  • We discuss some of Stoke City Football Club's history in this video. We begin with the club's location, home ground, and founding story. We then discuss the club's nicknames, crest, and important events. And we close with discussing noteworthy players, managers, and stats/records.
    The video is not all-encompassing but it hopefully provides some interesting information about Stoke City FC.

    Some additional info to add courtesy of Stoke supporters on Twitter:
    Via @oatcakescfc (twitter.com/oatcakescfc/status/981226455727312901): " Not sure about the reference to Michael Owen though; Alan Hudson would've been a better pick for a famous player. The Arsenal mention seems to come from more of a Gunner's perspective, but nothing to get too upset about."
    Via @JohnLeonard1908 (twitter.com/JohnLeonard1908/status/981231199548035075 & twitter.com/JohnLeonard1908/status/981232233255264256): "Stoke-upon-Trent town was merged with 5 other Potteries towns to form city of Stoke-on-Trent" & "Banks was not displaced by Shilts as England goalie in ‘70. He was a back-up Banks was 1st choice at time of accident in ‘72."

    Great video mate. A few more things to add are; The £250,000 worth of damage was caused by a strong wind blowing the roof off one of the stands, Stokes ground (The Bet365) and Port Vales ground (Vale Park) are only 3.8 miles apart, Stoke Ramblers originally played in Claret and Blue hoops before adopting the Red and White stripes, Stoke have only ever had two managers that weren't British or Irish, Stoke have a big rivalry with Manchester United and over the years have had lasting rivalries with clubs from all over the country and the world, some of the most notable being Manchester United, Port Vale, Birmingham City, West Brom, Arsenal, Wolves, Coventry City, Everton, Leeds, West Ham, Cardiff City, Ajax as well as some notable friendships with clubs such as Rangers and more recently St Pauli. The friendship between Rangers and Stoke goes back to 1937 when 30 minors were killed in an explosion in Chesterton and to raise funds for the victims families Stoke played Rangers in front of over 30,000 spectators at the Victoria ground and more than £2000 was raised. At the end of the game, which finished 0-0 club president Sir Francis Joseph presented Rangers with a Loving Cup to thank them and to commemorate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth with the request that it should be used to toast to the health of the reigning monarch prior to the first home game of each new year, a tradition that carries on to this day.

    Incredible video on the history of Stoke City. I'm from there myself and a supporter of them. Stoke seems like the kind of club currently that hires great players only to sell them to better clubs or to squander their abilities. Hopefully we can get better but I'm honestly not too sure. Great video!

    Vale are by far our biggest rivals fella.

    • @TheSoccerTavern
      @TheSoccerTavern  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to know. Any more details you can share about the rivalry?

    • @davidtilstone4814
      @davidtilstone4814 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With only about 5 miles between clubs, the rivalty goes back over 100 years. Look up a guy called leigh Richmond Roose. He played in goal for Stoke during the turn of the last century. He fell out with the board and later in his career, turned out for Vale at stokes ground. On producing a stoke top under his Vale top, as a dig to the club, he was chased off the pitch by 100 fans trying to throw him in the river trent (there's a book on him called Lost in France) Also, watch the Vale 0 Stoke 2 game from 1993 to get a feel for it.

      @@TheSoccerTavern Also, not sure how much you're interested but I'm a Stoke supporter from Stoke on Trent. Stoke-On-Trent is a city made up of many towns that amalgamated by royal decree to become the city of Stoke-On-Trent, as you mentioned. Stoke-upon-Trent is actually just one component town of this city and not the same as Stoke-On-Trent. Stoke-upon-Trent = just the town of Stoke, whereas Stoke-On-Trent = the whole city, including the town of Stoke. Confusing I know!
      Stoke town is not the biggest/most central of the towns either, that would be Hanley - but as the administrative HQ were based in Stoke-upon-Trent, the newly formed city took the name of Stoke instead of becoming Hanley-On-Trent . Stoke town is where Stoke City FC are from. Port Vale, the other professional club in the city, are from the town of Burslem in the north of the city, and used to be called Burslem Port Vale before they dropped the Burslem from the name. So in actuality, despite Stoke City adding the "City" to the name after amalgamation, really we should be called Stoke Town FC - but I'm sure it annoys vale fans so it's a good thing we're called Stoke City. :)
