Indie filmmaker is usually used to describe someone who makes character or story driven pieces. ‘Marriage story’ and ‘little women’ are both examples of those. There’s no explosions, no violence, nothing grandiose.
Indie films are non mainstream movies with limited financial backing and often no studio deals. You can make an action thriller or sci-fi indie film (Pulp Fiction, Safety Not Guaranteed, Ex-Machina, Under the Skin, Seven, Momento, I mean the list goes ON). Yes, indies are often categorized as character driven films and that tends to be because filmmakers will focus the limited resources they do have on building their characters and stories rather than introducing complex VFX/ spectacles. Regardless though, slice of life films aren't the only factors that make a film "indie".
Yeah, that's completely wrong. It simply means a filmmaker who produces films OUTSIDE the studio system. Genre or content have nothing to do with it. In fact, there are probably more indie films made in the horror genre than anything else.
Greta and Noah are characters that would date each other in the movies they direct

Marriage Story is supposedly based on the end of his marriage to Jennifer Jason Leigh. It's a sanitized version, though, because he left Leigh for Gerwig while Leigh was pregnant.
Leigh is 7 years older than he is, while Greta is 14 years younger. So left his pregnant wife for a woman 21 years younger, and then made a movie about it that IMO makes her look like a shrew. A movie for which he is receiving tons of accolades for its "authenticity." I'm sure the whole sordid mess is/was very painful for Leigh

I don't really understand why a $42 million film is considered an indie movie and for Greta to say its not a lot is just blatant lying. Deadpool with cgi was $58 million...
They're probably talking about the films she has made previously (Lady Bird was $10m for example and they made Frances together for $3m)

Basically an "indie" film is anything that's not a superhero sequel.
