Tony Pulis sits down alongside Sam Allardyce & Natalie Pike to discuss incredible career in football from the early days at Bournmouth & Gillingham to getting Stoke City into Europe.
The former Stoke manager talks about his time at the club, The importance of making the Britannia stadium a horrible place to play and unlocking Rory Delap's long throw.
Tony also chats about how football has changed throughout the years with better facilities, better nutrition, however the downside being VAR and how everything is now scrutinised.
They then talk run in's with Arsene Wenger, advice from Sir Alex Ferguson and spending time with Carlo Ancelotti in Madrid.

Definitely a PL legend. Everyone HATED playing Stoke. That's an achievement and compliment. There has been no other team like them, they took it to the absolute extreme.
Buzzing for this one... Tony Pulis' Stoke City side were iconic.
A real hard working team under Tony.
His side ruffled the feathers of even the best sides with how physical and direct they were. Defending a corner or one of Rory Delap’s rocket throw ins against them must have felt like a bantamweight taking on a heavyweight with players like Robert Huth, Peter Crouch, Ryan Shawcross, and Kenwyn Jones.
@@NoTippyTappyFootballyes and we loved them for that. There was more to Stoke though. We had some good players and they adhered to a set of very specific instructions and a rigid game plan. Tony could make room for the right player though. Ricardo Fuller for example, he was our Cantona in may ways.

The pulis era at stoke was phenomenal the way he did things and everything we achieved under him I’ll forever be grateful for.. the day we got promoted the fa cup final the Europa league.. the list goes on.. ❤😊
I have been supporting Stoke since the year I was asked if I would like to go with my best mate's dad to go with his son to see Stoke play. I said yes and to see people Like Gordon Banks was wonderful at the start of the Waddington years. My mate went on to be part of the 1-0 to the Arenel gang and I have been with Stoke ever since. Pulis played the type of football that got us success at we all need to remember that yet Wado was so entertaining.
Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home!!!!!......... great memories from Tony's time at Stoke. People call him a dinosaur but in many ways top managers are still catching up to what he, and a few other 'dinosaurs' were doing 15-20 years ago. As a Stoke fan, the irony of Arsenal's current routine with the set piece coach on the touch line, and the importance they now place on set peices makes me chuckle. Playing center backs at full back is also considered to be a modern innovation of 'great' thinkers like Arteta. These days, when you have a trendy club with a foreign manager and better players doing it, it's considered genius. When teams like Stoke were doing that 15-20 years ago it was considered an abomonation. Something only unsophisticated, rugby loving pleb teams would sully themselves with. The ideas of these dinsosuars have kept medium sized clubs like Stoke and others in the prem for decades and clubs like Arsenal have become title contenders. Funny old game isnt it 😆
Was it stoke v arsenal where a defender kicked the ball out for a corner, rather than kicking it out for a throw in?😅
@@kippertrace5808 Yes, a few teams did it but from memory it was Wenger/Arsenal that started doing it first. In fact, most home games pretty much every team did it at one point. The pitch at the Brit was as norrow as the rules would allow, so Rory could throw bullets to pretty much the far side of the area from anywhere in the opponents half. It was less effective at away games but at our place it caused so much chaos 😂
Both of these managers have amazing stories and great careers. But when they talk high levels tactics and criticise the intricate art of tactics, pressing, building from the back, setting traps, playing a high line, keeping possession as defensive tool. Point is...we would never win any CLs or develop anywhere near..or have any sort of success with these backwards tactics. Passion and desire is their philosophy. We SHOULD have all tiers to play out for the back, play inverted fullbacks and develop our tactical play and philosophy. Why do we think the Italians and the Spanish side dominated Europe in the 90s and 00s before the foreign influence helped us evolve.
Point is...I respect there way of playing but stop being critical of the "Tippy happy" football....as would never have won anything without this evolution due to the foreign input. Having the best players only to try and play is such a fickle comment!
Totally agree..pulis played 4 centre backs across the back and nobody said it was genius..it worked a treat!
Both of these managers managed Palace and the football was generally bloody awful with some highlight matches. Then we compounded it by rehiring Roy after trying to change. The brand of football by all three had broad brushstrokes similarities and it just does not work anymore. You can see that with their last jobs and what Roy and Moyes had been doing this season. You give the ball away and you don't get it back for 10 minutes. By that time your defense has been ripped apart as the other lot slice through the team. Important to stabilise a club but even that now is harder now because most teams have several star players and can play properly.
Tony Pulis is Legendary.One of the top Managers in Stoke's history imo.
Still miss him at Stoke, yes his time had come and Hughes did well for a time, but look how far we've fallen in recent years.
Tony's right about derbies. Merseyside derbies used to be so aggressive and bad tempered. You never see that hunger in derbies anymore. Everyone's respectful and having a nice chat after the games.
It was an absolute riot under Pulis for the most part. When it went sour, it was sad. Absolutely fabulous memories from both of his stints.

Delap's throw-ins were so good, that Wenger has gone to the lengths of trying to get throw-ins outlawed from the game.
Which was fair enough really. Throw ins exist as a quick way to restart the game after the ball goes out of play. They were never intended to be an attacking set piece and “hacking” football by using them as one is against the spirit of the game.

I was in Kent when Tony came to Gillingham. He brought in some excellent players and made a huge impact. Consistently good manager and did much to improve average players at many clubs
Pulis has never been effectively replaced at Stoke - as fans you have to be careful what you wish for
Hughes turned stoke into a much better side for 3 seasons using pulis stalwarts like Whelan, Walters etc soon as the core left we turned to shit
Forget a rainy night in Stoke, how about a snowy afternoon in Salt Lake? If you can do it there, you can do it anywhere.

Very underrated manager success he had with Stoke.
his sides were ok and obviously he kept them up with relative ease but they weren't a good footballing side, they weren't in the class of tony waddington's magnificent mid 70s side with alan hudson, terry conroy, jimmy greenhoff and geoff salmons, that was a brilliant team that would have given wenger's arsenal a run for their money, stoke should have been champions in 1975
True right 74 and 75 was the best with the back 5 defenders local lads 😍😍
The Hughes teams were also better and more enjoyable.

In my opinion they should use VAR like they do in cricket and tennis. Each team manager has 3 reviews or challenges and that's it, that way it would only be used for clear or obvious mistakes.
2 Palace legends!
Two of our former managers at Selhurst Park, and loved both of them, played good honest hard football and it kept us up, top 6 sides feared those sides and we regularly beat them too, Big Sam got Benteke firing, and Tony had Chamakh playing superbly for us, happy days, both left due to the boards lack of ambition and walked out.....
both of them did less than a full season at Palace. They were firefighters. Roy was the one that really stabilised the club.
If any opponent praises you, you're doing it wrong. 👏

I know there’s no need to even bring this up , but with all the discussion of women being in the men’s game and if they are qualified enough to speak on it etc etc , it’s a wonder it doesn’t cross anyone’s mind including mine when listening to Natalie , she really does know her stuff and never looks out of her depth

This is mostly bullshit tbh.
Wenger whinged a lot but justifiably so as I’ve never seen a side on the end of so many games where the opposition set out to kick lumps out of them and been given complete free reign to by refs, while Arsenal got punished for much lesser offences. Probably subconscious bias by the refs because they were the flash, soft foreigners usually up against good, honest British lads rather than deliberate cheating.
The game where Man Utd beat them to end the unbeaten run was one of the most scandalous I’ve seen. United should have had at least two red cards and another half a dozen yellows (being very conservative here) yet somehow Arsenal had more players booked than United (3-2). And to make things worse, the game was decided by one of the most blatant dives you’ve ever seen.
What a weird thing to lie about from Pulis on Wenger. Vieira was long gone from Arsenal (2005) before Stoke joined the PL or Delap joined had even joined Stoke (2006). Odd fella and a bang average manager who isn't fit to zip AW's coat.

Stoke were a dirty side, I went there in 71 to watch Arsenal, and the crowd above were constantly spitting down on us. I got sick of their disgusting behavior, left and went down the pub.
