I think he was as selfish and hypocritical as most of the important people in King's Landing. He betrayed his King as much as Jamie did by joining the usurper, instead of following the remaining Targeryan family. Only when he was removed from the King's guard, when his comfortable delousing life ended, did he find the strength to go East.
@@MrBell-iq3sm That's what life is. Isn't it? Robert won the crown by right of conquest and Ser Barristan owes his title to him now. Also, you can't blame him for going to join Dany. Joffrey is a bastard. If Joffrey can't respect Ser Barristan's vows, why should Ser Barristan honour his command.

This is one of the many plot holes of the series, because Jaime's character was very different in the original draft. Him setting on the Iron Throne made more sense then.
With the way Barristan stood by while Aerys committed his atrocities because it was his 'duty', I wonder if Jofferey didn't get rid of him, would Barristan have just stood by again as Jofferey beat Sansa? He should regret that he saved Aerys in the first place! But as a white cloak, his honour would be put into question if he at least didnt try to save his king. Such tragedy.
There are some who say she faked her death and is now living in the Neck as the wife of Howland Reed (and take the name of Jyanna Reed) and is the mother of Meera and Jojen!
So Ser Barristan Selmy would have broken his vows and become a king slayer if he had seen King Robert smile at the corpses of children? Interesting, considering his opinion of Jamie Lannister on breaking his oaths.

Ser Barristan's story is really sad. He lived the life of a heroic knight, the embodiment of the ideals in songs that're so rarely reflected in truth, and despite all of his heroics and great deeds, he looks back with shame. His reward for being Barristan the Bold was regret, for not having bested Raegar. The only thing that I liked about his show death is that he went out fighting the way he wanted to. He said in both the books and show;" I am a knight. I shall die a knight."
Ashara's stillborn child was the result of her dalliance with Brandon Stark at the tourney of harrenhal. The grief of losing her child, her brother and the unrequited love of Ned Stark led to her throwing herself from starfall.
For me he is not that bright knight at all. He has put his own honor and reputation before protecting the people of westeros. He saved the mad king and later did nothing to stop him while people were burned before his eyes. He is the classic "i just followed orderes" guy we hate when its about nazi germany. And he hates Jaime for doing the thing, he wasn't brave enough to do. When you are one of the best warriors in the kingdom, there is nothing brave in going to fight sb. He took the easy way his whole life. Thats why i love GRRM - there is nearly no one in his books without guilt or bad traits.
Right then in there I am so surprised that Tywin would ever allow Jamie to join the kings guard forsaking his name sake and legacy. In Tywin’s mind it was probably all temporary and another part of his long term game of actually ruling and calling the shots regardless of who is king.
This was great! I wish you’d add a Part 3! I know the rest is covered in the books and show, but after since his story already has a conclusion, his post White Cloak days in Essos would make it complete. Once the show and books are over, the complete histories would make a great record. Rawrist rules!!
11:40 W-T-F yo... One of the rare moments when GOT world building kinda fails... BIG TIME. Tywin would NEVER make that mistake. I cannot envision Charles Dance portraying that moment. "Hey, I have a better king right here but for some unknown reason, I'ma hold off on this..." Like NEVER... Was he wasted for the entire seige???
I don't like Selmy. He judged Jamie for killing Aerys, but when he had the opportunity to follow and protect the children of the King he swore allegiance to, he rather decided to join the new King, the usurper. He chose comfort in King's Landing, but still considers himself better than Jamie.

His secret is very under theorized
Even better . Makes me crave TWOW all the more .
Ashara's stillborn child was the result of her dalliance with Brandon Stark at the tourney of harrenhal. The grief of losing her child, her brother and the unrequited love of Ned Stark led to her throwing herself from starfall.
Here Boy! Melt it down and add it to the rest!
Honestly, I would lose my shit too if I was kidnapped and held hostage for a year.
Seriously. This lady has it right.
Haley you are beautiful
And getting asshole neked doing thottianna dances wearing a clown suit while eating Mac and cheese sprinkled with pomegranate?
The fact Robert spared him makes him a better king than most say what you will about his drinking and cheating but Robert was honorable
Absolutely my favorite character...why!!! Did he have to die...
I love your history videos I can listen to you talk all day.
Wish I could have you do my audiobooks for me lol
It’s sad that Rhaegar died he would’ve been a good king
I think we can agree that this man was a solid G
I loved the video. Ser Barristan is the stuff of legends.
Hopefully GRRM will give Sir Barristan the arc he deserves. He was one of my favorites!
Just *maybe* if you didn't have siblings marry each other, you might end up with less madness in the gene pool. Maybe.
A tourney at 10?! Woah. Freaking legend.
He also won a tournament at 57! Back then, people didn't live very long, especially in his line of work.
How cool does a dragon pepper sound?
Sounds spicy af
Very nice job of narrating Ser Barristan's life.
Broke: Barristan the Bold
Woke: Barristan the BOI
Great job rawrist! Please do a bunch of videos like this!
Great video on a cool character. I hated what they did to him in the show
Good thing Barristan didn't saw what Danny did
The one who knighted him was Aegon V, is that Egg?
It isn’t that hard to unhorse Ser Dunca the Tall
That's what I thought. See Duncan was better with a 🗡️
One of my favorite Characters in this Series
Very detailed, insightful. Good work
Barriston for King
I fucking love this man
Great video! Thank you so much!
But why was he kicked out of King's Landing so he went to find Danny in Essos?
It's cool that Tywin knighted Aerys.
Is this my new favorite channel?
Barristan the GOAT.
It can't be complete if Baristan is still alive in the books. But still I love this video.
Why would anyone give this video a thumbs down??? Good summary of the Bold's life!!
Ser Barristan fathered Ser Pounce. :)
It's "Sir Pouts" which now your argument doesn't make sense
Sounds like we need a series called Barristan
I don't like Selmy.
He judged Jamie for killing Aerys, but when he had the opportunity to follow and protect the children of the King he swore allegiance to, he rather decided to join the new King, the usurper. He chose comfort in King's Landing, but still considers himself better than Jamie.
"But I know who knows"
*Me* : Martin please ;_;
