How is this the *_FIRST_* time I'm hearing of Lady Bird?!?!? Stephen's description just nearly brought me to tears: "I love the idea of attention and love being the same thing. That another vocabulary that you gave us all in the way to talk about love, and really, paying *_attention_* to other people (because love can be a 4-letter-word that scares us) but *_attention_* is something that we _all must pay_ " I NEED TO SEE THIS FILM IMMEDIATELY.
Omg please do watch it, as well as Little Women (2019) if you get the chance! Greta's my favorite director and both are incredible showcases of her talent, with LW being one of my fav movies. Part of the reason I got immediately on board with Barbie once it was announced was simply cause I heard she was involved (hoping she finally gets a best director award this year cause she still doesn't have one and it's insane). Also Saoirse Ronan stars in both and is AMAZING in both, her and Greta are an incredible duo
Wow, I am unfamiliar with Greta Gerwig as a performer, but I absolutely adore her as a strong, intelligent woman who is a clear leader in her profession! Also, the fact that she loves being a mom is endearing. Congrats and please keep showing us what you can do, Greta!!
Fun fact: she was the lead in How I Met Your Father. (edit: it was How I Met Your Dad) Thank god that was cancelled, else we wouldn't have her as an acclaimed director.
I remember so well that moment of being a girl heading into puberty who suddenly realized that society was going to try to mold me into plastic, to crush my dreams, simply because I was a girl. It began when the boys around me who had been friends started berating all girls as weak and stupid. The worst insults they could say to each other were, "You're like a girl" or "That's so gay!" In Gerwig's movie, Barbie's realization that there was a real, unfair, completely sexist world outside of her happy bubble was the perfect representation of that moment I (and every other girl) experienced. And, the movie was a riot! Haven't laughed so hard in ages. Thank you, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.
I went to see it with my 17 year old niece, not knowing what to expect....and wow! She really told it like it is, not pulling any punches. We had a great aunt/niece conversation after that movie. 🥲
QUEEN she literally made those ultraconservatives MAD AF!!! my aunt made a CAMPAIGN against barbie because it was "against men and family" and was the biggest movie of the year lmaooo. Cant wait for what's next for Greta!
Ben Shapiro nearly had a heart attack ranting about the Barbie movie, and that made people want to watch it even more. Also, this movie wasn't even progressive so IDK why they were so upset. It's moderate, if anything.
Unfortunately she co-wrote Disney’s Snow White due next year and Disney now has an abysmal track record of rewriting and reshooting films to the point they no longer work, she should have avoided working with Disney at all costs
Didn’t believe I’d ever say this but seems like I have to agree with conservatives on that one. Barbie isn’t only terribly written in terms of its storytelling, it’s the black n white thinking and “Us and them”-mentality that makes me actually angry.
An incredible visionary filmmaker! Greta had tons of demands for Warner Bros in making Barbie movie, some of them were almost cut by the studio but she fought hard to make the scenes be in the final cut and at the end of the day, she got what she wanted. Brilliant, they couldn't have pick a better filmmaker to make Barbie 👏
I'd really love to see a Director's Cut though. Yes, she won a lot of fights and managed to make a great film. But she also said she didn't cut much because Matel cut so much for her. There was a lot she couldn't do. As much as I loved the film, I'd love to see the version she couldn't make.
@@leif1075 Oh no, she definitely did NOT have full creative control. Mattel would never allow that with such an important brand. She was able to convince them to let her be realistic with criticisms of the brand because doing so helps redeem it in the public eye, leading to higher brand value and more sales. And that absolutely happened, with Barbie sales skyrocketing after the film. But they didn't let her do whatever she wanted. No idea what they made her cut. I imagine she is probably not allowed to say.
She's so charming, I loved Lady Bird and really liked Little Women, such a beautifully made film and in my home town! I didn't quite connect with Barbie, but am happy for her success.
As talented as she is, she has a wonderful humility about her. A perfect practical joke would be for Cannes organizers to give her a joke scepter that is designed to shatter easily but act like it is the real thing that has been around since the first Cannes and passed from jury to jury.
That might be funny, but for the fact she clearly feels really bad about dropping the NRB award, which takes away all the funny and leaves just plain mean. Also, someone who venerates film like she does is going to know (a) it's a gag and (b) at her expense, immediately, so not just mean but mean at the outset of one of the biggest honours of her impressive life, so triple mean, and u r out of here...😠
Yeah, would be more enjoyable to make it clearly out of an unbreakable plastic - purely for the joke of it, without any pretense of history. She'd appreciate that more, methinks.
It really pissed me off seeing so many leftist/progressive articles just hating on Barbie, expecting Gerwig to have created the end-all be-all feminist opus magnum with this material. Like, the film was literally about the unrealistic expectations of women. And what do women do? Slam with it with unrealistic expectations.
when I see Greta on talk shows she seems to have this kind of nervous energy, like she’s trying to think of what to say or something, and yet she’s such a talented actor and director 🤷
Awwww, Greta... I feel as though I speak for the majority of viewers in saying: You're not alone in secretly wanting to partially-demoralize someone else (even the fabulous Margot Robbie) because of their phenomenal talent or beauty. That's just part of being human, and I *_LOVE_* that you owned up to it. ❤ 💞
"Demoralize" isn't the right word. It's more like "humanize". We tend to idolize people with phenomenal talent or beauty. It's important to remember that they are just humans at the end of the day.
I feel like Greta has such an Old Hollywood-esque face. Like she wouldn’t look out of place superimposed next to Norma Shearer. Even her name sounds old Hollywood.
She has almost a more sincere version of the often forced ROM COM awkward girl thing. But for her it comes off as real which makes her all the more likable.
she reminds me of someone I went on a date with to see how you train your dragon in highschool, who was queer, but trying to be straight, Although maybe I've always been non-binary and I never realized it. I've never felt like I was strongly male or female. I'm attracted to both genders, not equally I'm more attracted to women, but I have a tiny bit of bi-ness in me
Really?!? Even if Margot _is_ into metal music (which is the first time I'm hearing of this), vocal performance is still VERY important. Any famous metal band's vocal lead will tell you that they worked *_EXTREMELY_* hard to get to where they are. It takes a F*CK-ton of work to keep your voice in peak form, *_especially_* if you're professionally screaming. I'm not a metal-head, but I have respect for the craft. As you and everyone else should.
I know they were in college together, but both Greta and Kate McKinnon give off the exact same nervous, rambly energy. I love them, so cute.
Greta was also roommates with Safdie Brothers
Go Greta gerwig❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
She sound like her too 😂
She also works with Adam driver often and I could def see their similarities as well
I was thinking that, didn't realise they went to the same college
How is this the *_FIRST_* time I'm hearing of Lady Bird?!?!?

Same here! I had to look it up and add it to my watch list on Netflix.
it's a wonderful movie
I watch maybe 2 movies a year- and even I saw Ladybird
@@janetownleylol, same
This woman has given me so much this year. So grateful for her.
We need more female directors and producers please 👏👏👏 she's so talented, and so young
She is so endearing!! No wonder her movies are brilliantly endearing!
The humble, identifiable, authenticity of both Greta and Stephen, is just, heartwarming.
Stephen is a national embarrassment, a prattling, hateful, conformist uber liberal ego maniac. People with common sense realize this.
Wow, I am unfamiliar with Greta Gerwig as a performer, but I absolutely adore her as a strong, intelligent woman who is a clear leader in her profession! Also, the fact that she loves being a mom is endearing. Congrats and please keep showing us what you can do, Greta!!
The first thing I saw her in was a little independent film called “Frances Ha.”
Same! I love her in that movie! 💗
She's a wonderful actor as well! She was particularly great in Frances Ha and 20th Century Women. Frances Ha she also co-wrote!
She could show her appreciation getting a award by holding onto it. Instead
Her m a n hands are fumble prone, maybe play for the broncos.
Fun fact: she was the lead in How I Met Your Father. (edit: it was How I Met Your Dad)

Ben Shapiro nearly had a heart attack ranting about the Barbie movie, and that made people want to watch it even more.

What do you have against men and families?
Unfortunately she co-wrote Disney’s Snow White due next year and Disney now has an abysmal track record of rewriting and reshooting films to the point they no longer work, she should have avoided working with Disney at all costs

What a force! As a 43 year old I feel a bit jealous of your success. As a father of two boss women, I love your lead!
An incredible visionary filmmaker! @Sam_on_TH-cam Really WHAT I thought she had full creative control? What exactly did Mattel cut do yiu know?

She is so wonderfully awkward and talented
...and evidently humble. The success of Barbie could go to anyone’s head, whether real or plastic.
@@sidewaysdesign Evidently, she's an actress too.
she's extremely endearing and talented
She is a breath of fresh air...adorable and unaffected!
For such a big director Greta is very unassuming. She doesn't have the boisterous presence I've seen in other directors. Very interesting.
That’s because she has the gift of humility.
Fell in love with her when Frances Ha came out. So happy to see her success ❤
Wonderful movie.
Could this brilliant, multi-talented, multi-faceted woman BE any more afprable, humble & funny???!!!🎉🎉🎉❤
"Afprable"? 😂
She's so charming, I loved Lady Bird and really liked Little Women, such a beautifully made film and in my home town! I didn't quite connect with Barbie, but am happy for her success.
She seems so nervous and very sweet. Very humbled! 💙
She is a global treasure and must be protected at all cost!❤🎉❤
Greta is such a talented film maker. Huge fan
She has managed to stay so humble. ❤❤

She is so cool and unintentionally funny.
I hate hearing him have to tell people to be gentle. I hope you feel better soon Stephen!
Give this woman a scepter
Is she person of the year? She deserves it.
She's so charming and down to earth! Love her!
Barbie was shockingly good. She really knows how to keep it light while also sending a message
My favorite director, at least in the US. Loooove her.
Greta G seems legitimately Cool, as in, not full of herself, just cool👍🏼
She looks on the verge of tears throughout.
Incredible interview Stephen!
She is our new national treasure.
Her husband is a lucky man in so many ways. She is so beautiful and accomplished
The secret sauce is Allan. We're mostly Allan's BTW. Truthful humour is the best. Contextual Humour even. 0:48 - this is us
Okay I had never heard/seen Greta Gerwig speak, and I love her even more now
She doesn't look comfortable in front of the camera. And I love it.
I still remember her first one Frances Ha. She made it big.
Thrilled about her Cannes assignment!
when I see Greta on talk shows she seems to have this kind of nervous energy, like she’s trying to think of what to say or something, and yet she’s such a talented actor and director 🤷
If you watched lady Bird and felt something you most likely watched her future films. Ladybird is so good.

Her name already sounds like it should be in lights over a movie theatre, Love her nervous energy and self effacing humour!
Greta's glee that Margot can't sing well! Love that honesty! lol
She is so talented and humble!
Didn;t,know she directed Barbie. Frances Ha was an entertaining flic, maybe I actually will see Barbie despite my general lack of interest...
