It would be fairly accurate to call these constructions "curiosities" because they are largely premised on the principle of novelty for novelty's sake. Whether they have cultural or artistic merit is up for debate: do these projects advance the evolution of great art or architecture? In today's world people with varying degrees of creative talent are designing with intentions to re-shape objects, buildings, environments and processes to draw attention to them. But being different is no guarantee of true innovation. Of the examples here, the UK Pavilion (Shanghai) has a special charm and would be beautiful undulating in the wind. The Learning Hub (Singapore) is moderately interesting sculpturally on the exterior, but the connected interior spaces are as prosaic as they could possibly be. (3:37) Standard materials in boring earth tones.

Architecture is at a stall because there are no patrons, there is no art, only ecology and re-structure. Those are today's architecture values. The era of designing is over. Architects today belong to the 'fix it' era.
That makes me sad. But I'm not one to say that's better or worse.

It looks cool, but honestly what a waste of $150M to just build a structure entirely of stairs.

If they'd put the same guy in charge who designed the Oculus, they wouldve wasted a lot more money.
