Ferrari V8 engined Lancia Thema

  • The Lancia Thema 8:32 was so named because it had a 3.0litre Ferrari V8 in its nose. It was also the car Enzo Ferrari chose to be chauffeured around in. After living with it for a few weeks, I can see why..

    Harry, I had three Thema Turbos in the mid to late 90s. The last 2 were the later LS models which I believe were quicker to 60 than the 8.32. Amazing cars that I drove about 40,000 a year in. The turbo was all lag and then hold on for your life. One day I was working at Heinz in West London and what do I see in the guest parking lot but an Italian registered 8.32 so I parked next to it. When I came back to my car at the end of the day there was a business card with a 'nice car' note on it. It was the chair of Heinz Europe. Great cars.

    Well to be fair, that V8 engine was Lancia's to start with. The Ferrari V8 in fact comes from the V8 that Vittorio Jano originally developed for Lancia F1 and sports cars back in the fifties. After Ascari's death, and Lancia subsequent withdrawal from all racing activities, all their stuff was passed to Ferrari, V8 included. Of course Ferrari upgraded and further developed the engine, but it wasn't theirs at its origin ;) so you could say that with the Thema it came back home

      Cool bit of information. Thx for that. - The car reminds me my youth time. My friend Paulo bought one when he was 19 and just had his license for a few month. He scratched all of his money together (which was about 10.000 DM at that time - roughly 5000 Euros converted). It was a beautiful car and we all admired it - but unfortunatly just for 2 weeks. He needed to maintain the engine and some other stuff (Plugs, Filters, etc.) and as he was still broke after buying his car he needed to sell it to the repair shop it was getting fixed. - That was a sad day but I will always remember the time we had with that special and for us very expensive car.

My dad had an untegrale evo, my uncle an evo 2, while my other two uncles had a 155 silverstone and a quattroporte. - 5 minutes driving while filming just his face literally having nothing to say about dynamics
      - 2 minute conclusion about how weird the car is (even if it really isn't)
      Of course this would all be peppered with some "FOR XXX thousand dollars!", "All cars should have this", "These unlabelled buttons, which you would not know what to do if you didn't watch this video, but this is what they do". Stretching every little bit of the video till infinity.

    What happened to Lancia? Motoring journalists always slated them and always said why would anyone buy one when they could have a beemer or merc! I remember this car and remember all the Italian cars of the time. Because of motoring journalists they were almost worthless before they were even sold. Don’t get me wrong, they all enthused about how they drove but then came the caveats by the dozen and it scared people off, that of course and the rust issue which by the time this came out was more a myth than actual but it was only ten years previously that one could see Alfa Suds new with rust and people did not forget.
    Thankfully that left folks like me with great driving cheap cars which were so much more fun than anything else at the time! Great review of a great car Harry, this was a poster car for me back in the day.

The Turbo is not as special as the 8:32 but it is almost as quick, and a lot cheaper to run. One of the most exclusive cars I've owned, and a lot better than most critics seem to say it is. Fantastic review from Harry; love the more obscure cars that you don't normally get to see. That rear spoiler is mad!

    I had an uncle who had an 8.32 in red. He bought it new in 1990 and kept it for many years. The car was sold during his unfortunate cancer treatment. One month after he passed away (in 2008).

  • @DoctorDARKSIDE
    @DoctorDARKSIDE 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The V8 in the 8:32 doesn't have the characteristic high-pitched engine note of the 308/Mondial because the crankshaft was modified from flat-plane to 90-degree resulting in different firing order and a more muscle-car tone - legend says that this was done to differentiate the 8:32 from the typical Ferrari V8 sound, but some facts also point at a more refined engine balance and space constraints in the engine bay.

    • @juststeve5542
      @juststeve5542 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The engine was retuned from the original to have a more useful power curve for a family saloon. Hence it's more refined than Harry expected. You drive it round in a normal rev range, you don't need to ring its neck to get the most performance out of it.
      I don't think changing the crank timing will have much impact on the external size, the big ends are still going to go round in the same circle ;-)

  • @HarryHipster
    @HarryHipster 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    A Ferrari engine with 8 cylinders and 32 valves in an 80's midsized saloon car was quite a sensation at that time. I remember well who bought this car in Germany: very few wealthy and individualistic people e.g. artists, architects, media people, entertainers, comdians (like Thomas Freitag) and of course some Italian car enthusiasts (fashion managers, restaurant owners etc.) drove one. But you rarely got to see one. Sometimes you barely recognized one. Besides the growling V8 sound, the spoiler on the trunk, the 8.32 badges and some other decent items like the stripes, the exhaust pipes or the Campagnolo wheels this car was pure understatement. I was just taking a glimpse on my German auto catalogue from 1988, flipped through some pages and wondered which were the competitors at that time and the arguments against buying this beautiful and tastefully refined power limousine. Apart from the poor quality image (many parts like the cheap and ugly plastic buttons and levers were nearly identical in all cars of the Fiat family from the smallest Uno to the biggest Lancia or the sportiest Ferrari) I assume the price to be one of the main reasons for not buying this jewel. Back then (and just at the beginning), this car cost 72,600 D-Mark, nearly twice as much as the Thema i.e. turbo which was only 38,700 DM at that time and which went only slightly slower in acceleration, but was better balanced due to less weight on the front axle. Cars at the high price level of an 8.32 were much more roomy, comfortable, solid and prestigeous like a BMW 735i for 72,000 or a MB 420 SE for 76,494. And if you wanted a small sports sedan you would most likely favor the famous BMW M3 for 61,900 or the remarkable MB 190 E 2.3-16 for 62,700 over the 8:32. Even bigger, but also very quick: the Audi 200 quattro for 64,935. And let's not forget the Italien competitors, the Alfa 164 or the Maserati Biturbo models. So. the 8.32 remained a splendid, yet very exclusive choice for just a few handpicked car connoisseurs.

    Too bad Marchionne was slowly letting a once glorious brand like LANCIA to die a slow painful death by not giving it more attention and new products like Alfa Romeo. Rebadging big outdated Chrysler products as fake Lancias was a huge mistake. Looks like even after Marchionne's passing, they still don't know what to do with the Lancia brand. What I would like them to do is to let Hyundai buy a stake in FCA for a partnership(as rumored). Get their cost effective Genesis rear wheel drive platform and their compact front engine platform to build modern Lancias that people will want to buy. Position Lancia as the more Luxury oriented as opposed to Alfa Romeo full sporting car brand. Build a new Delta Integrale on the Korean compact car platform added with AWD while taking over the Hyundai's World Rally Championship team slot. Paint it in Martini livery, win races and then we have the return of the legendary Lancia marque.

    • @mpershyn31
      @mpershyn31 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It was not a Marchionne, the death of Lancia started in early 90s. FIAT closed all sporting activities, shelved advanced projects (4WS, 4WD, touch screens, GPS) and concentrated on a different brands.

    • @aftastosk6016
      @aftastosk6016 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The death of Lancia started even before, since the merge of Alfa Romeo to the Grupo Fiat in 1987. The two brands were competitors for decades and they had no idea what to do with Alfa Romeo. At the end they came up with the worst possible solution, creating ALFA LANCIA. The theory was that Alfa will be the "sporting" brand and Lancia the "luxury" brand. It was the death for both brands (Alfas effectively became Fiats with Alfa engines). ThIs is what happens when you let people with zero engineering knowlegde run an automotive industry (Marchionne included).

    • @francisvelasco5404
      @francisvelasco5404 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even if the decline did start before Marchionne, he was not committed to saving the Lancia brand. Lancia brand is too valuable to be just dying a slow death. The Koreans and even the Chinese automakers would do everything to have a brand heritage like Lancia. The last modern Lancias Thesis and Lybra were not exactly good looking. It was queer looking and an acquired taste in terms of design. Should have hired Giugaro for the designs just like the Alfa Brera. . Heck a boxy Italian SUV might look good with a Lancia grille just like the classic Delta Integrale.

    • @mpershyn31
      @mpershyn31 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aftastos K Not true, as Alfa engineering department planned use front wheel drive before 1987. An agreement to use FIAT Tipo 4 platform was done in 1983, all engines were designed by AR engineers, all cars were tested by AR team. By the way the last engine designed by old Arese team was 1750 TBi.
