Love your style and this video has inspired me to take up a new craft (because you can never gave 2 many crafts)! I furst learned how to make braid from a medieval re-enacter at a history event in bonnie Scotland. She had card circles or octogons with 8 notches and 7 strands knotted like yours. She took the strand 3 notches from the space to the space, crossing 2 strands. Move circle/octogon card clockwise or anticlickwise (it doesnt matter button keep the pattern, keep rotating in same direction), and repeat many many times. This summer I learned about card weaving which can be used to make a flat braid, say for a medieval belt with more complicated patterns.
I make medieval clothes & need to make this kind of braid for a kamakura period project- this is literally the perfect tutorial and so clear! I can't wait to try it out.

I have done this before with a little Japanese kit that came in the MOST fabulous tin, and you have foam pads with slots cut in & you can do REALLY intricate patterns using embroidery thread or say 4ply cotton. I did a couple but I found it so hard to follow the written instructions & pictures, THIS was a game changer! I know this is an old comment of yours, but I was so happy to see another older person like myself finding this teaching method so enjoyable👍👍💞

You can use embroidery thread or even say 4ply cotton for bracelets. I find a cotton thread is not only easier to work with but makes a sleeker finish. But I get why you use yarn in class, it’s cheaper etc. Thanks for teaching an old doggy new tricks👏🫶🤗
Really well done tutorial. I've watched a lot of videos on the kumihimo basics. You were easy to follow and gave lots of great tips, some I had to learn on my own by playing since none of the other videos explained it as well as you. I'm 63 and really enjoy the weaving part (not loading the beads so much) and I'm excited to incorporate kumihimo braids into my needle bead woven jewelry designs. Wow, thanks for the feedback! As a middle school teacher, success is based on how effectively I can communicate something to a WHOLE group at once. Kumihimo is something I do with every student, and I have literally taught it to THOUSANDS of kids. I've streamlined the instructions over the years and pared it down to the basics. This tutorial is great! It's easy to understand and follow along. I personally found constantly combing out the strands I was working with tedious, so I used bobby pins to make makeshift bobbins. The bobbins have just enough weight to help the strands stay mostly detangled with minimal effort and I can unravel more string as needed. I'm looking forward to trying out the different patterns!

I put it in the search bar on youtube and to my surprise I came across this video. 8 years ago you taught my middle school class to do this in our free time, it is still super fun and addicting. glad I came across this.

I learned to do this but it's was very difficult manually and I invented this way with the circle to make it more easy for anyone. You might show how to end while working on your Kumihimo by bringing down just the first right hand cord leaving three at the bottom and one at the top. When you pick it up again. You will see that now you move the left cord up to the left and resume.

You can rotate the disk clockwise, counter-clockwise, or change it up: It doesn't matter!
You can rotate clockwise or counter clockwise, just always start by moving the TOP RIGHT string!

Try it! The strings are always moving and sometimes you need to reposition or adjust so fixed numbers won't work.
