor88 the reason Warner Bros never made an animated was because of budgets. Warners never had the extremely large budgets like Disney. MGM did have higher budgets than Warners. But I don’t know about MGM. Probably from budgets too

    • @generalgrievous3731
      @generalgrievous3731 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Probably because, back then, there was no Oscar for feature-length animated movies. So Warner Bros and MGM just stuck to churning out animated shorts, which are safer / less risky since you don't have to invest that much into them. If ten of them are really successful, it's okay if one flops.

    • @brockpifer9929
      @brockpifer9929 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@generalgrievous3731 I always find it interesting that Warner Bros had always have budget issues. They still have to this day because they have an issue with over advertising everything. I feel like they spend more money on the marketing and advertising than the actual project itself. Like with Space Jam: A New Legacy. It had several merchandise. The movie itself was ALMOST a box office bomb. The box office money managed to increase and now it’s over the budget. Looney Tunes: Back In Action didn’t reach the budget reach on time with its release because the budget on Back In Action was 80 million. But the box office managed to only get 68.5 million. It never reached the budget deadline. Warners also had a problem with paying people. Like with Mel Blanc, as he was getting famous for being the man of 1000 voices, Warners had always wanted other people besides Mel to voice the characters. Because Warners didn’t want to pay Mel the money. It’s just I feel Warners is more greedy with their money

      I definitely agree. Beauty and the Beast’s 30th anniversary is in November. The timing couldn’t be any better. I’d also like to see him review the Broadway musical version. There’s 2 recordings of the show on TH-cam, one from the 1995 US Tour in Los Angeles and one from the 2001 US Tour.

    Regarding the over-long gag sequences with little story, such as the scene where Gulliver is tied up and moved into town, it should be noted that Fleischer studios was still probably working in their usual headspace of 7 minute shorts, rather than full, cinematic experiences. The film then comes together more like a series of self-contained shorts and set-pieces, strung together by a very thin plot. Beautifully animated, but lacking the true cinematic cohesion of Snow White.

    I love the design of Lilliput. It might be intentionally disney-esque, but it's got the fairytale charm with its whimsical, not entirely realistic, yet believable architecture down perfectly. I love how there are barely any right angles. Everything is smooth, but twisty.
    And the geography is surprisibgly sound compared to the cartooniness of its inhabitants. You can instantly tell where on the island a scene takes place from the backgrounds alone.
    The settings are definutely the strong point of the Fleischer animated features, especially in Buggity Goes To Town where they tackle a modern settings, way before Disney dared to do the same in 101 Dalmatians.
    It's a shame the studio went down so early. Even w/o WW2 I dozbt they could've competed with Disney fir much longer, but it would've been nice to see at least 1 or 2 more of the worlds they might have created.

    After all, this is a medieval time setting where arranged marriages were both the norm and political chess moves.
    Also, marrying for love was something kinda new, only being around for about 150 years at the time.
